Cory's Corner: LaFleur Proves That Culture Matters In Green Bay

Nobody is bigger than the team and the Packers proved that by suspending Jaire Alexander for one game.

Culture matters in any organization. If your organization is going to have any sustained success, the culture must be unquestioned and rock solid.

Jaire Alexander backed Packers coach Matt LaFleur into a corner by naming himself a captain and nearly botching the coin toss vs. the Panthers last week. This of course comes on the heels of Alexander sitting out the last six games. I cannot be the only person that was shocked when I found out that Alexander was playing at Carolina.

It just so happens that the Packers are playing the Vikings, who just so happen to have one of the best wideouts in Justin Jefferson. And it just so happens that if the Packers (7-8) or Vikings (7-8) lose, they will be eliminated from the playoffs.

Sunday night’s matchup is a de facto playoff game. So, sitting a cover corner that has been named to a couple Pro Bowls probably doesn’t sit right with a lot of people. Many want Alexander just to play so the Packers can have a better shot at the postseason.

But even if the Packers miss the playoffs because of Alexander’s awful decision making, this is a great lesson for a young team to learn. Winning is the ultimate denominator in sports, so if a loss comes via a stupid mistake, that should mean that much more.

“I think there’s a lot of lessons along the way from everybody involved and hopefully we learn from them, and I think we will. I think there will probably be better communication moving forward,” said LaFleur.

There’s that buzzword: communication. There’s absolutely no reason why we should be discussing communication in late December. That needed to be tightened up by Week 3. But that’s also a Joe Barry problem and even if the Packers put it all together and make the playoffs, the Packers defensive coordinator doesn’t deserve to come back.

This is like being caught cheating on a test. Yet, many Packers fans want Alexander to still be able to turn it in. LaFleur grabbed the test and ripped it up in front of the team.

The reason why this is so disappointing is because this is Alexander’s sixth season. He turns 27 in February and is the highest paid cornerback at $21 million a season. The Packers needed a leader from Alexander this year. They needed someone that could set an example and lead this team into the next chapter of consistency.

Instead, Green Bay got selfishness wrapped in ego. Just when this team was rid of a veteran’s hunger for selfishness, another one pops up that destroys the team dynamic.

This team has plenty of good pieces. It has buckets of talent on defense that needs to be trusted that it can perform. It has a quarterback that has played very well in his first season as a starter. It has a rookie tight end that is willing to eat shards of glass to put on a Packers helmet and it has a group of wideouts that do so many different things.

What this team needs now is leaders. It needs players to show the way, put the team over individuals and just play.

The rest will fall into place.

I suspect Jaire is gone after the season. I also suspect that like Rasul and Jerry Gray, he realized he was working for an idiot (Barry) and lost respect for him. And since MLF hired Barry and then decided to keep him, that 'stupid' stink is on MLF as well. Whether moving players out of Green Bay and getting a new DC will get that stink off of MLF for the players IS the question going into next season.

I don't think they'll move on from Alexander, at least not after this year. With David Bakhtiari almost a certainly gone , that will be over $19 million is dead money for next season. I highly doubt they want to add over $24 million in additional dead money. They just got done paying over $40 million in dead money from Rodgers this year. Two years in a row with over $40 million each year? No way!

Plus, I think the talk between Gute, LaFleur, and Alexander has already happened. In 2024 there will be a NEW defensive coordinator in Green Bay. The Packers and hopefully Alexander BOTH want to see what that will look like before anyone is traded or cut.

If they know his body is broken the offers will be lower. I have three DBs in the first three rounds, two CBs and a safety. The pass rush needs a pure speed guy as a dedicated attacker on passing downs, ergo, a four down lineman front. I would trade Walker.

Alexander won't be released. He will be given an opportunity for redemption after Barry Ball is tossed into the NFL ash bin of history.

I also do not believe MLF had anything to do with the suspension except to chirp the company line after Gutey, who has been able to maintain his control of personnel, made the decision.

I expect Gutey, being the General Manager of Personnel, received good intel from his personal player network that Alexander's insubordinate behavior toward Barry was spreading in the locker room...Campbell being one who said the quiet part out loud...who is also sitting on Sunday.

I have a feeling Gutey told the Football Committee he was going to nip this in the bud and suspend Alexander for insubordination. I expect Murphy agreed and MLF got in line.

This type of difficult decision making regarding players and staff is where MLF is very timid and status quo.

Hmmm...I don't know LP. Remember those "Silos" Mark Murphy created in 2018. That CRAP is still in place. Lafleur and Gute are very much on equal footing aren't they? I think you're right, Gute probably was the one who said this idiot has got to have some repercussions from his behavior and it needs to happen NOW. But I believe MLF needed to sign off of it too.

While I somewhat agree with you that Joe Barry lost the lockerroom and that many players (especially veterans) watching what they are asked to do just have no will to play by ordered. Veteran players, who are not certain on their future with team are especially mad, as the way Joe Barry doing his job crashing down their potential market value in millions $.

Despite that, you can not act in the way you are hurting team by your behaviour or public statements, because you are hurting your colleagues, not helps them. So, for me at the moment, I'll go with the Packers decision as the right thing to do, but to be able to justify it, they have to part a way with at least Joe Barry!

Jaire's behavior was totally unacceptable! I cannot even fathom another player behaving like this. Hugely wrong walking out there to begin with but then to have the audacity to call the coin toss it's mind boggling regardless if he has lost respect for the coaching staff. Not a leader and speaks of extreme immaturity. Illustrates why the players do not vote for him to be Captain. Reminds me of the whole Za'darius Smith situation where you have an incredible talent but immature personality with bizzare behaviors. Other players may not say anything but they certainly won't vote for them to be their captain and team leader.

This behavior will be a stain on Jaire's career long past retirement. If the Packers lose to the Vikings it is going to be ugly but Jaire has no one to blame other than himself. I too imagine Jaire will hold this against the Packers rather than accepting responsibility meaning one way or another he will push for a trade, or simply won't resign once contract is up. Be a shame if Packers play well but lose & knocked out of playoffs because of Jaire's immature & selfish behavior.

I agree. The main reason for the coin toss was to get the ball to start the game. Now most teams defer. They should just give the visiting team first option and play ball. Or the home team for home field advantage.

I understand wanting the ball after halftime adjustments...but for the Packers, they need their best unit on the field to start a game.

MLF putting Barry instead of himself in charge of setting the tone for the game is, well, let me say, not very bright. And MLF is not a stupid man. I don't get it.

What am I missing?

"Who gets excited about sitting & watching this anyway."

It's all part of the way the NFL packages this reality TV product for viewers to consume. They like the "drama" of the coin toss, just as much as the tension around a measurement for a first down. The chain gang doesn't need to exist, and technology is available to reliably determine if a team has gotten a first down. It's all about selling the sizzle. After all, what on earth would happen if cameras were fixed on the game on the field and not endless shots of coaches with play sheets in front of their faces, close-ups of the famous player du jour, and knuckleheads/celebrities in the stands.

Someone as talented but as mentally jacked up as Jyree needs a coach with a Parcellsian attitude and demeanor to keep him in check, and his talent directed to what he delivers on the field, not what he says in the Pressers after the games.

"That'll cool your ass down!" would have gone a lot further with someone like Jyree than this word salad - “I think there’s a lot of lessons along the way from everybody involved and hopefully we learn from them, and I think we will. I think there will probably be better communication moving forward.”

If you can coach up the most talented defensive player in the history of the league by grinding on him every day to get better, as Parcells did with LT, then grinding on Jyree with a coarser grit might be what's needed to refocus his ass.

It was appropriate you again quoted MLF with your comment as it perfectly makes your point, Savage:

“I think there’s a lot of lessons along the way from everybody involved and hopefully we learn from them, and I think we will. I think there will probably be better communication moving forward.”

I think...lessons along the way...everybody involved...hopefully....I think we will...I think there will probably...better communication...moving forward. Geez...MLF ain't "coarser grit"...he's powdered sugar.

How about "Jaire knows what he did to be suspended. He will learn from these mistakes. Or he will learn them on another team."

That quote is emblematic to me why MLF may be a very good coordinator one day...he is close now.

But as a HC he does not lead with assertive, determined decision making and clear communication when it comes to players and staff to improve his team's performance. I even read he was opposed to firing Drayton and did so reluctantly.

Effective leaders have make the tough calls. It is not fun...it IS necessary.

JA is a knucklehead. He's always been a knucklehead and does knucklehead things. What he did against the Panthers was a knucklehead move. Not a slap in the face of MLF or Gute or the Packers. He didn't pee on the statue of Lombardi at Lambeau. Let's stop overreacting. Gute is sending a clear message that things have changed since 12 departed. Ja will serve his one game and be back against the Bears and he'll be back next year and yes, he will still be a knucklehead, but he will learn that there is a line not to cross.

"There’s absolutely no reason why we should be discussing communication in late December."

I hear you, Corey, but as a senior manager it often struck me how often I had to repeat so many things. I wasn't so naive as to believe I could say it once and expect it to hold, but there were times I couldn't believe I was being paid to craft new words for the same message so often. Eventually I learned to keep teaching... even though it seemed herding kittens sometimes. Lots of parallels to coaching.

Picture LaFleur's pre-game speech. "Oh, yeah, one last thing guys. If you're not a team captain don't go out for the coin toss. That's a captain's job. Oh, and tie your shoes."

They're not toddlers. "Don't put that in your mouth, Darnell!"

Ultimately it’s talent. He’s got it. Until they believe that he no longer has, he will be treated accordingly. Compare this with a certain RB who was mouthy about deserving snaps last year.

The only thing I will say is that it seems like LaFleur doesn’t have a good grip on handling such characters. It should never have got to this point. That’s on coaches and others to identify and communicate as much as LaFleur personally, but fine he’s their boss it is his responsibility.

Had Jaire been benched immediately it might have been a stronger lesson others and he might be available this week. However, we might have been better not to play him last week regardless. Im actually more worried about who and how that decision was made.

Barry will be gone. That should clear the air. If the new guy lets his CBs play to their strengths, we will do better and they will be happier and better set up to make plays. A virtuous circle Barry seems always to want to avoid.

Alexander can be reclaimed unless he wants to commit professional suicide. We have seen his talent...talent Joe Barry has been ignoring with him and other players for almost 3 years.

I would like to know what "communication" MLF has had with his incompetent DC about Alexander and other misused D players.

For now the Packers own his professional services and if JA continues to be a locker room cancer, his paychecks and market value will rapidly melt away. The malcontent CB knows this.

Granted Jaire's actions were wrong. But, was it an imperative going into weak 17 to hurt the team in order to move on? Other coaches might have handled this different. For one thing the problem has been festering and should have been handled much earlier in the locker room behind closed doors. Perhaps a serious one on one conversation might have been more productive. Good God we are in a playoff hunt with two games to go! Once Vince Lombardi said "winning isn't everything ...it's the only thing". Lombardi could give a good tongue lashing when needed. His players both feared and loved him. Above all they respected him. I do not think management today has that respect from the players. I think it is management that has become the Achilles heel for the Packers.

WD,
This would have never happened on a Lombardi team.
If it had, that player would have been sent directly to the locker room and possibly even cut or traded the next day. Remember Jim Ringo?
The biggest difference is that Lombardi would have just grabbed the 'next man up' from the bench and that guy would have played well, whoever or whatever he was. The rest of the team would have made sure he was where he needed to be.

Hounddog, I don't question what you say and I do remember the Jim Ringo incident and trade well, but in today's NFL, the coaches are dealing with an entirely different mentality due a lot because of changes in culture and economics.

During Lombardi's coaching days, players were making salaries which were comparable to the people who lived in Green Bay were making and often took jobs during the off season (like an old defensive end named John Martinkovic who sold cars).

In this particular case the coaches are dealing with a player, Alexander, who is making more money on his current contract than any of us will dream of making during our lifetime. All this adds up to running the show as did Lombardi a very difficult proposition.

Many Gen Z's and milennials such as Jaire in general (cannot 100% stereotype obviously) see and behave much differently in society, as well as in the workplace from what many of us are used to. What has been considered universally acceptable no longer is with many of the younger population. I am not saying because Jaire is a millennial he behaved this way, or that he is a knucklehead. Jaire is unique because he is Jaire! 😀

Owens isn't long term. And the "Safety Tackling " must

The Defensive Scheme won't change.
Not as Long as Gutey is in charge.
So it will take two Sure tacklers @ Safety.
For this defense to be Awesome.

You will not get both DeJean and Nubin unless you move up and take Nubin in the middle of rd one and that move should be made only to get the LT. As I mentioned, just say no to the SEC. Gutey has wasted a SB appearance and should be yesterday's news. Picking the WRs was a cake walk, given the College passing game produces multiple guys with talent. Kraft will be the pro bowl guy. Last year he whiffed on TEs which were available. Ferguson was in his backyard. McBride etc etc. As long as the inbred crew stay on at 1265 Lombardi, expect the repeating function of a perpetual Groundhog Day around the Ice Rink's fire pit.Owens tackles,I like him in SS close to the LOS in three safety looks. LaFleur is the problem,Selecting/ retaining Barry, letting the locker room lose it's Mojo.

Cory, where have you been, what cave have you been hiding in all week? Was your power out, no TV and no computers? You're Way off base.
Yes, Alexander backed LaFleur into a corner by blatantly and visibly 'cheating on a test' and then coming up with a failing score when he did hand it in. But, contrary to your suggestion, LaFleur did NOT tear it up.
Instead, he stayed sitting in the corner with his nose against the wall and cowered silently for two days.
Then, on the third day he took the 'cheated' test and ran to the Assistant Principle with his tail between his legs, crying "What'll We Do. What'll We Do"? The assistant principle tore it up!
LaFleur is too much of a coward to do something, or anything without 'permission' from above. His refusal(s) to fire Barry and bench Alexander immediately after the coin toss are testament to that, and two examples of why the Packers' present day culture is what it is.
His balls are in his golf bag.

While I might have phrased it a bit differently, I think you hit the nail on the head Houndog. MLF has to know there are problems in the defensive locker room concerning Barry (Campbell's tweet, Jaire's behavior all season, Gray's departure last season are public examples, I suspect there are more private examples) and yet he took almost three days to publicly react to the Carolina fiasco. That is not the timeline of a confident leader.

Alexander should have been benched immediately after the coin toss. Better yet, LaFleur would have known that Jaire was from Charlotte and either explained to him in advance why he wasn't going to be a captain for the coin toss or made him a captain for the coin toss. Knowing your people is a big part of being a leader and small gestures can provide a great deal of motivation. Lafleur failed on all counts.

Thanks, Guam,
This whole thing is a nightmare. Watching the offense progress over the season only to see the same shit defense Barry is famous for has been a real drag, and it could have been avoided, if only......
I think Gray had just had enough, he saw the handwriting on the wall and bailed. You can't blame him, he was the guy with a real track record (along with Bisachia, who also has that Assistant Head coach title) and he realized this was fast becoming a dead-end street for him.
Murphy's got 1-1/2 years left, so we know management is going to change. If Lafleur doesn't have a good season next year, he's likely gone. Finding new, GOOD assistants this offseason will NOT be easy, assistant's like at least a couple years of security!
What a fucking mess!

I just don't understand what Lafleur sees in Barry. He never should have been hired as a DC given his track record and certainly should have been let go a year ago when his defenses had underperformed for two years. "What a f**king mess" indeed.

If you have any specific details of what happened and how it all went down behind closed doors, you should fill us in. But I don't think you really have any clue about that, and you probably shouldn't act as if you do.

Ja Morant, Aaron Rodgers, Kyrie Irving, Jaire Alexander-all too self-important for team sports. No matter what the cap implications, a player like that needs to go.

Morant is still acting out, Rodgers is in process of poisoning his current team with his ego, Alexander is less toxic but has the same arrogance, lack of self-awareness.

The team management group was forced to bench him, this wasn't one man's decision. It had become increasingly obvious based on the number of penalties accrued (even for the youngest team in the NFL) that accountability was lacking and it started last season with Walker's actions that only drew lip service. A good indication was when MLF went off on Wyatt for lining up off sides multiples times on the sideline - but it ended with a hug which makes it hard to get your point across. Prior to that the only time MLF was animated on the sidelines was flapping his hands asking for more crowd noise. Where the Hell is - "What The Hell Is Going On Out There".

To me, after watching, I do not understand why Jaire was playing in the first place. He didn’t look like he was ready physically. In many ways that’s a bigger question about what’s going on.

After the coin toss there’s another level of questions about why he was not benched immediately but also kept in. In the end though I don’t know that we lose by not playing a one armed Jaire. I’m more worried about how we deploy whomever.

You could say that same thing for Ford and Savage.
These guys are not listening to the coach.
You miss practice it shows.

Is it about the individual ? Or THE DEFENSE?

How did we win against the Lions and Chiefs?
If you're correct.

100% agree team first, especially on defense. The defense was performing better with the "backups". If we can generate some pass rush and keep <insert QB name here> in the pocket, we can win. Go Pack Go.

PS Barry needs to move along. Really tired of seeing teams easily convert on 3rd and 12. I mean cmon man!

I don't know the ins-and-outs of the collective bargaining agreement but I suspect that Jaire will lose one game paycheck for the suspension. Sportrac says his annual salary is $21 million, so losing 1/17th is more than a million dollars lost. BTW-his dead cap if cut would be around $27 million. I doubt the Packers will cut him, instead just look for a team that can absorb his contract and work a deal.

Who knows they might just kiss and make up.

Harry,
I read somewhere that its 1/17th of his salary and some small fraction of the signing and roster bonuses. The same article also said that part of his pay is based on "Active Roster' so he may have been docked for some of the weeks he was inactive. I don't remember it specifically.

I don't think our culture is fixed just because we gave Jaire a little slap on his pee-pee. He is a symptom of a bigger problem in LaFleurs' leadership style - he's just not tough enough to be a HC. Thank god Gutes came in to show some balls finally. Think what you want, but I don't think that you can teach tough leadership to LaFleur. I'd like to be wrong in that regard.

But back to Jaire specifically. He's not anywhere near the player he was. Call it physical injuries or a general sickness between the ears, keeping him around doesn't feel like a good, long term solution. Regardless of whether he's let go or traded, he's simply a bad investment. And usually, it's better to cut and run asap from bad investments.

I would rather see us dumping all the big/non-productive salaries next season and look ahead to 2025 when you-know- who retires in Jul 2025. We have an up and coming QB. Lets not waste him like we did with Rodgers with all sorts of historical mistakes that we won't address (and yes, that most certainly includes Barry). We have a solid foundation for our rebuild. Let's not take half-assed measures - by keeping malcontents on the team - to impede it. GPG

We all know the suspension was not due to the coin toss silliness.

We have all worked for incompetent bosses from time to time. Do we talk about the incompetent boss with co workers? Do the comments reach the boss's boss? When the boss's boss ignores the festering problems, do the problems get better or worse over time?

The entire situation is due to MLF indecision and Murphy's Management by Committee that enables delayed decision making on difficult issues.

Really….MLF culture matters? After his jackass coin flip nonsense MLF quickly reacted to honor his line in the sand culture is the imperative. After letting him then go out there and represent that high Packers culture that drives important decisions, they let him play THE WHOLE GAME! WTF!

I’ve coached 40 years HS level and it would have taken me two seconds to say you’re done! Go to the locker room and we’ll talk after the game. I know because that’s exactly what I did!

But protect the culture MLF had to have someone help him find his culture days later and implement the culture preserving suspension. Yah…spare me about how important that MLF lead culture really is!

Communication is very important. But actions speak louder than words. LaFleur has shown he is not willing to make changes to his coaching staff, even when the people in charge have shown they cannot handle their duties. Most glaringly, of course, Barry. But also, Bessacia has not added the spark to the ST's everyone thought he would. Stenavich has been promoted beyond his capabilities, but is retained, while his replacement, Butkus, has shown he has a tough time coaching guys to do their best. And who, exactly, is in charge of choosing the starters on the OL? The last two to three years, it seems the team always has at least one "weak link" on the line. It becomes obvious, becomes glaring, and becomes embarrassing. And then, after four or five weeks of the lineman doing his best, but not capable of excelling at a pro level, he is replaced, and the line improves immediately. Is someone playing favorites? Are there personality clashes? Or simply stubbornness? It seems the defense is quietly rebelling against its inept DC, and might very well be playing below their abilities (Alexander being the most obvious) to try to get Barry fired. And although we are all positive Barry is gone at season's end, remember, we all thought that last year. Oops. Will LaFleur once again choose coaches over players?

Warned CurdNation during the epic losing stretch (~week 7) that established vets on this team would revolt, with Alexander specificially singled out. Strong personalities NEED leadership--but leadership must earn their respect in order for them to fall in line. These are the necessary warrior personalities--the difference makers on the team that excel in life because they're not afraid to fail...they welcome any and all challenges. What Jaire did was inexcuseable and should have consequence, but IMHO, this is just his plea of "making the obvious known" from an internal perspective: leadership is as scarce as snow in WIsconsin these days--f^cking do something about it. Can't mince words here, we b!tch day in, day out on CHTV about how much of a p^ssy MLF is, how Barry has to go, etc...truthfully, I applaud Jaire. Give me 11 clones of him and you could have an ~Antonio Brown~ ticking time bomb. GIve me a dozen clones of him with superb coaching that demands and deserves respect, I'll give you a Super Bowl winning defense.

I can't remember the exact season or the name of the rookie involved, but it was during William Henderson's time with the Packers. Henderson verbally jacked up the rook on the way out to the practice field in training camp, telling the kid to tuck in his jersey, that there was a right way to do things on this team.

The elected captains for the Carolina game were Aaron Jones, Quay Walker, and Eric Wilson. I can see Walker and Wilson keeping quiet when Alexander joined them for the coin toss. You know, out of respect for an older veteran player, but I'm a a little surprised Jones didn't tell Jaire to take his ass back to the sideline. Jaire needs to own that behavior, and I know it wasn't Jones' day to chaperone. Still, a leader like William Henderson would have shut that shit down.

If you've ever played a team sport you understand how disrespectful Jaire's behavior was to his teammates and coaches. It was a violation of trust. You just don't do that.

"I'm a a little surprised Jones didn't tell Jaire to take his ass back to the sideline. "

Is it Jones failing to provide leadership, or was Jones expressing understanding for Jaire's issues? From the reports, Jones didn't even intervene when there was confusion about what the Packers wanted to do. It was the referee, who was told by LaFleur in a pregame meeting he wanted to defer if they won the toss, asking questions not any of the other Packer players saying anything.

Alexander is most likely still hurt and therefore not able to tackle well. Which makes his benching a "so what" gesture. Combined with Campbell's comments on his injuries, and the succession of repeated injuries on the team, I wonder about the Packers' culture regarding medical care. Gute is no genius. He's jettisoned veteran leadership repeatedly leading to dissension. This draft class is looking pretty good, but it had to be, based on so many previous duds.

One thing is certain. Fans are very divided on this issue. My guess is so is the locker room. Actions should be judged by there consequences. In other words, what will be the best outcome for the Packers? I don't like management making Jaire "the enemy" Let's be honest. This season is over. I will always root for the Packers, But, realistically the best outcome would be for the Packers to lose the next couple of games and move up in the draft. In terms of Jaire; hopefully in time they can kiss and make up. Emerson once said the best way to defeat the enemy is to make them your friend. I think we definitely start looking forward to next year. That said Barry needs to go. The whole defense needs a fresh start.

Jaire is a player that needs a strong coach to keep him focused and Barry is far from one and LaFleur is scared of his own shadow to enforce any type of punishment, Proof being it took Gutekunst stepping in to put things right. Thank the good Lord Murphy is gone after this year, he was a good business man making GB money but hopefully the next President can be a great leader as well. We need someone to step in and demand greatness from his staff.
