Mike McCarthy explains Michael Clark's retirement, Cole Madison's absence

-- Mike McCarthy provided an update on the two players placed on the Green Bay Packers' reserve/did not report list this week.

Wide receiver Michael Clark, a 6-6 former basketball player with one year of collegiate football experience under his belt and offensive lineman Cole Madison, one of the team's three fifth-round picks in April's draft, were both placed on the aforementioned list on Wednesday, the same day the team reported to training camp.

Madison is tending to a personal matter, whereas Clark simply retired flat-out from the game of football.

"That kind of took us by surprise Tuesday and Wednesday, and really I think in respect to Cole I'm going to just leave it at that," McCarthy said of Madison before Thursday's first training camp practice. "This is a personal situation and I do not have any timeline for you."

Madison was drafted as a tackle out of Washington State but has since transitioned to guard for offensive line coach James Campen. He was expected to compete for one of the backup roles -- and still can once he returns.

Clark, meanwhile, reportedly contacted the Packers weeks ago and informed the team he did not want to resume his playing career.

"It did surprise me," McCarthy said. "I think Mike was a young, talented football player. Still had a lot of things in front of him."

Clark ditched a full-ride scholarship for a college basketball team in Pennsylvania to play football for the Marshall Thundering Herd before signing with the Packers as a spectacle of an undrafted free agent last year.

Entering his second season with a couple of highlight catches under his belt -- in both the preseason and regular season -- Clark was aiming to make a run at one of the backup receiving roles.

"But just like everything in life and in business, there's a personal side to this. He contacted the organization. It's been a couple weeks."

The Packers signed receivers Adonis Jennings and Kyle Lewis as a result, still keeping the number of receivers housed on their roster at 11.

I'm guessing Clark has an opportunity that he considers a better opportunity than playing football. Playing football isn't all roses. It may seem like a dream job until you're actually playing and getting your head beat in on a regular basis. Then, it's not such a "dream job".

I wish MM would have addressed something a little more newsworthy Like how 2 of the highest paid and injury prone players were injured during the offseason (Cobb, Perry).

MM is not very sharp. If you want some football insights follow Andrew Lloyd Peth and Since 61 debates. There is more meat there than you will ever learn from MM.

MM looks at a card on his night desk each morning telling him his name and profession.

Then he gets up to face the day.

Look, he's just not very good at what he does. --- He fell into AR. Look at his record without AR. --- He should be coaching at Division 2 college. -- He might be good at that level.

Weirdly, I look at a card on my morning desk every night that tells me I’m a highly successful NFL fan.

Why would you look at a card weirdly? Your face might freeze like that.

In the hopes that it DOES!
One man’s “weird” is another man’s GQ!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go back to leaving the door open and air conditioning the neighborhood.

You can't say "Without AR" and not add a "with X instead". I don't think there is a coach in the league that wouldn't perform significantly worse if you trade their franchise QB with Seneca Wallace.
He went to an NFCCG with Favre, better then Mike Sherman did. He got the offense rolling with Matt Flynn. He didn't have a lot of success with various backup quarterbacks in the middle of a season who generally played poorly.
