Gut Reaction: Packers get out-coached and out-played

Aaron gives his gut reactions from the Packers 34-20 loss to the Detroit Lions.

  • So that's what a physical, well-coached team looks like.
  • Dan Campbell absolutely owns Matt LaFleur right now.
  • I have no idea how you come into that game thinking "We're going to throw it early and often"
  • Joe Barry is happy to let teams march.
  • Quay Walker played a really good game before making an inexcusable mistake.
  • Why are you even trying to block that kick. by the way? You stopped them. Take the win.
  • Rich Bisaccia got promoted this offseason and the special teams got worse.
  • There's no way Sean Rhyan is a worse option than Royce Newman.
  • I'm surprised they didn't pull Walker for Yosh at some point.
  • Romeo Doubs was a bright spot. I love this kid.
  • The first down throw to Doubs behind the line of scrimmage that lost them all that yardage absolutely killed them. They didn't execute, but I hated that play call given the position they were in having just gotten the ball back.
  • Rest up, burn the tape. There's not much to be learned from getting punched in the mouth other than you need to be tougher.
  • The Packers sitting at 2-2 is a minor miracle given how horrible they've looked at the start of the last two games.
  • Going to be interesting to see what changes in Vegas.
  • Lotta season left.
  • Go Pack.

How inspiring is MLF when he time and time again looks like a lost puppy on the sidelines...like he's gonna cry...I know my wish that he would be fired wont come true for a year or two but im confident that it will one day...he dont have it as a head coach...plus his play calling sucks...I guess it wasn't all whipping boy AR...

The Atlanta game finally exposed Barry (repeated here), but this game exposed the empty shell that is LaFleur. Out motivated, out coached, in addition to Barry, carrying another bunch of BS in the form of Myers until reality hits home. We could have had Nijman out there and a C who can block. Butkus/Stenovich are disasters as much as Barry. A succession of refusals to face the obvious all exposed.

LaFleur is an OC at best, and a poor one tonight. It’s time to just stand up and acknowledge that we don’t get better with him. If Murphy won’t move in that, let him feel at least the derision. His HC has no clothes. His HC cost Rodgers a Super Bowl, not the other way around. Let’s not let him ruin Love and the others.

LaFleur has to go. This team will bumble along till he does. He had his chances, he’s blown through every warning sign. It’s fine. It’s just time. Love, despite all kinds of adversity took some steps tonight, which only makes it more frustrating.

I think it's more of an OL situation at this point, but he definitely could have gotten the two best players that have been out more easy shots early. Some plays might not be game breakers but they build confidence. Watson on a Jet sweep or some easy pitch and catch tosses to Jones.

To me you're right in the sense that keeping Barry was inexcusable to me. If you are going to spend that much draft capital on defense make it a focal point by hiring somebody that attacks offenses instead of worrying about giving up the big play. I'm sure part of that is worrying about plays deep down the middle that is a weakness. I watched the '85 Bears, they couldn't cover outside of they couldn't get home but they pretty much always got home. If 4 isn't getting there send 5 and if 5 isn't getting there get exotic and send a corner or safety. Also need to simplify Walker's role to see ball get ball. Half the time he's out of position but I think it's still a mental thing rather than a physical thing. He can cover most RBs so just green dog him 85% of the time. If the RB is staying into block your at 6 on 4 anyway and if he isn't Walker can cover most of them.

I'm with you. I'll be the first name on the petition if it helps. Seemingly every important game there is some scramble drill as far as the line up. OL is never the same injuries or not And lately the RB Situaon is a joke. Jones hurt, play only Dillon. Still hurt Call up Wilson. And Taylor , don't play them. Jones back, Don't run at all for a half . And then as a token effort. WTF .

He's the one that's embarrassing!

I wouldn't call his play calling awesome. The bigger problem is his lineups and who attempts to execute the same play. But most of all who he uses consistently or sporadically. Rarely does it makes sense with what's going on mid game.

Didt see game but read the plays and watched the field movements on espn. Not a LeFleur guy but wonder if another hc could much better with the tools on hand.
I do beleive he knows who signs his checks and is hesitant to pull gutts high picks. ex. Dillon is useless but he gets the playing time. We have better in number three and 4.
I stii say this is a six win team maybe 7 but thats it.
lets hope mgmt doesn't blow it off as youthful mistakes and keep these coaches as in everthing is cool.

OK, let’s imagine: I see the Packer OL under Dan Campbell getting overwhelmed, no run game due to inadequate blocking, lots of three and outs leading to a tired defense that is unable to penetrate the Loins OL even when fresh. Goff still has lots of time to throw and plenty of targets. Thanks to superior line play the Loins can run at will on the Packer D. And Quay Walker is still a dumbass. Some impressive glowers and tuff guy speeches impress fans. Score: 34-20 Loins.

I love your comment that Quay Walker is still a dumbass. Four years of playing in college, countless hours of being coached, learning your position, and you climb your linebacker's back to block a field goal. He is the poster boy for the typical Packer player. They are young but don't let that mask their lack of intelligence and lack of discipline. You just can't fix stupid.

Even in an ugly loss like last night, you can still sense how much talent this squad has and how dangerous they’ll be if they can ever put it all together.

Will they ever be able to? MLF is a good coach in many respects, but it’s now more than fair to question if he can ever instill the mentality and toughness this team really needs. So many teams in this league seem to get more from less.

We didn’t even try to get the run going. We came out long passing …. Campbell even noted that after the game and says how the early attempts to set up the long ball played into their hands. I admit, we probably weren’t going to be successful running, but try it surely?

But LH said he's a starter and stays healthy? I think they should have given him snaps at G. He's certainly better at blocking on the line than reach blocks.

Walker is not a plus in the run game. I wonder with the Bakhtiari news if switching Tom to LT and Nijman to RT is in the cards. Myers stays at C but at least there might be more shots for long runners.

We need someone at C. Tom is the only candidate who might help in the center. I’d be looking to try Jones and Myers out too. We can’t get better without trying them, we can’t get too much worse in protection and a run game might well offset that.

One certain thing Love learned from Rodgers is to hold onto the ball long enough so you can get sacked and kill any possible drive rather than just throwing the ball away.

And, to add to that thought, bad play callng/schemes can ruin players careers for years.

These coaches have ZERO concept of putting a player - with unique talents - in a position to be successful. This particularly applies to Joe Dingle Berry with 11 first draft picks! Any other team would never have hired him in the first place!

Keep trying to figure it out Joe.

I guess Aaron Jones should have sat out,as MLF seemed to have no use for him.
Where is the Top 5 Defense, another 200+ yard game.
Love had some slow reactions. Luckily, the Game Clock guy dozed off at the end of the 3rd quarter and saved a play.
The Lions are biting kneecaps, and it isn't a joke anymore.
The faith that I thought had grown was tossed into the crapper this week.
Love played a shit game, though excuses will be bountiful.

Thought he was better at that on Longer throws tonight despite everything. The throw to Reed comes to mind particularly.

No QB is going to look good behind a line that overwhelmed. Rodgers didn’t the few times that happened to him and nor did Favre. Love did much better than he could have done with that line performance and no run game at all. So no, I actually think Love, despite anything, showed more growth. Other than Love, I agree with Taryn.

You would think that with hamstring concerns the last thing you would want to do is warm up, stop, play and stop ......

I kept asking myself all game is MLF just trying to stretch them out. Jones and Watson. Taking them for a quick drive, so they could cool down and get hurt once again.

I really do not think he has any plan or real strategies to offer. He can barely manage the team. Well, at least have talent. Easier to get rid of 2 or 3 coaches.

I am still stoked being a Packer fan. I like the players on this team and they will only grow from this and get better.

I hope the coaches do the same...what surprised me the most is the special teams miscues and the slow starts in the first half recently. I wasn't able to watch the game so I couldn't rely on anything I saw personally.

Injuries suck but all teams experience them and have to persevere. This will all play out and I am excited that Love is our QB.

I am happy that Gutey has a vision and is able to construct a team that will bring prominence back to Titletown, at some point.

"I hope the coaches do the same..."

They had 4 years to show the growth! There is no growth, better to say it looks like they regressed. I was writing here from 2020 that MLF is not HC. He is only OC, and it looks like not quite good one.

Do NOT expect any changes in the coaching staff. Mark, we are not idiots, Murphy will never admit that he made mistake by hiring MLF and replace him. And MLF will not fire Joe Barry! After all, MLF said that retaining Joe Barry he is looking for continuity and that is what he got. Continuity of sh*t falling down from the sky.

I'm not in US and because of that I can not organize petition to kick out Joe Barry! But someone from Wisonsin can do that. Count that I will vote for!

I do not know, but bitching about 2 DL plus 2 OLB get another low on the snap 3rd ror 20! There was just 2 DL, both on the same side and 1 ILB on the other side of the field. What was that?

1st thing first. You want confidence from secondary in games? Well, JB schemes on secondary says them that there is no confidence that they will be able to do their job. So he scheme says: You are not good enough to perform high level of coverage in regular man on man coverage! But, truth is that JB does not know how to teach D to play zone.

It is ridiculous that game after game we see same stupidities and we saw, even myself with restricted football knoweldge how unadequate is Joe Barry and his play calling.

What is more salt on the wound is how pretending to be HC did not do nothing about that.

And that is why I believe Mark, we are not idiots, Murphy should go together with MLF & Joe Barry and to return back to succesful foortball operation in Packers organization, established by Bob Haland and Ron Wolf.

But I'm talking in vain...

Totally agree with so many comments, Aaron, except one! Don't burn the tape! In fact, keep playing it over and over again for the players...especially the lack of effort at times. It's a young team and they have to learn. LaFleur and Barry have to take a lot of blame too. As I stated previously, it's insane to believe you will have linebackers bite hard on play action when you do not run the ball....hence the interception. That route has to be ran deeper in that situation, otherwise. Also there was a ton of ONE-man short routes. Jordan didn't have a chance when that person was covered. MLF you need to do your part too!

Last, the Lions really game-taped Douglas, taking advantage of his aggression. Douglas played hard though and I would not want to take away that aggressive style...just be smart.

Dan Campbell didn't play.
The comparison in Qbs is obvious.
And so is the Trench.
You were looking for a comeback.
And that wasn't going to happen.
The Lions own the packers.
And until you get rid of Gutey.
The best you can hope for is a play-off birth.
So blame MLF and Barry all you want.
He drafted for scheme instead of greatness.
The 3-4-4 is a dinosaur.
The only way you beat a top QB now.
Is playing the 4 -2- 5.
The only way you win the trench is with Tackles.

We need to try Rhyan and Caleb Jones. If we can improve the run game, that might help protection in and of itself. In any case, protection couldn’t get much worse in the middle.

I would tell Stenovich that his line will be, if Healthy, Nijman, Runyon, Tom, Myers, Jones. It’s not that I don’t like Walker, I do, but I want him to improve his run game while we improve ours. We can not continue to ignore the ability to run block if we can do so without noticeable decline in protection.

The Packers, from the front office to the coaches to the players, are what they are (mediocre), and all the hope and happy thoughts won’t change that. Last time we saw the fun side of rebuilding when it came up roses. This time we saw the trying side of rebuilding with a weak offensive line that was embarrassed.

I'm sure blame can be assessed to the coaching staff as usual, but the Packers are lacking physicality and stoutness on both sides of the trenches. All the athleticism doesn't really mean much when you can't run or stop it.

Lions: 43 carries, 211 yards; Packers: 12 carries, 27 yards. TOP: Won by Lions 38-22. Rushing first downs: Lions 13, Packers 2.... Obviously not a winning formula here.

I'm disappointed by the loss, but the truth is that Detroit is further ahead of us in their rebuilding efforts and right now they're a better team with a better coaching staff and a more experienced QB.

The problem is experience in part, but mainly the difference in coaching from top to bottom. Campbell has out coached LaFleur every time, tactically, motivationally … every way and that is true down through all phases. We aren’t going to win with that kind of coaching deficit. Until we stop hiding from that, history will just be repeating.

The problem is that MLF retained his incompetent DC. We are seeing the same problems as last year...can't stop the run and DB's playing 8 yard off the LOS in a his prevent a win game plan. He needed to be fired last year and because MLF didn't, my hope is he and his coaching staff will all be gone after the season.

Debacle, disaster whatever you want to call it. Out coached and out played again. Physically lost the LOS on both sides of the ball.

It was good to see the Packers come out with some fight left after halftime and after they had been pulverized in the first half. However the backwards pass and another stupid penalty by Walker killed any chances for a late rally by the Packers.

Love, Rodgers, Montana, Unitas or any QB could not have been effective behind the Packers OL the way they played tonight. They were totally manhandled again. Where was the run game? Was there even a game plan?

A terrible job of preparation by the coaching staff. I realize it was a short week but the Lions were clearly ready to play.

The Packers just were not ready for prime time. That’s part of having a young team and numerous injuries.

Burn the tape enjoy the mini bye and move on. MLF has tons of work to do. The Packers were badly exposed on both sides of the ball. STs had their moments also. Why is Nixon returning kicks from 5+ yards deep in the end zone??? What was Reed thinking on that punt return? WTF??? Where’s Bisaccia?

Tough night. Moving on from here but to where or what? At least we have the Titletown District. Thanks, Since ‘61

We move on to nowhere until we accept that the same problems are now surfacing that we’ve seen throughout the LaFleur Era despite a new QB and a very different roster. The season was set up to see who was the problem. It’s quite clearly the coaches. The degree of similarity rules out coincidence.

LaFleur was in fact the guy who ensured we never got back to the Super Bowl. He’s the guy who held us back, himself and through his hires. We can’t let that continue. This needs to be his last lap or we will simply waste the talent we’ve assembled. The jury came in tonight and the verdict was damning.

We will beat bad teams and teams we match up well with. That’s it, but it’s enough for players to grow this year, as long as we lift the dead weight in the off season.

"Out-coached" - Sure seems like it.
+
"Barry is happy to let teams march" - So is MLF.
+
"special teams got worse" - Reed giving his Amari Rodgers impression. Who is in charge?
+
"no way Sean Rhyan is worse" - But he was sitting the pine.
+
"surprised they didn't pull Walker" - Really? Do you expect in-game adjustments?
= See a pattern? Time for a new coaching staff? We have too much talent to be playing so poorly. Yes, we are young, but that poorly? Come on!!!

It's amazing that after all this time, all of the first round defensive draft picks, we still can't stop the run. This team is undisciplined and can do little right at this moment.

The special teams have been more harm than good this season as there is a penalty on every other kick/punt return and Nixon, while I appreciate his tenacity, is doing this team no favors with his returns. He's cost the team well over 100 yards of field position this season and is constantly taking 6-9 yards deep and ending up short of the 25 instead of just taking the touchback. The one bright spot is Carlson, who has been absolutely lights out through 4 games.

The passing game is extremely erratic and it's either firing on all cylinders or it's nothing but incomplete passes for entire quarters on end. Love is throwing contested balls on almost every pass attempts early in games and has the most defended passes in the NFL by far. He misses open wide open guys and when they're not open, they can't make the contested catches like other teams seem to do to us on a weekly basis. The offensive line has been very good pass blocking for the most part but has been horrendous in the run blocking aspect for the entire season. Today, the dam finally broke. Love was under constant pressure and Lefleur couldn't figure out how to stop it until the game was 20 points out of reach. Not to mention they didn't even attempt to TRY running the ball on the first two drives and they got themselves in a hole really quick because of it. This team NEEDS to stay ahead of the chains because it seems as if any play goes backwards, it spells doom for the offense. I thought that was going to come to an end when Rodgers left, but I guess I was wrong.

Don't even get me started on the defense. I get it, it's hard to tackle often and it's even more difficult when your offense doesn't perform well. BUT, every single year we dump loads of money and draft picks into the defense and there are never any results. Pass rush, better than last year and having Gary back is a huge boost, but it's nowhere near where it should be.
I also get that the guys are young and there are going to be growing pains, but giving up 40+ carries and 200+ yards on the ground every week is a great recipe for a losing record. Walker almost tied the NFL record for tackles in a single game today for crying out loud. The amount of missed tackles as a whole is absolutely atrocious as well, as every single play it looks like it will be a stop for a minimal gain, only to watch the RB slide through a hole and get 6 yards before he's touched.

There are a lot of things to look forward to, but this team has a lot of growing to do before they are actually contenders.

Did you not notice that Doofus is at LG and Useless is still the C? And there is no Bahk at LT. So what did you expect against the hungry Lions?

Oh, I know. The interior of the line is the worst it's been in the last 30 years. Royce Newman is absolutely God awful and I don't know what the coaches see in him. Runyan is a good pass blocker but even he got manhandled on a play-by-play basis and his run blocking is terrible. Myers does one thing well and that's snap the ball. I think the best lineup for this team, unfortunately, is (from left to right) Walker, Rhyan, Tom, Runyan and Nijman. Maybe flip Nijman and Walker depending on how well Walker can play RT. Something has got to change. The weak link of the o-line is the entire interior and that's a big reason why we are struggling in the run game. This is a finesse team built to protect the passer and stop the pass. Not a great recipe with all rookie receivers (essentially) and two backs named Jones and Dillon.

Exposed! - Like I said, the OLine isn't near what everyone thought it was. Bakh was never going to play much. 2+ years people. Now...Probably last time as a GBP. Great career, but done. I also understand Jenkins was disappointing loss that effects the whole line, but ... The rest, average at best. Time to stop expecting the Packers to develop 4th+ rounders to play above expected. Offensive coaches, I believe, have known this, but flat out refuse to draft better or try better options at positions. It's either arrogance or ignorance. Next year has to be high round draft choices for Oline and running game scheme changes. The obviousness of this is truly astounding.

Stop the Barry excuses. D wasn't gassed by the 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th Defensive series. I don't care what the O did. No way the Defensive struggles are on the Offense not getting off the field that early. Why would they not be in shape by now? Get real apologists. Terrible positional football. Real Defenses don't get run over like that continually from the get go. Try your best to effort at statistical gymnastics. Outside the 1st series...dominated.

Watson and Jones were not full strength. This was pretty obvious from the start. Re-watch. Watson wasn't even running, but jogging routes at the beginning. Packers were not able to stretch the field at the start. Although, It wouldn't really even have mattered. The Oline can't pass block a better pass rush or run block anyone. Again, don't mistake this for excusing the Defense. Truly, apologists' apologies fall on deaf ears.

Love was bad. Love was sometimes good, but after Lions went prevent. First year, duh. I put more blame on MLF not getting him outside of a continual collapsing pocket to make some plays on his own. Sometimes scramble plays can create a defeatist attitude on a defense. Let him try.

Don't care about Walker's penalty. I don't care if he knew the rule or not. It was too late. He was about the only defensive player still trying his best all game. He tried to bring intensity all game. Good on him.

Anders...a lone light that was thought to be a probable game loser. So far, a bright spot.

Packers got 4 games that are winnable. LV, Denver, Vikings, and Rams. They could still be 6-2 by then. All is not lost. Still lot of season left.

Such a disappointing effort by the D-Line. It’s big trouble when you can’t stop the run.
I was initially enthused when we hired MLF, but for more than a year, I believed he’s an empty suit. He gave tough guy interview with the sideline reporter after halftime, but he’s not a Billy-Bad-A$$ and it came across as artificial.
I don’t know whether to hug or kick Love.
Dillon, Newman, and Barry—put them on a raft in the Pacific Ocean with a block government cheese.
Better days are coming—I think?
Go Packers!!!

I’m normally very unwilling to change coaches mid season. There are few options out there. However, there are times that I think that the downside is offset by removal of a source of the problems. That may be the case with Barry. He just doesn’t use his players or plays well or adapt to opponents. I’d put a call In to Leonard and ask him to come and help out even if just as a consultant to an interim promoted younger coach on the team.

When David Montgomery outrushes Aaron Jones, you know we have the wrong gameplan.

The empty backfield alignment is best used on short-yardage situations because the ball has to come out quickly (reduced QB protection). So, why do we go empty backfield on 3rd-and-long so often? I would like to think MLF has a better football mind than me.

Trading for Jonathan Taylor would be a waste of his talents; even he couldn't do much on 5 touches per game.

Would any Packers beat writer have the guts to ask MLF why, with 8 first round picks on defense, he chooses to play conservative defensive?

However, I will also add that this is what the youngest roster in the NFL with a first year starter at QB and 2 pro bowl offensive linemen out looks like; it's not pretty, but it's also not hopeless.

Its gonna be a long, up and down season folks....

Its a young team with a pretty much a total rebuild on offense. As for defense.... Ford is a 1st time starter, Nixon as well. Nobody on the line has starting experience beside Kenny C. Gary is still on a snap count, Campbell and Alexander out. Lots of inexperience there too.

Also fuck the boo birds at Lambeau....entitled, whiny band wagon riding fucks...4 weeks into a rebuild with the youngest team in the NFL and they are pissed off that we arent dominating the NFL...Do not act like fair weather Vikings fans...we gotta have patience....

So— a team is a reflection of their coach to some extent. Dan Campbell is a tough SOB. LeFleur is an eyebrow groomer.
Just saying.

This team will not be any better until we have 11 first rounders on defense taking the field at the same time. 2028 should be the mark for Barry to finally get the talent he needs to produce a top 25 defense.

Was at a local packers bar. Holy hell, there are a lot of Lions fans all of a sudden. I guess climate change brought the end of their hibernation.

the Lions were so well prepared that they might as well have been in our huddle. they knew MLFs play sheet and script better than the Packers did. Again we were not ready to play. it took a half to wake up a bit this time, three quarters the game before that. and the person who posted how we can still be playing a 3-4 D or often a 2-5 D is beyond me. the only thing to like is that we might have a very good receiving corps, best in ages.

I noticed the same thing. It seemed the Lions defense knew the play call as soon the Packers broke the huddle.

There was three games of tape on the MLF offense with Love as the starting QB. No doubt the Lions knew what to look for and what to key on better than the Saints.

Some of the performance Thursday was due to inexperience. But…BUT…there remains questionable play calling on offense, poor game planning on defense, no apparent willingness to make adjustments during a game on both sides of the ball and regression in ST performance. All of this points to lack of preparation. Both players and coaches are responsible for preparation. Players prepare themselves but coaches prepare the team. Thursday night, I saw a poorly prepared Packers team.

Calm down everyone.....
There not going to fire Lafleur mid season
There not going to fire Gute mid season
Packers are in the second yr of rebuild ( high draft picks )
Lions are in there 4th year of rebuild year ( top ten draft ) picks
Love is still the future they need to protect him
They will let DC Barry go at the end of year
Offence line will be priority of next draft
The Jets 2nd round pick is rising in the draft
Packers need a good showing vs the Raiders
They still have a favorable schedule
Could finnish above 500
All is not lost

Lions will fold somewhere along the line. Just a matter of time. Last night was their Super Bowl. The Packers and very young and inconsistent. Get used to it, that is what happens with a new team and remember we still have some significant injuries and parts missing due to that. The Packers as they get healthier will win more games. Yup they looked like Jr College team last night!

Wishing And Hoping was a #1 Song by Dusty Springfield in 1964 and has been the Theme Song for the Green Bay Packers Defense since LaFluer and Gutenkunst arrived. Hard to believe per the last paragraph that it took 4 years for the Coach & GM to see reality.

Since LaFleur became head coach, do you know how many teams have a defensive rush EPA per snap above zero? Thirty-one. The one team that doesn’t? The Packers. Dead last in run defense effectiveness since LaFleur became head coach, and dead last since general manager Brian Gutekunst officially became GM in 2018. “We’re going to have to do something different,” LaFleur said Thursday night when told the Packers have allowed more than 200 rushing yards in both losses this season. “Because it’s insane to do the same things over and over again and expect a different result.”

Intensity...Intensity... Intensity
Dan Campbell, that is what he coaches since starting in 2021
He knew he lacked talent but demanded extreme effort ( intensity )
As he added talent the new players bought into the ( intensity of there style )
Detroit has drafted and added players who match Campbells extreme only style
Did you notice the intensity level of play by Aldan Hutchinson, and others
Did GB match there intensity Thurs? Or play with that kind of intensity
NOT EVEN CLOSE
Intensity if not from coaches must come from veteran players
Young unconfident players are more worried about assignments
Rather than gearing up for violent competition
Lack of extreme intensity at the beginning of game means
Poor performance, mental mistakes, lack of aggression
Somehow Confident Intensity coming through veteran leadership must show up
Especially at the beginning of the games

Hey!
Where's the Good, the Bad and the Ugly?
The Good=2nd half comeback. You just can't dig a whole that deep and expect to climb out
The Bad=another bad half. Stat: They had 9 first downs when we had nine yards.
The Ugly=An O-line that went from touted to taunted in a month. Run game gone; pass blocking now totally unpredictable. Effect on Love devastating. More pressure=more sacks=more errant throws=more picks=you-know-what.
