Cory's Corner: Time For The No Fear Offense

The Packers are one of the worst starters in the NFL. It's time to take the training wheels off.

There are slow starters and then there are the Green Bay Packers.

This team has given new meaning to the term digging a hole as they are ranked 31st in average points scored in the first half at 5.2 — trailing only the 1-5 Giants, who are scoring 4.2.

Granted, the Packers have been without top running back Aaron Jones for most of the season as he has dealt with a pesky hamstring injury. The offensive line has also been hurting with injuries to David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins. I get that not having those guys in addition to No. 1 wideout Christian Watson may force coach Matt LaFleur to play close to the vest.

But there’s a difference between playing close to the vest and playing scared. Remember when LaFleur got here and there was a smorgasbord of presnap motion combined with misdirection and play-action? Aaron Rodgers and the bootleg became a great marriage and I’ve been looking for the same hookup with Jordan Love.

Remember when we were all screaming for Rodgers to trust his receivers? Well, not the question should be, why doesn’t LaFleur trust Love? I know that Love will be starting his seventh career game in Denver but at some point you have to know if he can sink or swim.

We are five games into Love’s first tour as QB1 and I still don’t know if he’s the future franchise quarterback. Maybe LaFleur doesn’t know either. But if there’s any shadow of a doubt from LaFleur now, then it’s safe to start wondering if trading up to No. 26 in the 2020 NFL Draft to get the Utah State product was a mistake.

Right now, Love’s best quality is his legs. If he can learn to extend plays and make defensive backs cover longer, he’s going to be an invaluable weapon. He uses weird, and often unnecessary, arm angles. His deep ball is something to be desired because it looks like a fourth grade recess where the receiver stops to catch a pass that looks like it’s attracting rain.

But even with all of those things we have to know what we have to know. The Packers signed Love to a one-year deal mainly because they weren’t sure what he was going to give them. Which in itself is a little sad because if a player is in your system for three years, shouldn’t he be ready to roll and confident mentally?

The Broncos have been licking their wounds all season. They have looked clunky on offense by only averaging 21.5 points a game — good for a 17th place tie with Minnesota. And the defense has been exponentially worse by giving up 33.3 points a game — dead last in the league by over two points. (Thanks in part to giving up 70 points to the Dolphins in Week 3.)

The Packers are coming off a bye and have had plenty of time to prepare. If the Packers are going to reverse course and start fast, it’s going to be this week. And if they once again come out of the gates looking like dry oatmeal, then I’m not sure what Love can do to appeal to LaFleur’s trust.

This isn’t just a test for Love. It’s a test for LaFleur. Even without Jones, the Packers have pieces on offense that can be utilized in many different ways. Remember when tight end Luke Musgrave took the handoff and ran an end around in training camp? I’d love to see something out of the ordinary, something called without fear or hesitation.

If the Packers are going to turn this thing around, they continue to play cautious.

The word 'if' is used nine times in this article. Six games into the season, Cory's pointed out a lot of significant questions about the team and the abundance of conditions and circumstances which have to align for the Packers to be successful.

So if you refer to them an 'iffy' team, don't feel guilty about selling them short; it's on the Packers to provide evidence fans can strike through some of those ifs when talking about the team based upon their play and their record.

We knew there would be questions going in this season, but instead of answering them, the Packers have continued adding to them. And that's a sign of a team that has more issues than youth and inexperience going against them.

If and If only are the two most used inferences for the optimist writer here. If is the precursor to their world of hope, and if only is representative of the failure of the former.

The sad thing is at no time do people refer to this team as a will or can do. Fingers are never given reason to be uncrossed, with the confidence to perform.

There is nothing wrong with optimism, except when one gets lost inside of it. Many here, were lost in it before the season, preseason, and when Love was drafted.

Yes, there must be balance, but would that optimism be fruitful if the numerous all pro veterans on this team were not injured. All teams have injuries, but this many to key players is just bad luck. This is the worst possible scenario for a young developing team.

That's a lie. I'm just able to control my optimism, and not allow it to control me.

Does it matter if you lose vets and still keep the same coaches? The injuries excuse is exacerbated by bad coaching planning and management.

So what? It makes no difference whether fans are optimistic or not. They have no need to justify their hope. Being a fan is an emotional state. One would hope that the team itself bases decisions on reality. But no one here is a pro.

Of course, you’re a fan, too. Just a different sort and no less emotional. The “realism” you pride yourself on is often based on unrealistic assessments and past reputations of Packer opponents.

Funny how you have no problem using “if” when it supports your message.
If we didn’t play the Bears.
If the Saints kicker didn’t miss.
This team would be 0-5.

You don’t even know that you talk out of both sides of your mouth.

I use it to show how much 'if' is relied upon for success, and 'if only' to show how often it doesn't come to fruition.

You and others use it as a main part of the needs to happen. Instead of can/will/do, you rely on 'ifs'.

I want to see the team do, not hope for an 'if'.

If the kicker hadn’t missed we would have lost is no different than if Jones had played we would have won. Try again.

If you’re going to lump me in with everyone else, please provide an example next time.

I don't care how many points they score but if the team stops dropping passes, missing blocks or holes (Dillon), running sweeps to the short side of the field, having Preston Smith cover the other team's best receiver, eating 5 yard runs for a game, taking really stupid penalties, then I'll be happy...or happier. But if a lineman gets hurt and Royce Newman trots off the bench then Lafleur should be fired.

So it's the coaches fault for the poor blks and dropped passes, and if another less experienced O linemen fails then it's the coaches fault for not playing the experienced player.

Last year they repeatedly played Newman over Tom even though it was clear that Tom was better. They played Lowery over Wyatt. This year, Preston Smith over Van Ness (although Lukas gives up the edge too much). These decisions are 100% on the coaches. I would also argue that disciplined practice translates to disciplined play, especially for young players.

The most surprising name on the list was Nijman. Even our backups who have rarely gotten to play this year are now showing up in the injury list. Not the most prudent $4,000,000 decision made by the FO.

This has definitely been a Murphy's Law year for GB.

I don’t think they're playing scared.
I think they're playing for shit, and know it.
Why bring up Loves draft status now.
Everyone knew it was a mistake.
(Unless you don’t follow the draft)
But he’s the guy and crying about it
Won’t help anyone now.

Even complaining about the injuries
Isn’t going to help.
Bahk set the tone and others followed.
Mlf can only do so much with these guys.
And the veterans know it.
They believe the negatives.
And there is "No game” in Green Bay.

Love is there only hope!!!!!
MLF back is against the wall.
The guys drafted must step up.
Somebody has to make plays.
Rebuild? - You wanted it, when Rodgers
Was traded.

One of the reasons I was excited to transition away from Rodgers to Love was that we'd get to see more of MLF's offense.

Strangely, we have not. Very little pre-snap motion, bunch formations, or the "illusion of complexity" that we used to hear so much about.

What's even been more baffling is given the offensive line's injuries and poor play, you'd think MLF would have quick 3 step drops and have the ball coming out quickly. He hasn't done that either. It's been eerily similar to the McCarthy days....drop back, hope someone gets open with a slow developing isolation route, go 3 and out, punt, and repeat.

Sean Payton vs. MLF is a very real storyline and the Broncos can absolutely win this game at home. If the Packers win, it's HOW they win that I'll be paying most attention to.....if they play like crap for 3 quarters and then come alive in the 4th, it's just another continuation in a frustrating season of erratic play.

Me too, but I thought our O line would be good. It's very difficult to be successful and have a complex offense when our all pro RB, LT, and G are hurt, and the rest are very young and inexperienced. Musgrave has shown pass catching ability, but is a poor blocker from a position that requires it. Blocking is the key to successful offenses, watch the good teams, and we are deficient in that category which effects all facets of our offense, and hampers the defense.

Valid points all around. It all starts up front. And the years Rodgers won MVPs, he also had a damn good offensive line and solid (if not above average) running game to boot. Hard to execute anything for any QB when you're under pressure. My whole point was that if the O-line stinks, there are still ways to scheme guys open, have quick slants and have the ball come out quickly.

Remember when the Packers went out to SF a couple years ago and won on a last minute FG to beat the Niners? In that game, MLF had the ball come out quick and gave Nijman help from Tonyan and Lewis to block Bosa. It was a game winning gameplan. Why aren't we seeing that now? That's what I'm struggling with.

The last MLF-Payton matchup was an overwhelming victory for Payton. SH mancrush Rodgers was impotent against the Saints passrush & D in general. I’d expect Payton to use the same approach. The question is whether he has the horses to do it.

I would think that LeFleur knows exactly what he has in Love now or is about to find out this Sunday for sure if he is waffling. What I would really like to be is the fly in the room when he talks with G Cunt about Love and what the two have to say.
When I looked over Loves three year stats, my opinion, this is a fourth round pick to be a back up somewhere but never starter material in the NFL at any time. How can you toss 17 interceptions in your senior year, your getting worse not better?
If LeFleur hasnt figured that out then we got the wrong coach too. The packer fans deserved better and they could have chosen some top notch GM's but went cheap with G Cunt.

I don’t think it’s playing scared or with training wheels. If it were, then Love wouldn’t have the Lowe’s short pass rate as a percentage of attempts among league starters.

It’s a failure to be able to run the ball, based primarily on refusal to trot out an appropriate OL group based upon that as a significant priority more than the injury to Jones.

On top of that failure, increasingly poor protection, our plan has been to pass long in long developing plays. Teams have figured out that even Tom can be moved and our LT and middle even more so. Yet we still have the same basic plan for a new starter.

Look, at some point the obvious smacks one in the face. Here is a nonsensical offensive plan at odds with the realities in the run game and OL and accepted wisdom on how to get any QB into rhythm, let alone a new starter.

LaFleur’s offense last year was a self defeating disaster divorced from resources. This year looks even more clueless conceptually, and just as rigid.

Sometimes the obvious stares one in the face. LaFleur is out if his depth and his coaches are equally so at their respective levels. The product is telling us weekly. So many are covering their eyes and heard to avoid the proliferating, repeated
evidence. It’s not excess caution, it’s lack of a clue.

I understand that the media is obsessed with celebrities and superstars, so I expect coverage to be largely about individuals; but, why doesn’t anyone seem to recall how BAD the Packers were on offense last season? This is an offense that has been regressing ever since 2020, and if Aaron Rodgers along with Cobb, Lazard, Bak, Jones, Lewis, etc. could not even MAKE A WILDCARD SPOT last season, why would anyone expect this offense to look at all competent with a bunch of inexperienced kids? Would another QB be more productive than Love? Probably, as long as it wasn’t a first year starter. But, again if AARON RODGERS couldn’t do almost anything with the offense last year, who may I ask would be able to come in now at QB and salvage the sinking ship?

IF the Packers comes out and score like 3 points AGAIN in the first half, hate to say it, but sit Love down and give the 2nd half engine to Clifford and see what he got. He may be the spark needed to light the fire or he might 'if possible, be worse. No better chance to see except against the worst team statistically in the league.

Cory, you said "Packers coming off a by week with plenty of time to prepare>"
I am definitely zeroing in on the O Line techniques. Would love to see good hard nose drive blocking, opening holes, sustaining holes for the backs. Fundamental head, hands & footwork. Some tough aggressive, pocket forming pass blocking. JL getting time to look, read & throw.
On defense looking forward to Van Ness busting nuts. The guy is starving for NFL coaching on pass rush techniques. He has been pretty much useless wondering around. And I think he has true All Pro potential. Needs nastiness, some violence, tough, smart aggressiveness. Kick ass & take names football.
Am I dreaming, we'll see just what kind of coach MLF is. GPG

It’s going to take at least this season and next before a reasonable assessment of Love’s ceiling becomes clearer. In the mean time a rebuild of the offense will be in order, especially the interior line, better, and show us what you got from last year and this year’s draft. Draft another qb and running back as well as linemen on both sides of the ball. Toss the coaching staff. Maybe deal some of the bigger contracts and clean house upstairs and downstairs, especially Murphy and crew. You know what I’m saying?

“We are five games into Love’s first tour as QB1 and I still don’t know if he’s the future franchise quarterback“

And you’re not going to know…at least this year. Rodgers first year was 6-10 and picks. After Rodgers 1st year …did you say “ ah ha!!! , this is our franchise QB”. No, absolutely not. No way, now how did anyone say Rodgers was a franchise QB after his first season and start laying down ultimatums or ifs to get better.

I do know a few things about football though. A team can have an absolute garbage QB and still go to the playoffs. Providing they have a team and coaching around them. Crappy QBs who made it only because of their teams and coaching….Wilson, Garappalo, Kyle Orton. You give a mediocre QB a running game, a defense, a solid special teams unit and solid TEs…and you can stick anyone in there. GB is not there…The D is less than average, The Oline is suspect at best. I haven’t seen anything special out of special teams and currently the rookie TEs are still figuring out blocking . Last year I said “ Rookie QB….draft high on OT and RB and it fell on deaf ears. An Oline and a class A RB are a Rookie QBs best friends. I said “ Jones gets injured when it’s important…no one listened. Guard and Center are GBs weak spots. Dillon is a pounder, good pass blocker but he cannot get to the outside fast enough. ut it’s also kinda hard when your centers and Guards are getting pushed 2 yards back before the ball is even handed off.
I’ll reserve judgement on love until the run game improves and we get Ol,RB, TE improvements.. I don’t see anything wrong with Reed, Doubs and Watson…or even Wicks. However , more diverse route trees need to be designed for them, and they need to be able to learn them. A #1 and #2 WR needs to have EVERY route tree in the NFL memorized Especially 2nd yr receivers… If it takes more than 2 yrs to develop a WR…that would be coaching and scouting.
