It's Make-It or Break-It Time for Packers Fence Sitters

With three preseason games remaining, time is of the essence for those Packers players who have a chance of winning a spot on the team's 53-man roster.

With three preseason games remaining, time is of the essence for those Packers players who have a chance of winning a spot on the team's 53-man roster.

A good performance in the remaining exhibition games, along with impressive work during training camp practices, can go a long way toward earning a roster berth. Likewise, a poor showing can mean doom for a player's roster life.

The following players are among those who still have a lot riding on their performance the rest of the preseason and whose futures are not determined one way or the other.

This article assumes no serious injuries will occur between now and the end of training camp. A door can be open in a heartbeat for those listed in the "out" category if an injury were to occur. By the same token, just because a player is listed as "out," doesn't mean they may not stick around on the practice squad.

Quarterbacks

Locks: Aaron Rodgers

Graham Harrell––In his fourth season, Harrell knows the Packers offense. Now he's got to start putting the entire package together. It's necessary for Harrell to start completing some downfield passes, or the team will find someone that can.

Vince Young––Young only gets the benefit of the doubt for so long. He has to prove capable in a game setting if the Packers are going to invest a roster spot into Young for the long term.

Out: B.J. Coleman

Running Back

Locks: Eddie Lacy, DuJuan Harris, Johnathan Franklin

James Starks––Based on his play early in training camp, Starks is ahead of Alex Green for a final roster berth at running back. The key will be for Starks to continue his string of solid play, and perhaps even more importantly, stay healthy.

Alex Green––Green needs to have good preseason performances because he's not only auditioning for the Packers, he's auditioning for every team in the NFL. Unfortunately, he just hasn't shown the same explosion as he had pre-surgery following an ACL tear in 2011.

John Kuhn––It is with great trepidation Kuhn is listed as being on the roster bubble. His obvious worth is as a pass protector for Aaron Rodgers. If it's third and long and the Packers absolutely know they're going to throw the football, who else would you rather have lining up next to Rodgers in the backfield?

Out: Angelo Pease, Jonathan Amosa

Wide Receivers

Locks: Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, James Jones, Jarrett Boykin

Jeremy Ross––It only helps Ross's cause that Cobb has a lingering biceps issue. He's the front-runner to take over return duties from Cobb and become a fifth or sixth option at wide receiver, but he must show consistency with his ball security in catching kicks, punts and passes. Muffs, fumbles and drops can simply not be tolerated.

Tyrone Walker––Walker has impressed, going so far seeing playing time with the first-string offense in the absence of Nelson and Cobb. The question is, is there room to keep a fifth or sixth wide receiver that doesn't figure to be active on game days during the regular season assuming all the other receivers are healthy?

Out: Charles Johnson, Kevin Dorsey, Myles White, Alex Gillett, Omarius Hines, Justin Wilson

Tight Ends

Locks: Jermichael Finley, Matthew Mulligan

D.J. Williams––Williams' game against the Cardinals in Week 1 of the preseason basically defined his career thus far in a nutshell. He followed up a beautiful fingertip catch with two drops. He has to be more consistent in both his receiving and his blocking if he's going to stick another season in Green Bay.

Andrew Quarless––Quarless hasn't played since December of 2011. Time is running out for the player who suffered a gruesome knee injury. He has to get back out on the field and prove that he's healthy. One option available to Quarless is to stick around as the one player designated for return on injured reserve if his current quad injury lingers.

Ryan Taylor––Taylor returned from his recent knee injury not a moment too late. Like Quarless, he needs to be on the field to prove his worth. Special teams alone will not be enough for Taylor to stick around. He needs to show he can play on offense too.

Brandon Bostick––The only way Bostick can make the roster is if he starts making some nice downfield catches and does good things with the ball in his hands. He may have potential, but he has yet to show it in a professional game environment.

Out: Jake Stoneburner

Offensive Line

Locks: David Bakhtiari, Josh Sitton, Evan Dietrich-Smith, T.J. Lang, Don Barclay, Marshall Newhouse, Greg Van Roten, Bryan Bulaga (IR), J.C. Tretter (PUP)

Lane Taylor––Taylor graded out the highest of any player on the Packers offense in the team's first preseason game, according to ProFootballFocus.com. But is there room on the team's roster for a player who appears to be strictly a guard, at least at this point in his development?

Derek Sherrod––If Sherrod were to be cleared to return, he might have a chance at winning a backup tackle job. But as it stands, it appears the Packers will have to choose between cutting Sherrod outright, or having him start the season on the PUP list.

Out: Andrew Datko, Patrick Lewis, Garth Gerhart, Kevin Hughes

Defensive Line

Locks: B.J. Raji, Datone Jones, Ryan Pickett, C.J. Wilson, Mike Neal, Mike Daniels, Jerel Worthy (PUP)

Johnny Jolly––It appears as if six defensive linemen are locks on the Packers' roster and a potential seventh spot will come down to a choice between Jolly and Josh Boyd. Jolly has the edge in experience. He's had an impressive camp so far, but Jolly can't afford to regress whatsoever.

Josh Boyd––Working in Boyd's favor over Jolly is that he's younger and on a four-year contract. Jolly's contract is up after this season. If things don't work out, there would appear to be a spot on the team's practice squad for Boyd if nothing else.

Out: Jordan Miller, Gilbert Pena

Outside Linebackers

Locks: Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Dezman Moses

Andy Mulumba––The good news for Mulumba is that he's actually been working ahead of Palmer in the outside linebacker rotation so far in training camp. The bad news is that he hasn't done anything outstanding yet. He's been solid but not spectacular.

Nate Palmer––As a sixth round draft choice, you don't want to give up on Palmer too early, but he clearly hasn't done much of anything so far in his brief Packers career. A couple sacks in preseason action could change that.

Out: Donte Savage, Jarvis Reed

Inside Linebackers

Locks: A.J. Hawk, Brad Jones, Robert Francois, Jamari Lattimore, Terrell Manning, Sam Barrington

It's hard to see the Packers parting ways any of the six inside linebackers on the roster. While the four backups beyond Hawk and Jones may not see a lot of regular season playing time, they'll comprise the core of the team's special teams units.

Out: None

Cornerbacks

Locks: Tramon Williams, Casey Hayward, Sam Shields, Davon House, Micah Hyde, Jarrett Bush

The injuries to Williams and Hayward could open a door for another cornerback if their ailments continue to linger. But unless that happens, the Packers would appear to be set with a group of six cornerbacks on their regular-season roster.

Out: James Nixon, Loyce Means, Brandon Smith

Safety

Locks: Morgan Burnett, Jerron McMillian, M.D. Jennings

Sean Richardson––Obviously Richardson needs to become cleared for action to earn a spot on the team's roster. But he might be the only player capable of earning the fourth safety spot. While Fulton and Banjo might be good candidates for the practice squad, it's difficult to see either of them making the 53-man roster. The Packers may need to look to the waiver wire to find another safety.

Out: David Fulton, Chris Banjo, Chaz Powell

Special Teams

Locks: Tim Masthay, Brett Goode

Mason Crosby––It's absolutely necessary for Crosby to have  solid showing in the remaining preseason games. He's already on shaky ground, and the Packers can't afford to allow him to work through his struggles for much longer.

Giorgio Tavecchio––Tavecchio is competing with Crosby and every other kicker in training camps across the NFL. He has to impress or the Packers may not be afraid to pick up another team's castoff.

43 locks.

My last 10:
1. Young
2. Starks
3. Kuhn
4. Ross (Walker to PS)
5. D.J. Williams
6. Bostick
7. Boyd
8. Mulumba
9. (Safety TBD)
10. Crosby

Probably some unpopular choices. Like no Walker because I don't think keeping 6 WRs on the 53 is prudent. But there are always surprises.

Walker is tough because unlike someone like Boyd, I do think he's shown enough in the pre-season to possibly get scooped up by another team.

Like Gurley?
Every team has their own "Walker" in camp. When it comes to practice squad players, teams tend to stick with the guys they know as opposed to someone who they've just got film on.

Can't find a single point to disagree with. Nice breakdown.

As for Jolly vs. Boyd, I think/hope that Boyd's practice squad eligibility will work in Jolly's favor.

I think C.J. Wilson and Dezman Mozes are on the fence as well.

Jolly and Boyd are similar guys as CJ, so if one of them or both of them outplay CJ, he might be gone.

Dezman Mozes is not having a great camp. Mulumba might actually be the better player. If Neal will be used at lot as OLB, the pack might go with just 3 OLB's. Remember that several of those 6 ILB's can play on the outside as well.

Moreover I don't think that James Nixon, Chaz Powell and Chris Banjo are out (just long shots).

I think they keep 4 de jure OLBs. But I definitely agree on the Neal point. But only a little on the ILB point. Because Jones isn't moving, and I think then out of the rest of them only Lattimore actually spent one year on the outside.

Yeah, but I don't look at him as a full-time OLB. Maybe I should be?

And if Neal is a full-time OLB, that opens up a roster spot on the DL for Jolly.

I haven't seen any of those "reports" on Wilson. I think he and Jolly are fighting for a roster spot. Same player really, and Jolly was outstanding on the #1 run D in '09, while Wilson is allegedly a good run defender on really bad run D's. Got links to the Wilson reports? I would like to read them...

I agree about the safeties. Even if they only keep one more guy beyond Burnett, Jennings, and McMillian, is that guy going to be someone who's been gone for nine months with a neck injury, or will it be someone who's put in the practice time?

My sleeper/surprise pick is that Chris Banjo makes the roster.

I liked what I saw from him in the first preseason game, and McCarthy has said that he likes the way Banjo plays.

He is my sleeper pick to make the roster.

"McCarthy has said that he likes the way Banjo plays." Best banjo player since Deliverance.

To Luca's point it's hard to believe Moses job is in jeopardy considering how much we were enamored with him last year. But if Mulumba is better, then we have to consider letting Moses go. Wonder if Mulumba is a ST contributor.

Speaking of ST's, Barrington's status as a first team STer just about cements his spot on the team. I would guess that inclusion on the first-team ST is an excellent barometer as to whether someone ends up making the team.

Just to note, Moses and Mulumba play on different sides. While that doesn't lock them into a roster spot, it does indicate that they're not necessarily fighting for the same spot. If I recall correctly, Moses backs up Matthews and Mulumba backs up Perry.

Boyd is not getting cut. He looked pretty good in pre-season game 1. Raji, Pick, Wilson, and Jolly are all free agents. No chance Boyd gets cut. No chance Ross gets cut either. We have no other returner behind him and Cobb.

Franklin is not a returner at this point.

I wouldn't say johnson and dorsey are out either. They just need one really good game to show their stuff and they're right back in it.

Not that anyone cares, but here is my roster breakdown.

Starks was my last man cut. I would love to cut Kuhn, but I just don't see it happening. I would also love to cut Bush and give Hyde his job, but that might be premature.

6 ILBs seems like a ton (I'd rather see a 5th OLB - Mulumba, perhaps), but I defer to Brian's point about special teams.

One obvious gripe I have with this is the lack of an OLB on the practice squad. At least 1 of Mulumba, Palmer, and maybe even Savage will stick on the 53+PS. And I think the spot will be created by one less WR being retained.

Overall I agree... I am thinking though that they will keep 5 RB's. Either keeping Starks or Green. Not sure where else they would cut someone, its just my thinking.

Also I think they will keep Mulumba at OLB. So that would be another position they will remove someone, possibly one of the ILBs?
Is Manning practice squad eligible?

TE, I think they will keep either Quarless or Williams over Taylor.

OL, I think Lane Taylor will be the 8th player to make the roster.

S, I can see them having a 4th or else making Bush their 4th Safety. I can see them going a number of different ways at S. I do believe though that Banjo could make the roster. I am watching him going forward.

Overall I agree though.

Yeah, Starks was a tough call (my 54th player). I just sort of think his time might have passed with so much fresh blood at RB.

I'm going to start watching Banjo more closely too. I've been assuming the 4th S would be more of a veteran waiver claim, but who knows.

Yeah, I'm not saying Starks is a lock by any stretch. I just have a feeling they will keep 4 pure RB's.

I think Starks has performed better then Green thus far, and that's why I would say he would make it over Green.

I wouldn't doubt at all if they would pick up a cut player from another team (Charlie Peprah). I just was impressed with Banjo in the little I saw him. And he got a thumbs up from Jason Wilde for yesterday's practice. Plus McCarthy said he likes him.
I'm definitely going to watch him as well. I'm not saying he will make the roster, but out of the safety's on the team trying to win the 4th spot, I think he has the best shot. And there are always surprise players to make the roster. To me he would be my choice for a surprise player.

I am not sure that i would rule out Starks yet. The running back position has taken a pounding and if Starks (and any other back) doesn't need to be pressed into service each week and allowed to recover from nagging injuries before they become lost-time injuries, his contributions could be substantial. As much as i hate to say this, Kuhn may be on his way out... no fullback, or the big rookie being the fullback.

Hrer's my deal, either Starks, who I don't care for his running style of lack of, is a starter or he isn't. I do not see the need for him to be the third guy. Just my thoughts.

They only activate 7 OL during games, anyhow. If Taylor was on the 53 he would be wearing sweatpants during games... waste of space.

Let him sit on the PS. If an interior guy goes down Taylor can be brought up for the following game. If it's a tackle who gets injured, bring up Datko.

If you have 8 OL on the 53 you're gonna have to sacrifice a special teams contributor.

Also - I take Boyd over Jolly (even though Jolly's better right now) due to age, growth potential, contract status, and the fact that they just dropped a 5th rd'er on him.

I don't think the question is about Boyd or Jolly. Your right Boyd gets it based on age and potential more likely than not. The real question is Jolly or Wilson. Wilsons a decent run defender on a bad run D and Jolly was the best DL on the #1 run D in '09. Jolly is more stout at the point of attack IMO. Jolly can knock down passes. Jolly bring toughness and an attitude that we NEED. What does Wilson provide? Just another player who is supposed to be a good player, but no additional abilities or qualities to separate himself.

This thread has intrigued me. With Rodgers playing 99.9% of the snaps, I just cannot see the Psckers keeping 3 quarterbacks. I think that their hope was for Coleman to take over #2, and as a result of that not appearing to be the case, then I see him in year @2 of the practice squad. However, that would indicate that the Pack WAS NOT happy with the progress of Harrell, and, if that is the case, why not take a shot at an experienced quarterback who, hopefully, will not be needed but has time to develop within the system. I can see Young as the #2 guy. It is interesting that you did not pick Green, Cow, but, if he isn't making the grade after the knee surgery, that is understood. I am not sure if he has had enough time to recover completely. As much as I love the guy, I am thinking that Kuhn may have seen his last year as a Packer. With teams going with the pass coverage that they have employed recently, I think that it is essential that the Packers develop a strong running game. This year, they have the horses. I would keep ALL the horses to keep them as healthy as possible...play them when they are healthy. Kuhn has not been much of a threat. Green, if healthy, would be considerably more. I would keep the same backfield, but delete Kuhn, unfortunately, and keep Green or Pease if one is healthy and performing. I concur with your offensive line choices (though i suspect a need for another offensive lineman...Taylor) as well as your wide receivers, though White may be a find and an option in lieu of Ross. Tight end is a tough position though it appears that Finley is a shoe-in... he is also a free agent. If the Packers do not keep Kuhn, I can see them using that tight end out of the backfield as a blocker. A good blocking tight end would be great for a ground game. Mulligan seems a sure fit here and Taylor does extremely well on special teams. If Quarless comes back from that horrible knee injury, I don't think Williams has a chance. If not, Stoneburner may get his shot! I concur with your choices on special teams.
Defense is an entirely different matter. Jolly was always intimidating before his exit from football and, though i doubted that he could return, if he does return as he was, or near what he was, his play is a tremendous inspiration to his team as well as disruptive to the opponent. My take is that the d-line needs at least seven men and maybe even eight. I am thinking that Capers is going to pull another feather out of his cap and bring in a 4 man front at times... mix things up, and with Neal being cross-trained as a linebacker, that may make room for Jolly on the line. With pass rush being essential in todays game, I lean toward stashing a few good pass-rushing outside linebackers on the squad and less inside backers. Didn't the Pack often pull an inside linebacker to play an extra corner? I see Bush and Hyde as possibly the swing guys for safety/defensive back and eliminating Richardson as safety. I believe there are going to be some real good players on injured reserve, yet, I think this team has a great shot.

Young will get more playing time. MM & TT like high draft picks. If MM can make a passer out of Young the 2nd qb spot will be a worry of the past. The dude can flat out run.

I don't see how Wilson is a lock. IMO he and Jolly are fighting for one roster spot between them. Wilson is supposed to be a good run defender, but he's always been on Bad run D's, so really how good can he be? Jolly on the other hand was the best DL and outstanding run defender on the #1 run D in 09. They are basically the same player, except Jolly is probably better, plus he can knock down a lot of passes. He's what 3 yrs older than Wilson... I just don't see the Packers keeping Wilson and Jolly and I think its a competition between them for a roster spot.

Wilson is a lock, barring injury, of course.

Wow I almost completely agree, although I would switch quarless, with Williams and loose Francois for starks. Love the banjo call l, got to agree with that.

that may be true.... Starks has an injury problem, but, when healthy, give him the ball... there are going to be injuries in this backfield and horses are needed.
