Cory's Corner: Packers shouldn't sign Davante Adams

I’m going to start by saying I’m a big Davante Adams fan.

I like his athleticism, his ability to get any ball and the chemistry he was able to make with backup Brett Hundley in a short time that will ultimately make him a decent amount of money in a contract year.

However, I would not sign Adams.

Of course you read that and think I’m off my rocker. You’re probably saying, “How the heck do the Packers NOT bring back their No. 1 wideout from a this year?” I understand that, because Jordy Nelson will be 33 next season, Randall Cobb hasn’t shown much of anything this year and the tight end position has been one big regret.

First, it comes down to health. Adams has been decleated not once but twice this year by Danny Trevathan and Thomas Davis. Adams has now suffered three concussions in two seasons. We’re not quite to Sam Shields territory yet, but the Packers have to start giving pause with the number of vicious hits that he has taken. It sounds disingenuous, but the Packers can’t shell out over $11 million a season to another receiver only to see him nurse another concussion.

Secondly, it’s about priority. The Packers don’t need more offensive weapons. Especially when Aaron Rodgers, the best passer in the NFL, is still the Packers’ quarterback — and they now have a legitimate dual-threat at running back.

The Packers have other questions to answer. In today’s NFL, the defensive backs are at a tremendous disadvantage, which puts a premium on pressuring the quarterback. That didn’t happen on Sunday as Cam Newton was kept clean on 77 percent of his dropbacks or last month when Ben Roethlisberger was only under pressure on nine of his 49 dropbacks. And in October, Dak Prescott faced pressure on eight of his 40 dropbacks.

If the Packers want to be a championship team these are the quarterbacks they have to beat. They need to draft a guy like Clemson’s Clelin Ferrell or go get Seattle’s Sheldon Richardson in free agency. Let’s face it, this secondary isn’t going to be fixed with one body. But one person could make all the difference for a team that was backed into a corner to overpay for Nick Perry.

And just when the pass rush is figured out, what the heck do the Packers do with right tackle? Bryan Bulaga has missed nine games due to injury and is the third-highest paid right tackle at $7.8 million this year. And it’s obvious that Jason Spriggs isn’t the answer. He has been exposed this season as someone that just cannot translate to the NFL game. The Packers could bring in Notre Dame’s Mike McGlinchey to solidify the right side of the line — or they could go cheap and bring back Don Barclay.

Remember that Rodgers turned 34 in December. If you cannot consistently get after the other team’s quarterback, you better protect your own.

I know that Rodgers has been campaigning for Adams already. And that makes sense. Rodgers wants the Packers to bring back one of his guys.

That will make Rodgers happy, but it won’t make the team exponentially better.

Can’t agree with this. Both concussions were deliberate take outs rather than incedental. Moreover, recovery from first was fast. While repeated instances can make recurrences more likely, Adams does not seem prone to them in the ordinary course of play. As such, his talent clearly justifies resigning for me.

I think the secondary problem looks to be less players and more coordinator, with a little inexperience sprinkled in. If one is to cut ties with a receiver then Adams is the last one should consider. I think the D has taken and youth. Next year could be exciting not a time for a clear out of current elite skill players.

Well said Coldwater. Davante Adams is the brightest spot on this WR corps and the man going forward. I'll cut it short and just confirm that Cory is "off his rocker".

they would be stupid to let Adams get away concussed 3 times or not. he may play out his career without another one. you have to take the chance with a guy of his talent. if you let him go it's another BIG hole to fill. i really don't follow your reasoning on this one.

Wow...If being depressed about this season wasn't enough now I'm depressed about the future even more. Cory has managed to mention just a few of the Packers needs heading into this off-season yet it feels almost insurmountable with a GM like Thompson. History shows us he won't/can't do what's necessary to rebuild the Packers in one off-season.

Rodgers injury showed just how short in talent the Packers are in several positions this season. TE, WR, OL, OLB, and CB all could be considered 1st round options for the Packers because the need is so high.

The Packers are in the EXACT SAME position with Adams as they were with Perry last season. Either they overpay him to keep him, or let him walk and you have what? If they don't sign Adams you have the best QB on the planet throwing to who?

Ted Thompson has put the Packers in this position. The Packers are completely VOID in talent on certain positions. IMO they have to sign Adams AND use a high pick at WR and at least a 3rd at TE. Lets not forget about the pass rush either. The Packers need at least 2 high picks to improve that pass rush. Letting Adams walk means they have Nelson, Cobb, and???

" and they now have a legitimate dual-threat at running back."

Common Cory.... New Orleans has a "Legitimate Dual Threat" with Ingram and Kamara. The Packers have a little more hope about the RB position than they had at the beginning of 2017 but that's all. I think they'll be some pretty good RB, but the sample size is WAY to small to call them "Legitimate" yet.

"New Orleans has a "Legitimate Dual Threat" with Ingram and Kamara."

That's a RB-centered, low-risk, short-passing-game, RAC offense, now. What do they have at WR and TE? Michael Thomas and a bunch of replacement-level guys, and Thomas has only had a couple big games all season. In essence, it's the Falcons of last season only the QB is better and the WR aren't as good. Frankly, the Saints are the model offense of the current era, and there's no reason why the Packers can't go in that direction.

here's what the Packers need to do. number one is get rid of Capers. bring in someone with experience that has had success in building a defense. or, there has to be some young up and coming defensive coaches out there that can build a great defense.
once you have that person then look to build this defense from bottom up if you have to. the building blocks are there in Clark, Martinez, Lowry, King, Jones, Daniels. you have to add to the pass rush in a big way through the draft and FA. both edge rusher and DL. also add an elite CB and a safety. another very fast inside LB would be a great addition to pair with Martinez. if you build this defense into a top 10 it makes the offense that much better. look at Minnesota.....great defense keeps them in every game even though they have a mediocre QB. What the hell happened to HaHa this year? he is not the answer if he continues to play soft......draft or sign another good safety.
on offense, Rodgers needs protection. Bulaga is always injured so part ways with him and draft a right tackle. look for other OL in FA. Rodgers also needs more weapons. Early round FAST WR and TE are 2 priorities. RB is looking good for the future.
its a lot to ask but with a ton of draft picks and FA it can be done. more than anything, Capers needs to go and that defense needs an infusion of talent. get the right D coordinator and pump that defense and there's no stopping this team. TT needs to do a better job in the draft and i would hope that Wolf has a lot of input into it(if he is going to succeed TT). i'd love to see some horse trading going onbefore and during the draft like Wolf used to do and was very successful at.

Cory, sorry but I disagree with a lot of this.

First I disagree by saying that they shouldn't resign him. They absolutely should resign him. But now the question becomes how much and they should have a clause in it if his career ends due to concussions.

I actually disagree about Rodgers not needing more offensive weapons. They actually need more weapons, not less. Nelson is old, and doesn't create the separation that he used to. Cobb creates separation but isn't a number 1. Their TE's while better with Rodgers, are not scaring anyone. The RB's are great, and as a whole the OL is good.
Everyone wants to talk about the defense being exposed with Rodgers gone, but the truth is the offensive weapons were exposed with Rodgers gone. Adams was the only one that could constantly get open. They have to add more size and speed to the WR position, as well as help at TE.

The offense needs a few players, the defense needs a few players. If we could add a threat at WR and a good TE on offense that would do wonders. Defense they need another pass rusher (or a few of them) and more CB's. To go a long with a new defensive coordinator.

This team is not far away, they just need a few key pieces. A year drafting higher could really do well for this team. Its not just about the first round. They will now be drafting players about 10 spots higher then they normally do. They have to nail this draft!

"I actually disagree about Rodgers not needing more offensive weapons. They actually need more weapons, not less. "

I read the comment Cory made with regard to this above and my jaw hit the floor. I don't care where those weapons come from, but they've got to find legitimate threats for #12 to utilize. Many of us started voicing the concussions concerns on Sunday after Adams got pounded by Davis, so maybe Adams isn't that guy, but you can't have the best QB in the league throwing to a depth chart at WR that is essentially 5 Geronimo Allisons.

I can't help but think how the game would have been different had Adams been playing instead of Allison. I thought Allison was going to have a huge impact this year, but he didn't.
Had Adams been playing, i just have a feeling we win that game. He draws a lot of attention now.

Rodgers can make guys like Allison look a lot better then they are. But that is the problem. Having guys look better then what they are... They need to get better players, so that when Rodgers elevates their games, they are unstoppable...

Didn't 2015 show us that there's only so much that #12 can do? That offense was stagnant and frustrating in the absence of Nelson, who was playing at his peak. Don't think I'm disagreeing with you: I'm on the same page. ARod makes this offense bigger than the sum of its parts, but the parts need to still be something he can elevate.

If #17 is allowed to walk they need to find at least a comparable player to replace him, and if it's in the draft, that roll of the dice needs to pay immediately. If it's in FA, they're not saving any $$, and a comparable guy with a clean injury history is likely to cost more.

Yeah, but Rodgers was to blame for a lot of that. He was an average QB that year - regardless of the quality of his weapons. The sad this is that the defense was actually (until OT in the divisional round) pretty solid that year too.

Yes, but my point is that he's going to decline. Time always wins out and--in all likelihood--he's plateaued in his play. Maybe it starts next year...and do you go into the season with a diminished set of offensive weapons just expecting that #12 will make a bunch of also-rans look like pro-bowlers?

TT, or whatever wunderkind is calling the shots, needs to be ahead of the curve, not responding to it. There needs to be a plan to adjust in the face of the decline in athleticism and arm talent that is inevitably coming with ARod. Finding a couple RBs who look like they can play was a great start. Maybe TT was looking at Atlanta's offense last season and thinking, "Wouldn't it be great if we could do that?" I don't give TT credit for thinking that way when he drafted them, since his history is one of overreaction.

Still, this offense can't continue as it has. It needs to evolve and change because it's leader is going to change, and likely not for the better.

Sounds like we agree...

If they are going out in FA to get a WR, they won't be getting a guy better then Adams. And like you said they aren't going to save much money. Jarvis Landry is set to be a FA (likely won't make it to FA). He will command a salary similar to Adams. Would you rather have Landry or Adams. Myself, Adams..
If they go with the draft it will take 2-3 years to full be on the same page as Rodgers.

They honestly have to keep Adams and draft a WR higher up. 2nd-4th rounds.

If Landry is faster, which he probably is, and has no concussion or other injury history, it just might be a better investment.
Rodgers will turn him into a superstar, IF he doesn't break his collarbone again.

" If it's in FA, they're not saving any $$, and a comparable guy with a clean injury history is likely to cost more."

True, short term. But if he has a career ending concussion week 2 next season and his $22M in guaranteed money accelerates, that won't be so cheap.

I haven't made up my mind on Adams. Could be time to think short term with AR getting older. I haven't found any argument pro or con persuasive (and I blame Dobber and RC for not making one!). I also think Adams is the best boundary WR in free agency, so there is no comparable guy, unless it is someone under the radar (or at least off my radar).

Right now I'm probably with RC: this is the same situation we had with Perry. There is no talent in the pipeline behind Adams, so we only have bad choices. Maybe his contract can be structured with an easy 3 yr out, and only a moderately painful 2 yr out. I doubt Adams would accept a split contract as RC alluded to.

it would be stupidity to get rid of Adams now. he is their number 1 and you never know how these FA respond to a new system or QB. resign him and draft a Fast WR that can keep the D honest...1st ,2nd round guy! the complaints about Allison are unfounded. the guy gets open and catches the ball. he's not the fastest but he is worth keeping. maybe Clark will step up and be a viable big target next year. Davis is your punt returner so it will be a numbers game again next year with Janis. you have to look at Cobbs contract and lower his salary or cut him.

OMG. Cory -YOU GET IT. You said it perfectly. Ferrel would be a great choice. And TT shouldn't stop there. DE's and pass rushers, only this year. A-Rod has turned into a great Hall of Fame QB. Take advantage of it! AGAIN! You can't pay Adams! Somebody finally addressed Adams from a logical point of view. A-Rod will only have eyes for him, as he gets older. The defenses of the NFL will stop Adams. This offense should not be about ADAMS. Thank him for his services, and let him go. It's the smart thing to do!

There is only so much a QB can do to paper over poor talent in the pass game. 2015 showed us those limits when Nelson was on IR, Cobb & Adams banged up, the TEs ineffective and Jarrett Boykin was the top WR. The result was that Rodgers needed a miracle Hail Mary just to get to 20 in the playoffs. I don't know if Geronimo Allison or Michael Clark will develop into legit players or just be the next Boykin. I think the Packers need to hedge those bets with other alternatives. They could also use a TE to stretch the field. The Packer offense looked much more dangerous when they had a healthy Finley or Cook available.

I definitely agree that pass rush is a huge area of need that must be addressed this offseason. But that is not the only area of need on the roster.

Don't over re-act to this article. The packers still did well after Adams went down Sunday. You can't Fumble Balls!! Everything about the defense was predicted. We Have a RB game now. We still have Monty. Hundley doesn't have touch yet. Defense wins super-bowls. How many times have the packers had a shot, only to see another disappointment end their season. You guys can't believe Adams is Hall of Fame stuff. The money you will pay ADAMS only will hurt this team later! Thats so true!!! WE Don't have a millionaire that likes to blow money. But this team needs a new direction. Yes Caper's must go.

Over the last 9 weeks, Davante Adams is the only guy who consistently got open and got production. Even when Hundley locked onto him at the line of scrimmage - he got open. Even when teams knew that Adams was carrying the load, Adams produced. He is the new Jordy Nelson - the new go-to guy. WHY would you want to get rid of him!

Get a speed guy or stud TE to compliment Davante Adams and this offense will be unstoppable. Don't get rid of the guy who's blossomed into a true number one WR. If you are afraid of paying a guy who has earned a market contract then pro sports must be a total mystery to you.

I'm not over-reacting to this article or yesterday's game. In fact, the point I mentioned was from two years ago when the lack of pass catching talent was far more pronounced than it is now, with or without Adams.

Further, I didn't even mention Adams. I don't think they should pay him whatever he wants. If some other team is willing to do so, I'll wish him luck (except when he plays the Packers). With FA so close, I understand that he might get away and will remain open-minded about that happening until I see the numbers on his next deal.

All I was saying is that "weapons for Rodgers" is a real thing that must be cared after.

I definitely agree that years of investing heavily to "fix' the defense has not produced results. And has resulted in some degradation of the offense.

Hopefully in about 2 weeks, we're learning that it won't be Capers making use of whatever draft resources are used on defense.

"They have to nail this draft!"...Opps I meant this as a reply to RC's comment.

Is Elliott Wolf going to be making the picks? If not expect more of the soft Pac 12 and Mountain West players to be TT picks. God forbid he look to the SEC or Big 10 in the early rounds. I fully expect Thompson to still be here so my hope is he goes outside the Pac 12 AND he STOPS drafting players with injury history's in college.

BUT...If Thompson was able to put together a draft like the Saints had this season the Packers would be in business. The Saints had 6 picks in the first 3 rounds after some trades and comp picks and absolutely NAILED every one of them.

BTW... Does anybody else find it strange every other team in the NFL is able to get production out of their draft picks as rookies and the Packers never seem to really get that same production? We always make the EXCUSES (Myself included) that MM offense takes 3 years to learn or Capers defense is to complicated for them to really contribute. BULL CRAP, at some point maybe it's time to look at the coaches ability to coach!!!

The Packers draft late in the first round EVERY year. It's harder to find great talent at that part of the draft for a reason. That said, you can't really complain with what Thompson has done in the draft the last few years ... Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry, Blake Martinez, Kevin King, Josh Jones, Jamaal Williams, Aaron Jones all look like bright spots from drafts the last two seasons.

Green Bay is going to have a chance to draft an impact player in the middle of the first round for once this year ... hopefully the Packers take advantage.

If the season ended today they would have the 16th pick. Considering their average spot is in the mid to late 20's, they will be picking roughly 10 spots higher then normal.

They could potentially get an impact edge rusher, or shutdown type of CB. A lot will change between now and the draft, but they should be in position to get a really good player that they typically don't get. And again its not just the first round. Its picking 10 spots higher in each round that could make a huge difference.
Look at 2015 draft for example. Packers had the 30th pick, the Vikings had the 11th. Vikings take Trae Waynes with their first pick, then with the 45th pick they take Eric Kendricks. Packers took Randall at 30. Vikings basically got 2 first round caliber type of players to the Packers 1 player. Packers next pick at 62 they took Rollins. Almost 20 picks after the Vikings took Kendricks. That is a lot of players they missed out on.
Picking higher this year, they may now get a Kendricks type of player in the middle of the 2nd round.

First of all, Waynes sucks.

Second, have you looked at the OLB position in the 2018 draft yet? It's not good. Only 1 consensus top 10 pick (instead of 3 last year IIRC) and every single scouting report points out injury or measurable problems with all the 1-2nd round OLBs after the 1 dude from LSU.

If we want an impact OLB, we're going to have to pay through the nose to get him.

yeah, looking at the hindsight of it, Waynes is not good. At the time he was highly thought of. But also look at some of players taken not far after Waynes. Melvin Gordon, Arik Armstead, Marcus Peters. All of which the Packers had no shot at.

Right now there are a few guys that I think could have an impact for the Packers, (assuming they stay with the 3-4 defense).
Right now Ogbonnia Okoronkwo from Oklahamo is an explosive edge rusher that would fit great in Green Bay's defense.
Arden Key is a guy that has the skills but is inconsistent and has some injuries. But he could be a star at 3-4 OLB.

They might be able to find some guys in the next few rounds as well.
They might be better looking at CB's again. Josh Jackson is a ballhawk. Denzel Ward is another Ohio State guy.

we are very early in the draft process. The draft season really starts during Senior Bowl week.

LOL... Just look at the Saints draft this last season. The Saints had 3 or 4 picks in the 3rd round and EVERYONE is looking a hell of a lot better than Thompson's first 2 picks. That means Thompson passed on those 3 or 4 players EACH twice.

Teams that draft late in the draft always seem to find players. Why is it only in GB that they have an issues finding a player in the early rounds year after year?

BTW... Did you even watch them play this year after Rodgers injury? Please tell me just who your so damn excited about in the 2017 or even 2016 or 2015 drafts? EVERY news media source is asking the same questions. Are the Packers done being an NFC power? Based on what we saw without Rodgers on the field I'd say the answer is a resounding YES. Take a look yourself. 31 defensive players taken since 2011 and they field THAT defense...LOL..Cut it out, your killing me!

I honestly wish Wolf would be making these picks. My 'gut' feeling is that Thompson will do this draft and 'retire' after the draft. They will have Wolf take over next year. Thats just my gut feeling.

I am not sure why Thompson loves Pac 12 players so much but to be fair the last few drafts he did get some good players from there. Last year Kenny Clark - UCLA, Blake Martinez - Stanford. This year he took Kevin King - Washington. 2015 he took Damarious Randall - Arizona State. Among some others.

I agree, they could use a Saints like draft. In all honestly they probably need 2-3 key players to contribute.
That being said I think Thompson did do a good job these last 2 drafts of adding some really good young players that should continue to rise. 2016 - Clark, Martinez, Lowry are all starters. Spriggs at worst is a backup and Murphy should be a backup. Davis is their PR.
2017 - King, Jones, Adams, Biegel, Williams, Jones
We have no idea how 2017 draft will turn out but each player has at least flashed some skills.

The Saints obviously got REALLY lucky this year in the draft.

1st) CB... Marshon Lattimore. Starter
1st) OL.. Ryan Ramczyk Starter
2nd) S....Marcus Williams Starter
3rd) Alvin Kamara... Starter 1B...Oh what Rodgers could have done W/Him
3rd) Alez Anzalone...Was a starter and killing it before injury
3rd) Try Hendrickson...Depth but has played pretty well in relief.

Those first 5 picks have all played a HUGE role in the Saints turnaround and all came from Power 5 confrences.

I like Josh jones and I'm hopeful Kings injuries are behind him. But the night they drafted him what I saw was 6' 3" of skin and bones. It will be tough to put much "Good Weight" on this off-season because of surgery but well see. Adams and Biegel did nothing because of why? INJURIES..UGH

You are definitely right.
Sometimes all it takes is hitting on 1-2 key players. Well the Saints hit it huge on their first 4.
Kamara is in the running for OROY, and he was a 3rd round pick.

I like the Packers rookies. I think they will be good. But honestly if it wasn't for Williams and Jones, the Rookie class would look really bad right now, from all the injuries. Biegel didn't get to start the year until week 6. And King couldn't finish the year. Adams also basically has been out most of the year due to an injury. So 3 of the top 4 picks missed significant playing time due to injury. ughh.... Hopefully year 2 goes a lot better for them.

I think Jones would be a lot better but they were training him to play one position (ILB/S hybrid) and are having him playing pure safety. Just another of Capers long list of playing people out of position.

King showed me enough that I think he is going to be really good. He just needs to get healthy.

I beat this drum a lot, but the sentiment is the same: Eliot Wolf is part of the machine...the same machine that is generating the draft picks and player personnel moves we're all panning in this thread. The buck absolutely stops with TT and you can't be in the GM position unless you want that responsibility. But the obvious assumption is that Wolf's talking to TT as much as any other exec in the chain when it comes to player moves.

http://www.packers.com/team/staff/eliot-wolf/554e5cf2-a949-4cb5-8d85-11e...

Don't get me wrong, I certainly expect that the next Packers GM is in house, and I pray that he'll be a rock star. But let's not discount what the current evidence has to say.

Agree....this love affair of Eliot Wolf is over the top. None of us have any idea whether he'd be good or bad as an actual GM. The love affair is that his last name is Wolf, and that's the entire basis for the man crush that's continually cited.

Gutenkust, Ball, or God forbid someone from the outside could be prove to be a better bet.....but we'll never know until Ted retires, and I'm guessing it doesn't happen as soon as many would like.

Eliot (one L, one T) is the main reason the Packers uncharacteristically "splurged" in free agency this off-season.
Ahmad Brooks, Jahri Evans, Crazy Marty B, and Lance Kendricks.....

Now all of a sudden our playoff streak ends. Hopefully that doesn't mean we're not going to add anymore pieces.
Marty B was a mistake right from the beginning. Evans has worked out. Brooks I'd give that move about a 'C'...somehow he became not durable all if a sudden.
Kendricks has disappointed me.

RT is a new need as Bulaga is breaking down, & Spriggs is awful.

OLB, CB, OLB, TE, WR....

I'm sadder the more I look into this roster....

If you're concerned that re-signing Adams will prevent the Packers from adding quality players at other positions, why not just cut Nelson and/or Cobb? Paying two players who are far less productive and older, particularly Nelson, is way more prohibitive than paying a player entering the prime of his career. The Packers are smart with their money and the salary cap is only going up every year, so I wouldn't worry too much about Adams' new contract preventing them from adding more talent. Remember, Clay Matthews also comes off the books after 2018 and he's another option to be cut this offseason to open up some money. Between him, Nelson and Cobb, that's three of the Packers' four highest cap hits coming off the books in a year (if they don't rework the deals or cut them beforehand).

You mention the Packers "don't need more offensive weapons." Huh? Green Bay has been overly reliant on Rodgers to make magic happen the past three years instead of running a coherent offense like they did when Driver, Jennings and Jones were still around. They needed Richard Rodgers to split out wide late against Carolina for cripes' sake. Cobb still has some juice when he actually gets the ball in his hand but Nelson is clearly on his last legs. Adams is really the only big-play receiving weapon the Packers have right now.

You mention Rodgers is 34. The Packers don't have any of their perimeter guys signed after 2018, so do you really want to spend a year or two trying to develop an entirely new receiving core as Rodgers' career winds down?

Well said. At this point Adams is the only proven difference maker. The rest are merely good. In Jordy’s case he is on the back side of his potential.

Difference makers win titles if surrounded with a supporting cast of good players. Good players alone get us to the playoffs. We have Rogers, we have Adams we need a few more difference makers, not one less.

We have a lot of cap tied up in players, Matthews and Nelson, who are no longer consistently elite. I would like to keep them, but not at past prices and not at the cost of an Adams type. Cobb, in my view, is an asset but one who is grossly overpaid.

I think Adams should be signed. However, if TT is still around (I'm sure he will be) he will lose Adams to another team with tons of cap space. I would think that Adams would not sign with GB just because of Rodgers. Noting the concussions, if I were Adams, I would want the maximum amount that any team would pay me.

As for the Pack not needing any offensive weapons, Cory I disagree with you. Jordy might be done (retire), Cobb may be a cap casualty, especially since he has regressed like Jordy when it comes to production. No receiver on the current roster has great speed, except for Trevor Davis, and he hasn't played much other than special teams. Allison has no speed. Michael Clark is an experiment. DeAngelo Yancey, unproven, not quick or fast. Our TE's are below average. So sign Adams if at all possible. Every player in the league is susceptible to concussion at least once a year. Period. That Adams has had three doesn't mean he is a high risk to sign. He may not suffer another for many seasons. No one can know that. But he is a good building block for a new group of WR's the Pack will need starting next season.

And the offensive line needs a few good players added to protect Rodgers, because if we don't, then it isn't going to matter how good of receivers we have if AR isn't given the protection, or is injured again and again.

Davante Adams doesn't have an injury bug, he's been clearly headhunted twice. I wonder if you were around during the Superbowl year because if you were, remember the two concussions Rodgers had that year? He seemed to play pretty well the remainder of that season, as well as every game since then, right? So please, take your supposed journalism and go someplace else.

Thanks for the feedback. First of all, it’s a two-pronged argument based on health history and other needs: i.e, edge rusher and right tackle.

Second of all, clean it up. You’re better than that.

Finally, just because Adams suffered his concussions as a result of headhunting, doesn’t make his injuries any less serious.

Less serious no, but it does differentiate on the basis of likelihood of recurrence.

Perhaps the real story implied by your last comment should have been how teams or players have possibly found a way to end the careers of opponents’ star players, either directly or through intimidation by example? Really, Adams experience is surely a stark example of why the game needs harsh discipline applied without inquiry into motive or regard for reputation for any such hit not clearly incidental in nature if it is to survive.

I've seen people say the offender needs to be out as long as the player they hit. I think that is wrong. It needs to be longer.

Stare at the grass when you make contact with a defenseless player and you're sitting one quarter of the season. Do it again, it's half the season. Do it a third, it's forever. Eyes up. See what you're hitting all the way through contact. If you can't do that, you can't play in the NFL.

Well, Cory that is trully fresh view of Packers "problems"...

I will not agree or disagree with you. I believe your view is valid as any other is... It might be right move, that what you suggest.

I know that many people here thinks I'm supporting Dom Capers. I'm not. I just want to take right perspective when I discuissing someone's job. It is the easiest way to point finger to the front man and ask for his head. But, will that solve the issue?

Maybe the way I see the situation has few fans here, but here it is:
Coaching staff - keep MM, find new OC, new DC and maybe new assistent(s)... I will try to get some college offensive mind for OC and some experienced DC to replace Dom. I still think Dom posses huge knowledge regarding football and I would offer him consultant position (if he will take it).
My first choice was Marvin Lewis, but Since 61 gave me very good argument against him. He is 4-3 D coach, and Packers are 3-4 team (available players). So, some D coach with NFL expewrience in DC position. And, of course, 3 characters are out of debate: 2 Ryans and Schwartz, but Schwartz is anyhow on position with Eagles...
Players: I would make some serious rebuilding.
I will keep on offense Aaron Rodgers, of course, and Brett Hundley, but not under all circumstances. Sorry Joe, but I think you should look your chance somewhere else.
WR: I will sign Davante Adams (if possible), but I will ask Jordy and Randall to accept pay cut. In Jordy's situation give him a year more for less money per year. If he will refuse I will try to trade him or cut him. Same with Randall. Btw we have bigger and younger Randall on the team already. I will try to use Geronimo, Davis, Clark and Yancey and put them in the mix with few new draft and UDFA faces. At the beginning of the season Packers need to have clear situation who is who in receiving team...
RB - Ty Montgomery should be send back to the WR room/mix, and Packers should build their future on Williams/Jones combo. Also, I would like to see what Mays can offer during the last 2 games this season. bring additional 1 - 2 RB to the mix and pick 3 at the beggining of the nes season...
TE - I will keep both TE and try to draft one in 2nd/3rd round. Check what you have on PS and add few bodies for TC....
OL - keep exisitng players, pick the best at RT (by my opinion Kyle Murphy) and cut the balast... Reinforce OL with late round picks or UDFA

D:
DL - by my opinion Packers should keep all the players they have now as some players starts to show serious upgrade (Clark, Lowry), or some of them can be rotational players like Dial or shine in 2nd year (M. Adams). Add few new UDFA bodies or late draft picks to the mix and pick the best...
LB/OLB - I will like to see more on Chris Odom. Vince Biegel, CM, Perry should stay and Brooks should be kept if he accepts vet min. Fackrell mostly for ST... Hope Packers can find pass rusher in the 1st round of the draft... That is neccesity. Add new bodies to the mix and see where is Gilbert with his improvement...
LB/ILB - keep all of them (3) and try to sneak one in 3rd/4th round of the draft...
CB - I think Packers should try to find another CB 2nd/3rd round and keep all of them (or most of them) for training camp. I'm very interesting to see what Herb Waters can do for Packers...
S - I think that group is very well filled and I will not pay much attention to the group except some Woodson/Collins type of player would be available...
K and P are set (hopefuly), as well as Jeff Janis as star on ST...

This is how I see the situation...

Sorry for bad English...

Jordy Nelson just may solve the problem by retiring in the off-season or re-structuring his contract.
The Packers will re-sign Davonte Adams and Corey Linsley, they are without question Ted Thomson's two top priorities. With that said they need to:
*Shore up the Offensive Line, it was painfully obvious that without Rodgers this team is sunk, protect the man.
*Switch Montgomery back to WR and groom him to the Randall Cobb role as a big slot WR, he's not a RB.
*Draft the best blocking TE out there, the Packers never seem to use TE's down the seam anyway, get one that can block, the guys they have now can't
*Draft another RB, the tandem of Williams/Jones looks good but the sample size is too small, add another to the stable, preferably another pass-catching weapon.
*Trade Clinton Dix, he has regressed badly and doesn't seem interested in being a leader or playing Defense, the Packers have plenty of hungry backups at Safety
*Pass Rushers and an Offensive lineman should be high priorities in this draft for the Pack
*Also Re-sign Burnett and House, they will re-sign at very reasonable rates, neither is great but they are OK as veteran leaders on a Defense that is void of this
*FIRE DOM CAPERS!! A young, energetic D. C. who will simplify this Defense and let these young guys play!
At ease, that is all

I don't agree with you or Grot. First you have Mathews Contract running out. Second you have Perry always hurt. You won't have a defense that can rush. Whats the back-up plan for the defense? Failure ? You must draft Pass rushers! Asking players to take cuts, so another can be signed is BS. Players play for the money more, than the team now. Pay Cuts flew away with Hawk. Nelson and Cobb are not near retirement. If Adams wants the money, he needs to find it somewhere else.

Matthews contract has, for all intents and purposes, run out. There's no cap hit to cut him after the season, and he's not worth his cap number for 2018. I think he's very likely to be in GB next season for the reasons you cite, but he won't be playing under his current deal.

I have no problem with not signing Adams provided that Ted goes out and gets another one. Will any quality WRs be available in FA or the draft?

Stick a fork in Jordy and Cobb, and the other WRs on the team seem like typical TT “projects.” AR needs someone to throw to, doesn’t he?

I agree with this article.
You just can't take the chance on another big money receiver, particularly with a concussion history.
He's a good receiver, but not a game breaking receiver.
17 is more of a possession receiver than anything else.
Not a huge number of plays downfield, and lacking game-breaking speed.
I'd spend the money on a high profile replacement for Capers, and a defensive pass rushing free agent, if you can find one.
Defense needs to be the priority from coaching, to an influx of higher level talent.
The offense will be good enough without another 10 million dollar receiver. You already have two of them.

I would resign Adams because he has become what the Packers claim to be about. A draft and develop team. He may command a big contract but that doesn't mean all of the money is guaranteed. The concern over his concussion history can be handled during the contract negotiations. Regardless, the Packers could be outbid unless they protect him as their franchise player for 2018.

If the Packers keep Adams they could look for a game break type receiver in the draft and a TE. If they lose Adams they need to rebuild the entire receiving corps because Jordy and Cobb are short timers at best, plus we still need a TE.

As for the defense, FIRE CAPERS and his staff except for, possibly Mike Trgovac. He could be considered for DC since he has DC experience. I'm not sure he's the answer but he could be considered. If not chuck him too. Then draft a CB to play opposite King and sign an experienced FA CB. Find a pass rusher either via the draft or FA or both.

Whoever is the GM spend the cap$$$. We saved $16 MM this season and now we're on the outside looking in for the playoffs.
Way to go TT and not help the team. Thanks, Since '61

"As for the defense, FIRE CAPERS and his staff except for, possibly Mike Trgovac. He could be considered for DC since he has DC experience."

The question is: does Trgovac look good because he has good players working on the DL or is he making the DL better? The DL has improved with new players, and also since Jerry Montgomery came on board as DL assistant.

Trgovac had a good run with Carolina as a DC, but I suspect that if Capers goes, he won't be considered for DC (that's just my hunch). I think he would be the natural for an interim DC if they had the gumption to remove Capers and you never know with MM calling the shots if he'd stay in house that way. Still, if I'm going to make that move on Capers, I put all assistants on notice, hire my DC, and work with him to make over the defensive staff.

Myself I would rather go after either a more proven DC or a young and upcoming type of coach.

Rex Ryan is a guy that I think could get a lot out of the players we have. I don't see that happening,

Todd Bowles is a guy that may come available. He would be another good good Defensive Coordinator.

If Fox gets released, perhaps Fangio would be released. Though he maybe a head coaching candidate. But he would be a great D coordinator to bring in.

I cringe at Rex Ryan, but at least these are names being offered rather than a stock "Fire Capers!" comment.

TGR gave me some crap for bringing up Bowles, but he was good in his capacity as DC prior to becoming HC with the Jets. He had a lot of good pieces to work with in Arizona, though.

A lot of people look at what the person did as a head coach and think they aren't worthy of being a DC. In all honesty, some of these guys are better DC then Head coaches. When they can solely focus on one area of the team vs the entire team.
Bowles might be one. Marvin Lewis might be another.

Rex Ryan, while I don't necessarily like him, he can do one thing. And that is turn a defense around.

If they went to the college ranks a guy that I think would be great is Dave Aranda. He did a tremendous job of building up a Badgers defense. He spent a lot of time working with Capers, so he runs a similar style of defense. The 3/4 defense is fine. I think they need someone else to come in and put the players in the best positions available. I think Aranda could be that guy.
Also an area that Capers has really struggled with is defending the read options and offenses with motion in them. An area that college's have adapted to.

I still can't believe when I'm watching b y r d catch the ball in the back of the end zone and land on his rear end I watched the play over and over again and I'm watching to see he is in bounds then all of a sudden after the maybe 10th time that I'm watching the play I'm looking at HaHa Clinton-Dix just standing there and is the guy is going down bobbling the ball I'm thinking to myself why isn't HaHa Clinton-Dix throwing his entire body to knock everybody in the ball out of bounds this is supposed to be pure Instinct what was he waiting to do catch the ball I don't understand this is supposed to be taught by Darren Perry the defensive back coach these are the little things that I'm telling you people that are not being taught it was no different than a few weeks ago when we play Tampa Bay and Jamison Winston threw a ball and he hurt his ankle when the Green Bay Packer quarterbacks are taught how to jump and throw the ball not even maybe 10 plays later Jamison Winston does the exact same thing and hurts his ankle again and you wonder why we are losing games why we have injuries because they are not taught the details all the Packers do is just line up properly and I don't even know if they do that and Dom Capers is just an x-and-o coach one year we have ankle injuries and next year we have groin injuries it's always the same type of injuries every year. We need coaches that are going to teach his players properly and they must understand when they make a mistake someone will get hurt just like when Aaron Rodgers threw that interception now the receivers have to become the defense and boom I'll goes Davante Adams because of a cheap shot when the interception should have never happened should have never happened the devil is in the details guys we need a new defensive coordinator now because we don't know if we're going to run a 4-3 or 3-4 the change needs to be right now we could have already been implementing a new defense already and then been able to get ready for free agency and the draft to get those things moving but again we just sit around like we have all the time in the world and nobody likes a fire under these people I mean it's like ridiculous I mean look who is going to be going to the Super Bowl the LA Rams possibly the Minnesota Vikings possibly the New Orleans Saints possibly Carolina Panthers possibly I mean these teams were not even in our minds that they were going to go to the Superbowl every year we're pick to go to the Superbowl and we don't there is a problem people and we keep making excuses all the time it's got to stop now!

Before you write sprinkle a few punctuation marks in the text box and then try to write in between them. You take up a lot of space here with posts that make no sense and that don't contribute anything to the conversation.
Maybe English is your second or third language. Thanks, Since '61

It's sad that the Saints have the 7th ranked defense when they sucked years ago. They used gave up so many points and we didn't do anything with our defensive coordinator and we're still at the bottom of the barrel in the def. rankiings and look the Saints may even go to the Superbowl this year it's going to be close but we just dont make any changes in this organization and we expect something different mind blowing. Imagine just imagine the Green Bay Packers with a solid defense and having Aaron Rodgers as quarterback oh man we would be awesome but every year our defense is the Achilles heel.

Hot take corner once again comes through with the best drivel on the internet. Which Packers skill player impresses you other than Adams? You probably run a 5.5 40 and you still are faster than Richard Rodgers or Jordy Nelson or Geronimo Allison. Was it Allison's game losing fumble in replace of Adams that got you so hyped? Is it Randall Cobb who finally just went over 10 yards per catch this year? Surely there must be a great deep threat on this team that is set at the skill positions Sounds like a team not in need of any skill positions guys. They got it covered. Let me go check with Danny Traner to see what he thinks.

If you think Barclay is better than Spriggs you've lost your last marble.

We need a NT that can penetrate to put between Clark and Daniels. That will collapse pockets and draw blockers away from our OLBs.

If I was GM I would sign Adams. Let Nelson go. He was looking for flags more than focusing on catching balls. I would also of course fire Capers and take HaHa with him. Go to a 4-3 ,get rid of some of the high paid non- pressureing OLBs and Draft DL. I've been saying this for years but you have to have more than 2 DL on the LOS to generate pressure long term and with less injuries.

Regardless of who is coordinating etc... HaHa gives up, doesn't want to tackle and just displays an overall lack of effort...get rid of him.

Then I'd have a talk with MM....your running the ball well for the last few games, your QB comes back from a major injury, then you panic when your only one touchdown behind and totally give up on the run and check downs....just dumb.

We are talking about a team that is going to have 43 million in cap room next year and can free up another 9 million by cutting Randall Cobb. That gives them 52 million in cap room.

Personally, I'm sick of this team sitting on 10+ million in cap space every season while letting players like Lang, Hyde, etc, walk and doing next to nothing in the FA market.

Based on team need, talent and cap space It's beyond idiotic to not re-sign Adams, a 24 year old, legit #1 WR. They can easily give him a 5/75 mil deal and have plenty of cap space to bring back Linsley and Burnett and go sign a veteran Edge defender/pass rusher.

HHCD is such an enigma, of all the players outside of Rodgers, he was the one I was the most excited about coming into the season. Not only does he not sacrifice his body in any situations, watch his film against the run, particularly the long one against Tampa. He is just backpedaling side to side all the way to the goal line!!! If that is what being taught then we need some serious coaching changes, not just Capers.

Hard to judge HHCD because I have so many questions about the scheme. Look how marginal Hyde and Hayward proved to not have been when let loose in different schemes.

We need a new DC who can coax the talent out of the next Haywards and Hydes while they are still in Green Bay.

Hyde and Heyward didn't shy away from contact. HAHA seemed really soft in coverage and tackling. i would look to trade him....they have some young hard hitting guys that need to see the field.

Hyde didn't, but Hayward didn't want anything to do with a big RB or receiver. He got hurt every time he had hard contact.

At any rate the coaches apparently thought Hyde was a much better tackler and that is one of the reasons Hyde always got more snaps than Hayward.

Yes we have a cap. But Adams is going to want Guaranteed money,Perks, Loop holes. No Matter what! And regardless, he's got an agent. So he's going to bitch. So Adams can get his bonus money . Which will be in the contracts. So as much as we have caps. Adams and his agent, still will GET WHATS BEST for Adams. ( $$$$$$$) Let me Say GUARANTEED Again! But what does Adams Guarantee the Packers? We don't have a crystal ball. Goals always fall short. Money is always in demand! Players always think their better than what they are. It's business. And Adams can take his business elsewhere.

Guys that want to open up the books for Adams and give him a blank check, ask yourself if you've seen Nick Perry the last couple of games? I recall we signed him to a big buck contract last year, but he's been MIA, so not sure he's still on the team. Might be on a milk-carton at Pick 'N Save, I'll check.

By that rationale, no player is ever worth a second contract.

so you must have been very happy when we let Hyde and Heyward and Tretter go last year rather than paying them? we could have used every one of them this year!

Are we in a Rebuild? People want Nelson and Cobb cut. Mathews and Bulaga- gone. (Off the books.) Capers gone! This will change the defense from a 3-4-4. If were in a rebuild. Your looking at 4 years down the line again. The length of Adam's new contract. Rebuilding means loses. Who is going to take their place? Do you pay Adams in a rebuild? The Vikings ,Bears , and Lions are getting stronger. A-Rod may get hurt. What happens if A-Rod wants out? (He'll want a ring) The next GM may have to sign Free Agents. Seems to me that Adams new contract will hurt the rebuilding process. After this season, thats what were IN.
