It's Far Too Soon to Give Up on Jordan Love

The Green Bay Packers offense is struggling through five games but is that really a surprise? The Packers have a quarterback with one career start prior to this season, a rookie starting tight end and no wide receiver on the roster with more than one year of NFL experience.

The injuries the team has dealt with haven’t helped. David Bakhtiari was lost for the season after just one game. Aaron Jones only played one full game and had a very limited role in another. Elgton Jenkins and Christian Watson also missed games due to injury.

Some Packers fans and media members who just crave attention are already turning on quarterback Jordan Love. They are ready to give up on the former Utah State star who has only started five games since taking over as the team’s starting quarterback. One media member claims after five games he can already tell Love is “just a backup.” It’s far too soon to make that judgment.

Many Hall of Fame quarterbacks have struggled after their first five starts. Love is not unique in that regard. That’s not to say he will be a Hall of Famer, but struggling in your first five games doesn’t mean he won’t be a good NFL quarterback for many years to come.

Through his first five starts this year, Love is 90-of-162 for 1,083 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions. He also ran for two touchdowns. His record is 2-3.

In his first five starts in 2008, Aaron Rodgers completed 103-of-163 passes for 1,274 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions and he ran for two scores. His record was 2-3.

In 1992, Brett Favre connected on 109-of-169 attempts for 1,135 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. He did not run for a touchdown. Favre’s record was also 2-3.

Drew Brees made his first five career starts in 2002. He completed 83-of-138 passes for 843 yards. He threw five touchdowns and four interceptions and won four of his first five starts.

John Elway completed just 38-of-83 attempts for 420 yards. He only threw one touchdown and four interceptions and did not run for any scores. His team went 2-3 in those first five starts.

Yes, Love has had his struggles, but he has also showed potential. When you add the injuries to the offensive line, the inexperienced receivers and the absence of the team’s top running back, there are plenty of reasons for Love’s struggles.

There are some things that need to be improved. Love’s accuracy on longer throws has been poor. His overall completion percentage also needs to be better.

But Love has also showed some important skills and the ability to make plays under pressure. He can scramble to avoid the rush and gain yardage with his legs. He can also extend plays by avoiding pressure.

Love has the support of his teammates who recognize his leadership qualities. He has been encouraging to his young teammates and spent time working with them during the offseason and attended all voluntary OTAs.

His arm strength is very good and his ability to read defenses has continued to improve.

Love also has the support of his predecessor. Rodgers had this to say about Love after the Packers loss to the Raiders on Monday night which was arguably Love’s shakiest performance of the season.

“The important thing as a quarterback is just trying to keep your confidence, not getting into all the bulls***, realize it’s just part of it,” Rodgers said on the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday. “There’s going to be ups and downs in your career, ups and downs in the season. You’ve just got to keep pushing through, be the same guy every day.”

He also added, “I sent Jordan Love a message last night and he’s a great kid. The important thing as a QB is to keep your confidence and we all go through growing pains. He's gonna be around a while and that Packers team is gonna get it fixed.”

Love may never become a great NFL quarterback. He also could still develop into a Pro Bowl caliber player or be even better than that. But to write him off after five starts this season is premature.

As Vince Lombardi once said, “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” Love is struggling now in his first season as a starter. How he responds and develops as a quarterback will determine his future and the future of the 2023 Green Bay Packers.

My only concern with Love is accuracy issues, which is kind of a big deal for a QB. He's been worked with for 3 years - can you teach accuracy? If his throwing doesn't improve, he's not going to be the guy, if it does improve, he's got all the other tools you want.

practice, pre-season and scout team work are not comparable to live game action.

Its not all on JLove...people complained that Rodgers wasnt accurate last year also...the common theme is the green WR's...guys running wrong routes or the right routes ran poorly can make a QB look inaccurate.

Hard to tell if the accuracy issues are the problem with the WRs are not experienced with the routes.

Rodgers was called washed up last year because he was inaccurate and now Love is being called inaccurate...the one factor that has stayed true is the green WR's... its the WR's...guys doing film breakdown were pointing out bad routes and wrong routes last year and its been the same this year. Those things werent as bad of a problem when we were winning 13 games a year and Rodgers was winning MVP's...its the young WR's...

Apart from Doubs and then Watson playing one after the other healthily, last year the snaps went to Watkins initially, but then primarily to Lazard and Cobb with some for Tonyan. Last year was old and slow plus one rookie. Sorry, last year you can’t blame the youth on O. Quite the opposite.

Watkins was one of the guys that was running wrong routes lol. Watson and Doubs were unpolished at route running last year. Watson ran bad routes against the Raiders but i'm chalking it up to him not still getting into game form, Doubs is better this year. Just young players with potential not mastering all the little technical details of playing the position at the pro level. It took Davante some time too. Why is it hard to believe that green players are gonna take some time???? Do you really think that after all this time in the NFL MLF is drawing up plays with 3 targets within 7 yards of each other???? Or maybe these guys are making mistakes that you typically see from young players??? Its not all on the WR's but when you've got so much youth at WR, TE and QB maybe its inexperience....

Doesn't accuracy have a lot to do with the QB getting his feet set right before making the throw? I think Clements should be helping with that. But under pressure, bad habits come back to rule the day. And he's been under pressure both by opposing defenses, and under pressure to score some points and win some games. And then with the young WRs and route issues, there's a lot affecting the accuracy issue.

In college he was known as a gunslinger, willing to throw into tight windows, and his turnovers as a Junior sure indicate that. But the staff should know what he can do and help him a bit with scheme to get into some kind of rhythm. Hard to do when the line isn't protecting well and there are so many penalties backing them up on early downs.

I agree with this. Accuracy will make or break Love. Not all the games have been available to me, but my sense is often his throw is accurate but a bit late. So, can he speed up? Seems like experience (for Love and the receivers) will help.

This incessant need to compare Rodgers and Love is nauseating. They're two completely different types of QB. The players each had differed and so is the style of football allowed for Defenses and Offenses isn't even close anymore. No matter how one tries to compare a bad apple and a bad orange, both are still different and cannot be used for legitimate comparison.

To justify Love in this manner is unfair to both. As much as so many believe Love is not Rodgers, it sure is a never ending attempt to make them one and the same. I don't care what the comparative stats narrative creates, I care only about what is being done by Love in 2023, not what Rodgers did in 2008. It's a weak excuse or reason to use to defend Love or diminish Rodgers.

When this type of agenda is a need, it tells me those people doing it really have no faith in who they're trying to protect, or the play of that player. Support the player or not, but end the Rodgers comparison scapegoat bs.

While I agree in one sense, the comparisons of metrics actually serve to remind those who keep remembering the Rodgers of his pomp and juxtaposing it on Rodgers thus far in to his first year starting. For that reason alone it’s not completely pointless. At the moment there’s not a vast amount in it.

Gill wasn't comparing him to Rodgers.

Gill was comparing the start of Love's career to other great QBs starts. He could have added Troy A. or Peyton M's and others too.

He was actually just saying that it's too soon. Not making excuses. He and we don't know yet. Just give it time.

The readers/posters at this site, including myself, just want to have an idea as to how Love is progressing and that is the only reason for the comparison. Admitedly, I am not smart enough to know if 'Love' is the 'one' or not and a comparison does help to a certain extent. We all know that Love will not be another Rodgers' as he is in a league of (most of) his own.

I would hope we learn how good Love is this year so we can determine if he is our QB of the future or if we need to draft another one.

Well, not according to those who need to make the comparison. In fact, one might derive from it being a constant, that they believe Love to be on the same path as Rodgers'. HoF, here he comes.

As to the progress of Love, it's minute, and even harder to rewatch, which means regression is winning.

I would like to see him comparable to the Favre/Rodgers dynamic!

He is to be evaluated in comparison to his peers from the 2020 Draft: Herbert, Tua, Hurts and Burrow. These are the guys he will be competing against, not an apparition, or fleeting moment from the Past. He is being anchored by Gutedkunst's personnel decisions. This guy needs to be on the phones, looking for an OT and a back up RB.

We have two dominant OTs who aren't playing. If anything, we need depth on the interior O line.
We let Goodson go and aren't playing #31 Wilson. Bringing in more RBs to not play them either would be as wasteful as giving JB more first round picks.

Everybody said our S room was terrible; is that no longer a position of need?

You’ve clearly missed the point of the article. Gil is not comparing any one to the other but rather pointing out that quarterbacks start out raw, even the great ones. And it takes time to learn how to be a quarterback in the NFL. And that doesn’t change from player to player or era to era. The stats aren’t the narrative. They’re just your narrative.

So Taryn, for me at least there is an undeniable
Truth. Look at all the teams in the playoffs year in and year out. They all have way above average QB Play. There’s probably an outlier here or there but for the most part they have excellent QB play. In the world of team sport comparison? Ya it’s a team sport, and those winning teams typically have winning QB’s.

I couldn’t care less about comparing Love to Rodgers or Favre, but I will always compare him to being a winning Qb, or not. What we’re watching and likely to continue watching is losing football, and mediocre QB play.

My question is for how long? How long are fans expected to be happy watching losing football or losing QB play? If this team goes 4 & 13, is it OK? Is it automatic that we have to suffer a 2nd year of bad QB play?

Not in my world! If by week 12 we’re out of playoff contention, Clifford should be getting some starts. Let’s quit saying Love is a Rookie, or treating him like one! He’s a 4 year Vet that currently plays below average NFL football.

Gil's article is directed at you and fans like you who want the Packers to just win now regardless. Not only do we need to have patience we need to understand that a lot of things out of Love's control affect how he 'looks' as a QB. Things like green WR's still learning how to run routes good enough at the pro level. Or rookie TE's knowing how to block to help the running game, which in turn helps the passing game. The Packers are a 'draft AND develop' team. Not 'draft and win'. The develop part doesnt take just one training camp, it takes a year or two sometimes 3 of live games....Love has the same amount of pro level game experience as the rookies so yes, in a lot of ways he is a rookie.

After almost 30 years of good QB play and teams competing for the playoffs yes, you as a fan are expected to have some patience and deal with the life altering consequences of watching the Packers play bad football for at least a season or two...I'm sure there are some hotlines you can call or maybe gather your friends and family together and let them know that you really need them right now and that you are going through some pretty serious stuff right now in your life. Me and the other Packer fans are gonna watch the games and when the Packers win we are gonna enjoy the fuck out of it and when they lose we are gonna shrug our shoulders, say "well, they arent winning yet oh well, young team" and move on with our lives without an second thought...Its a game were grown men play with a ball and have cartoon characters on their hats. Chill out....

Isn't this a reason the FO nixed the 5th year option, so they have an out from Love if he doesn't meet the desired level expected. At the moment, and it could change, how does the FO not ponder, at least, the possibility of getting a QB in the next draft. At this rate of play, it wouldn't be tanking, just losing.

You’re right on here! Ron Wolf used to draft quarterbacks all the time. At one time he had Brett Favre, Ty Detmer, Mark Brunell, and Kurt Warner in one training camp. The Packers need to keep drafting a quarterback, until we have excellent quarterback play on the field and excellent depth that can be used if needed, or traded for value. Love has been in the NFL for 4 seasons. He’s not a rookie. If he can’t put it all together by now, he’s probably not going to. If they’re out of the playoff race by week 12, I definitely want to see Clifford.

Maybe in hindsight but at the same time it might have pushed Arod's buttons in a competitive way... Arod's mentality might have changed from "Now it's my time" to "Fuck that guy, I'M QB1!" The great ones always seem to be competitive to the point of being damn near psychotic about it. Plus if Arod got hurt would you rather find out what a different young QB has or waste a roster spot on a journeyman with a low ceiling of talent. The Niners had their guy in Lance and opted to not go with a known backup and that turned out pretty damn good but I'll admit that is usually not the case. Until you have 'The Guy', bring in draft picks and see if somebody takes the job. It doesnt always work out but when it does...

So the Vor would have had Brohm starting in 2008? I think that is enough of a riposte on its own.

Although I was a Rodgers backer back then, I don’t think we as a majority community really felt certain till the latter half of 2009. Even then some noisily berated his inability to win from behind etc.

I’ve always said, the first point of reference is where we are at year end. That hasn’t changed for me, though the chaos on the OL, the issues with routes and catchable ball percentages and the lack of any run game are making it harder. Time will help crystallize those and make it a little easier to sift through the issues to form a worthwhile opinion. Even in January, I doubt we know for sure.

It wasn't just Rodgers he was being compared to. The whole point of the article is that some Hall of Fame talents had a rough first year, similar to what we're seeing from Love. Payton Manning had 26 TDs and 28 picks as a rookie and a 56.7 completion percentage to go along with the 3-13 team record. The point is that you can't judge Love at this point in his career. Many franchise QBs have looked worse when they started out.

I gave him the absolute benny of the doubtfire not knowing what kind of QB we had. First two games werent bad.
Last three, werent good. Decided to look into his past at college and wow. He is exactly the same guy playing wise and stats wise as he was, and were talking three years ago.
Gutt screwed up and made a bad decision. This guy should have been closer to a round four pick then anything else.
My estimation is by the end of the season the fans will want to wish he a goodbye and good luck to wherever he ends up. This is not a playoff caliber or get you to the playoff caliber QB. and he's not young either, he's been here three years.
Quite honestly the hardy green bay fans deserved a lot better then this. You got screwed royally.

Looks like the same player as in the scouting reports out of college. Accuracy issues, poor against pressure and has problems reading defenses, These are in my mind the most important qualities in a QB. Has anyone noticed beside me how slow Loves release is. If these dont change it is a total bust especially for a 1st round pick at a position GB did not need at the time.

You gotta look a little past the stats alone and put things in context. As a sophomore, he had 32 TDs and 6 picks, completion % of 64%. As a Jr, he lost his HC, was under a new coaching regime, and lost many of his favorite targets.

At this point it does not matter at all where he was picked; it only matters if he can curb bad habits and improve. We've seen some thrilling ability so far, and some things that need improvement for him to stay in the starting role. That's about all we know so far. The play calling is not helping him, nor is it helping to have so little experience at WR and none at the TE position.

He was never going to be a playoff calibre his first year starting.

Given how poorly the Packers OL has played, especially over the last 2 games, it's not reasonable to expect a high level of play from any QB especially a first year QB. Having said that Love has compounded some his own problems with poor throws and some poor decision making. These are growing pains for any 1st year QB in the NFL. Add in the facts that he is missing Aaron Jones, who is the Packers best offensive weapon, and his receiving corps does not include one receiver who has played a complete NFL season.

Beyond that I'm not sure what the Packers coaching staff is trying to accomplish in terms of an offensive game plan from week to week. It's almost like they're just pulling any plays out of the playbook to try them out to see if they will work. Nothing is being done to set up plays for later in the game. The use of players has been very haphazard. Also for whatever reason they are not utilizing their 5 best OLs. With BaK out for the season the OL should be; Nijman, Jenkins, Tom, Runyon and Walker at RT rather than LT.

It is time for this coaching staff to get the OL straightened out and with Aaron Jones hopefully returning after the bye week they can get the run game on track to take some pressure off of Love and if they actually stick with the ground game they can get back to quick play action passes to keep the chains moving. Get some quick easy completions for Love, get him in rhythm and build his confidence.

Regardless of the final won-loss record the Packers still have time to get the offense in sync, play better and stack success to build the future on.
Thanks, Since '61

We had a poor O line last year and how did Rodgers do?

I'm not sure that's a true statement, coolhand. I recall our offensive line doing well in the rankings, and if Jones/Dillon got 2500 yards, somebody got blocked.

It’s never too early to panic and do something stupid.

Weren’t we 3-6 at some point last season? Haven’t we made the playoffs when we were only .500 at Thanksgiving. Couldn’t we be 3-3 after our next game.? Hey, we’re struggling, like we knew they would.

They’ll either fix what’s wrong or there’ll be changes made. I think we’ll fix the offense.

Does love needs to step up his game? Yes, for sure likewise the whole team around him should step up and also the coaching staff should scheme better to put all their players in the best positions to succeed. But it's not fair to have this conversation on a QB with just 6 career starts.

while yes, it is too soon to give up... it's also true Love needs to improve his accuracy IMMENSELY. Even the first 2 games where he had 6 tubs and 0 picks, he was still missing throws and not allowing his receivers to get YAC. He needs to improve his ability to read defenses. He needs to improve his accuracy, particularly on deep balls. I will say, his ability to fight back from behind was a refreshing thing to see. But why do they seemingly need to always fight back from behind? Takes him too long to get into a rhythm in the game.

Long story short... He's shown some flashes. But in terms of consistency, he's just not that guy right now. But he deserves the season to figure it out.

Want to improve Loves accuracy greatly? Copy Purdy’s playbook. Surround him with journeyman vets. It won’t get us anywhere because they won’t be the quality of the 49ers, but it will solve the accuracy issue.

How about giving him an OL that can run block and not get caved in in pass protection and actually learning to run a screen or some crossing routes where we all run the right way, don’t run into each other or all end up in a 10 yard area?

It’s pretty clear that this O is too complex for catchers not named Doubs at this point. You’d think LaFleur could have figured that out in advance. However, he’s clearly being too clever and having the team running before it can walk. Either that or we have some very poor positional teachers or catchers who are universally slow between the ears.

"You’d think LaFleur could have figured that out in advance. "

Considering he botched up the plan last year, he should have at least thought about trying a different approach and yet here we are.

Rodgers 1st season was 6 wins. 6. If Love gets 6 wins…he’s already ahead of the game.

No one is giving up on him with the exception of a few highly impatient fans. Yes, his accuracy needs to improve and that will come with experience and getting to know his WRs and TEs better--hopefully. There are a lot of extenuating circumstances involved here, including injuries, missed blocking assignments, drops, and less than ideal play-calling. Not to make excuses for the QB, but this is realistically what to expect when you have such a young and inexperienced offense "growing together."

As a side note, I hope we're going to be working on getting the ball to Doubs and Reed a lot more moving forward.

We're judging a QB 5 games into his career while on a injured, rebuilding, young ass team? Good Lord Ya'll...
We have 5 years of good, clean, data of Murphy on down to our "hamstrung" (play on words) trainers. I think it's an exercise in futility ramrodding our "know it all" evaluations on a human being with five ass starts playing the hardest position in all of sports while being coached by people who continuously put money into a parking meter and wait for a piece of gum to fall out. Five games? What about five years? Come on GB fans, we're better than this. Leave this knee jerk shit for the Windy City Shitty Pity Bears fans. Anyway... I'm sure this rant will put me into the down vote abyss. GPG

That was a good rant.

Most people here, while giving their honest opinion on where they think Love's at, aren't throwing him under the bus.

All but a couple, on this post still have high expectations and are more critical of the vets and coaches not giving enough support.

Are you kidding me? The comment "people who continuously put money into a parking meter and wait for a piece of gum to fall out" was worth way more than the one up vote I was allowed to give you.

A lot of Packer fans aren't gonna want to hear it but part of supporting Love AND all these young players on offense means providing them some stability at the Head Coach position....

All this talk about firing MLF is very very premature. It would most likely mean that Love and the rest of the kids have to spend an offseason learning a whole new system and all the idiosyncrasies of how the new staff want them to do it. The time to START wondering if MLF needs to go is weeks 8, 9, 10 of NEXT SEASON.... The vast majority of players talk about the game slowing down for them and being able to play faster in their second year of playing as they get used to life at the pro level.

Some good young QB's are sabotaged by knee jerk reactions and constant changing of coaching and systems. I would rather have these kids spend the off season and training camp building off of what they learned this season and using it to get better than tear the whole thing down because an offense with so much youth didnt compete for the division or a WC spot right away.

I suspect you’re right packerfanroy but not sure I can even take one more game of LaFleur. Problem is, kids or not, we’ve seen this lack of preparation, readiness, inventiveness, creativity and game nous for too long now without any hint of corrections or adjustments. Keep hearing the old adage “you are what you emphasise”. Can’t see a lot of what’s being emphasised by this coaching staff (give Bisaccia some slack as I think he does at least know what he wants and what he’s doing) and if we’re being honest we haven’t for a couple of years at least. GoPackGo always.

We have to give MLF some slack for the rebuilding on Offense. MLF hasnt been perfect and Love hasnt been perfect but one constant theme that guys like Kurt Warner and others have highlighted in film breakdown is running the wrong routes or running routes badly. Running routes poorly is something that has to be learned so its a WR's havent been perfect thing also but if they are running the wrong routes that's a huge problem that is on the WR's and it makes Love and MLF look worse than they are. Its a really raw green offense and there are gonna be some ugly spots. Enjoy the fuck out of the wins and just shrug off the losses. Its 'draft and develop' not 'draft and win'. We are gonna have to go this year and next year without the playoffs but hopefully by the later part of next year we can see a team that is getting ready to make playoff runs again. Good teams are built over time bad teams are constantly torn down do to 'win now' knee-jerk reaction owners.

99.9% of the time when guys have accuracy problems, they don’t dramatically improve. Love has been throwing footballs for 15+ years. This is who he was in college, and it is who he still is today.
We should not be treating Jordan Love like a rookie. Unlike a rookie, Love is not learning a new offense. This is his fourth season in the NFL. He has received NFL coaching for three seasons, and all under the same head coach. The offense, at this point, should be as familiar as the back of his hand.
A QB that struggled mightily with accuracy and turnovers in a poor college conference might not be able to overcome those issues to a degree that will make him a viable NFL QB.

Far more disappointed in the players picked to constitute our O line. Never got our "best five" on the field. Maybe those they cut and those they added were reasonable decisions, but I highly doubt that.

What is bothersome about Love's performance so far is that he seems to be regressing. In the earlier games, Love seemed calm, confident and in control. The last two games, it seems he is more nervous, with a sense of urgency and mental "happy feet", if not actual physical discomfort. Whether this is due to having too many coaches giving him instructions, or whether he simply doesn't trust his OL is not clear. The Packers used to be a team that was known for developing talent at QB, in particular. Time to go back to what worked.

Bhaktiari and Jenkins had his left flank. Bhak is out for good and Jenkins returned for the Raiders at 70%. When scrubs are the fill-ins ,bad things can happen. LaFleur needed to move the pocket for him. Tyler Davis was put on IR before the season started. The best blocking TE who was not replaced by a veteran acquisition.

I blame Gutt for selecting him. Based on college play he's not starter material. Why would I expect a so so div 1a QB to be the leader of an NFL team. Or why would anyone expect him to become Rodgers like..
LeFleur has to be hoping his short game and jones can lead the way and I say teams wise up and stack the box stopping both. Couldn't do that with a Rodgers who can throw the deep ball accurately.. If pack fans are okay with avg and losing seasons fine. It's unfair to expect more from this guy he can't deliver it.
