Jordan Love Doesn't Need To Be Great For the Packers To Move On From Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay has a difficult quarterback decision to make

The Green Bay Packers have an extremely difficult and franchise-altering decision to make in the next few weeks regarding Aaron Rodgers. After all, it’s not easy to move on from a sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Fame quarterback, who has been the starter and the face of the franchise for 15 years, a period that included one Super Bowl championship, four MVP awards, and a sustained success that is almost impossible to achieve in the salary cap era.

However, there are also various reasons to move on as well. Rodgers’ performance last year regressed, after two high-level MVP seasons. Moreover, age is also a factor — Rodgers will be 40 years old in December, so it’s impossible to know for how long he will want to play, and especially how long he will play at a high level. The contract he signed last offseason is a major consideration too. If the Packers trade him this year, there will be a $ 40.3 million hit in dead money, $ 9 million more than his projected cap hit for the Packers if he plays. But things get much worse in the future if Green Bay decides to give their veteran quarterback one or two more seasons. The dead money in 2024 would be $68.21 million, and $76.8 million in 2025. Yes, it would be possible to spread the hit in two years, but it's still a high number that would compromise the Packers retool or rebuild after Rodgers' potential retirement.

And there is also Jordan Love. But the main point is that Love’s performance doesn’t necessarily need to be good to justify trading Rodgers.

Firstly, Love has shown signs of development and progressed in every efficiency stat from 2021 to 2022. He improved his completion percentage from 58.1 to 66.7, his touchdown percentage went from 3.2 to 4.8, while his interception percentage went down from 4.8 to 0. Love was better in yards per attempt (6.6 to 9.3), yards per completion (11.4 to 13.9), passer rating (68.7 to 112.2), QBR (31.4 to 82.2), and adjusted net yards per pass attempt (4.51 to 10.24). But the sample size is minuscule, and nobody knows how successful he will be as a full-time starter — even the Packers, who have seen him in practice for three years.

Nevertheless, the Packers invested a first-round pick in Jordan Love in 2020, and now he’s approaching a decisive part of his career. This is the last year of his rookie deal, and the Packers must decide by May if they want to exercise a fully-guaranteed, $20 million fifth-year option. Ideally, by this point, the front office should have already discovered if he is their guy or not. But they haven’t, because their circumstances are unusual.

In 2023, without Rodgers, Love would have the opportunity to show what he is capable of. After a full season with number 10 as the starter, general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur would have a much better idea of Love’s floor and ceiling, and they could have the chance to operate accordingly. In any scenario, the salary cap flexibility and the extra draft capital achieved with the Aaron Rodgers trade would help immensely.

If Love is good, great. The Packers would have the chance to give him a long-term extension and plan their future knowing he is their guy, and the extra picks would compensate for the fact that the Packers lost the cheap years on his rookie-scale deal to build a strong roster around the quarterback. If Love is bad or not good enough, the Packers would have the ammunition to find another passer. Love might still be a bridge quarterback in 2024, under his guaranteed fifth-year option, and Green Bay would gain a year to develop their youngest signal-caller.

Obviously, there are no assurances. It’s hard to get an elite quarterback in the NFL, and many franchises go decades without finding one. But the reality is that the Aaron Rodgers’ era will end soon, the Packers wanting it or not. If that’s the case, it makes much more sense to take advantage of his value when it still exists to maximize their capital and their chances to build the best possible roster moving forward.

You are correct Stock, Love (or another QB) will be replacing a past MVP. But a commited/invested Love plus offensive scheme being run, gives him a chance to be good, maybe really good over time. I will take that and less drama everytime.

I am just a fan so I don't worry about repurcussions as much as the FO who get compensated for making those decisions. I am so ready for another QB to try and run the offense to see if Coach LaF is the solution or a detriment moving forward.

Lombardi would have traded Rodgers for any one of a dozen selfish/childish incidents that have occurred over AR's time in GB.

Lombardi didn't suffer fools well.

I went to my first Packers game at "old City Stadium in 1956.
Even prior to seeing him play in person Billy Howton was my favorite player.
My only knowledge of him prior to that Bears game came via trading cards since we didn't have TV in those days.
My recollection is that the Bears smoked us, BAD, but Billy Howton had, IMHO, a Hall of fame game on that day.
I never got to see him play live again.

Dude, you are ancient!

Howton was the "superstar" of the Packers when Lombardi was hired.

Lombardi called him into the office, Howton flew into town, met with Coach Lombardi, called him Vince and was summarily traded immediately.

...or something like that... LOL.

Lombardi wasn't going to have any prima dona player, no matter how good he was, call the shots for HIS team.

That's leadership. I don't give a rats ass about the "new breed" of players or anything else, it takes a strong willful person to lead thoroughbred athletes and demand the best from them. Milquetoast sops need not apply. Remind you of anyone you know?

I may not know much, but I know what leadership is. ... in my best Forrest Gump voice...

We are replacing a former MVP who didn’t get to a Super Bowl in either season, will be 40 next season and who will, If retained, essentially be paid for by ensuring that we have no cap to give him a supporting cast. We have had a season to see what we are really replacing. It’s time and it’s essential for the good of both him and the franchise, whether he sees that or not.

"You're replacing a MVP.
You better be good."

This kind of mindset is self-defeating.

The next Packers QBs (plural) will be unfairly judged against the QBs that preceded them. The QB needs to be who he is: play to his strengths, play within the system, do his best to make the others around him better and the team better than the sum of its parts.

From all corners there is every indication Jordan Love is improving and will be a good starting NFL QB. Just where on the QB food chain he ends up no one really knows yet, but he is very young still and I do not see why he will not continue to improve over say the next 5-years learning defenses, and how to counter specific defensive schemes. Moving on from AR is necessary for so many reasons and the more draft capital the Packers can get to start the rebuild the better. A year too late but nonetheless make the move! I'm excited about the future and possibilities if the Packers make the move from AR NOW!

AR moving on seems likely so we all had better agree Jordan Love is the real deal. However, as I have mentioned is should they have any doubts regarding Love with the additional draft capital (for trading AR) they easily could draft a top QB in round 1, or round 2. Not what I would like to see but obtaining a good starting QB is difficult in the NFL and the Packers would certainly have the draft capital to select one of the best in 2023.

I hope Love is good. It will take time to find out. However, if he’s not then the hope shifts to the next guy, the cap flexibility returns and we build around the QB, increasing our chances of adequacy. Once one accepts that Rodgers as he is now with this cap and roster isn’t winning a Super Bowl, the right direction is obvious, no less so because it is likely to be bumpy.

How can I be so sure?

Well, Bob McGinn has been covering the Packers for about 30+ years, and nobody has better access to the decision makers than McGinn. He's won a lot of awards, is considered the Dean of Packers writers, and has had a very successful career.

So, he might have thrown all that away by lying about the Front Office to get some clicks for a podcast. Or he might be telling the truth, and that the front office is using him to get the message out. You can decide for yourself which is more likely.

If Mcginn was lying about this, wouldn't you see the GM and Murphy and LaFleur rushing to the microphone to say "Oh no, that's not true. We'd love to have Aaron back if he wants to be here". But I'm not seeing that, are you?

More Concrete? The Dean of Packer scribes, who has had a long career and won many awards, says he got this from "people with first hand knowledge".

How does it get more concrete than that? And if it's all a lie, where are Gutekunst and Murphy and LaFleur setting the record straight?

You've heard the GM talk up Love. You've heard Rodgers say he might seek a trade if the Packers want to go in a different direction, which they do, and which they just told him.

It's over.

Formerly fat man.

I was pretty trim in my 20s. I was in the 82nd Airborne and I always liked working out and exercising.

Then I met the wife, and she could cook, and then the kids came, and the next thing I knew I had a Dad bod, about 30 pounds overweight. The nice thing is that in San Antonio, if you're 30 pound overweight you're probably thinner than the person you're standing next to.

Then age started to kick in, and I gained another 20. But a few years ago, I decided I'd had enough of this and I dropped 50 pounds, so I'm back to what I weighed in my early 20s now.

Loved True Grit. John Wayne is one of the men who I admired and wanted to be more like when I was younger. I do a pretty good impression, but increasingly, people are like "Who's John Wayne"? (He died in 1979, so that's like ancient history to millenials and Gen X.)

It's highly unreasonable to expect the promising Jordan Love to spend another year on the bench.
It's highly unreasonable to expect to obtain another young quarterback who is as promising as Love, and is as ready to run the Packers offense.
***
It's highly unreasonable to expect Aaron Rodgers to lead the Packers anywhere good in 2023 after the past three season have ended with heartbreaking losses at Lambeau Field.
It's highly unreasonable to expect Rodgers to be around more than a year or two with the Packers, anyway.
It's highly unreasonable to sell out the good name of the Packers for an arrogant and domineering and self-absorbed Rodgers, and for fans to trade their dignity for a guy who holds out on us for three straight offseasons.
***
So it is that it seems highly reasonable to focus our attention and gather our support for Love, who has been quietly classy and cooperative and patient for so very long, and shows promising signs of talent and poise as our quarterback of the future.

That being said, there are still fans of Rodgers on this site. I don't think it's up to you to question their personal dignity just because they don't share your views on a particular football player. I just don't understand why you have to always go there.

Maybe you're right about me going too far, 13TC.
It seems there are a lot of good people with dignity who still want Rodgers back.
***
I would still say that Rodgers is treating us fans like saps, in my opinion, by holding us hostage for three-straight offseasons of waiting on his whims.
He seems little concerned about the fans who are necessary for him to get an extravagant salary -- which he takes at the expense of his teammates.
He appears to interfere in coaching and personnel decisions -- for example, by not playing in the preseason because he says practice is enough, but then wanting to play in a meaningless game at the end of the regular season of 2021 against the Lions when homefield was already wrapped up.
***
Perhaps the fans don't realize the tricks of manipulation played by Rodgers.
If a fan sees that Rodgers is being arrogant and domineering and self-absorbed, and still wants him back because he supposedly gives us the best chance to win, then that does seem to be trading away dignity.
***
Perhaps the way to put it is that it's highly unreasonable for fans to trade their dignity for a guy who holds out on us for three straight offseasons -- if they understand, and agree with, the assessment that Rodgers is playing us for saps.
I'd be glad to learn how Rodgers is being fair with the fans, being caring for the fans, being all that concerned about anyone other than himself.
I'm glad for other comments in general to give me perspective on Rodgers that is more positive. He has been one of my favorite Packers of all time, and it's sad to see him apparently decline in his treatment of those around him, including us fans.

If Love is our QB, (nothing is certain in the NFL and Green Bay) he's had unique chances that aren't afforded first round draft choices anymore.

He received his QB 101 in college. He received 3 years of NFL graduate study under one of the best QBs ever, to watch and learn from.

He's shown great personality, work ethic, reserve and advancement. His ceiling is high and not close to being reached.

He gets to spend at least 6 months a year in Green Bay Wisconsin.

We and he couldn't ask for more. How many NFL franchises would wish they were in this predicament?

Wait until Gutey trades AR12 to the Raiders for #7 and #38 overall...

7: Quentin Johnston - WR TCU
15: Paris Johnson Jr. - OT - Ohio State
38: Bijan Robinson - RB - Texas
45 Darnell Washington - WR - Georgia

Will you still hate him and want him replaced immediately? Especially if he drafts your man-crush in Bijan?

Be honest...

Bravo!

It's about time. Holy crap. I am hopeful Jordan Love is able to realize his true gifts and years of development in this 2023 season. There's been a lot of growth through that time, and it ought to be fun to see what he can do leading the Packers O.

It's also going to be fun learning Matt LaFleur's scheme, calls, tendencies with a different eye, and a different QB1 under C. Finally. We certainly should be getting a clearer picture of what both he & LaFleur does or doesn't bring to the table this upcoming season.

While non us really like to throw anyone under da bus, why is it always the QB's going out on a bad note with this club. GB gave diva boy more then they should and he is still sticking his finger at them. Maybe its his way of finging excuses as to why he isnt productive anymore, the blame game is starting and he isnt taking any of the lack of success for this team. What a POS. Thus, Love will be a breath of fresh air for all of us.

"...why is it always the QB's going out on a bad note with this club." & "GB gave diva boy more then they should and he is still sticking his finger at them."

You asked the question and gave the answer. It is the same way it happens with spoiled children. They will always ask for more.

ACR needs to have attention all time and he needs to everyone sees and understands he is the best. Well, at the moment he can not show that with quantity of SB wins, MVP titles, nor with his stats. He is spoiled child who do not knows how it looks like to be "unpleased" for a longer period. He is affraid of failings and he hide his shortcomings by his Ego. That is the function of oversized egos.

While Ego is sign, choking in the most important momets is consequence of his fear of mediocrity.

He is not bad, he is scared that he is. All those shortcomings comes from that fear. As now it is to late to change (despite many will claim that never is to late), it is better to let him go. He has enough wealth and enough intelligence so I'm sure he will not ruin his life.

We all should be thankful for great moments he brought us with his playing in the first half of his career with Packers.

If you moved up or back in to the 1st rd to draft a QB that others passed on, then you must have convinced yourself that there is a greatness in that player.

To now say that a player doesn't need to be this or that, or have greatness in him, now reeks of moving on for the simple fact of moving on, and can be done with any QB.

If the FO believes in Love, to any decent extent of ability, they don't need to wait for Rodgers' decision. Make the best decision for the team, period.

What is the FO afraid of most?

Losing Rodgers, or Love not being what they envisioned when drafted, or that either puts the team in a bad place?

If the latter, then the FO needs a rebuild more than the team.

One reason Love doesn't have to be good is because he cannot truly show what he is, until he gets a bunch of games as starter. It's only then we will get a good idea what the Packers have in him.

Either the front office believes in him, or not. Since they drafted him (even traded up for him) I'm assuming they do.

Besides the terrible Rodgers contract that needs to come of the books, it is better to move on a season too early, on an aging player, than too late. Last year would have been the optimum time, but a deal can still be done this offseason.

As for the difficult decision, I see it as a fairly straightforward one.

I think they really like Danny "Dimes" Etling... I could be wrong, but he did play pretty well. Probably nothing more than a clipboard holder, but hopefully, he'd never get to play anyway...

If I were Gutey, I'd draft a guy like Max Duggan out of TCU in the 7th round. Put him on the practice squad and hope he's the next Brock Purdy if Love were to get hurt...

I liked what I saw of Etling, too. Nonetheless, I expect them to draft a QB, possibly high, if Rodgers leaves.

By the way BDU, my recent mock simulations have me trading down to get more 2s and 3s, but sometimes I keep a late first rounder and pick O’Cyrus Torrence. The concept of getting him and Dawand Jones with the first two picks also makes me happy. Talk about a new offense!

Mary Ann is comfortable with who she is and is more of a team player. She doesn't need mirrors hanging up to stare into. The mirror she owns is being used for redirecting the sunlight to a passing plane so all can get rescued off that island called Cap Hell of Me First

Those who cannot obtain, more often claim to be happy, but it's more about accepting they can't be more, and making the best, and be better at what they do/are. Nothing wrong with that, more people should understand and aspire to do that very thing. It's OK to wear your own shoes and walk tall.

So crying about the “Rodgers Drama” is so laughable. When Rodgers is gone you will find some other drama to cry about(LF,MM,Barry, your mommy never really loved you, etc) it’s like overhearing the cheerleaders lunch table in junior high. It would actually be funny if it wasn’t so sad….

The options are:
1. Move on from Rodgers, and take an immediate cap hit of over $40 million. See what Love can do.
2. Keep Rodgers, and have the salary cap hole get deeper and deeper. Lose Love, and make the team even more beholden to Rodgers.
If the team chooses option 1, they will cut their losses, and can do what Philly and Miami are doing- build a team around the strengths of their QB. If Love is a complete disaster, they at least tried, and can move on, having done their due diligence. If they choose option 2, the "will he/won't he" scenario will be played out for at least one more off-season. And with no viable backup plan at QB, the team would be joining the mad scramble for a "transitional QB" if Rodgers just decides to retire. That means they would be irrelevant for years to come. Unless they get lucky, and land someone like Burrow or Mahones. But since I don't exactly trust the ability of this team to judge talent, that would be unlikely, IMO.
The answer seems obvious. And as far as all the MVPs Rodgers has gotten, good for him. Brady has been league MVP three times. He has also won seven SB's out of ten appearances. And was MVP five times.

Honestly this is not a difficult decision in the least. This is the easiest off-season decision they have to make, run as far away from Rodgers as possible. Hopefully via a trade to at least recoup some assets for a past his prime QB & if I was the Packers while trying to get the best trade scenario possible in assets I wouldn't get to greedy to hamper the process. Lets drop the notion that he may retire, this is not happening. Rodgers is not leaving $60M plus on the table. Therefore the Packers can do anything they want as far as moving him but I would work with him to a desired location.

Decisions are always easy for those who know they will not be held accountable for their decision. We are free to come into CHTV and denounce the Packers FO for even considering keeping Aaron Rodgers. Many in here will approve. That's why you have the upvotes you were hoping for.

Your opinion will fade into non existence, as will mine. Theirs won't. Saying this is not a difficult decision sitting our keyboards, as if we had a clue what it's like to make that decision, is complete nonsense.

I don't care which side of the argument you are on, it is disingenuous to blow this off as an easy peasy piece of cake no brainer. Trading away a HOF QB is not easy. Trading away the QB you drafted to replace him is not easy. You get it wrong and you are looking for a job.

My guess is you will still have your job no matter how it turns out, as will I :)

They already made the decision by drafting Love in the first place. You dont make that move, go right up to the edge of the cliff, then decide to turn back. Its too late for all that. If theyre worried abouf keeping their jobs, being right about Love is the only way they should keep their jobs. I dont care what happens with Rodgers at this point but if Love doesnt end up being this team's eventual longterm starter then everyone involved with drafting him should be shown the door. Time for the moment of truth.

The AJones re-signing may signal something here in favor of Love. Having a dynamic running back (no offense to AJ) will be needed for Love to succeed. So that was a good signing. We’ve got 2 if not 3 good young WRs which I’m sure Love has been spending time with. So that’s good. And of course, the OL is probably the most important and it looks like the chess pieces were moved around enough last year that things looks promising. So that’s good. Add a couple of good draft picks and maybe a FA or 2 and we may have something on offense!!

"If the Packers trade him this year, there will be a $ 40.3 million hit in dead money, $ 9 million more than his projected cap hit for the Packers if he plays. But things get much worse in the future if Green Bay decides to give their veteran quarterback one or two more seasons. The dead money in 2024 would be $68.21 million, and $76.8 million in 2025."

THIS, right here is all you really need to consider for 2023 and beyond. Rodgers ISN'T winning a SB in GB again, his contract saw to that. But starting Love in 2023, getting the experience while adding a pick or two to what the Packers already have in this years draft is what it's all about and what's best.

Nobody said he was horrible. But I dont remember anyone declaring him the next great that year either which is the whole point. People are afraid of turning to Love because he hasnt looked like the next great qb yet. Well neither did Rodgers. Not even in his 1st year starting, which was his 4th year in the league. It wasnt until his 5th year in the league people starting talk about Rodgers being truly special. Thompson had to take a leap of faith based on the talent and growth Rodgers had show up until that point before he would find out high Rodgers' ceiling would ultimately be. Were never gonna know what Love's ceiling is until Gute finds the courage to take that same leap of faith that Thompson took with Rodgers. Their career archs are nearly identicle at this point.

Love needs to spend time with his WR's and just move the chains and use his legs a little and a big part or the run game to be successful. I would like a legit #1 WR if Love starts this season and a very good TE. I think he'd be good to go with that. If AR is traded to a pretty loaded team with more than 2 weapons GB has had since 2018, then I do believe he could win a Super Bowl with that team...If they have a top 5 Defense. AR is not what he was but he would be more motivated and have a more show ready team. Gute is not very good at adding pieces into the mix at the right time and it take the team up a notch or two and ML is not the coach to take us to the show either.....We may just be waiting 5 more years for a great team and HC smart enough to do his part...not to mention DC.

The Packers are done with Rodgers. Rodgers is trying to hide that fact with his "hello darkness my old friend" adventure and attempt at trying to save face. Both sides were trying to save face, but the Packers may have flinched first. Probably intentionally. Doesn't matter. Even if his ego is so big that he feels he must let that chip on his shoulder out weigh what is good for the team and him, the Packers will part with him. He can accept that and move on or continue to harbor ill feelings and drag everyone down with him. Unless Murphy is a complete and utter fool, they move on to Love.

Hopefully Gute has the balls to tell Murphy this...
"Be silent. Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I did not pass through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm."

Rodgers time has come to an end in GB. If he had said at the end of the past 4 seasons YES I am still gonna be here next season then he would be our QB with out no doubts but his antics of holding the front office hostage until the last second so they have no time to make a plan has made their decision easy, He will get traded and let the era of Love begin. Personally I wish it had started last year. Should have traded him and Tae as a package deal for a kings ransom to build around JL10. It would seem the young receivers like Jordan as well and need to grow together so the next 5 years or more will have the arrow pointing up. With Rodgers thinking he's so great he doesn't have to work with his young guys to build a rapport he's hurting the team as much as he is with his over the top contract! Time to move on.

Some here may remember before the 2007 draft, after Favre said he was returning for another season, rumors were rampant the Packers were going to trade Rodgers to the Raiders for Randy Moss.

But on Day 2 of the draft, the Patriots traded for Moss and Rodgers remained in GB.

According to Andrew Brandt, who was a Packer executive at the time, Team Rodgers was constantly whining to the FO that "if you aren't going to start Rodgers, then trade him already".

They almost did! Interesting that the Packers' brass was no way sold on Rodgers replacing Favre in his 3rd year.

Love is probably better positioned as the next starter with the current FO than Rodgers was in 2007.

I believe in MLF's scheme, the same scheme that Love now knows front to back. I also believe in the players around Love who were drafted for specific roles in that scheme. He doesnt have to play like 2020 Rodgers for this offense to be top 5. He just needs to do his part to keep the offense on schedule and hopefully be able make the occasional off schedule play when necessary. People are convinced this team will take a step back once Love plays but Im not one of them. I fully expect the offense as a whole to improve immensely because it wont be beholden to two different offensive philosophies canibalizing each other for supremacy.. Imagine, if you will, an offense where the players are on the same page with the coaches and there's no question about what they're trying to do. Boy, I sure would like to live in a world like that. We're so close I can almost smell it.

Well it is kinda like this my friends. I was there through the greatest Era ever 1961-1968. Which means I was also there in the worst Era ever 1969- 1988 when no player and I mean NO players wanted to be in that cold, desolate, boring city (with a tiny blk community). There were talks of team moving for all you younger s. Yep,Black players hated the thought of coming to GB to play. WE have lived in paradise for the last 33 years because primarily of two QBs. If ya can get Roger's back for a couple more runs then getter done, cause those cold dark years REALLY SUCK

Gets pretty cold in Philly. Hurts didn’t seem to mind. And in todays NFL you can fly anywhere, play golf or drink Auausca tea…

I have been an Aaron Rogers fan since he was given the reigns to this historic franchise and the privilege to lead the Green Bay Packers. He waited and did what was asked of him as another sure - fire first ballot HOF’r was deciding if he had another go in him or not. We are talking about the toughest man to ever wear a Packers uniform maybe even the NFL logo. Any man who sticks around waiting for that opportunity, you bet your ass has my support. This is the exact same situation, and you bet your ass Jordan Love has my support. Good Luck Jordan. You only have 100,000 shareholders to answer to! Go Pack Go!!
