Did the Packers Avoid Disaster By Not Landing Chase Claypool?

Sometimes, the trades that fall through for NFL general managers are the best trades.

At the 2022 trade deadline, with the Green Bay Packers struggling and looking to upgrade their roster, general manager Brian Gutekunst aggressively pursued then-Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool, offering a 2023 second-round selection and a late-round selection, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. That, of course, never materialized as the Steelers traded Claypool to the Chicago Bears for a 2023 second-round pick because Pittsburgh believed that the Bears would finish worse than the Packers.

General manager Omar Kahn was correct; the Bears finished worse than the Packers, leaving the Steelers with the 32nd overall selection (first in the second round), instead of No. 50. (The NFL rescinded the Miami Dolphins’ first-round pick due to tampering violations.) For practical purposes, the Steelers received a first-round selection for Claypool. Gutekunst should send a fruit basket, and possibly more, to Kahn for declining Gutekunst’s trade offer.

In seven games last year with the Bears, the 49th overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft finished with 14 receptions for 140 yards and zero touchdowns. He averaged 4.8 yards per target and produced a drop rate of 10.3% on 29 targets (2.0% drop rate with the Steelers in 2022). Justin Field’s passer rating when targeting Claypool was 33.7. In 15 total games, he registered 46 receptions on 79 targets for 451 yards and one touchdown, and against the Packers in Week 13, he had five receptions for 28 yards and one fumble lost.

Claypool’s lackluster performance with the Bears in the second half of the 2022 season is one thing, but what should be the most concerning is how the Notre Dame product has reportedly conducted himself as of late.

Marc Silverman of Waddle & Silvy on ESPN 1000 in Chicago “heard from a few people inside that building that he is not somebody who is very self-motivated. There’s a long way to go. … All I can tell you is it isn’t trending in a way that the Bears have wanted it to trend in this offseason.

“Chase Claypool is a guy that they’ve wanted to see some things from. They have not been able to see those things from him on and off the field.”

Claypool did not participate in the team’s minicamp last week and instead worked with the team trainers because he was “dealing with a few things,” according to head coach Matt Eberflus. Prior to the team’s minicamp, Eberflus said that Claypool was dealing with a soft-tissue injury.

It is possible that Claypool returns to his rookie form, a season in which he finished with 873 receiving yards and 11 total touchdowns. His 2022 stat line with the Bears may also be a sign of things to come. I am betting on the latter. So, sometimes, the trades that fall through for NFL general managers are the best trades.

Not Claypool's fault. The culture down there's unbearable.

Steelers dumped him for a reason. If Mike Tomlin gave up on him, then he must really be a clown.

I'm glad the Packers didn't trade for Claypool. It would have hindered the development of Watson and Doubs who form the team's future at receiver. I also like this year's rookie crop of receiving talent.

This is why the Packers win the division so often, and why the Bears don't. We don't trade for Claypool, or Khalil Mack, or Jay Cutler. We don't spend a first round pick on a QB and throw him into the fire with a crappy team around him, but rather we draft our guy and let him learn and improve for a while.

It's called having a plan, and not just grabbing shiny objects that become available.

Well, the Packers did try to get Claypool, apparently, but they still get credit for not actually getting him. They could've offered a little more than they did to essentially break the tie with the Bears, but they didn't.

Very true that the Packers have had a much better plan than the Bears for team building--for a long, long time now. The Bears were the toast of the league when they drafted Justin Fields. It doesn't look so good now, although maybe there is still hope for things to click for him, as they eventually did for Josh Allen.

Good point, I had forgotten about that. They lost out to the Bears for the same reason they did with Claypool: The Bears' draft pick was expected to be more valuable than the Packers' draft pick. (It didn't turn out that way, but Mack probably had a lot to do with the Bears having a better record than the Packers that year.)

Mark Murphy later admitted: “I don’t know if it is good to have the highest-paid offensive player in the league, and the highest-paid defensive player in the league. Is that a good way to build a team?”

The Packers probably dodged a bullet with that one too.

Maybe Packer FO just want to rise the price for the opponent?

My guess is that with all the negative publicity, Claypool gets it together and becomes a pretty good receiver - at least until any success resurfaces the diva gene again.

Not showing up for minicamp…answering the age old question does a bear sh*t in the (Lake) forest. Answer: yes…all of them.

In retrospect I'm glad Gute did not make a move in FA. Our offense bombed and our QB1 is a NY Jet. It could not have worked out any better for us. Now we have 4-5 good WR prospects, a couple good TE prospects and a young team brimming with positivity. GPG

"...Justin Field’s passer rating when targeting Claypool was 33.7" so, just a smidge above his usual completion/passer rating. Justin Field is a 21st century Bobby Douglas.

Justin Fields' throwing motion/release reminds me of Luis Tiant. But slower, with less accuracy and velocity.

It's throwing a football. Surely, somewhere, a coach could help with that. Hell, I've taught 7th grade girls to throw spirals

In seriousness, looking at the Bears offseason moves, I think you'll see a lot of double TE and Fields throwing short or running. I'm expecting Old School style of offense out of Chicago this year, at least until Fields is broken.

Buyer beware with Norte Dame players. Their recent performance history is not great in the NFL. So glad the Pack did not "chase" after Claypool.

I gonna have to object to the premise of this article as you're assuming facts not in evidence. We have no idea how he would have played in GBs offense with Rodgers throwing him the football. We don't know how motivated he would have been last year or this year paired with a guy like Christian Watson in a Matt LaFluer offense. Also having vets like Lazard and Cobb there to show him the GB way and the standard that room holds itself to. Darnell Mooney and EQ St. Brown don't quite move the needle in the mentoring department.

I'm quite alright with the fact that we didn't land him but I do think of what might have been seeing him and Watson lining up in the field together this year or last. Two guys that size with that kind of elite athleticism would have been a sight to see.
