Cory's Corner: Why Not Ndamukong Suh?

But…why not Ndamukong Suh? Why should the rest of the NFL wait on baited breath for the Patriots to sign an impact veteran?

This is unthinkable and maybe many Packers’ fans think it’s detestable.

But…why not Ndamukong Suh? Why should the rest of the NFL wait on baited breath for the Patriots to sign an impact veteran?

Yes, I know Suh has been a thorn in the Shield’s side for his entire career. He has been fined $216,875 and has been voted by his peers as the dirtiest player in the NFL.

But I say again, if the Patriots can swallow hard and bring him in to the fold, why can’t the Packers? Green Bay is claiming that it is in win-now territory and this move would certainly qualify as that.

Why? Well, Suh has been a top 10 defensive lineman since 2012. If the Packers sign him, the Packers instantly have two defensive linemen in the top 10 along with Kenny Clark — which really helps out new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

Obviously, Aaron Rodgers’ left leg has a huge problem with this. In 2014, Suh backed up and put all of his weight on the quarterback’s leg before being pushed away. The worst part about that incident is that Suh claimed his feet were numb and he didn’t know the difference between the ground and Rodgers’ foot.

Come on man. The video of that looked awful. Heck, a lot of what Suh has done has looked awful. He has been a guy that doesn’t turn off his motor at the shrill of the whistle and he has made it worse by trying to justify what he did.

Yet, after all that, I guarantee you that at least one team will be ready to give the 31-year-old a call. And I think the argument from the Packers can be made this way: “Listen, you’re still a remarkable talent in this league. However, we cannot have you cost us yards and momentum that would ultimately cost us games — especially for things that are deliberate and petty. If you continue the dirty play, you won’t be a member of the Packers. Period. Do you want one last chance to win a title?”

I think that’s the best way for general manager Brian Gutekunst to frame this. It addresses the elephant in the room while pointing out what the Packers have their eyes on.

Suh’s legacy has been muddied with boneheaded and irresponsible plays that overshadow all the good things that he has done on the field.

If he wants that legacy to change, a great place for a reset would be Green Bay. You get to play your former team twice a year and you get to play alongside a rising defensive lineman that could learn a thing or two from one of the best at the position in the last six years.

Why not Green Bay?

Oh Cory, this is not a good idea. No matter what Suh is still going to cost a lot of money. At THAT kind of money and at 31 years old I can think of quite a few ways to better spend what little cap space the Packers have.

I agree because Suh doesn't strike me as a team-first guy. If he is, then he's going to the team that offers him the biggest contract, and we certainly don't want to win that contest.

I'd be all in favor of it if he was looking to win and be paid reasonably, but i suspect thats not going to happen.

I have been frustrated at times with the way the Packers have played hard when a draft position was at stake. For example the Troy Aikman prize. But on the other hand I felt good about supporting a team with integrity. Suh is a classless SOB and I personally would turn off the set than watch this man in Green and Gold!!!!

I agree NP, this is not a good idea at all. First of all, we don't need an interior DL. It's possibly the strongest position on the team outside of QB (not that that stopped us from moving a CB for backup QB..ugh). Second, Suh will demand 10 mil AAV. If we're going to cut one of our vets and spend that money on a FA, it had better not be on an interior DL. Third, Suh is a grade A butthole. I don't want a butthole on our team unless we NEED him to win.

We don't. Pass.

"Third, Suh is a grade A butthole. I don't want a butthole on our team unless we NEED him to win."

LOL. Yeah, he is that. And to be fair, I think he would probably also be our best D-lineman, better than Daniels or Clark. But I probably wouldn't sign him because he's almost certainly going to cost too much, he's pretty old for a long-term contract, and because I do think you need to wonder how his "grade A buttholishness" is going to affect the team, especially a young guy like Kenny Clark.

Personally, I doubt you'll get much better bang for the buck with Wilkerson. Both of them would be upgrades, for sure. But both are probably too pricey for GB. Suh will cost more than Wilkerson, but he's also better than Wilkerson.

If you really want to spend on a D-line guy, how much for a Beau Allen or a Daquan Jones? Both in their mid-20s, both about 330 lbs and could probably play nose. I'd say they are both a notch better than Lowrey, and are in the rotation at a bare minimum. Then again, I don't think you add a guy at D-line unless he's a true difference maker. Otherwise, there are more important needs.

We'd be getting Wilkerson for his pass rushing ability at Elephant End. That would be my guess. Of course, Suh is a good pass rusher too.... If either of them cost 10 Mil AAV, I am on the "pass wagon."

That's exactly it: one-dimensional run-stuffers can be had for far less. They're both good against the run. If either of these guys ends up in GB, it will be a gamble on their ability to get back to 8+ sack seasons.

Wilkerson's too big for an elephant, unless you mean a literal one. He's a 3-4 DE or a 4-3 tackle. But I agree with you and Dobber that true pass rushing upgrades will probably be too expensive.

Going against the grain here but Barrs hit was clean . Rodgers is known for rolling out to his left and willing to be a Runner . Barr reacts to tackle a Runner . Catches up to him and makes a tackle . That doesn't make it
unnecessary roughness .

Then plants and launches does what the rules clearly state is "driving an opponent into the ground" which is further described as illegal.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DMMlTaFX0AAWqtW.jpg

I really don't understand wtf the league's thinking is and why they defended a player like Barr for what was clearly an illegal hit and worse, against a marquee player.

Mostly the defense is it was unavoidable, but it was and that he was out of the pocket and if the QB is free game for all shots. Again that is also not true as it is spelled very plainly in the rules.

If the contract didn't kill us, I'd be all for it as well.

What good does it do to have a bunch of choir boys? How does that help us get back to the Super Bowl?

Jordy & Cobb are great people, great Christians, yet half of Packer nation wants them cut.

Matthews has been dirty. I don't care. Daniels makes a lot of bonehead plays, penalties. Y'all still love him, as I do. Suh is 2x the player Big Mike is.

He'd sign-off on adding Suh.

What does any of that have to do with a player that’s stomped on EDS, smashed that same players head into the field, stepped on Rodgers injured leg, kicked Matt Schaub in the nuts, gave Cutler a forearm to the back of the head and that’s just what I can remember. No thanks you want toughness and grittiness not a dirtiness. You’re comparing apples to oranges.

FA DL = Lets compare Vita Vea , or any DL draftee to Suh and Wilkerson. The more you want a DL. The more Vea would be a better option. The eagles showed what big men up front can do. So to solve the draft @14. FA/Gute must bring in a CB, DL.

LOL. This is one of the funniest things I've read in a long while. "Now listen here, my good sir. Let me be straight with you. Should I discover that you are conducting yourself in an unsavory manner whilst on the field as a Green Bay Packer, do not think that I will hesitate to remove you from this roster promptly. Now can I trust that we are clear on this?"

Dont like to bash the writers as its free to read. But corey you need to think a bit more before posting.

If you are going to keep posting about who we should sign or trade for you at least need to discuss how they fit within the cap. We probably need to cut a receiver to pay for randall replacement so do we cut them both to sign suh ? Leaving us with no tight ends and adams to catch balls. Who replaces them and do we need to keep cutting to replace the receivers.

We have very limited cap room and a lot of holes to fill so spending 10m on our strongest position would seem odd.

I wouldn't say he's "all about the money." He's been playing well even after cashing in. He's not Aaron Donald, but he's pretty dang good, no matter how detestable he may be as a human being. But yeah, the idea that Suh is going to straighten up and fly right just because some Packer coach gave him a lecture, just like all the other lectures he's been receiving ever since he first put on pads, is just kind of stupid and naive.

I tend to agree: he's had a lesser supporting cast in Miami where he's been "the guy" on that DL and is still scoring 4-5 sacks per season and plenty of tackles. He misses Fairley and the others on that very strong DL they had in Detroit. He's been healthy (hasn't missed a game in years). He seems to have cleaned up some of his on-field crap. All told, I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot and NOT look at him if I think he can help my team just because of that past trash. He's going to cost good money, though, and at 31 you have to ask how many years you could give him (or he could give you). Wilkerson's a 3-4 guy and 3 years younger...Suh's never played a 3-4, but I could see him essentially filling that DE role.

Youth, speed, skill...

all available in the draft in spades. No WR worries, we need to mix in some youth with upside (read NOT Davis or UDFA flotsam), we have vet leadership and can afford the youth alongside them (note NOT behind them)

Lets keep an eye on what we cannot get in the draft and then manuever to achieve those goals via trade or FA. Notably we really need some veteran influence in the secondary and some pass rush from anywhere!

FA seems depleted of pass rush, so we will need to bite the bullet there and just go young with potential, or maybe, just maybe, we could pull off a trade using some of our draft capital for an established pass rusher. Not a superstar, but someone at least consistent to bring some productivity until the youth pans out.

A vet CB is a need

It is wildly unpopular to say it Oz, but these are the same Packers.

Bears land Allen Robinson and Trey Burton (I guess it's important to give your QB weapons)
Vikings get Cousins

What have we done? The same thing we do at every time this time of the year. I will say this, though...after seeing Watkins deal, it makes what looked like a terrible overpay to Davante not that at all, if it's truly 16 per.

I fell for the "change". I feel duped and should've known better.

Seriously though, don't you think you might be jumping the gun a teensy bit? I mean, you stated pretty plainly that you had written off Gutekunst well before it was even possible to sign any free agents. Not sure what you were expecting him to do back then. As for now, I think there are a few more free agents than the ones who are already signed, right?

If I understand you right, I agree completely about the Watkins deal. It makes Davante look like a steal. Those are the kind of guys that I'm glad neither TT nor Gutekunst seem inclined to sign.

If the Packers can get a steady rotational D-lineman, they should be pretty solid up front. I would rather they spend the bucks on secondary and pass rusher talent.

Too bad! We don’t need a 31 y/o TE... we need to build our team with draft choices and not sign geezers to appease ARod!!!

I think your right here. Richard Rodgers speed. Just won't fall down. 3 years is to long for this guy. He's seen better days. The bears got the prize. We got the dingaling.

It'll be interesting to see what JG signs for. Did GB just gain or lose cap space?

Jordy had 6 TDs in five games! , before ARod got hurt. Yeah, let’s get rid of him but keep Cobb... idiots. Wtf!

And that Nelson will be released. I wonder if they will try to resign him. He looked pretty bad last year.

Signing Graham is basically signing a WR. Can't block a lick, and doesn't even play in-line that often.

Not at all. Bennett was a superior blocker. Just a headcase, that's all.....

Omg. We signed 31 years old TE and give rest of our money to 34 years old.
I think our FA activity this year is in the books?
TT is still strong at GB.

Bears and Vikings get talent, we get old guy TE Jimmy Graham (JG) And adding insult to injury, Jordy gets whacked to make JG deal happen? Ugh.

This is a move to make King ARod happy! I wish we’d just start over... I’m tired of second tier everywhere but, one or three positions! Has Graham been injured as well? As much as I liked the Kizer/Randall trade, I dislike this one even more!
