Name: Nick Cross

School: Maryland

Year: Jr

Position: safety

Measurables: 6’0 1/8th 212

Stats:

General Info:

Cross attended DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland. He was a consensus four-star recruit and the top-ranked player in Maryland. He also played in the Army All-American Game. The former Terp finished his senior season with 94 tackles and four interceptions. As a freshman at Maryland, he played in all 12 games with five starts. He collected 45 tackles, 1 TFL, two INTs, and five PBUs. He allowed 13 completions on 22 targets and three TDs. For the 2020 season, he played in four of his team's five games, starting three. He finished the season with 23 tackles, one INT, one sack, 3 PBUs, and one FF. In coverage, he was only targeted twice and allowed no completions. For his junior season, he started all 13 games and finished with 66 tackles, three INTs, two FFs, 3.5 TFLs, three sacks, and four PBUs. He was targeted 28 times and allowed 21 receptions and four TDs.

Positional Skills:

Strengths

Fast and explosive athlete; his 4.34 speed, 37” vertical, and 10’10” broad jump shows up on film. Elite range to go sideline to sideline in a flash. Cross has a well-built muscular frame. He backpedals and flips his hips with ease. When he can line up his target he can really lay the wood and even dislodge the ball sometimes. He is a willing tackler and a physical player who has no problem getting dirty in the run game. He can cover tight ends in man coverage due to his size and explosiveness. The former Terp is solid in his run fits. He does a really good job of reaching in at the right time to knock the ball away. The safety from Maryland has great hands for the interception and does a good job of timing his jump when in zone.

Weaknesses

Cross lacks some starting experience, he only has one full season as a starter in ’21 and 8 games over ’19 and ’20. He has 23 missed tackles in his career with 21 career starts in 29 games played in his career. His missed tackles are usually because he didn’t break down and settle in a tackling position and he ends up diving and missing the tackle. Also Cross will go for the hit and miss when just wrapping up and tackling a guy is the better option. He has miss-timed his jump on some balls when in trail. Cross could also improve on his angles to the ball. He could still be better in his run fits and needs to bend his knees more to get more leverage. His arm length is just average which might cause some problems with covering taller tight ends. Cross will still show some missteps on film, mostly due to his inexperience.  He played some in the box in ’21 but not much before that, you would have liked to see him get more experience there. Cross can also get tricked by motion and misdirection occasionally.

Fit with the Packers:

Cross would be a great fit for the Packers. He is the first player since Nick Collins to come out that has a similar size, athleticism, and skills. He can play free, strong, the slot, or even as a nickel linebacker. He could tag team with Savage and they could alternate playing free and nickel depending on the matchup. He would also bring a hitters’ mentality that hasn’t existed in the Packer's secondary in a long time. If they can extend Amos that would give the Packers one of the best secondaries in the league.

This was interesting. I did a quick search on him at the mockdraft site, and it seems to me that he's generally regarded as a Day 3 guy who might sneak into the bottom of the third round.

But, one of the sources I've consulted for years is www.thehuddlereport.com and this guy, Cross, got a glowing report there. So now I need to find out a lot more. We can always use guys who can cover and tackle and this guy sounds like a pretty good athlete for the position.

I definitely think it's possible we take a safety, maybe even in the first round (probably not). We really aren't all that well situated at safety behind Amos and Savage.

This is a nice guide from PFF. If you click on the player and then click stats on the player page it gives you a nice snap breakdown of where a player lined up. That's where I got the numbers for Cross that I listed in the comment below. Pro Football Networks mock draft simulator also has a really deep board that you can split up by position and they're usually closer than other big boards. Tony Pauline has been around a long time and talks to a lot of scouts. Plus he's a big Led Zeppelin fan, bonus points in my book.

Sounds like an athlete but not a football player at least for now

I really like this kid. Bigger safety at 6’-1" 210 lbs but can really fly. He played 2 snaps at Edge, 53 in the slot, 24 at outside corner, 281 in the box and 420 deep. He lit it up at the combine at went from a 5th-6th rounder to 3rd-4th. He could come in and play deep while he learns the defense, freeing up Amos and Savage for more versatile roles.

Speaking of versatile guys Jalen Pitre is a freak. He played 153 snaps at Edge, 601 snaps in the slot, 19 at outside corner, 122 in the box and 14 deep last year for Baylor. He'd be awesome in Barry's Star role but he'll be gone by pick 59 and the Packers have bigger fish to fry. I'll be happy with a S taken later like Cross or Bubba Bolden real late. I wouldn't trust Bolden to do much but play deep but he can do that well, played a lot of cover 1 and cover 3 at Miami.

I hope they get a shot at Dax Hill. Would take bottom 1st or top 2nd rd pick though. I think he could be best safety in the draft class. Agree on Huddle Report. It's the go to draft site, imo. Doesn't profile every prospect, but has links to almost every other site.

Now that Amos is restructured S is shored up. But Black was allowed to walk into free agency, so the depth at S will be addressed in the draft. Black was not a great S, but was the Packers best ST player.

There are some good prospects that will be pushed down the rounds due to the great depth at OL, Edge, WR, and CB. Cross could be one.

Draft Buzz is a draft prospect site I like. They mirror Brian's analysis of Cross and the 11th best S....they list him as a DB instead of a SS or FS as he could play in many spots. Also say he could be valuable ST player in the return game due to his speed and willingness to bring the lumber.
