Injury Update at Packers Training Camp: Who's Returning? Who's Dropping Out?

First round draft pick Datone Jones once again rolled his ankle at practice on Wednesday, but Aaron Rodgers and Randall Cobb did return to action.

The biggest news of the day is that first round draft pick Datone Jones dropped out out practice, but on the positive side, both quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Randall Cobb returned.

Here's a look at the walking wounded in Green Bay...

Dropping Out of Practice

Defensive lineman Datone Jones, ankle

Commentary: Jones appears to be a victim of bad luck. After returning to practice on Monday following a sprained ankle suffered in the first preseason game against the Cardinals, Jones rolled the same ankle in practice on Wednesday, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. It's too early to know the severity, but perhaps with this most recent setback, the Packers will decide to rest Jones until the regular season and not risk further injury.

Outside linebacker Andy Mulumba

Commentary: McCarthy used strong phrasing when he said Mulumba's knee "blew up" in meetings last night, but there's a chance he just means there's swelling. The Packers head coach was unsure of Mulumba's availability for Friday's preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Returning to Practice

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, illness

Commentary: McCarthy admitted from the get-go that he expected Rodgers to return to practice on Wednesday after missing Tuesday's session with a head cold. Because the starters typically play the most in the third preseason game, it was good for Rodgers to get back into the swing of things in the Packers' final tuneup for the Seahawks on Friday.

Wide receiver Randall Cobb, biceps

Commentary: Cobb practiced in limited fashion on Wednesday, apparently doing very little, but the fact that he returned at all should indicate that he's at least making progress. McCarthy said Cobb has a chance to play on Friday, something the coaching staff would probably like to see given it will be the best opportunity for Cobb to play with the rest of the first-string offense and get in tune with Rodgers before the regular season begins.

Wide receiver Charles Johnson, knee

Commentary: Johnson hasn't been seen since Day 2 of training camp when he dropped out with a knee injury. That was 27 days ago. It will be extremely difficult for Johnson to make up for lost time, but he'll have just over a week and perhaps two preseason games to prove his worth.

Cornerback Loyce Means, ankle

Commentary: Means only missed one day of practice, so nothing seems to be serious. Friday's game against the Seahawks may be his last chance to make an impression if he's able to extend his stay in Green Bay beyond the first cutdown date to 75 players, for which the deadline is Aug. 27.

Still Out

The following players' status hasn't changed (anticipated return in parentheses):

  • Wide receiver Jordy Nelson, knee (hoping for regular-season opener)
  • Cornerback Tramon Williams, knee (a couple weeks, as of 7/30)
  • Offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga, knee (likely out for entire season)
  • Offensive lineman Derek Sherrod, leg (undetermined, on his "last hurdle," according to McCarthy)
  • Tight end Matthew Mulligan, elbow (undetermined)
  • Safety Sean Richardson, neck (undetermined)
  • Defensive lineman Jerel Worthy, knee (undetermined)
  • Offensive lineman J.C. Tretter, ankle (regular season at the earliest)
  • Cornerback James Nixon, knee, ankle (undetermined)

I hate seeing Jones going down with an ankle injury again. I am thinking he will be dealing with it throughout the season unfortunately... Hopefully its nothing to severe.

Glad to see Charles Johnson back practicing. Although its probably to late to make the 53. I think he will be a PS candidate. I was rooting for him especially after I saw/heard his life story. The only chance I see him making the 53 is if he does something special in these last 2 preseason games.

jones will be fine. if they let him practice a week after the injury it was mild. this isn't one of those 2 month high ankle sprains.

prob just limit him until SF. which is not great but better than the alternative.

"this isn’t one of those 2 month high ankle sprains."

we shall see.
my guess - we'll get him back wk 5 (after the bye).

Yep!! It has to be a curse. I don't know how else you can explain this. How can a team be so snake bitten with their no. 1 draft picks. Ted would be better off trading out of the first round altogether based on the past four or five years. It's ridiculous. If the past is indicative of the future, I expect to see Datone Jones maybe a half a regular season game before he gets put on IR.

Good thing our picks are rarely in the top half of the first round.

You got that right. As long as we keep getting these cheap late rounders, no harm no foul

Did the trainer run out of tape? I'd think they would have that joint locked down. Get him a pair of old school hi-tops.

#1 backup at OLB knee blows up. Hope Moses can pull his head out of his rear. The depth at OLB is brutal. If, I mean when Clay's hammy goes for a month WTF is going to happen to the pass rush? Especially with Jones hurt. Brutal. Nothing has changed on defense so what should a Packers fan think when it comes to San Fran week one. The only hope is that the loss of the top 2 WRs in San Fran really limits Kap's game. But then again he can just run... Damn it!

Wow. First Perry, a number one we've gotten zero production from. A number 2 Worthy that we will get zero production from and now our super hero number 1 isn't tough enough to withstand practice?? So much for TT and his great draft picks.

PS, I still say a lot of our injuries are from those late round picks no one else selected due to those guys being injury prone and or soft in college.
