Introducing The Cheesehead TV 2011 NFL Draft Guide

Focused specifically on the Green Bay Packers, this is everything a draft publication should be.

We've hinted at it and teased it, but for the first time, this is our formal announcement introducing the Cheesehead TV 2011 NFL Draft Guide.

It's a 60-plus page, Packers-centric, digital publication in .pdf format available for pre-order for the low, low price of only $5. It will be available on April 7, exactly three weeks before the NFL Draft.

To find out what's inside, here's my letter from the editor exactly as it will appear in the publication...

Dear Packers fan,

Thank you for purchasing the inaugural edition of the Cheesehead TV 2011 Draft Guide, a digital publication designed specifically for Green Bay Packers fans. I’m confident you’re going to love our new take on what a draft preview publication should be like.

As a Packers fan, your attention to the rest of the NFL is probably limited. More than likely you probably only have a passing interest in, say, what the San Diego Chargers or Jacksonville Jaguars are going to do in the draft. That’s where we come into play. We figure, why pay for the magazines on the newsstands when what you really want is cover-to-cover Packers content?

The bulk of any draft publication is the position-by-position previews for quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, etc. But we take a different approach with certain positions.

With the Packers running a 3-4 defense, we don’t just categorize players in linebackers, defensive ends and defensive tackles. We’ve broken up linebackers into outside linebackers and inside linebackers. And because players like B.J. Raji, Cullen Jenkins and Ryan Pickett have all played the 3-4 defensive end position at one time or another and then become a pass-rushing tackle on passing downs, we’ve lumped all those types of players into the category of 3-4 defensive linemen. They have to be versatile enough to play both tackle and end in Dom Capers’ defensive system.

On the offensive line, we’ve broken up players into tackles and interior offensive linemen, because you’ve seen Packers such as Jason Spitz have to be able to play both guard and center.

Futhermore, I’ve asked the writers to put themselves in the shoes of general manager Ted Thompson. If we think there’s a player that doesn’t fit what the Packers do, you might see him ranked lower than usual or not ranked at all.

For example, you’ll notice that players like Auburn’s Nick Fairley, Illinois’ Corey Liuget and North Carolina’s Marvin Austin don’t appear in our defensive line rankings because we don’t think they fit what the Packers do on defense. And you won’t find a 5-9 cornerback at the top of our lists either, because the Packers simply avoid those types of defensive backs.

I’m personally a firm believer in what a player does on the football field. Nothing bores me more than reading about a player’s “lateral agility” or “tight hips" ad nauseam. It’s important to address an athlete’s strengths and weaknesses, but we try to focus on their performance during games more than most other publications.

You’ll read about how players performed on a big stage, such as how they did in a bowl game or against a ranked team. Sometimes we’ll look at how they performed against a conference rival or in an all-star game such as the Senior Bowl. Those performances mean more to me than a player’s “deceptive quickness.”

When looking at team needs, we dedicate the most space to analyzing the perceived needs of the Packers. We then give the next-most space to the teams the Packers play the most, the other members of the NFC North. Accordingly, we give decreasing coverage to the rest of the NFC and the entire AFC.

We also provide the obligatory mock draft, but we try to go the extra mile and provide one that’s three rounds long. Plus, we provide a Packers-specific mock draft attempting to predict whom Green Bay will choose with each of their respective picks in each round.

If you know of a draft publication that gets any more Packers-centric than this, I’d like to see it. With that, enjoy and Go Pack Go!

Sincerely,

Brian Carriveau

I'm just the editor, but this publication has really come to fruition thanks to the hard work of several individuals including publisher Corey Behnke and assistant editor Alex Tallitsch.

We've also assembled an all-star cast of contributors from the NFL blogosphere including Andrew Garda of ThunderingBlurb, "Jersey" Al Bracco of AllGreenBayPackers.com, Aaron Nagler of Cheesehead TV, Paul Guillemette of Pigskin Paul's Place, Max Ginsberg of Purple Pants, Green Jersey, Holly Phelps of BrentFavre.com and Tony Wilson of Maple Street Press.

I'm beyond excited for this, and I hope you are too. Make sure to put in your pre-order now.

Yes, daddy needs a new pair of shoes, NOW. :-) Seriously, if you've ever run any kind of a sign-up event, you know that life is easier when you have more time to deal with the logistics, even if you are largely handling stuff by computer. Give 'em a break (or at least the benefit of the doubt) and order early if you're going to order.

So, are you're breaking down the film of ALL of the draft eligible players games over their college careers or just this year? Or are you using Youtube highlights and draft magazines to help formulate your draft bios? Or all of the above? Etc...

I don't know if you're trying to be snarky or not. Yes, I'm personally using all available resources to help inform my player profiles. I'm watching YouTube highlights and reading draft magazines. I'm also reading tons of journalists' accounts and interviews. I've recorded the Senior Bowl to analyze. And I watched more college football than I care to
admit. Why would I not do these things?

I also personally conducted over 120 interviews at the Combine. One of our contibutors attended the entire of week of Senior Bowl and Shrine game practices in Mobile and Orlando. If you're intimating that we're being slackers, I'm insulted.

I'm officially insulted. Are you familiar with our work here at Cheesehead TV and mine at Maple Street Press? Have you ever seen so much a picture on this website that we either didn't personally take or get permission to use? Have we ever done anything here that would suggest we would plagiarize? Because I watch YouTube highlights and read others' writing, I'm more likely to steal their work? Wow.

Brian answered your absurd question. As for emotions, it's hard for a writer to keep emotions out of his answer when accused of plagerisim. Brian is right to be insulted by your intimation.

"Forms of plagiarism" what does that even mean? You don't even have the balls to ask the question but couch it in some asinine phrase that could mean anything. Dude, grow a pair and speak plain English if you're going to cast aspersions on Brian's work.

" Yes, I’m personally using all available resources TO HELP INFORM MY PLAYER PROFILES. "

..." I’m watching YouTube highlights and READING DRAFT MAGAZINES. I’m also READING TONS OF JOURNALISTS' ACCOUNTS AND INTERVIEWS. "

Why would he be using anything other than what HE saw on tape & what HE had gathered in interviews to make his 'player profiles' if he wasn't plagiarizing? Why would he need those other journalist accounts if he wasn't using their stuff?

You sure have pretty big 'balls' behind that PC of yours. Would you talk like that in person? I have a feeling I already know that answer.

And I think it's cute that you run to his defense like a protective mother, but I think he's man enough to answer his own questions directed at him. Do you wipe his ass after he takes a shit & hold his meat while he's taking a piss too?

The question is so rude it doesn't deserve any more attention than I've given it already. Do you ask all writers if their work is plagiarized before you read their work? Of course you don't. If I lose his readership because he's implying that we will be plagiarizing before he even reads it, it won't be a loss.

is this person saying that if you were to watch a breaking news story on ESPN then tweeted it, you're plagiarizing the story? He/she is clearly confused on that plagiarism actually is.

Hey -- it's stealing someone else's exact work. You would clearly know that without reading it. Well done.

You are an idiot.

"Why would he be using anything other than what HE saw on tape & what HE had gathered in interviews to make his ‘player profiles’ if he wasn’t plagiarizing? Why would he need those other journalist accounts if he wasn’t using their stuff?"

If you believe the above scenarios imply plagiarism, you are a complete moron.

By those standards, 99% of published written word is plagiarism.

For that matter, 99% of intellectual property would be infringing as well.

You, sir, are the Tool of the year.

Research does not equal plagiarism. Research only becomes plagiarism if you actually claim that someone else's idea is your own. In a world full of people, more than one person may permissibly hold the same opinion.

- Plagiarism on the internet -

" Plagiarism is not only the mere copying of text, but also the presentation of another's ideas as one's own, regardless of the specific words or constructs used to express that idea. In contrast, many so-called plagiarism detection services can only detect blatant word-for-word copies of text. "

LOL.

If you/he wasn't plagiarizing to a certain extent then YOUR work would only consist of what YOU guys saw on tape & of what YOU guys got in YOUR interviews. That's all, nothing else. No other 'journalist accounts' of ANYTHING. PERIOD.

Brian ADMITTED that he uses other journalists' work to inform his player profiles. Those AREN'T his/your opinions or interviews, so why is it OK for him/you to use them & even worse - profit off of them.

Who do you think you guys are trying to fool?

Bob McGinn is just as much of a hack as you are & should not be profiting if he's doing what you say. Which I'm certain he does.

What does Bob McGinn have to with YOUR work anyway? You always bring his name up in arguments to support your case like it's makes you right. FYI it doesn't.

Almost. Almost. It's "parecia ter tanta fluência do idioma inglês antes".
And that "embora" after the "obrigada pelas gentis palavras" e "ir jogar na favela puta" don't make any sense whatsoever. The last part I think you're trying to insinuate that I sell my body for money and live in the slums, but I'm not sure. You do know that "puta merda" is just an expression, right? Give it a rest, silly goose. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Actually, if you really believe the crap you are spewing, I fully endorse the idea that you should invest in a law degree and set up a practice specializing in plagiarism cases. It would have to be very lucrative, because by your hodge podge standards, EVERYTHING IS PLAGIARIZED.

1) I didn't "Bring a foreign language into" any discussion.

2) I'm not a coward, as I worked a job for a number of years that put myself at great risk of conflict and injury with some very unsavory individuals out on the street on a daily basis.

2) I'm also not weak enough to be goaded into a ridiculous "come meet me then" scenario with some random person on the internet who mistakenly believes attempting to intimidate others or in some other way prove he's "tough" and "fearless" is a substitute for using his words to convey his convictions.

Tough guys like you think you have to prove your toughness by challenging people.

People who have had to stare physical conflict with hundreds of tough guys in face for a living know it's a complete waste of time and proves nothing except that you don't have the tools or maturity to find a better solution. It's not a winning proposition for anyone.

You made some really rude, poorly thought out comment on a message board that insulted a number of individual's hard work, based on a very questionable viewpoint of what constitutes plagiarism. You got called out on it. Deal with it, it's the repercussions of your own statements.

Wow, a real streetfight going on in here ....

I doubt BC is putting together a 'draft guide' while sitting & daydreaming on the crapper or as he watches the sunset from his deck ....... I doubt he's waiting for visionary dreams to guide him ......

Opinion is always created from research using facts, figures, empirical data and the opinions of others ..... How can one form an insightful opinion without contemplating the opinions of others? .... Not just in football ..... Anything.

Wouldn't the whole point of putting out their own draft guide be that it's their own work & nobody else's?

I just don't see how anyone could personally put out a draft guide & be OK with using other journalists' work in it. It's plagiarism any which way you try to slice it. It's not your work. PERIOD.

Who in their right mind would want to buy this draft guide to read Russ Lande's take on players(or whoever's info their using)? It's about what THEY saw on tape & heard in THEIR interviews that should separate them from the rest & define their draft guide IMO.

If the 7(?) of them collectively can't put together a profile on a player without using other already established publications information then they shouldn't be doing one in the first place. Let alone charging people for it.

I know you probably think I'm wrong & most likely an ignorant asshole, but I appreciate you not responding like the rest.

Here's an example of "using another author's work": Person X says the following things about Player A: 1, 2, 3. While I find 1 and 2 accurate, I just don't find 3 in point. Perfectly legit.

How exactly would you do a draft guide, or anything for that matter? Consulting what other peope say about the topic your researching is what research is. your own immediate impressions count, but you can only see so much, and others have different and valuable perspectives that yoiu don't have access to otherwise. it's contributing to a larger conversation.

Although I don't agree with your take or definition of 'possible plagiarism' in the creation of a draft guide, unfortunately you are correct when using the term 'rabid sheep' ..... CHTV has never been known for allowing 'derisive disagreement' with blog content without the 'posse' forming ...... The 'posse' usually reverts to misuse of exclamation points, ALL CAPS, profanity & name-calling to 'strike down' the opposition ......

Kinda like the NFL versus the NFLPA .... When emotion overrides intellect, everyone goes home pissed.

I don't know about the "posse." I've personally given Brian grief over his use of headlines on occasion (which BTW IMO can have a strong impact on how a person perceives the article that follows). I never felt like I faced the "wrath of the posse."

No doubt this thread got out of hand.

PFIET - it's just WRONG to throw out accusations without knowing all of the facts. In this case, no one has even read the guide yet, which is kind of an important piece of evidence in a plagiarism case, don't you think? Wait until the guide comes out, then see if you think a wrong has occurred. Please don't argue with me about this.

BC & Co., probably could have responded differently. I'm sure that we can all learn from it after a few beers.

I appreciate all the work that goes into this site and we can all take pride in what CHTV has become, there's nothing else like it in the NFL. This site offers carefully thought-out points of view that I never see elsewhere with regard to football on the whole, and especially with regard to the Packers. This is funny, but Im voting with my dollars. I like Brian's writing and have no doubt this is original material. The last thing an aspiring writer wants to be accused of is plagiarism. Its just bad business. I think the CHTV guys are too smart and honest for that. They get my $5.

I for one appreciate all the work you put into the draft guide and will be purchasing one. Don't feed into the haters!

Hey you stupid, snarky bastard. I got your old job, too bad you are going to be out of a job really soon. Hows that CBA or lack of, treating you? If you have a problem with my teaching methods, kiss my mizzou ass.

Oh, and I'll be ordering my copy just as soon as I get my Cheesehead TV SWAG from winning last year's draft contest!

Will this be available for overseas readers? When I attempt to pre-order it, it only gives me the option of USA for country.

petr - send $5 to the "Buy Us A Beer" function up above. Simply write in "Draft Guide" in the notes section and we will email a draft guide to the email associated with your PayPal account.
