Eddie Lacy to the Seahawks; Packers lose star Running back After Four Years
It took a few days, but the decision has officially become clear for Packers running back Eddie Lacy.
Now, ex-Packers running back, Lacy agreed to terms with the Seahawks early Tuesday morning. His agent's management firm SportsTrust Advisors announced the news on Twitter.
NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport tweeted moments later that the deal for Lacy is for one year, worth up to $5.5 million with $3 million guaranteed. The Packers had their hands tied with the cost, and it was unlikely general manager Ted Thompson would dip into the bank for Lacy at the aforementioned cost. Especially when Lacy is coming off a season in which he missed 11 games due to an ankle injury that soon required surgery.
Lacy, drafted by the Packers in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, kick-started his career in Green Bay with back-to-back 1,100-plus-yard campaigns, tallying 20 combined touchdowns in those first two years.
He was slowed down in 2015 due to health concerns and at the conclusion of the season, head coach Mike McCarthy made it clear to Lacy that he expected him to work himself into better shape over the offseason program. That's precisely what Lacy did, engineering a daily routine with P90X creator Tony Horton, who helped Lacy lose over 20 pounds.
As a result, Lacy was off to the best start of his career in 2016, averaging 5.1 yards per carry through the first six games - his best since his rookie year. He suffered an ankle injury but attempted to play through it in a week six game against the Dallas Cowboys which presumably made it worse. It ultimately led to Lacy being placed on injured reserve, consequently ending his season.
Lacy hit the market with heavy interest from teams, but two, in particular were the Vikings and Seahawks. Lacy spent the past weekend visiting both teams, concluding with a trip to Green Bay which was expected to be solely for a health check-up of his ankle. His career in Green Bay ends with 788 rushes, amassing over 3,445 yards and 23 touchdowns. He brings the same explosive running style to the Seahawks that Marshawn Lynch once did, and gives them arguably the most powerful runner since the Lynch days.
The only running backs under contract right now are Ty Montgomery and Don Jackson, who was offered his exclusive rights tender to remain with the team despite missing most of the season transitioning between the practice squad and a hand injury.

This hurts worse because he's going to Seattle. I hate Seattle. I like Lacy -- the dude and the player. Even in his "fat" season he averaged 4.1 a carry. Loved watching him run over people.

The only place where they'll miss him is in protection. He was getting better. A rookie will have to work hard to be serviceable there.

I didn't get you sometimes.... Seahawks were one of the worst O-lines last year so I'm sure that was it.... he also would have a lot of 2 tight ends sets to run out of moving forward

Starks beat him out. MM disciplined him twice. (Weight & Curfew) Coming off ankle surgury. Weighs 260+ now? something I heard. Seahawks just signed Joeckel G-T. === Lang and sitton were All-pros. The new guys will block for A-Rod in pass protection first. running is secondary. And seattle has some good TEs that don't have to learn first. I really don't think he wanted to be a packer. Maybe seattle signed him to be a guard. (just joking there.)

It's ok, Montgomery will do fine. I'd rather have the guy with the passion and desire to be a number 1 than a guy who fell into it. Now ima walk up the road to Stillmank and have a cold one as soon as they open the tap room.

Boy, it hurts a bit that it's the Sea-hags. I hate those guys. Anybody else outside the division I could of lived with. I'll bet he doesn't stay healthy behind that O-line. Just goes to show you, the Packers didn't want him back given the price. It's not totally outlandish of a price tag, although it's more than what I would have given. If there was any real interest or desire, the Packers would have brought him back for that price, IMO. Too much weight, too many injuries.

I thought Michael looked real explosive in his limited carries. Give him a training camp to learn the offense, and with Montgomery, RB will not be this teams biggest problem. People are getting distracted with the real problem - DEFENSE! We need 3 quality starters. THREE.

Agreed!! The league has changed, some time ago. I'm sure most will not agree, but I personally think we need to try a different approach. I'm a fan of MM. I think he is a Great Coach. The only place I take issue with His or GB's thinking, is "Having A Balanced Attack". Don't get me wrong. I want to have a Great Running Back or 2 or 3, but the fact is, that for whatever reason, It Hasn't gotten us to the Promise Land. We've gone as far as we've gone on the arm of AR.
I've been on a football field. I know the importance of being balanced. My Opinion is, it's time to become a mostly Pass Orientated team with DEFENCE. This is a passing league, & we have the QB. Why take the ball out of his hands. We Win with him. We lose without him, so let's go all the way with him. He will not be here forever. Please Mortgage The Farm, & give AR a DEFENSE, for the time he has left. I don't give a Damn about Eddie Lacy. IMO, he's already been REPLACED.
I may not be around 10 years from now, but many of you will. The one thing you don't want to look back & say is "Why Didn't We Give AR a DEFENSE. We tried it TT & Capers way for how many years? IT'S NOT WORKING!!
Just like an Old Girlfriend, sometimes like it or not, you have to forget about how things were in the past, & try something New. I believe we need to become a Pass Orientated team with Defense. This offense will do just fine. We need a Tough Defense. THAT COSTS MONEY. Just my opinion.

Lacy actually had two great seasons with us, though.
The biggest difference is health and conditioning. Lacy let himself go, and I doubt that ankle holds up long-term unless he loses a lot of weight and keeps it off.
Not bringing him back makes a lot of sense. No way was he worth more than 3-4Mil/year to us, given he had two bad years already.

Start off by saying welcome Davon House, nice sign depending on the price.
I was 50-50 on Lacy, since he's gone I'll spin this positively.
I would have offered him no more than 4M with maybe 1 guaranteed, 3M is a bit much. Packers don't play Seattle in the regular season I believe. If we play Seattle in the postseason, I'm not too confident he will have lasted. He won't be breaking anyone's ankles but his own.
I trust Aaron Rip to take over Lacys role as the bruiser and I expect him to stay healthy. May not produce the same way but he's an option. I also expect a rookie like James Conner from the draft. A guy like Samaje Perine or Gallman may be an option, I'm not sure it's necessary but I'm open to it depending how the draft plays out.

I think we address RB in the draft as per reports. House signing gives us some flexibility with where we take a CB and hopefully we can get a pass rusher to give our DBs some help.
Lacy in Seattle stinks. At least when we play the Hawks you'd think our D would be prepared for him.

I was hoping to see Lacy as a Packer. It's irksome that he's a Seahawk now. It stinks even more because you all know with our luck recently concerning departed free agents that he's going to rush for two thousand yards this year. Or maybe break his ankle again...

I don't know about that...most FAs that leave GB don't do much. Beyond Hayward last season, there aren't many post-Packers success stories.

When Rodgers missed half the season Lacy won us that division title. Teams knew we HAD to run, loaded the box, and still could not stop him. This hurts bad, and as already mentioned, to the fucking SEAHAWKS of all places??!! But dur hur we signed 2 tight ends so its okay! It is going to make it so much worse when he runs allover our JV defense that we have done nothing to improve. I will be sick over this until or unless we make an actual splash in free agency to improve this defense. Make a fucking trade, spend some money, do SOMETHING.

That was several season ago and a totally different Eddie Lacy. I like Lacy, but it's 50-50 he even has an impact next year. It's not surprising we didn't sign him. I think there is a RB in the draft that Ted really likes. Who that is, I have no idea.

We are all in the same boat when it comes to making improvements to the team and I know none of you need me voicing my frustrations on here, trust me I know and I apologize. However the Patriots are coming off of ANOTHER Super Bowl, but you would never be able to tell by the absolute BLOCKBUSTER additions they made already this offseason. I dont get the logic. Lang and Tretter got paid more than I would have wanted us to fork out and thats fine. Lacy I really wanted back despite the weight issues head over to youtube and watch his highlights in case you forgot what he was capable of. Maybe he really did not want to come back, maybe the offense is changing with the addition of 2 tight ends that will most certainly be matchup problems, ok great. I wanted House back and it happened, ok great. I wanted him back for his familiarity of our system and the fact that he is a veteran who has made plays in the past. I am in no way shape or form saying that he is a difference maker, he is just the veteran depth that we desperately needed and I am happy about that. But we CANNOT go through free agency without adding a SIGNIFICANT piece on defense now and I am terrified that is where we are headed. OLB,ILB, another CB, any type of pass rusher whatsoever.

I'm bummed about this. Resigning Lacy was the right move if the price didn't get out of control. Seattle was a little high, but affordable.
Now we need to look at RBs in the draft as well as pass rusher and CB. Oh, and probably a developmental interior OL too... :(

I'm with you Bearmeat, Lacys deal was affordable and I'd have liked to see him back. I was really looking forward to a "Thunder & Lighting" type backfield with Lacy & Monty, now we need some new Thunder.
It's getting hard to say if the Packers are moving forward or not. Hopefully House was a good signing and will help the CB situation. But we still need to draft a CB and OLB high and O-Line and RB are really areas of need now too.

OK, sorry to see Lacy go, but let's look at some numbers:
267 pounds is what Lacy weighs now.
Was injured last year and won't be healthy for some/most off-season workouts. (Weight won't come off by itself.)
3M guarantee and 5M/year for 1 year deal.
With TT looking at all that what else could he do but say Bye-Bye.

At 267-270 I would not sign Lacy. I agree that the Pack needed to move on. Very happy that Davon House is back. He will add stability to the position. It would be nice to see the Packers add a LB in FA.

According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Lacy weighed 267 pounds on his free agent visits. Lacy can't push himself away from the dinner table. Jamal Charles is still out there but if that's too rich for TT then he needs to draft a RB.

We don't even know what level of activity he's able to do at this point. Sure, he should have changed his caloric intake significantly when he wasn't able to condition, but some of that will come off quickly when he starts running/swimming or whatever they do to start strengthening his lower body.

Lacy is not going to lose 25-30 pounds fast. He just won't. He'll play at 250-255 guaranteed. To think he's only heavy because of his injury is a bit delusional. There's many things he could be doing to condition himself. He just won't because he isn't motivated.

I love Lacy and I wanted him to succeed, but unless he was eating purposely to get out of GB, I don't see where he will ever have the motivation to lose the 30 pounds it would take to have him be a top five RB in the NFL. So much wasted ability due to lack of motivation. It's common in pro sports, guys without the discipline to reach their full potential. I will be very interested to see how this plays out in Seattle. I suspect it will be close to a carbon copy of his time GB, because they will try to give him more carries over there and he won't hold up.

This doesn't bother me at all because Ty is a beast who has shown he'll do anything to get on the field. Packers definitely need another RB because we all saw what happened when you go into a season with two RB's, but Ty being our #1 is perfect.

for all people wanting Lacy to have taken a 3M deal, that's what the packers signed Starks for 2 years ago (6M over 2 years IIRC), and Lacy has always been better and more productive than Starks. I would've thought 4-5M would be the range, i'm guessing the packers weren't that far off from what he got.

RBs have very short shelf lives. If I'm Lacy, I wouldn't have wanted to limit my earning power on a two-year, low-pay deal. Like Cook, this is likely the best situation for him: reps on a good team, good money, and a chance to go back on the market next winter.

What about Christine Michael?! He was just getting familiar with the system and was looking better each game. I think that him alongside Montgomery could do just fine and an addition in a mid round draft pick could really help. Lacy would have been nice to keep for a 1 or 2 year deal but im not that disapointed.

Here are the "blockbuster" RB deals from last year's free agency:
Doug Martin (5 yrs, 37.5M with 15M guaranteed) played in 8 games, ran for 421 yards at 2.9 per carry with 3 TDs. He had a whopping 14 receptions for 134 yards, 0 TDs.
Lamar Miller (4 yrs, 26M with 14M guaranteed) played in 14 games, ran for 1073 yards at 4.0 per carry with 5 TDs. He had 188 yards receiving, and 1 TD.
Chris Ivory (5 yrs, 32M with 10M guaranteed) played in 11 games, ran for 439 yards at 3.8 per carry with more fumbles (5) than TDs (3). He caught passes for 186 yards, 0 TDs.
As things stand right now, these three dudes will be the 4th, 5th and 6th highest paid RBs in the league in 2017. Maybe Miller's modest production keeps his contract from being a flat-out, cap destroying humiliation, but it surely isn't good, and the other two are complete disasters.
Never pay running backs big money. Especially fat ones who are addicted to maple syrup.

I love me some BIG EDDIE however; he's too fat, undisciplined and has bad ankles. 5.5 million was way too much, the Pack can draft one or two and get younger, fresher legs with more upside. Maybe they'll draft this kid out of Stanford and we can have an all Stanford running back tandem.
I like the House move, we needed some help at CB, they will still have to draft one high.
I also liked the re-signing of Jayrone Elliott, he is an excellent Special Teams guy, is young and can rush the QB, he just needs a chance.

My only disappointment with the loss of Lacy is that he was a 2nd round pick. If we are a draft and develop team then we need to get 2 contract value for these high round picks. Getting nothing out of Lacy, Worthy, Neal, Jones and the other high rounders hurts.
As for Lacy, he doesn't show the commitment to taking care of himself to endure a full season of pounding. Ted probably didn't want to gamble 5.5/3 million on a guy that hasn't shown the discipline to train and prepare like a true pro. Get more defense and pick up a RB in the draft. Rodgers will do the rest.

Really not that surprising and in line with my prediction earlier this offseason. Lacy got fatter since the injury. A team would be desperate and overpay. No way Ted was going to spend good money on a player who has a huge chance of being injured, once again.

Is Blount still a free agent? I know he has a shady past but boy is he a horse. The problem with losing the players weve lost and some of your solutions being "ohh well we will just draft a running back ohh we will just draft a guard, etc" is that we were 1 game away from the SB (again) we should be drafting for depth more than scrambling to replace the guys we lost. And as far as depth goes its a problem when the cupboard is very low at DL, OLB, RB, OL and CB even with the signing of House. On top of the depth issue we could stand to even find a couple of starters at those positions and it could be a serious problem. I know FA is far from over I just really hope at MINIMUM there are going to be 2 or 3 new Packers on the way.

I forgot to add ILB as well. A guy like Kevin Minter would go a long way for not too much coin. Played well in a similar scheme. Instant upgrade over Ryan or Thomas. Expecting Martinez to take a HUGE step along with Lowry and Clark. I think that eventually hopefully sooner rather than later that Clark Lowry and Daniels will be a nightmare for opposing offensive lines. I swear I am optimistic sometimes.

Yes you are optimistic, because I wouldn't be holding my breath on that one. I'm seeing no consistent flashes that tell me Lowry or Clark will be stars. Hope you are right though. Seems like we never have our draft choice step up to a higher level than where they were drafted. That's the thing about Thompson, he gets some competent players, but lacks the rare superstar find.

Flashes are just that, if they were consistent they wouldnt be flashes. Lowry KINDA reminds me of the old Steeler Aaron Smith. He may not show on the stat sheet like a Calais Campbell but he will do his job every week and hold his ground, I love his size. And Clark definately had his showings of dominance. Remember hes VERY young.

I'm excited about Clark. The kid showed some hustle late in the season. Made some solid plays even if they weren't 'splashes'.
He was a 20 year old rookie for Pete's sake. Chill with the premature pessimism.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but last year MM trotted Lacy out on a bum ankle with NO backup on the roster, only to reinjure the ankle and send him to surgery.
I liked Eddie here, but you gotta think that didn't play well with him...

That's exactly what happened. The Packers are normally ultra conservative when it comes to injuries yet there was Eddie out there against Dallas playing on an ankle he shouldn't have been. Not only that, McCarthy picked THAT week to run him 17 times before he had to leave the game, 17 TIMES. That move never made sense to me last season, especially considering he hardly carried the ball 17 times for 2015 and the 6 games of 2016. Those 22 games I think he has 17 carries maybe 5 or 6 times. Makes no sense.

I wonder if you don't start thinking about taking a "flyer" on AP if the price keeps dropping.
He might be extremely motivated playing against his old team 2X per year.
I just don't see the downside, if it's the right financial deal.
