Cory's Corner: Don't Overthink It

Aaron Jones was running around, through and over the Panthers defense in the first quarter. Why didn't that continue?

My grandma always used to say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

The Packers need to use the same philosophy. Green Bay escaped with a 33-30 win over the toothless Panthers but they didn’t put their best foot forward.

Aaron Jones got off to a hot start with 10 touches for 90 yards. That included 82 yards rushing and a pass caught near the line of scrimmage that the 29-year-old turned into eight yards.

But here is where things got weird. Jones had two touches for seven yards in the second quarter.

Help me make this make sense.

Sometimes Packers coach Matt LaFleur just gets in his own way when it comes to offensive tinkering. During the Packers’ three-game winning streak, the offense was thriving with the play-action and bootleg. The offense had movement and flow and defensive players were full of confusion.

That was perfect. Love is in his first season as a starting quarterback and he needs scheme to help him out.

Fast forward to Sunday and Love was playing without Christian Watson and Jayden Reed. To make matters worse, Dontayvion Wicks only played a half after injuring his chest on a touchdown grab.

The Packers needed to lean on the running game and go back to the play-action. Love runs it great and he’s proven that even if there is a free defensive end coming at him, he can change his arm angle very quickly and get a positive gain.

At halftime, Jones had 89 yards rushing and was averaging 8.1 yards a carry. I get that LaFleur and the Packers want to keep his legs fresh, but at the same time, all the games from here on out are playoff games. If the Packers lose one more, they are done.

So what are you saving him for? And why have that argument anyway? Jones has only played in nine games this year. His legs should be fresh. He finished the game with 127 rushing yards on 21 carries.

Jones is and has been the fulcrum of this offense ever since Aaron Rodgers was still in Green Bay. He does so much with his dynamic cutting, his running between the tackles and getting outside. He can also catch and block, which makes him very useful and makes him hard to put on the bench.

If a player rushes for 80 yards in the first quarter, don’t ignore him in the second quarter. That isn’t some new-fangled alphabet soup analytic, that’s Coaching 101.

Even with all of the injuries on offense, this team is good enough to score and beat teams. But it’s not going to beat many of them if the hottest player on the team is sipping Gatorade.

Because it NEVER continues.

Packers offense when Jones is healthy in two easy steps...
1. Have Jones abuse the defense in the first drive/quarter.
2. Forget Jones exists the rest of the game.

Of all the things for MLF to adopt from McCarthy's tenure...SMH.

MLF likes flashy plays, makes him look innovative, its amazing how two coaches in a row completely forget about the running game for whole quarters at a time...Jones may be in his last season with the Packers, he's been a great team player...hopefully they have a RB targeted in the draft...

It's one thing to run flashy plays, but it's another thing to orchestrate them strategically and use them to make more with less.

It will be interesting to see what we have for a backfield next season. Cap space probably won't allow a return of both #33 and 28. I'd love to see #31 Wilson used in the next two games enough for Gutey to evaluate, it's necessary for him to be able to draft intelligently.

With both #88 and 85, the argument could be made that this O would be potent even without a star RB. Especially if they resuscitate the FB position. Although #31 is about halfway between #33 and 28 and has shown he has serious speed when he needs it. He might make a formidable duo with 28? I'd also like to see Gutey get Goodson back, and maybe even Nichols too. Or a draft steal that's better, but OL and DB are real needs.

Isn't Jones on a pitch count?

Maybe they are trying to prevent something, not aggravate his injury?
Just thinking out loud, but what do the Packers know.....right?

Aaron Jones is a smallish back. You can’t run him like you would a Ahman Green because his body wouldn’t stand up to it; he’s been injured enough with his current workload.. The Packers have liked to use him early in the game, which makes sense. Use him to get a lead and then as needed over the rest of the game.

I agree with barutanseijin. Jones is prone to injury and battering him 30 times a game would likely lead to him being out several games. What good is that? You have a battering ram in A. J. Dillon. All defenses adjust and they would soon enough stop Jones.

It is likely Jones is gone next year and possibly Dillon. The Packers will need at least two backs in the draft.

He's been out several games with minimal touches as it is. I don't buy the narrative more touches would mean more missed games.

With competent blocking, Defenses have not been able to stop him. AJ has shown that consistently. Of all NFL RBs, he is one of the very best manufacturing more with less. AJ makes average OL look good.

What has stopped him is the HC's play calling.

Maybe just back off IR? How many backs should we carry? Maybe if we could run block or LaFleur would run Taylor with Dillon obviously in a count we could have kept their D more honest.

We did try one WR carry to Melton in the first half. We could have given that at least a couple of goes. So many excuses made for LaFleur for taking his foot off the gas and trusting Barry to hold the game.

LaFleur set up Barry’s big moment. He seems the only person, on and off the field, that didn’t anticipate how that would go.

Failure to recognize a big problem with the depth chart. When you run a wide zone scheme, you need competent and fast backs to get to the edge. Taylor, Dillon and whatever scrubs he stashes on the P squad don't make it.
Melton had a good game and I agree keep him in the Game Plan. Maybe LaFleur has his designated "looks" for each player component. Carolina scored 20 points, Green Bay 10 in the second half when games are decided. Two 3& outs for this guy when ball control mattered.

#31 Wilson, Goodson and Nichols are not "scrubs." They all got injured. Only Wilson hasn't been sniped by other teams. There's a good chance he will be if he's not signed to the 53 man roster. He needs to play enough in these next two games for Gutey to be able to evaluate him anyway.

Goodson was a guy LaFleur wouldn’t play due to pass pro. He’d have been a great help last season (talent) and this season (injuries) if our “inventive” HC could have found a way to use him as other now have.

Coaching is about finding a way to get around problems not merely avoiding them. LaFleur is very slow to adjust conceptions of players and approach and always has been.

Also, he has been out and not practicing on an injured leg which means his stamina has decreased. Maybe MLF doesn't like him, or he likes to pass even though the running game is productive, or he wants to lose the game because he had a bet, or the Bears secret agent has inserted a chip in his brain. I know writers have to write about something, but the lack of common sense makes for hilarious reading.

Nobody likes being conned. After 5 years, we all know we have been by LaFleur. He’s not a Head Coach. He’s all talk, no action and no learning, personally and collectively as a team. Some refuse to see the many signs, but that doesn’t change the fact that the league has and maybe the players are too.

I don't like the feeling, but it seemed the defense mostly packed it in on Sunday. It looked like a collective "throttling down" by the players. If all 11 are complaining to each other about the pathetic game plans, being embarrassed with inept play calls and schemes, the "here we go again" attitude quickly translates into on field behavior of "the coaches obviously don't care...why should we?"

MLF and Murphy not only accept incompetence and unaccountability...it seems to be part of the Packer's culture. So why should the players believe or act differently?

It's doesn't have to be all or nothing. It made sense to bring both Stokes and Ja back more gradually, not just for performance but to reduce risk of re-injury. Especially with as long as Stokes has been out! His first play, he had NO idea what happened. I'm not sure he ever adjusted to the speed of the game.

He was the fastest man on the team, I'm not sure if he ever gets that speed back?

LP,

maybe you're right but every former player who's a talking head says that players are gonna play. Everything they do is on tape, and their career depends on them playing well. They all know they could be traded to any team at any time, which reduces the level of competition by at least one factor.

You seem to be ignoring this.

I'll agree that the combined ineptitude of coaching + the way Gutey mishandled Rasul Douglas would make it harder for any player to do their best. I thought the defensive players might mutiny by week 4, 2x4s in hand. JB flat out LIED to them, asking them what they wanted to do at the end of last season and telling them ok they'll get to play more aggressively.

How many games has the team lost because JB was too aggressive?

LaFleur pushed Pettine’s not to give up big plays. He took Barry because he explicitly wanted a scheme premised on that. In his first year Barry played tighter (and Stokes seemed a good pick).

Since then Barry has gone more and more defensive minded. Do you really think LaFleur isn’t a factor in that? Do you really believe Barry would it could ignore LaFleur telling him that it’s not acceptable, as he has told us after games multiple times a season?

It’s pretty unlikely that LaFleur is not part of the problem on D at the overarching level. If he wasn’t, why cling to a guy who’s flouting your wishes to such disastrous effect? It can’t be merely passively inept man management. If it doesn’t add up then one isn’t considering key factors.

I agree. Which is why I've always questioned the tanking scenarios that pop up occasionally. Why would any player, or coach for that matter, put anything on tape that could be used against them in the future just so the team might gain a higher draft position, especially considering they could not even be on the team moving forward.

This is true, however, not all players are totally rational and we know from the past that there are circumstances where players believe being out there for a coach is more likely to harm than help because of the way they are used. Whether we’ve reached that point I don’t know, but other teams have previously.

MAYBE there’s been some runs to 33 that Love has checked out of? I don’t know, just asking. Has Love been granted MLF’s “blessing” to change calls at the line? I think to at least some extent he has. Did a lot of that vs KC as I recall.
So also, IF the D adjusts to take away Jones, doesn’t that mean they have to “give away” something else? If so, what? Then let’s do that!

I don’t know why this is downvoted, as of right now …we don’t have a durable back that can run against stacked boxes except Dillon, Which is crucial for play action. Dillion was limited with a thumb cast, Wilson is injured and i’m sorry but as good a Jones is…he is not a 3 down back capable of making it through a full season. That’s been going on the last couple of years which is why i’ve been screaming at the top of my lungs for another High OL pick and a High RB pick the last couple of yrs. But sometimes I get pissed at LaFluer because on a lot of these fake QB keepers…Love should actually keep it and run. I’ve seen him do it like 3 times this year and it’s been extremely successful…he’s young…why not let him do it more? Make the opposition play the whole field more. But in a year where there were a lot of good RBs on the market….they should have taken advantage of it. Jones is great, great person , great player etc…but you gotta show you can stay on the field for a full season and he has not been able to do that the last couple of yrs.

A couple of things.. Everyone says Aaron Jones probably won’t be back next year, so what are they saving him for? The playoffs, lol, that’s not happening. And if Matt LeFleur was serious about the “playoffs” he would have fired Barry weeks ago.
The illness isn’t Joe Barry , he’s just a symptom. The illness is Matt LaFleur. I don’t want to see a young talented team led by a guy that has proven over five years that he’s not a top tier NFL HC. Find a better option. He could have had Brian Flores, Wink Martindale, Vic Fangio and numerous other proven DCs. His offense is inconsistent no matter who is under center. They’re soft on both sides of the ball. Too many stupid penalties, too many cases of the wrong players in the starting line up.
LeFleur has proven he is too slow to recognize the obvious.. EG: Kevin king, Dean Lowry, Royce Newman, Shawn Mennenga, Mike Pettine, Mo Drayton, Joe Barry, Darnell Savage..
Has anyone seen how Rasul Douglas has been playing in Buffalo? We traded our best defensive back for what will be one of the last 3rd round picks. And we need DBs. Watch the film on Alexander.. his attempts at tackling are alarming. He is no longer an elite player. In fact if you can’t tackle, you are a liability. He should not even be starting. Another $88 million wasted.
The soft, mistake prone , non cohesive culture of this team must change. And that change starts with the HC. Gutekunst has some bad misses, but he has put together a team that was good enough to compete THIS year. They played about three complete, or complimentary games.
Not that press conferences count for much, but even they have become a divisive embarrassment. MLF has to go. They need to recognize that players that don’t play also have to go. Cut them, trade them and move on. Watson is the latest. Our receivers are good. He’s a distraction. They don’t need him. If they did need him, he will be in sweatpants anyway. Campbell, Stokes, Alexander, Watson, Savage… this roster is loaded with overrated players that rarely play, let alone produce. And we bring them along slowly as if they were the next James Lofton or Herb Adderley.
They are getting hard to watch AND listen to after each disappointing performance.

"Fire everybody" is not an effective team building technique.

The executive board could remove MM from all football operations entirely, and also remove his silos idea. They could allow him the grace of retaining his title until the planned retirement date, and it would help the team just as much.

Changing the organizational structure so that we have a real GM would help, even if Gutey were to stay on for a prove it year. It'd be interesting to know what he'd want to do with this dysfunctional mess ...

It's also premature to evaluate Ja as a flop. His shoulder prevents him from being able to tackle? Ok he shouldn't be on the field, or at least should be on a snap count. It will be interesting to see how they scheme for Justin Jefferson, he'll still be out, right?

It’s not just Jones. The hot hand in the first half at receiver was Melton. So you increase his snaps in the second? No, LaFleur reduces them despite injuries.

Some people talk the talk but never deliver. LaFleur can’t manage and adapt to player resources any better than he can manage coaches. It’s not just Jones.

As to Jones’ performance, it’s more remarkable for how poorly the OL played. We talk a lot about Barry, but here is a sobering set of assessments from PFF:

LT Rasheed Walker: 40.6
C Josh Myers: 41.3
RG Sean Rhyan: 44.8
RT Zach Tom: 46.6

The OL, playing a not great DL, was, apart from Jenkins, flat out awful in PFF’s assessment. All the above were dire in the run game and not great in passing situations.

In a year when we knew we had to run, the OL is just as much of an area that LaFleur has simply allowed to bumble along at an unsatisfactory level all season without obvious efforts to address and certainly any success doing so.

Firing Barry won’t fix the OL. There are similar issues within the O. To become better, we need to move on from LaFleur and find someone willing and able to select and manage coaches, including holding them accountable for performance. We need to root out the cause not merely fix the symptoms.

LaFleur talks of accountability and it being a results driven game but he talks a lot and nothing changes. He’s all mouth and no trousers. We aren’t getting better til we have a head coach who can coach and manage. He’s still got room to improve as an OC.

CW,

I agree with your general assessment, but caution against PFF grades. Zach Tom did very well on many plays against a seriously dangerous opponent..

That there was only one sack wasn't just our O line, JL10 had a lot to do with that. Certainly the biggest failure of the season is on coaching, failure to forge a dominant O line out of the available talent. Yes that goes up to MLF, and also includes Butkus and Stenavitch. (Plus whoever else) Without blaming JB for any of that, he has plenty of foibles of his own.

"The OL, playing a not great DL, was, apart from Jenkins, flat out awful in PFF’s assessment. All the above were dire in the run game and not great in passing situations.

In a year when we knew we had to run, the OL is just as much of an area that LaFleur has simply allowed to bumble along at an unsatisfactory level all season without obvious efforts to address and certainly any success doing so."

And once again we have players saving MLF. Instead of a HOF QB and WR plus a top 10 OL we have a first year QB and raw WR saving MLF from his own failings. Imagine if Love wasn't putting up comparable numbers that our 2 previous HOF QBs did in their first year? Or Jayden Reed wouldn't be close to Packer rookie records for receptions, or Wicks wouldn't be a go-to guy in his rookie season? Maybe it's time for Murphy to recognize he hired a HC who can't elevate anyones play and needs other's to elevate his coaching.

I believe the person who selects and manages coaches is Gutey. And he forces the HCs to work with whomever he provides. Nothing has led me to think otherwise. I could be wrong. They were hampered by the cap, however you’re correct….in a year where you’re relying on a Run game and Good defense to help basically a Rookie QB….the first thing I would have done is draft a Top OL guard and Center…Jenkins already proved he could replace Baktiaris snaps last year and part of the year before, so could yosh nijman. But you can’t afford to screw the pooch on Center and Guard and they knew they would need a long term answer at RB. Dillon is short yardage and Jones is oft injured. There were too many needs this year, not enough money and not enough draft picks.Im pretty sure that this is Barry’s last Season in GB. But yes, this OL has been suspect all year and there could have been some things done schematically to compensate for it.

There are copious direct and clear statements that spell out that Gute has no control over coaching hires or management. Murphy expressly carved that out of the GM role when he changed the structure. In fact? Ball handled almost all of TTs responsibilities outside of scouting and drafting. All 3 report only to Murphy. Murphy has also vociferously asserted that LaFleur has the sole say in coaching decisions.

PFF has Derrick Brown with an 88 grade on the year and Tom looked good against him on some early running plays when the Panthers were in base. I think PFF is letting their passing bias show.

Walker on the other hand has had some truly bad run blocks. Can this staff fix it is a big question.

Hard to buy into PFF's offensive grades and assessment for the game when we ran the ball as effectively as we have all year and J Love through from clean pockets most of the game. The grades just don't add up to the results.

I understand the context of this argument, however it was easy to see Carolina and Evero making adjustments after getting gashed early on by Jones. They were bringing more run blitzes and trying to force Love to beat them through the air. Carolina started getting stops on LOS. The offensive gameplan and execution was not the problem in this game. MLF did not really abandon the run, it was an adjustment to the adjustment.

Incompetence? The offense? What game were you watching? They scored 33 points with nearly 7.1 yards per play against a top 10 pass defense. Carolina had scored 4 TOTAL TDs in their last 5 games... they scored 4 on Sunday. Young had 200 pass yards in the 2nd half...

Good morning everyone, just checking in to tell you that Santa came late, but what he brought couldn't have been better! The Baltimore Ravens!
As a Packer fan in 49er territory all I could do was sit back and smile all night long, until reality set in.
The cold hard reality was that what I had just watched was two very well-coached football teams. Yeah the 9er's laid an egg, but there's no denying they're well coached, something we can't seem to find any hope of with LaFlake involved. Its hard to believe he ever worked with Shanahan, there are no similarities whatsoever, its day and night.
Now, if somehow Santa decided to bring Murphy a set of balls, maybe a year from now we'll be happier, but I have some serious doubts.
Santa, as is rightfully so, doesn't think much of Murphy!

This is still the team that beat the Lions and the Chiefs. Doesn't look like it.

At least part of the difference is our D players flat out decided they were going to win their one on one matchups against the Chiefs. I'd like to see that team for every down of the next two games ...

Sic,
"I'd like to see that team for every down of the next two games ..."
I for one have serious doubts we'll see any of that again this season.
As an idiot with a bad habit of going to the well too often, or not often enough, LaFlake just cant seem to figure it out.
Last week he throws the defense under the bus, and this week it's the offense for 'scoring too fast'! Are you kidding me?
The entire world knows what the problem is, its his buddy Joe Barry, and LaFlake just can't admit it to himself. Who's going under the bus next week? Special Teams?
If he hasn't already lost this team its coming very, very soon.
And worse yet, just what quality assistant coaches will want to work for a clown like this, my guess is not many!
Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, Matty!

Harbough is a fantastic coach. Shanahan is not really evolving, they just have a way better scouting department., you know what they’re gonna do, but can’t stop it.But Harbough was a QB, coached both college and pros and is capable of evolving with the game. He makes in game adjustments and has a creative game plan just about every game. But it was also my 2-3 look at Lamar Jackson…he can do it all and the majority of defenses don’t have an answer for him. Ravens have top to bottom talent too. I believe they will take the SB. They have absolutely destroyed Detroit and SF and I don’t think the Eagles will fair much better. But GB doesn’t have anywhere near the D coordinator talent nor the OL talent. It also seems the scouting department doesn’t even look at durability/talent…they just look at RAS and “ potential “ . Maybe Watson will prove me wrong and be durable in year 3…but I doubt it. Jury is still out on whether or not Reed will be more durable than Flowers.

Some things to consider: when you score 33 points in a game it's not the offense that's the problem. When you let a two-win team run all over your defense, that's the problem. When you have a kicker that is erratic, that's a problem.

Review his entire season. Kicking is one portion of the game that doesn't change much from college to pros. Snap, placement, kick.

The Packers must bring in a competing kicker in training camp to see if Carlson can up his game.

24/29 for 82% efficiency rate is solid for a rookie kicker. A few of the misses were an un-blocked player, two bad snap/holds which are not his domain. If Bisaccia has him short-kick it is on the coverage unit to pin the opponent
inside the twenty. If they cannot tackle on defense, expect the same on the Sp.Teams.

Carlson kicked a longer field goal didn’t he? The opponents kicker was worse in the night.

Carlson is 80% on the year. If he maintains that, he’s almost exactly at Crosby’s average percentage over the combined 21and 22 seasons. It took Crosby till his 5th year to break the 80% mark by the way.

I’m not anointing Carlson yet, but I’d have happily taken 80% as a rookie before the season. As to Douglas, it depends what we do with the pick to some extent, but to get home on a blitz, the DC has to call one. Maybe that’s a difference to ponder?

Again, the Rasul Douglas give away for no value at all, the worst part of that was Gutey telling Rasul that the offer was too good to pass up. Gutey was just desperate to make a trade, any trade.

Moving a fifth round pick up by about 40 spots into the late third round will not possibly result in as much contribution as Rasul Douglas would make. That roster mistake is FAR less than the negative impact on the locker room, telling them they're all worthless no matter how well they play.

Obviously Gutey is not a "people person." How does that impact GM duties?

Jesus, do you have another thing you can post about. He traded Douglas, and apparently hurt someone's feelings. I am delighted with the trade and the benefit to the cap, and our commitment to youth.

Honestly, get over it. He traded Douglas and secured a third round pick. He fleeced the Jets in the Rodgers trade. You neglect always to note that Gutekunst rescued Douglas from the PRACTICE SQUAD of the Cardinals. Douglas played his way into a payday, and Green Bay needed to see what these young corners can do. Rasul Douglas is not the link keeping Green Bay from a super bowl. Move on, it's tedious.

He said that this is the run pass mix he anticipated going into the season. Seemed to say the pressure (rush) increase in the second half was a reason we didn’t run as much (counterintuitive). He was not really asked directly why Jones got so few snaps. He said the QB sneak was Love changing the call based on seeing the D.

It’s “whatever it takes to win” … but not on Barry’s D. They were out there too much …. He seemed to suggest that the players didn’t want to defer when they win the toss, and that this had been an issue once earlier in the year. Maybe more to that than I’d suspected before listening.

MLF has the LONG standing habit of misusing the running game. How many times has he run #28 into a wall, 3x in a row? One of the more common mistakes in the league is to run your bell cow every play with declining results until you get a negative play. A 13 yard gain, then 7, then 2, then -3.

This is like everyone else is jumping off a cliff so you do it too. Duh. Run the ball enough so that the opposing defense has to defend it on every play because they don't know what's coming. Or run the ball about half your plays if that idea of "a balanced attack" is not only your game plan but it's also actually working.

Apparently this is all too complicated for MLF. Instead he wants to be a running team, OR an air raid offense, but he doesn't mind broadcasting which he'll do for the next 5 plays because he's such a nice guy and it's only fair to the other team.

What fun would it be to win a game in convincing fashion anyway? A winning record? MLF obviously has other priorities.

Looking at the PFFs of the oline, I can see why we didn't stick with the run. And while I've lost all faith in LaFleur as a HC, I was happy for a win we needed desperately. Not that I have any illusions thst we are a playoff worthy team this season. As per LaFleurs' rather stupid post game comment that the offense could have kept the ball a bit more to give the defense a rest late in the game, it's just another example of LaFleur defending his friend. The 33 points scored was the second highest offense production for the year. He should be congratulating them - not going out of his way to find fault.

I have no questions as to LaFleurs' ability to be a creative play designer. But his credibility as a HC is almost non existent now. Barry is just a glaring symptom of his lack of team leadership as a HC.

We deserve better. GPG

As an ex niner fan, I'm still fond of them. Shanahan runs a tight ship but his ego doesn't allow him to sign and work with top-notch QB's. (who require latitude and some decision-making). He could have had Brady until fairly recently. Brady razzed him about one of his coaching fiascos-didn't go well.

NFLfan,
As a Packer fan in 9er territory I'm not sure I can agree.
Yes Shanahan runs a tight ship, and Yes, he has an ego, which I think is commonplace and a requirement in the business, but he's not the complete ego-maniac as was Jim Harbaugh.
He hires good assistants that do good jobs, they seldom seem to miss a beat despite losing coaches to promotions annually, and he's not afraid to replace them when they don't perform. I'd be damned happy to have the Head coach and GM team that the 9ers have.
As for his ability to work with QBs, he's done quite well with Mr. Irrelevant, and I'd have a hard time believing that Brady didn't have a huge ego similar to one Aaron Rodgers. They both earned it.
I'm not, and never have been a 9er fan, but I gotta give credit where credit is due. Just sayin'.

The strength of the offense is we can get TDs through the air. Jones got the rock in the first quarter and we scored 7. He didn’t get it much in the second quarter and we scored 16.

Indeed. That's why the O line is priority #1. Whether GB runs just enough to keep opponents honest or half the plays are runs, O line is the biggest need. And teaching, evaluation, and player selection are all more important than the draft at this point.

Kraft - blocks and catches and runs, better than Musgrave - as I thought
Watson, Reed, Musgrave, Wicks - all were hurt for the Panthers game. These names do not mean a gol-darned thing in discussing MLF's play calling for the recently completed Panther game, which by the way is what is being discussed here.

We scored a Dillon rushing touch down in Q1 and a Love sneak in the second. The only first half passing TD was the one at the end of the half to Wicks. Not sure I’m seeing your point other than the fact of where the quarter ended in terms of possessions at that point.

So your argument is that the genius of LaFleur was planning on Love and a bunch of rookies thinned by injury to carry the team? For that game, that makes little sense to me, far less so for the season when Love was unproven (something exacerbated by the refusal to start him towards the end of last year) and only Doubs was on the roster of the non rb skill players out there yesterday (Melton on the PS/futures) when they planned this offense in the off season.

So you think that we've elevated Love, and added Watson, Doubs, Toure, Musgrave, Reed, Kraft,Wicks, Melton and Watson because we want to be a running team? I mean, how are you planning to move the ball downfield? Grind it out between the tackles with linemen who are better suited to pass blocking and an injured RB?

We are designed to move the ball, and score points, through the air. It's our identity. That's our jam, so to speak. And we're getting better at it all the time. Love has thrown more TDs than just about anybody else, and he's only had one interception in the last half dozen games. He has a legit shot at 30 TDs. We've slowly risen to #11 in scoring offense, one better than the Chiefs. We're 8th in fewest turnovers. This is our recipe. 27 Passing TDs, 9 rushing TDs. Twice as many yards through the air as on the ground. 182 first downs passing and 82 rushing.

Next year, it's going to be more pronounced, as every is more experienced and we'll (hopefully) have better blocking. If you're looking for a running team, or even a balanced attack, you're going to be disappointed. We'll be one of the top throwing teams in the league next year.

Progress is never a straight line up.The pit-bulls are really howling that if we could only get rid of all the coaches and management somehow we would be the premier team in the league. It doesn't work that way. One positive note from the game was Bo Melton. We know he has blazing speed. Now we know he has great hands too. But...you can't be a playmaker if they don't play you.

Merry Christmas to all Cheesehead fans!

I am finally getting on to check the website out. With Christmas its always nice to take a step back and spend some time with family and friends and get away from the every day stuff.

I was at my uncles during the game. He has 1 tv and a smaller room and I didn't get a seat in the room to watch it. So i watched it on my phone. Which of course others had to try and watch off my phone at the same time so I didn't get a great look at the game.

So these are basically my thoughts for the game.

- Jordan Love is proving to be The Guy. He led the offense which put up 33 points (albeit against the worst team in the league), but he did it without his 2 of his top 4 WRs, and his top TE. And then 1 more of his top WR's got hurt in the game and couldn't finish. The reason why I feel Love is the guy, on the final drive he was without 3 of his top 4 WR's, and he managed to find a way to get in field position to win the game.
He hasn't been perfect but on the year, but he has improved. He has put up 3587 passing yards, 27 TD's, 11 INT's, He has also added 3 Rushing TD's. He currently ranks 13th in yards, Tied for 3rd in TD's.

- The offensive staff has done a good job. I questioned earlier in the year how good the offensive coaches were. But with the way the team has progressed I believe as a whole they have been pretty good overall. The offense was supposed to be a struggle, but they have really done well especially considering they have been without their All pro LT since week 1. Their top WR, RB and TE have missed significant time. The WR group is the youngest in the league and has had to deal with a lot of injuries, yet they keep producing. This week Bo Melton really played well.
This game the coaches and LaFleur were kind of handicapped in what they could do with the players they had. Yet they found a way to win. They put up 33 points in a game that they essentially had 1 TE, 1 RB, 1 of their top 4 WR's. Offensively I thought overall it was a good showing. Not perfect, but good overall.

- The defense. I mean clearly Joe Barry will be gone at the end of the year. And that can't come soon enough. It just feels like the players are defeated to me. That they don't trust the system, that they don't trust Barry. They for the 3rd week in a row have allowed a QB to be considered for the Player of the week. Only 1 of them could be considered good. And 1 of the 3 was benched this week. I hope whoever the new DC is, can bring some much needed energy to the defense. And is a much more aggressive DC. One that will send blitzes and will mix up coverages.

- Carlson. 1st game winning FG! He has been kicking really well. Yes he had the missed extra point, but I blame the snap on that. It was impressive that Whelan even got it down. But that threw everything off.

2 games left! I hope to see more progress made in each of these last 2 games.

We're not the only ones who have noticed how badly the Packers defense has played, particularly when the Packers have a lead, and it's in the second half. And when they named the five QB's who had their best rating of the year against the Packers, it got really depressing. It's about 10 minutes long, but these guys are objective and knowledgeable.
