Mike McCarthy on Mark Sanchez: You Can See His Athletic Ability

McCarthy commented on Wednesday that the new Eagles quarterback looked good in space.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy met with the media on Wednesday in advance of the upcoming game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The following are select comments from McCarthy's press conference:

  • On the health of offensive guards: T.J. Lang and Josh Sitton were in the rehab part of it today. We'll see tomorrow if they'll be able to do anything. … They're probably similar to where they were last week.
  • On the impact of grading players in a blowout victory: It doesn't affect anything as far as its correct. We have a grading system the way its presented to the players.
  • On the emphasis of winning the game as a tie-breaker with the Eagles: No, Jason (Whalers) puts together the media topics for the week because I usually cut them in half because they're not that important. … Today's players are so much more informated than ever because of all the information out there. … It's not a point of emphasis for us.
  • On the Eagles special teams: I can't really comment on their philosophy. As I view them, I think they're playing well in all three areas. … Defensive, schematically, very aggressive. … A lot of carry-over that we're seeing this compared to the schemes that we use. On special teams, dynamic returner. … Returns will be at a premium this week.
  • On the Eagles defense: I think it's a very aggressive defense, plays with excellent pursuit. … It's a very well-rounded defense. I don't think there's any area that's a weak spot. … Each week, it's a challenge.
  • On the Eagles' no-huddle offense: We should be equipped for it. We still do a no-huddle drill each Wednesday, we did today.
  • On the Packers offense: The thing that we've done an extremely good job of the past five or six week is the point production. … We're extremely productive with our opportunities. Our red-zone drives are way up. … When you get into substitutions and things like that, it can affect your statistics.
  • On Mark Sanchez: I think you really have to pay attention to what they're doing with the whole scheme and the whole system. … He looked good in space. I thought he threw the ball, you can see his athletic ability.
  • On whether the Packers will look at film from Sanchez's time with the Jets: No, we won't look at the Jets, no. We don't think that will help us Sunday.
  • On quarterback development: I think it definitely, it affects the beginning of your career. No doubt about it. … I think you get a more prepared quarterback coming into the game today. … Quarterbacks are being exposed more. … How they fit, the defense they're playing to is always a big thing. … That's kind of what I've learned from going through it.
  • On the challege of facing the Eagles' up-tempo offense: The tempo is something we're definitely accustomed to. … They're stressing your communication. … You look at the big play they had in the first half last year, they went unbalanced. … Those are the things you have to be really on top of.
  • On Eagles coach Chip Kelly: Just watching Oregon really during the scouting period was my exposure to what Chip was doing at Oregon … I think he's doing a great job with them.
  • On Connor Barwin: Good football player. Leverage, strength. He's off to a good start.
  • On injuries to Brandon Bostick (hip) and Jayrone Elliott (hamstring): Concern level, it's going to be, I don't want to say a challenge, but we'll see how the week goes.

And that's what scares me... Packers seem to piss down their own legs in "big games".

Kind of like what you do when you make your predictions, no? (Not a team in the league Packers can hold under 20). Or when you give your analysis (Cutler and Dalton better than Rodgers. Kaepernick revolutionized the QB position. CMIII's production drops due to discontinuing his HGH use). Or your unique inside information (Bulaga on IR).

Urinating on extremities, thy name is Andrew.

Hmm, I'm trying to envision a scenario in which the eagles beat us Sunday. Aside from catastrophic injury, it ain't happening . I do hope Sitton and Lang can heal up over the next several weeks, they played fantastic Sunday, but they couldn't have felt good doing it.

Packers roll.

"Here, I'll help"

Yeah, man... I wish I would have considered all those obvious things. Oh, wait... I did. And I quickly disregarded them because they're not going to happen with such success that the game may be in jeopardy.

Packers roll

If you really want to help... take the plastic bag challenge.

Nelson eats up physical corners.
Mccoy sucks this year.
Sproles is kinda overrated
It's not that the pass rush is good, just that the O-lines they faced kind of sucked.
Eagles run defense is middle of the pack, so we might be able to run the ball.
Read option might have been worked out with the move.

When you continue to piss into the wind, your going to continue to get wet...

I guess if you keep posting all of this stuff, and the Packers continue to prove you wrong, I would think you would have learned your lesson by now. But I guess a Lion can't change his stripes...

I'm not going to say the Packers will or won't win. If I knew that I would be in Vegas right now. I just feel really good about how the Packers are playing and they are starting to click both offensively and defensively. This game is at Lambeau. I like our chances.

"By the way - the location of this game means nothing."

Nonsense. It's not about "intimidation," it's about a friendly environment.

- Packers are averaging 41.5 points per game at home, 1st in the NFL.
- Home crowd helps the Packers no-huddle.
- Rodgers is 41-10 at home (26-26 on the road - that's surprising, actually).
- Since 2010, Rodgers has a total of 4 home losses.
- Rodgers hasn't thrown an interception at home since Week 13 of the 2012 season (10 games, 286 pass att, 26 TDs).

Rodgers/Packers are better at home. Duh.

I won't because I don't have the time/interest (I encourage you to do so, however). Furthermore, it's not the point I was arguing.

You said location doesn't matter - that's patently absurd. Rodgers and the Packers play better (much better) at home. (psst...all teams play better at home). 28-4 at home since 2010. Regardless of the opponent, that's an impressive stat.

If this game were in Philly...I know I'd feel entirely different about it. Same for the Pats game.

As to your point about a "statement game." That I totally agree with. Technically, this game isn't a "must win", but it's a game they need to win. If that makes any senses.

He just likes to turn anything he can against the Packers. If they win, there is a reason why the other team lost. If the Packers lose, its cuz they are a horrible team who can't beat anyone good.

I don't know if you looked into it or not, but did you compare the Packers home record to other teams since 2010? That would be an interesting thing to see... What would be more interesting is to take out the 7 games Rodgers missed last year and see what that record is.

I agree with both of you guys saying this is a statement game. This is a game that they need to win. Lions aren't losing games they would have in the past and are going to be a true competitor down the stretch.

Well, your predictions have been spot on. Considering you predicted the Packers to lose badly to the Bears.
How did that work out?

Also Cow, answer me this. In the last 5 years, who is the ONLY NFL team to make the playoffs every year, and win the Super Bowl?

Yeah, you got that right. The Packers.

I feel good about the team because each week they have improved, minus the Saints game which now could be considered a wake up game. Also lets factor in the Defense was playing without Burnett, Shields and Jones. Whenever a team is playing without 3 starters there should be some expected drop off in play. Also the game really changed when Rodgers hurt his hamstring.

I felt good about where the Packers were before the Bears game.

The offense, while they lost the Saints game, what they gained in that game might be just as valuable. They have now included Lacy into the Passing game. They now have threats over the entire field. Not just down field.

The defense, took a major step forward. They are healthy, and Capers took the bye week to figure out how to get the most out of the defense. Which was to put Clay in a different role. He is not playing the traditional OLB or ILB. Its a Hybrid position which utilizes Clay's full talents. Clay is now in a position to have an impact similar to what Troy Polamalu has had with the Steelers defense. He is a player that can go where ever whenever.

'This game is nothing like that game. This game is more in line with the games against the Seahawks, Lions, and Saints... you know... the games against GOOD teams.'

The big difference between this game and those games, are the location of the games. Seattle and Saints are the toughest 2 places to play in the league. The biggest thing to remember too, for whatever reason, the Packers always start out slowly at the beginning of the year. They are a team that builds momentum as the season wears on. I don't worry about what happens in week 1. November-December-January is when you want your team playing the best.

I agree that the Packers can lose this game. There are no unbeaten teams in the league. Every week any team can win or lose.

Lambeau isn't 'intimidating' as it used to be, but doesn't mean its not a tough place for opponents to come in to play. Location of the game means a lot.

Sproles is a scary player. No Doubt. But hasn't he been hurt most of the year? McCoy isn't playing like he has in the past either.

I feel really good about where the Packers are at right now. They are starting to find themselves offensively and defensively.

I live in Philly, so I get to see a lot Eagles games. Sproles has been really good for them this year, probably even better than McCoy. But the weird thing is that they aren't winning with offense generally. They have a whole bunch of defensive and ST TDs. If we can not turn the ball over and not stupidly punt to Sproles in the middle of the field, we'll have a much better shot at a victory.

so COW is saying visiting teams already check this game off as a win when the schedule comes out, except his Vikings they hope for a tie at the most.So when the Packers win COW will say well if the Eagles hade Foles it would have been a different game.I can read COW'S small mind.

Doesn't matter arguing with him. No point. No matter what happens there is an excuse why the Packers won. But if they lose, watch out...

As he predicted the Bears would win. Packers blow them out and the Bears 'rolled' over for them.

So he says the Eagles will win. (which they might). But if the Packers win, then what will be the excuse? I am guessing your right with the Sanchez/Foles factor. If the Packers lose. Well they can't beat a good team...

Sanchez did look better than I expected - but that was also against a pretty crappy Panthers team. So, hard to read much into it.

As Idiot said, Philly has been winning on turnovers and special teams. I like our chances in the first department. As for special teams, I'd just kick everything out of bounds (maybe not kickoffs...well, maybe kickoffs too).

Yep. Foles wasn't having near the success he had last year. He was leading all QB in turnovers this year I believe. I actually think Sanchez is a better fit for Kelly's system, better foot work, a bit more mobile... could be wrong

To COW:
- Your pessimism is really quite impressive.
- I totally agree with you, that if the Packers lose to a Mark Sanchez team who beat the Texans and the Panthers (2 losing teams)........at home......everyone here needs to really start worrying.
- With that being said........I think we are on a roll. And we will come out on top.
- Furthermore.....if we beat the Patriots.......will you at least show you have the capability to have optimism? And since home field doesn't matter........there will be no excuses for that one.

all right, you seem adamant at your point.
here's my three cents:

1. Nothing is predetermined. That's why people say "any given Sunday/Monday/Thursday." That's the beauty of any sport, but IMO this one.

2. When someone says "we", and they are referring to their team, that usually means that they love the team, almost as if they are a part of it. Obviously, you are incapable of love, so do not question others'.

3. Why do you constantly become pessimistic? There has to be an actual reason. Were you thrown into the world as a child, forced to fend of drug dealers who attacked you? Do you need another hour of sleep? I mean, there has to be an actual ground for your hate.

Some people eat negative attention like candy. Some people get a lot of attention by talking trash and getting people all riled up. I'd bet some people come on these blogs don't even like or care about football. Football has become more entertainment than a game that means something today IMO. Winning is the only thing in sports. If "your team" doesn't win its not the end of the world, but to a lot of fans it almost is. I've been to SB 45, seen my team win it all and it was great. I personally wouldn't mortgage the farm to go. I won 2 free tickets all expenses paid. Sat with people who didn't give a shit who won or lost. A lot of high rollers. When they don't make it affordable for the average fan, it just doesn't seem right. Its all about the $$$$$$$.

Many of us can say "we" since we are shareholders. So while we are not on the team, we have a deeper and much longer connection to our Green Bay Packers than any player, who is here and playing just temporarily. Even if they play 15 years, it's still shorter than the time we shareholders own our shares. There, I explained why I use the "we".

and I agree, there definitely is a "hate" factor. I attribute that to the fact that the team or teams he is usually rooting for suck. I mean why would anybody want to post on the vikings board during another mediocre or bad season. The 49ers were the laughing stock of the NFL not too long ago. Now they've had a couple of good seasons, but this one is mediocre at best. So nothing to root for there either.

Of course, the funniest thing is the definition of "good" teams. Maybe it is true that we cannot win against good teams and put a lot of points onto bad teams. But what team is good? One with a winning record? By that definition, the Saints aren't. And they really aren't, but someone has to win the NFC South. Funny though, I've heard before the Vikings game that the Vikings would run all over the D. Before the Panthers game that Cam Newton would shred the D with running and passing. And before the Bears game that the Bears receivers would demolish the D. None of that happened, but apparently before those games those teams were considered "good". Otherwise the prediction should've been that we would run up the score against those bad teams. So in reality, apparently the definition is that any team beating the Packers is "good", any team losing to the Packers is "bad". So Saints with 4-5 are good. Panthers with 3-6-1, Bears with 3-6, Vikings with 4-5, and Dolphins with 6-4 are all bad. Had we lost to the Jets, then the 3-7 Jets would be good. got it.

We must have played a lot of bad teams lately. Before this season, the records during regular season combined for the last 5 seasons was 55-24-1. Man that NFL is a collection of horrible teams then.

Distinct possibility, "we" will likely be favorites in each... for good, sound reason... Vegas lines aren't set by dummies. Last I checked, "we" are 6 pt faves against a good philly team... started at 4.5

Worst case, 5-2 to finish out. That's 11-5... absolute worst case.

Man the experts are dead on. Packers favored by 6. The only teams with a higher spread are the Rams at Denver and Raiders at Chargers. Even the experts are giving the Packers their due. Also the Pack is ranked 5th in power rankings. The Eagles are 4th, but playing in Lambeau makes them an underdog. Nice to be home.
