Cory's Corner: No Time To Be Content

Brian Gutekunst and Russ Ball have been unsung heroes this offseason.

You don’t have to like everything that the Packers have done this offseason.

Just know that Green Bay’s front office has done a lot.

As of January, the Packers were $40 million over the salary cap with a lot of work to do.

Preston Smith parlayed his 25 sacks the last three years into a four-year, $52.5 million extension to stay in Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers inked a three-year, $150.8 million deal to keep the four-time MVP in Titletown. Inside linebacker De’Vondre Campbell was rewarded for being one of the best linebackers in the game with a five-year, $50 million deal. Cornerback Rasul Douglas proved that he can be a regular contributor in this league and the Packers believed it too with a three-year, $21 million deal. And last, but not least, tight end Robert Tonyan is back on a one-year, $3.75 million deal.

Every single one of those moves happened in the month of March. While you were all busy filling out brackets, general manager Brian Gutekunst and director of football operations Russ Ball were hard at work.

If you want to criticize them for trading the best receiver in football, that’s fair. However, I would argue that the Packers came out pretty good in that trade. The Packers got a first rounder and a second rounder in 2022 — a draft that is ripe with plenty of NFL-ready receivers.

“There were some dominoes that were important to us that, if we continued down the road we were, it was going to be difficult to put the team we wanted to put around Aaron (Rodgers) and everybody, so I think two different situations,” said Gutekunst from the NFL owners’ meetings.

None of this is easy because there are legions of people like us that love to second guess just about everything.

Look, the Packers have gone 39-10 in the last three years but what do they have to show for it? Three division titles from a division that’s pretty flimsy to begin with, two NFC title game losses and a NFC Divisional Playoff Game loss.

That’s why I like what Gutekunst and Ball did. They knew what they had wasn’t good enough and they knew they needed a change. There is nothing worse than being content with what you have. You have to evolve and grow as an organization.

“I will lead in my own personality and probably a little bit more aggressive in certain areas,” said Gutekunst at his introductory press conference on Jan. 8, 2018. “I don't think we will leave any stone unturned as far as every avenue of player acquisition.”

The Adams trade was aggressive, there’s no way around that. But I would rather have a general manager that is aggressive than one that is perpetually fine with what he has. I want people in the front office that are always looking for ways to get better.

That is what is going on right now at 1265 Lombardi Ave. Gutekunst is scouring depth charts and looking for possible trade partners to add a veteran receiver and looking at college tape to add a rookie wideout. Packers coach Matt LaFleur has said that he wants someone to take the top off of a defense. Gutekunst has had a draft day trade every year since he started as the Packers general manager in 2018.

And even if Gutekunst bucks the trend and stays put at 22 and 28 in the first round, North Dakota State’s Christian Watson fits that requirement for size (6-foot-4), speed (4.36 40-yard dash) and versatility by playing running back and special teams as well as wide receiver. Drafting Watson at either of those two spots would give the Packers another shot at another playmaker.

The work that Gutekunst and Ball have done to assemble a roster while magically getting it under the salary cap is nothing short of amazing. It shows that the front office is certainly all-in and that regular season wins just aren’t good enough.

It wasn’t magic or genius that got them under the salary cap, they just used the Mastercard to pay off the Visa. That doesn’t take a magician or a genius. When the bill comes due and the house of cards crashes down, I imagine Russ will be retired in Boca and Brian will have a new higher paying job in Jacksonville or Houston. Ah, the American dream!

It was genius actually.
No one I read had the slightest clue they would trade Davante. But they got a lot for him and spared the future cap.
Rodgers is just temporary. Two years of enjoyable winning at least. Then most of his debt is gone.
As long as revenue is up in NFL, debt is safe if your smart. Just like the debt you have on your house (in a good neighborhood). NOT like the government printing money.
Keeping great players or getting something from them when they leave is how every team in the league does it. The best teams use genius.
Dont mistake the health of the NFL for irresponsibility.
Gute and Russ have been Masterful!!!

It wasnt genius. They had to restructure a ton of contracts to get under the cap which just pushes more money into the future, not just Rodgers' contract. And the sad reality of restructuring contracts is it basically guarantees that player will be gone the following year. Just look at some of the cap hits for next year. Bakhtiari? 30 mil. Aaron Jones? 20 mil. Kenny Clark? 24 mil. Amos counts for over 7 mil in 2024 when hes not even under contract anymore. The hoops they jumped through to give Rodgers the ivory tower is going to cost them elite players real soon. And all of it couldve been avoided if they had just made better decisions. If they made the right move and traded Rodgers, none of those restructures happen. All self inflicted wounds. And now theyre having a hard time resigning Jaire. Elgton's up for a monster contract. Same with Gary the following year. Actions have consequences.

I’m thinking the back office did a great job. Gutsey wanted 2 more years where the Packers are considered contenders for the SB and they delivered Rodgers and much of the talent to make it happen.Depending on many factors, could be contenders while in CAP hell.

So yeah they did their job, now the talent acquisition to fill in the rest of the roster has to happen and that will extend into TC.

No, because they sold future for that.

That is known technique, rarely successful. Mostly it ends with bankruptcy, in NFL I suppose it will end with irrelevance.

As it was said, nothing magic. Except if you believe in stories like movie "Draft Day".

The difference is that they are getting something out of it. 1-1 in the Super Bowl with the operative word being 'in' which is more than what the Packers do with their salary cap 'all-in' moves. Will the Rams pay for it later, sure, but the result will make it easier to accept when the payment comes due. The Packers will feel every bit of the woe unless they actually win or at least, at the very least, get in a SB or two.

Stafford's cap number is $13.5M and new WR Allen Robinson's is just $4.3M. They traded Robert Woods. I am guessing that Wagner's cap number will be $7M or less.

Even so, they will have to restructure one or more of Donald, Ramsey, Kupp, and/or Havenstein and Higbee.

Yeah its cool in the short term, but the price has to be paid eventually. Wait till next year when 4 or 5 of the best players on the team are cut or traded because they're $80 million over the cap. Aaron Jones with his $20 mil cap hit is gone. Kenny Clark with his $24 mil cap hit is gone. Bakh with his $29 mil cap is hit is gone too if not sooner. Dont be surprised if he's released post-June 1st this year so they can spread out the dead cap hit over this year and next year. Adrian Amos is definitely gone next year too. But they also have to pay Jaire and Elgton Jenkins huge money and Gary/Dillon are going to want big money the year after that when Rodgers' contract really starts to explode. Their cap is in terrible shape and they're going to pay dearly for it.

They won a super bowl. It is already worth it.

Rams can generate quite a bit of cap space if they want to for 2022. Next year (2023) is also a year when they can generate cap space. Their free agents don't look too terrible. Draft picks might catch up more quickly than the cap itself.

There is No better time than the present. Stay on Top. And with all the doom and Gloom over the cap Hell. Good job, Well done! The next step is replacement. Watson works for me. The other WR who can take the top of the Defense off; is Jalen Tolbert. These two guys together: would be a threat the Packers haven't had since they won the Super-bowl. Replacement just doesn't work in this draft. Game changers do.

I'd have to agree with you, Cory. We've all lived through years and years of seasons where Ted Thompson only made rare dips into the FA pool.

While he did make some big splashes with Woodson, Pickett and Peppers, in general, it still felt like he left way too many opportunities on the table and relied too heavily on the draft -- especially even after some of those high draft picks like Datone Jones and Nick Perry never panned out.

I'm pleased with how the off-season has gone. I was one on here calling to trade Rodgers and sell high for a massive haul -- Denver I think would've done it. While that did not come to fruition, I'm also not upset with the front office for the Adams trade, because he already refused to play on the tag and basically had his mind made up to want to play for Oakland.

So while they matched the Raiders offer, I think it was more so to manage people's perceptions that they weren't going to roll over and let him walk. The offer to me, was mostly symbolic, while they full well knew Adams wanted out.

No matter how bad any situation is, there is always some good that will come out of it. Despite losing Adams, it cleared $20M of cap space and quickly enabled the signings of Douglas and Tonyan. I still can't believe Campbell is back. So the defense is largely intact, it just needs more depth at the CB position with Sullivan and King gone, and some DT help for Kenny in the draft would be nice (I think Jarran Reed is just a guy, but hope I'm wrong).

It coulda been a grand slam, slam dunk, perfect 10 off-season if Gutey woulda pulled the trigger for the Denver haul by trading AR.

Lets see where things go with this year's roster and where the pigeons land over the next 3 years with the cap.

Murphy saying goodbye at the beginning of the smoke and rubble, i don't have a lot of faith in the in-house replacement he is grooming to be Harlan-like. I see this guy as trying to take the reins from MM and directing the football operations guys just like Howdy has done.

Sigh...

I would have preferred the "10" offseason myself JB27. The Packers would not have been as good in 2022 or 2023 as a team with Rodgers, but I believe the post Rodgers future would have been much, much brighter. Murphy will ride into the sunset a winner and the Packers fans will be the losers. I just hope it won't be a return to the 70's and 80's - that was much too long.

I truly believe there's an argument to be made that the team overall would've been better without 12. Hear me out for a minute. They would be almost guaranteed to lose more regular season games, but with their sorry division, they would still be heavy favorites to win the division. Losing 12 would basically force this offense to change identities into a more physical run-based team. This would actually allow them to play to their cold weather home field advantage and give them a much better chance to win against the physical teams like the 49ers. In summary, the offense would take a step back in overall production and efficiency, but would give this team the change in identity that this roster has been built for- to become a team that can win the physical slugfests that they always lose come January. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

Even without Rodgers, the Packers have a far better roster and coaching staff than the Vikings do. And people severely underrate Love. His game against the Chiefs was ugly at times, but he got hot in the 4th qtr and actually outplayed Mahomes in KC. Chiefs ended up with the #8 scoring defense in the NFL. And against the Lions, he erased the double digit deficit he inherited to take the lead with less than 5 minutes left in the 4th qtr only for the 2nd and 3rd string defense to blow it. He shouldve won that game and he did it with backups. This team would be just fine without Rodgers and would continue getting better as Love improves and the team grows into its new identity.

RTS: I'm having a hard time convincing myself that the Pack would be better in 2022 without Rodgers simply because I don't know what the Packers have in Love and even if he turns out great, he would still have a steep "rookie" learning curve in 2022. However if you want to make your case for 2023, I'm on board. All those draft choices plus a developing Jordan Love sounded very good to me!

Love wont even have to be great for the team to be better overall without 12. The team Gutekunst and Lafleur have been trying to build is a team that isnt reliant on elite qb play to win by running the ball and playing defense. They already have the players to do it but as long as 12 is under center it will be a soft pass happy offense. Its more about addition by subtraction than it is about Love.

Haha yeah right that the packers would be better without Rodgers, Love isn’t ready and probably will never be.. Both you guys worrying about going back to the 70’s-80’s would be doing just that in your perfect “10” bs..Rodgers is a proven mvp qb that’s worth way more than lottery draft resources, because great qbs just grow on trees right ? Just draft one it’ll be all good, ask the bears how they’ve been doing 20 plus years ha..

I'm old enough to remember "fans" saying the same thing about Rodgers. Most Packer "fans" didnt want him. Some even hated him. Almost none believed in him. There were fire ted thompson websites just for drafting him. There was demands to trade him for Randy Moss in 2007 because mUh ReCeIvErS. In the lead up to the 2008 season, fans just like you were throwing around the "return to the 70s and 80s" Jim Jones-style fear propaganda. The sky was falling in Titletown. And then this crazy thing happened. Rodgers turned out to be amazing and then those same "fans" who didnt even want him were first in line to buy his jersey. And those same "fans" who hate Love now will be wearing his jersey soon enough.

Perspective is everything. If you an "all-in" type of fan, Gute has made all the right moves to keep the Packers in contention for the next 2-3 years. If you have a longer term perspective, all of the void years on player's contracts (particularly the overhang after Rodger's three year deal is done) are going to provide a crash landing for the start of the post Rodgers era. And please don't tell me the expanding cap will bail the Packers out. The Packers are going to be stuck with a bunch of dead money under any circumstances and a team that didn't engage in void years will have more cap space at their competitive disposal. That dead money will always put the Packers at a competitive disadvantage versus more conservative teams no matter what the cap is.

So short term versus long term - what's your preference?

I do have some hope that with good drafting GB can re-sign their own and keep the team competitive as other teams gain cap and work the FA market.

If the drafts over the next 2-3 years are bad, the GBP will be in a world of hurt going forward.

There is a sliver of a window for sunshine, and I hope GB slides through it. Gutey has been a pretty good talent evaluator thus far and he is the only horse we have to ride, so...

Well Guam, I say this is the situation you put yourself in when you draft and acquire top talent. The Packers have top talent at so many positions they have no choice but to get in cap trouble trying to keep the guys they have. It's just a shame they didn't beat Tampa last year as I thought that team was playing better at the end than this past season.

Thats not entirely true. While they have drafted well, they also spent a ton of money on Z smith, P Smith, B Turner, and A Amos. Over $200 million. And instead of getting out from under those big contracts, they kept restructuring and pushing money to the future. Pack are paying Zadarius a lot of money this year to play for the Vikings (puke). And they'll be paying Amos alnost $8 million in 2024 when hes no longer on the team. Terrible cap management. And instead of getting out from under this albatross, they've allowed themselves to sink even deeper.

Watson looks like real deal but is not one of the top receivers in the draft. A good one yes but while tall and fast he played against poor competition. He also isnt a great route runner, or have ability to open his hips and smoothly change direction. He is more like MVS as in straight ahead speed. Interesting how a certain player becomes the favorite on here, so everyone keeps repeating it. Would I like him on the Packers? Absolutely but probably with a move up inside top 40 in round 2, which is where I think he will go. Maybe inside top 4 to 6 picks in round 2.

You draftnics want a couple of sleepers? How about a faster Jordy Nelson who is better than Watson and no one talks about him? How many of you have even heard of Alex Pierce? 6'2 & 3/4" and 208 lbs with 4.3 speed. Faster than Watson! Great player and take him over Watson.

Than a favorite of mine who will be an absolute steal late 2nd round or even 3rd round only because he is small at 5' 8" 170 lbs with 4.2 speed. Calvin Austin is a water bug guy with crazy Tyrek Hill talent. Play in slot or outside to take top off. Can change direction on a dime and has 3 or 4 speeds leaving everyone in dust. Packers have never had a player with this skill set and would be so fun to watch him deployed within MLF's offense.

Highly recommend fans check these two players out on YouTube.

My favorite though is Jameson William's. He is the 'one' receiver in the draft that stands head and shoulders above the others. The game changer! The guy defenses will fear. He is the Chase or Jefferson in the draft. I'd recommend Packers do whatever they can to secure him injury or not. I would then try to get someone like Cedric or Calvin later in round 2 or 3. The other WR I am very high on is Jahan Dotson. Little smaller than ideal who is dynamic! Also can throw ball very well that would keep defenses on their toes.

My main point is don't fixate on Watson! There are better WR's and a lot of talent this year at WR's. Watson is one of many. He has certain skills and yes he would replace MVS, but why not do better?

I'm not much of a draftnik Knock, but I second your choice of Williams. I don't think Olave or Wilson will fall to #22, but Williams might due to his injury and I would grab him in a heartbeat. The half season he may miss due to recovery is nothing compared to having a player of his quality over the next several years.

Guam,
Thanks!

Do yourself a favor and watch those four WR's on YouTube and give your thoughts about them. You will love these guys.

Problem with Watson is you see him wide open down field catching bombs for TD's against inferior defenders. He is a good player but how will that talent translate to the NFL? There will be a lot of adjustment needed and can Pack afford to wait and hope?

I was watching highlight reels lte last night and thought the same thing about Watson. ND is turning out some good players but they ain’t no Crimson Tide. Wide open receiver usually just means blown coverage. I want to see the guy with a corner pasted on him still making the catch then turning on a gear that no one else on the field has missing tackles left and right. I’m also hoping Williams falls to us or we even move up for him injury or no. Just as long as it doesn’t cost us too much draft capital.

I'm not fixated on Watson. He's compared to mega tron, Right now. With 14 teams needing Wr. I don't believe Watson is a reach. I think Williams is good. But the speed he has is pick up speed. Know the difference? And with that repaired knee. Are you sure he can run that fast in the freezing cold? The two deep threats to spread the Defense are Watson and Tolbert. (Getting off the LOS is the concern with Tolbert.) He was rated #5 in college For catching the deep ball. Both can play outside! The Slot isn't the need.

Lol... I've been touting Alec Pierce for over a month... Where you been? ; P

My favorite unheralded WR is Danny Gray. 6' 2" 200 lbs., can catch and return kicks, and can fly.

Others like Velus Jones Jr. He's 6' 0" 190 lbs. I like him too.

I also like Taquan Thornton, but he's rail thin at 6' 2" 177 lbs.

Even if we draft Jameson Williams, we'll have to draft at least two more WRs. Jameson would be a good pick, if he were healthy and ready to play. He'll be a good pick at #22, but he won't be able to contribute much this year, if at all.

Any other year, I think JWill might be on Gutey's radar, but this year it is a little more imperative we get guys who can contribute right away. If Gutey were to draft JWill at 22, I think he would take Burks or Watson at 28 to ensure we have a top notch guy ready when the season starts.

I completely agree if they take Jameson at 22, or with move up to get him they are going to have to use the 28, or using other draft capital to move up to beginning of 2nd round to select a WR.

No, I haven't seen the video. I'm actually kind of hoping someone drafts him before 22 so Gutey doesn't have to make the decision. I'm hoping someone else falls to 22 that Gutey just can't say no to. IDK who that might be, but I would love for Jordan Davis to fall to 22.

Or Devin Lloyd, Trevor Penning, Jermaine Johnson II, or Trent McDuffie. Getting closer to finding out who it will be though.

Burks plays faster than his 40 time would suggest. Definitely looks like more of a possession type of receiver though. Lines up mostly out of the slot . As the teams only real weapon, he was constantly double teamed and still produced. I came away feeling better about him after watching his film.

Careful getting sucked into the Draft Industry hype machine. It can happen to the best of us, and has happened to me plenty of times over the decades.

Potential R1? Yes. Aren't they all? R2? Still an over-draft bottom of the round at #59, quite honestly. He doesn't even make a list of Top 10 WRs... (#18 Athlon/#13 Ourlads)

Yet, Christian Watson is the #8 most frequently visited player page in recent weeks. Watson doesn't even make Athlon's Top 100, and he's ranked #74 in Ourlads Top 200, two of the best, most time tested value sources.

Just sayin': "Careful. Careful. Careful. Careful..."

Carry on..

Concerning the trade, I think it was a good thing and had to be done. Don't get me wrong, I think Devante Adams is a great WR and guy, although maybe a little over rated because of who is throwing to him. But the Packer offense, mainly Rodgers, was too focused on getting the ball to Adams despite there being other options that were open. You could see it in the film from the playoff game where Aaron throws into double or tight coverage when guys like Tyler Davis were standing alone wide open and our QB has tunnel vision with Adams. I know Davis is not a great player at this point but when the Defense is giving you an easy completion for sure yardage, you take it. Now Aaron will be forced to scan the field for the best option and not just automatically zone in on one player. Defenses were double covering him a high percentage of the time and now with whomever they pick up, they will be left guessing because our offense wont be so predictable as it was when you knew Adams was getting the ball early and often.

Over the years I have quit getting hyped about certain players as the Packer ‘s draft always seems to play out much differently than I would have expected.

The last few years I have started playing with a draft simulator, without trades, and have gotten some drafts I felt would really help the Pack. Then the actual draft comes and is not even close to mine. Since I don’t watch college ball I guess that’s to be expected

I would love to go to the draft one time just to feel the energy of the crowd and welcome the new Packers

Cory, I hope that Brian Gutekunst was lurking to the future, while he was executed orders from above.

Despite I do not like so much void dead cap money, I think highly of Gutekunst. I think he is good evaluator and, what is more important he have capable personel on his team. That second thing is the most important for Packers success now and in the future. I wish if he has his hands free to lead the team.

It seems the staff at CHTV -- which does put out a good product with this blog -- is lacking in strong opinions about the Packers, or is reluctant to express them.
I guess it is possible that the entire staff at CHTV does like just about everything that is being done by the managers and players of the Packers, but that seems unlikely.
Anyway, I'd be glad to hear, for example, about how wonderful is the character of our enigmatic quarterback -- to allay my concerns -- and how wise it was to break the bank in signing him at the risk of burdening the team for years to come.
Indeed, it's not about the staff at CHTV agreeing with me or any other fans, but addressing our concerns and providing compelling viewpoints of their own for and against.
***
If it's a matter of not wanting to offend anyone prominent on the Packers, I don't understand that kind of approach.
Who cares if the executives or coaches or players refuse to speak with a beat reporter or opinion columnist?
As a matter of fairness a journalist reaches out to someone to get their side of the story; but if that someone doesn't want to respond, then the journalist just goes with that story anyway.
So, I'd like to hear from Aaron Rodgers about some of the questions and concerns I have about him on and off the field. I'm guessing there are lots of others who would like to hear his answers, too.
If Rodgers isn't responsive, though, he can't really complain about what we write about him, as long as we're trying to be fair based on the evidence as we know it.
***
I'd feel so much better about the Packers if there is convincing evidence that Rodgers has been acting in good faith as a person of character, and that the front office has not been groveling before him to meet his imperious demands.
I'd be glad to admit I've been wrong if it means that things are truly right with the Packers, instead of dysfunctional.
I'm sad to be so down on the Packers, truly heartbroken in a way. Something I care about deeply is seemingly not only in disarray, but at its core is lacking in integrity.
Please, anyone, alleviate my misery by providing solid reasons to see things differently.
***
As far as the staff at CHTV, I for one would like to hear stronger opinions expressed carefully and sincerely but boldly.
It could elevate this site from very good to excellent and exceptional.
Now, CHTV already may be the best Packers site of its kind available, and in that position may want play it safe by not offering strong opinions -- but it seems some reasonable risk is necessary for the highest of achievements.

I am pretty unhappy with giving AR $50M per year. Normally, I think players should get everything they can, so there is that. Not as down on him on the field as others are. Worse, I think I liked Danica best. Still, maybe he still wants to have children.

I, myself, don't know any of the players, nor do they, or anybody in the front office, accept my telephone calls. So, I have no insight into any of them.

I am rather unhappy that Gute didn't pull the trigger on Parker for a measly third in 2023 while getting Parker and a 5th back this year. Still, it seems fair to wait to see if Gute has something else cooking. Nor did I think waiting to extend Jaire made sense, and now it appears that Xavien Howard just reset the CB market considerably higher - $25M AAV if his agent was not blowing smoke.

OTOH, I liked the contracts signed by Campbell and Douglas. Happy that Henry Black got sent packing, though I gather he had 15 ST tackles. Still, as far as I can tell no other team scooped him up despite his rock-bottom salary.

Edit: I suspect that Gute mishandled Davante Adams. It sounds (but I do not know) that Adams would have signed an extension prior to the 2021 season. I know I was screaming for such an extension and writing how it could be done so as to be close to cap neutral deal for 21 and '22. But then, I may in the minority about not being concerned about Davante-vision. I think great WRs get tons of targets. Period. Never been a fan of Lazard.

Good stuff, TGR, regardless of whether I agree or disagree.
If in this offseason the Packers management was willing to match the offer the Raiders made to Davante, that seems crazy to me; and it seems crazier if they weren't willing to pay a fraction of that amount of that to keep a younger MVS.
I think we've already agreed, TGR, that MVS is likely to break out at this point in his career, more or less. To me, that means he'll likely be at least a productive WR2, possibly a WR1, and possibly even a star WR1.
We've disagreed on Lazard over the years, with me being much more of a fan.
***
As far as our enigmatic quarterback, I would have been open to signing him for big money if he showed evidence of being a better teammate off the field.
One sign of good character would have been him willing to take $40 million per season, which still seems a hefty sum.
Anyway, it's such a big risk to invest big in a quarterback at his age, that I'd only do it if I thought such a player was not only highly talented, but also a great guy to have as part of the organization.
So, I wouldn't have offered Rodgers anything at all, but would have politely said that the Packers are moving on from him.
I had hoped all during this past season that arrogant Rodgers would become more coachable and agreeable, but he seems stubborn in his self-absorbed ways.
I don't understand, TGR, how you seem to be not all that concerned about the character issue regarding Rodgers and how it is likely to affect the Packers negatively.
I think you said I obsess over him, or something like that; but it seems more apt to consider how much he doesn't think about us as fans, apparently, nor his teammates.
***
Have you tried to call any of the players or coaches or execs?
Is it that they won't take your calls, or that you haven't called them?
Perhaps you haven't had much reason to call them in your role at CHTV.
In any case, the staff at CHTV could at least make it known that they are glad to talk to players and coaches and execs who would like to explain their side of the story.
If they don't accept the offer, then the staff at CHTV will form its opinions based on what they know of any given situation.
My suggestion is that, in any case, the staff at CHTV be more daring in expressing its opinions.
Thanks for your response, TGR, with some of your opinions -- which make for good discussion.

Watson blew up the senior bowl according to multiple reports. So much for “he didn’t face top competition”. The CB’s there voted him the top WR. The senior bowl isn’t the end-all-be-all, but he will go higher than many think. PFF has underrated him as have many sites. A lot of them simply have not updated their boards for some time. They usually don’t until closer to the draft. I highly doubt he lasts until 53 or 59. Will he get picked at Packers 28? Possibly. If they think he is good enough and don’t believe they can get him by waiting until 53.

He does not have great hands or at least lacks good technique. His route running is not polished and his route tree embryonic. I really liked him as a later prospect, but he’s not a first or second rounder on anything g but upside. He’s a long shot to contribute much this year.

The Adams trade was a no brainer because Adams would have likely sat out, when you read about it, he told them after the last game he didn't want to be in Green Bay anymore and wanted to be traded to the Raiders...it was a good deal to get something for a player who would have been a problem next season...he did not want to be in Green Bay anymore...

It's amazing how many believed Adams would have stayed in GB had he been made the highest-paid WR in the NFL The last dance tweet was what he wanted and what he got. I'll leave this quote for those who were in denial about Adams to reflect on.

I, for one, didn't know that Davante said publicly that he was determined to leave the Packers (regardless of contract offer, apparently).
Did he give any reasons why -- whether in disappointment with the Packers or in favor of the Raiders?
Also, if this is true, why was it seemingly assumed by just about everyone following the Packers that Davante was going to stay?

Because money usually talks. Everything we heard could have been a negotiating tactic, though his disappointment at not getting an extension prior to the 2021 rings true to my ear. If so, demerit to Gute.

It also sounds like he really wanted to play with his old college QB, Derek Carr, in Las Vegas. It also seems likely to me that GB agreed to match and to exceed the contract he signed with Las Vegas.

Two moves make me a bit nervous. The first is the signing of Campbell to a big contract. How often have we seen a guy have a great season in his contract year, only to become mediocre, injured or totally ineffective following a big payday? Way too often. Add in the Smith extension, which follows the same pattern, and you have two potential problems. Then again, they may both continue to be very good players, and the team will benefit. It's a gamble, and time will tell. But I'm thinking one of these guys will disappoint in a big way this year.

I see your point and its usually a good one, but Campbell and Smith both have managed to stay healthy their entire careers. Campbell has missed 1 game since his rookie year and that was last year due to covid iirc. And Preston Smith judt missed the first game of his career after playing in over 100 straight. If there's ever been 2 players to feel confident about staying healthy, its these two.

A thumbs up from me, ricky, as I empathize with your point -- plus you could add Douglas to that list.
IMO, all three are good signings, though.
All three are risks, but seem to be good risks at their salaries (and, as said by Sanity, at least two are healthy risks).
A relevant question would be to consider what were the alternatives.
***
It's that question that has me exceedingly sad about not signing MVS -- as a rare poor decision by our GM.
With MVS, we would've needed just one rookie wide receiver to be a significant contributor -- while hoping for Lazard and Amari Rodgers, and one or more of our other roster guys, to also come up strong. That seems reasonable.
MVS is a risk, but a good risk in that he has the potential to be a WR1 or WR2. Also, what we already know is that he has exceptional speed to a rare degree.
It can take a rookie two or more seasons to become a WR1 or WR2; as for veterans, an expensive former WR1 or WR2 is risky as far as slipping to a lower level.
Plus, MVS is one of ours as someone drafted by the Packers. I'm so sad to see him go as a person and a player.

IMO The Packers need to draft TWO WR's in the first 2 rounds. I'm enamored with Treylon Burks and what he could bring to this offense. I don't care so much about his 40 times, especially when you watch his tape. IMO in the MFL offense, devising ways to get the ball in his hands in space WOULD be special.

Burks and Tolbert...Burks and Pierce... Hell, Olave and Burks or Burks and Williams from Alabama. Normally I wouldn't want the Packers to draft a player who may not be able to play in week one of his rookie season but Williams is SPECIAL. Pierce has been compared to Jordy Nelson only faster and Tolbert is a big WR who can FLY.

With the other 2 picks in the take a Edge and Safety. The Packers can wait until the 3rd or 4th for a OT and then look at WR AGAIN with speed.

Id rather they use their top 3 picks on other positions then snag receivers with their late 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round picks. Too many good players in this draft to focus solely on receiver.

Okay, let's compromise between Nick and Sanity: one wide receiver selected by the Packers in the first four picks, then another one or two later in the draft.
Maybe take a WR as our top choice. (Who would you want, in that case?)
Being a GM in the NFL is just that easy ;-).

Dont get me wrong, if the Packers are on the clock and the top guy on their board is a receiver and he fits the offense, go for it. I'm just not overly impressed with any of these receivers. There arent any Justin Jeffersons or Jamar Chase's who are cant miss prospects. With the crazy depth in this draft at other high value positions, I cant imagine the Packers will have many receivers ranked higher than the other studs who will be available to them. I just dont want to see them reaching for receivers because its a position of need. Thats not good business. Just get the best players they can and the rest will work itself out.

I think the Packers almost must take a WR with 22 or 28, simply because waiting into round 2 puts them in a spot where it's way too easy for other teams to jump ahead for a WR they know the Packers covet.

I just don't get it: What do all the other moves matter if your quarterback is, um, far less than perfect when it comes to putting the team first?
As if it hasn't already happened that he's jerked us around in the offseason, and then let us down in the playoffs.
When we sell out our integrity, we tend to lose all the rest, as well.
***
I've been a huge fan of Gute for the most part, and it's sad that his general intelligence and effectiveness as a general manager will be undone by groveling before an arrogant quarterback with a strong and accurate arm but a weak and wayward heart.
A huge part of being a winner at quarterback is willing a team to victory and rallying a team to victory. All of the stats aside, it takes heart to be a true leader in moments of challenge: to inspire men and to bring out the best in them.
If I'm more than a little sad about the quarterback situation with the Packers, it's because it's hard to see an otherwise talented team doomed from the start by one runaway ego left unrestrained.
***
Along these lines, I received a book for Christmas that is a novel based on the life of Vince Lombari: "Character is What Counts."
The title seems to speak strongly to the Packers of today, but I haven't yet read the contents.
Are there any other fans who have a personal review of the book to offer, or at least a sincere blurb?

No doubt that Christian Watson could be one of the many WRs in play for the Packers. Especially so if Gutekunst works a trade down from 28 . I don’t think he will take Watson at 28, and have doubts he’ll be there at #53 >>>> all because of HYPE. Compare his college stats to MVS, PICK #174 of the 2018 NFL Draft.

*****
A perfect time for a note on REAL “over-drafting.” Would you take Christian Watson at 28? If so, would you take him at 22??? No? Why TF not?”

To me, it’s that simple. Do you believe in the player that much or not? If he’s not worth a slot 6 positions ahead in a draft, he’s probably not worth it.

*****

This whole scenario we appear to be in with the end of Aaron Rodgers’ time in Green & Gold could have features built into contract language that limits some - more - of the damage to the Packers’ future, so I’ll leave that alone. However, I see a narcissist full bore intent upon bettering his own standing and not that of the team.

If only he cared more about Lombardi Trophies than MVPs…

I don’t like it, but as a fan, have no choice but to be miserable, or, set it aside, see what happens, and hope for the best. Essentially, play along: “OK, so, in this scenario, yeah, it is equal parts mess and potenti… a… no. Check that. It’s a mess with - some - potential for success. An awful lot would have to go right, and if it did, we might be paying dearly for it. For how long?”

In my eyes, trading Rodgers, if at all possible, would be preferable.

Last year? Jesus, Maria ė José!!! Still can’t get that stink off. Tagging Davante Adams and then trading him was chef’s kiss, added to Gutekunst’s masterful roster additions. Still, a lotta junk to clear out of the drawer.

Tell me honestly, yes or no, is his deep ball getting better with age? And, we’re adding speed at WR…? OK.

We’ll see.

GG,
As one of the most well thought out posters here I am totally in agreement though not sure I'd take Watson that high. Rodgers should have been traded and if in some crazy arrangement a miracle occurred where he has been traded in principal but deal isn't finalized until June 1st I'd be ecstatic only if in return the Packers got a kings ransom. Not counting on it though. Think we all know where things stand, so I'm supportive and hoping Gutey can pull a number of rabbits out of his hat the next few drafts.

The Packers are going to be fine. I trust Gutekunst won't cave to pressure and knows his needs well. Maybe, maybe he taps WR in R1...

If by some crazy chance 2 gems warranting selection R1 falls to him, maybe he hits both of them.

After getting a better read on this draft, I can see there are some prime WR targets, and then a boatload of others... like a freaking quintuple-decker cruise ship full. Some of this second group warrant First Class accommodations. Some don't.

All I know is that there are great, great, great talents to be had if the Packers work this draft to the very best of their abilities. I mean, the very best... Below is a pretty good example of what I'm talking about:

22 WR Treylon Burks
28 WR Jahan Dotson
53 OT Daniel Faalele
59 LB Troy Andersen
93 TE Jelani Woods
132 DT Neil Ferrell Jr.

We all know some weird stuff can happen. It's early. First week in April. We are more than 3 weeks out. All that's happening right now, is buzzz... whirring... lotsa whirring... a whole lotta noise from the draft industry machine playing catch up.

THIS IS HOW BAD IT IS: Cory is clearly caught up in the draft hype on Spin-Cycle... Can you hear the machine making that off-balance bashing sound???!!! FFS.

"And even if Gutekunst bucks the trend and stays put at 22 and 28 in the first round, North Dakota State’s Christian Watson fits that requirement for size (6-foot-4), speed (4.36 40-yard dash) and versatility by playing running back and special teams as well as wide receiver. Drafting Watson at either of those two spots would give the Packers another shot at another playmaker."

He's talking about #22 and #28 - essentially saying we should draft MVS in R1... compare Watson's and MVS's college stats. I dare anyone wanting Watson R1 to do so. MVS was taken R5.

C'mon...!!!
