Cory's Corner: Could Joe Barry Change Draft Strategy?

Is it worth it to draft a defensive player high in the draft if the talent will not be utilized?

I did not and I still do not understand the reasoning behind bringing Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry back.

But just like my high school basketball coach Mark Reinemann always said, “Don’t compound a mistake with a mistake,” that’s what the Packers are on the doorstep of doing.

The NFL Draft is a month away and there’s a good chance that the Packers will take more defensive help. The Packers have taken a defensive player with the first pick in 11 of the last 12 drafts.

The Packers have athletes all over the place on that side of the ball. We saw how far Rashan Gary has come since being taken 12th overall in the 2019 draft and is now the heart and soul of this defense.

Or Kenny Clark. He has been an absolute anchor on the defensive line, despite playing alongside guys like Dean Lowry, Montravius Adams, Tyler Lancaster, Kingsley Keke and Jarran Reed. Clark is the guy that opposing offenses have to find when it comes to blocking, and he draws a double team on nearly every down.

That brings us to this year. With the departure of Aaron Rodgers, one would think that the Packers would go after some offensive firepower. But we all thought that the Packers would go offense with the first pick after the departure of Davante Adams, but Green Bay didn’t take an offensive player until the third pick.

We have all seen what general manager Brian Gutekunst likes. He loves explosive athletes that can play multiple positions. I don’t have one problem with this philosophy. We’ve seen so many multi-dimensional offensive weapons take root in the NFL from Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey to Travis Kelce. The best way for defenses to keep up is to get faster and more athletic — at all positions.

So if the Packers are going to keep Barry, there’s no reason to invest more top assets in athletes that won’t get to showcase their skills. Barry’s entire philosophy is to not let anyone behind you. So expect to see more loose coverage on third-and-3 instead of watching athletes be athletes.

So Gutekunst has a decision to make. Does he continue with his same philosophy or does he change, knowing that the athletes that he provides won’t be utilized the way that he envisioned? The fact that we are even asking this question is why Barry should not be coming back.

Which is why the Packers should lean more toward offense. Assemble more versatile threats and give whoever the quarterback is a better chance to score.

The defense did resemble a heartbeat toward the end of the season last year, but I don’t want to see more talent go to waste. It’s time to put more athletic talent to the offensive side of the ball.

I still believe that defense wins championships. But what’s the opportunity cost of not using top talent to the best of their ability?

The Packers philosophy won't change until Mark Murphy and Gutekunst are gone. It's been the same since TT took over as GM. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. That fits the Packers perfectly. Ya they have won a lot of games but the Defense and Special Teams are consistently bad and great QB play pulls out the win. Be prepared for a few lean years until they get out of the salary cap mess Gutekunst has made.

"great QB play pulls out the win"

But not in the games that mattered, though.

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results."

Which is what those of us who wanted Rodgers traded in 21 and 22 kept saying and were shouted down by the 'lovers'. To be fair, we did get a different result in 22 than in 20 and 21 - too bad it was worse than in those years.

Murphy, yes. Gute I am not so sure about. It has become pretty clear that Murphy was the decision maker on Rodgers' extension and the "play it again" theme of the last couple of years. From some of Gute's comments, it appears he was not in favor of either idea.

Gute has drafted decently (better lately) and done well in free agency. If Love works out, that would be a major plus for Gute's drafting. If not, it could be the end of his tenure in Green Bay.

I no longer believe defense wins championships.
QB is the most important position by far. Protecting him and giving him weapons is the best strategy. Offense has been increasingly favored by rules. It has become a pass first league. And scores are regularly higher, (usually 30 points per game). Lower scores usually mean poor QB's rather than great defenses.

Nolan Smith has entered the chat.

Cory, I like where you were going here, but Gary’s ACL, Preston’s not getting any younger, a lot of fans see the Packers drafting a Top EDGE rusher next month is a legit possibility. Safety is also a big red flag, especially in a passing league.

Defense wins Championships.

Like yourself, I want offensive weapons at TE, WR, RB, along with protection for Love at OT.

Reading that back I have to laugh. I want it all!!! LOL.

There’s a chance GB cleans up something like this in the AR trade and if we pick right, we might be able to get it:

13, 15, 42, 43, 45, 78, 116, 149, 170, 232, 235, 242, 256

This Packers team has holes everywhere. Despite Barry, we still need to add the very best players we can acquire, regardless of position.

The possibility exists GB will have a unique opportunity to reunite Walker, Wyatt & Stokes with Smith. 4 National Champions reunited together working all 3 levels of our Packers defense? I find that very compelling.

But, WR!!! LOL. I totally get that too, Cory! I’m right with you.

GB likely having 2 picks that high will present all kinds of interesting decisions.

You are smoking something funny if you think we will "clean up" in an Aaron Rodgers trade with the Jets. A first and two 2nds? Not a chance. Maybe we get a One this year... maybe. Either a 1st and a conditional pick in 2024/2025, if A-Rog continues to play and play at a high level, or a 2nd (plus the conditional pick).

And Nolan smith does not fit the size profile that Green Bay utilizes on it's defense. If we had fired Barry and brought in Jim Leonhard, he would have fit perfectly. But not currently. Our DE/OLB unit consists of players with much more size to play de-facto DE. Smith cannot do that against NFL DTs. Imagine what Trent Williams would do to him in the run-game...

I smoke the best, BigO!!! LOL.

Yep. Chances are we will have the DL personnel after this draft to run morph 4-3, 3-4, 2-5…

I’ve been wanting others’ thoughts on the possibility we take Nolan Smith with 13 or 15 for a while.

???

The thought of Walker, Smith & Campbell together has immense appeal considering the quality of those three players, the knowledge they have of what each will do having played together for years (adding Wyatt & Stokes to the conversation), and the scheme nightmares for opposing Os.

Those considerations have some merit. I hadn’t considered that before.

Our biggest problem is we don’t know what the Hell Barry’s doing…

I appreciate your thoughts shared. Thanks, man!

If not Nolan Smith then another "Quick Twitch" guy. The kid from Iowa State in the 2nd would be just fine with me and then drafting OFFENSE in the 1st and the other 2nd if they get both from the Jets.

I don't think they'll get 13. Maybe a pick swap AND the 2 seconds and if that was offered I'd jump on it. Talent wise Rodgers is worth more. Age, CONTRACT, & the whole will he won't he every year has really made it difficult.

Personally I see him playing 2 more years, but the Jets whether knowing it or not will use that AGAINST the Packers as part of the little leverage they have.

There's no harm waiting. Douglas AND Saleh are gone if the don't make this deal and they KNOW it because without Rodgers they finish 3rd at best in the AFC East and out of the playoffs IMO.

If Barry is out soon, opening the door for Leonhard, why wouldn’t you want to take a defender as highly rated & regarded as Nolan Smith?

The guy is a special player.

Seriously, your line of thinking is aligned with my own first thoughts on Smith. I’m just considering what that might look like.

A lot of arguments for O, with this being a passing league kind of goes right to the importance of adding premium pass rush. Finding players dynamic enough to do that and shut down the run? Cover the middle of the field? Top TEs?

41 QB Hurries, 12 QB Hits, 12 sacks, 20 TFL, 3 sacks, 3 PD, 1 INT, 3 FF, 1 FR over 3 years aligned outside Tackle almost exclusively.

And, that’s on a great defense with a lot of other great players gobbling up stats…

If you look at recent history, your compensation argument goes right out the window. Russel Wilson, Matt Stafford, and a deeply flawed DeShaun Watson give lie to your assessment.

The Packers would be better off having Rodgers retire than giving him away.

Lukas Van Ness, Felix Anudike, Will McDonald, Derick Hall, and Isaiah McGuire are my top EDGE prospects in the first two rounds or so. Best of all would be we use our 3rd to trade up and draft Myles Murphy. That dude is insane.

IMO, if we want a pure speed rusher I would go after Will McDonald. He is fast, uses his arms better, is a bit heavier, and is stronger and less injury prone. I don’t know how Smith would handle a transition to the 3-4

We do not need any RBs. Jones and Dillon are one of the best duo in the league, and Goodson is a good #3 RB. I don’t know why so many people think it’s a need. If jones was cut I could see that, but he is coming back.

If we want WR I would get Cedric Tillman in round 2. Great hands - barely has any drops. Good in all facets of the game. A great #2 opposite C-Wat

Though I moved 40 years ago, I remain an Iowa fan and watch every game. It was apparent to me that T.J. Hockenson would be good, Micah Hyde would be good, Noah Fant was overrated, Josh Jackson was WAY overrated and Lukas Van Ness is no more than a 3rd rounder. Gute will maybe draft him because of his RAS, but I'm not high on him. They have TE Sam Laporta, who I like, and CB Riley Moss who I like, but please don't take Van Ness early. He only played about half the teams snaps, and has one move, a power rush, which won't cut it in the NFL.

Starting with Lombardi’s first championship, which I watched, every one of our 7 championships had a top 5 defense. Doesn’t matter if it was Favre or Rodgers a very good defense seemed to be able to shut down our offense in the playoffs many times. The key is having a very good DC, which Barry isn’t, that puts in a scheme that utilizes the strengths of the players.
People forget that Lombardi was an offensive guy, Phil B. was an outstanding defensive coach and doesn’t get near the credit for the Lombardi years.
Quit hiring your buddies and start hiring talent as coaches, as we finally did with ST last year

Two HOF guys on the '96 squad's defense, another on the 2010 team with the acquisition of Woodson. I don't see a Game Changer on the current lineup. Best they put the resources on a RT, WRs and TEs. An Edge guy early and add another mid-rounds. This defense is not a crew that takes names.

It would help the defense immensely, to have an offense that can move the chains, score in the red zone, and own the time of possession. We didn't see to much of that last year. Three passes out of shotgun and punt.

And yet the Packers had an average TOP per game of 31.90 minutes per game in 2022. The Packers ranked #8 in the league for average TOP per game.
The defense was on the field for 28 minutes or less per game when you factor in STs time on the field.

Are we saying that we can't play defense effectively for about 25-27 minutes per game? Are we saying that men in their 20s in excellent physical condition are getting tired in that period of time and many of the defensive players are not even 3 down players? That's ridiculous.

I might agree if the Packers offense had a TOP of 25 minutes per game. But that's not the case, not even close.

What would our defense be if they played every down as Lombardi's defense did back in the 60s. No nickels, dimes or whatever. No rotation on the DL. They played every down on every series. This idea that our defense is on the field too much is ridiculous and has been for years.

The problem with the defense is that they consistently have trouble stopping the run, they can't get off the field on 3rd down, they are terrible on 3rd and long and the secondary is playing too far off the LOS. Beyond that they don't play aggressively or with any sense of urgency and the tackling is terrible. This shows up in the results, such as 17th in points allowed in 2022.

I'm not saying that our offense should not score more points because they should have in 2022 but time of possession is not the issue. Not to mention that TOP is a misleading stat because our offense could be scoring 35 points per game but doing that on quick scoring plays and not spending very much time on the field. In that case should they give the points back if they are not on the field long enough?

It's not a matter of TOP. It's a matter of the defense making stops at key moments in a game. Such as when the Packers score and take a lead in a game. That is the point when the defense needs to get a stop, preferably a 3 and out and get the ball back to the offense so that the Packers can build upon the lead. However far too often after a Packers score we see the opponent come right back down the field and score on our defense. This happens far too often and it's been an issue with the Packers defense going all the way back to the TT/McCarthy era. Thank, Since '61

Unfortunately, I suspect MLF wants nothing to do with the defense and Joe Barry allows him to ignore that side of the ball. You can delegate authority but you can't delegate responsibility. Until MLF actually takes responsibility for HIS defense, we will most likely continue to struggle on that side of the ball because problems don't normally solve themselves.

Yes I’ve been posting here since the middle of last year Barry has shown his milk toast philosophy that matches nicely with MLF milk toast management style. Takes one to know one, Barry was his guy!

When you have enough talent to risk playing lots of press man when you need it and you’re Mr Zone…the head coach should have sat him down and whipped some aggression into Barry The Coward of the County! But that would have required MLF to grow a pair…no I’m not optimistic that the leopard will change his spots 😢. Either of them!

`If the Packers don't complete the Rodgers trade by the draft I believe that they should trade down out their #15 pick for a #2 and #3. The Packers have numerous needs and the more picks that they can acquire to meet those needs the better. If we trade out of the first round and get 2 picks for the #15 we will have 4 picks from the top 100 players in the draft. Plus we have 11 picks total in the draft. That is assuming that we don't make any other moves.

If the Packers can actually close the deal with the Jets and acquire their #13 pick I would still trade down from #15 in the first. Failing that but we acquire both of the Jets second round picks I would wait to see who is available at #15 and still possibly trade down from #15 which would result in the Packers having 6 picks from the top 100 players in the draft.

Every picks counts and the draft is a crap shoot but the more picks that we can have from the top 100 players increases our chances of hitting on players who can begin contributing during their first 2 seasons rather than waiting 3-4 seasons for them to become contributors. 2023 and 2024 are drafts where the Packers need both quality and quantity from their drafts. The more picks they can acquire the better as they build the team around Jordan Love.
Thanks, Since '61

There is something called the NFL Trade Value chart. A version of it is used by all 32 NFL teams. It assigns a numerical value to each pick in the draft. There are no combination of picks in Rounds 2 and 3 that come remotely close to the value of the #15 pick in Round 1. Even the very first picks in both those rounds don't carry nearly the same value. And "every team uses a trade value chart." If Houston wanted to move up and get a 3rd pick in the top 15, they would have to offer their 2nd and both of their 3rd round picks (and we would have to include our compensatory pick at the end of Round 5 to balance the value of the deal). That's how the Trade Value Chart works.

Now, moving down to a later pick in Round 1 and gaining an extra 3rd round pick matches the value quite well. In fact, it is possible to trade down twice in Round 1 and gain two 3rd round picks. That would have value. Of course, Gutekunst has a history of missing badly on his 3rd round picks. But, let's assume we get the Jets 2nd round pick for A-Rog (and a conditional pick in 2024), if we trade down twice in Round 1, we would have six of the top 90-100 picks in this draft. As you stated, more picks in the top 100 would be important.

Corey

There is hope for you yet. You are not at the Pulitzer level but you are headed in the right direction.

The best we can expect from the Pack this coming year is 8-9, even with an easier schedule. This will not be playoff level. (I'm factoring in Love's learning curve, the fact that Rodgers propped up LaFleur as a head coach, and of course the Joe Barry curve.)

It is time to move the old guard out and bring in fresh young recruits. Face it 8-9 yields the same results as 5-12. Let's move Bahktiari now for a #2 and #3. He will only play a dozen games anyway. And dumping him now helps repair the cap space. Send him to the Jets.

While we are at it add the overrated Clark to the trade pile. We might get a #2 and #3 for him. Being the anchor for this defensive line isn't saying much. Again dumping Clark repairs the cap situation. Send him to the Wattless Cardinals.

Finally let's move Alexander while he is still worth a #1, #2, and #3. There were cracks in the armor last year and they will continue to show moving forward. The Texans will give us their #1 #2 #3 for Alexander.

There you have it. I've fixed the salary cap situation and with J. Love we will go 5-12. Love is the real deal?

Of course we still are stuck with LaFleur, and Barry. But they are both high quality coaches hampered by Gutekunst. Can we trade Gutekunst, Barry and LaFleur for a #7? I think so. We might have to throw in Lowry. Oops Lowry is already gone. How about Starr or Favre? Dig one up, get the other from the penitentiary. GPG.

I agree about trading Bakhtiari, but I don’t for Clark and Alexander.

The “help” we got Clark last year was not enough. I believe he was playing through injury, too. If we draft a DT this year, coupling that with the development of Wyatt and Slaton should leave us one of the better DLs in the league. Also, he is just entering his prime. KEEP KENNY!

And yeah, while we’re at it, let’s trade Alexander, who set a career high in interceptions (5) and was one away from leading the league! All we saw last year was a shift in play style. Instead of being the lockdown cover corner of 2020 (that only got 1 INT), he played more like a gambler at CB, like Trevon Diggs or Marcus Peters, who tries to get lots of INTs and make plays. KEEP JAIRE!

I am on board with trading MLF. Not Gutey. I have liked most of his drafting. MLF doesn’t have the leadership to win a championship as an NFL HC. Promote Bissacia.

The defense needs to add an edge rusher and maybe a safety or two, otherwise this is the unit that started to come on strong toward the end of last year. It's pointless to talk about replacing Barry, he's coming back. Now the Packers will hope to get more out of the defense next season.

The draft, especially the first round, is always about 'who is available'. It would not surprise me if they take an edge rusher or safety #1 as there are candidates in both areas who are worthy of that high of a draft position.

The tight end draft pool is very deep this year so that might not be addressed until the third round.

I'll need my blood pressure pills before the draft because once again we'll draft DLs, CBs, & LBs. But WRs? TEs? Offensive players? Not until the later rounds. It's a Guter/Murphy pattern that they can't break out of. Yea, someone will say need, need, need, but if we would've drafted offensive needs, AR would've had more top 1st rounder receivers. Instead, now they are traded away, go to FAgency, or not signed. Where are those BP pills, anyway?

Just my opinion, but if I’m Gute I’m looking to draft Preston and Bahks replacements as well as add a stud Dl and a wr with speed. Obviously Te is a need and this draft is deep in Te and. Edge talent. If the Jets trade happens and they can’t get #13 hopefully they can get both #2s and Jermaine Johnson. That eliminates the need to draft an edge and put them in play for a top Te ( Darnell Washington ) and a top wr ( Jaylin Hyatt ) .

So the general manager should be tiptoeing around an assistant coach's implausible schemes? I don't think so! Draft players that should be able to thrive in any system, and that includes the one beyond Barry. If the defense starts the way it did last season, then it's squarely on MLF to make changes that does maximize the talent we've assembled.

I have to hope that Jerry Gray was part of the problem last year.

His disagreement with Barrys schemes might have caused some confusion in the DB's minds and led to some of the miscommunication that was apparent.

Not that Gray is a better or worse coach than Barry, just that not having the D staff on the same page cannot be good for the team.

Football is a TEAM game where it helps to have talented players, but even great talent cannot single-handedly win games or championships. It takes buy in from all members of the team on the field to gain a successful result.

If Barry is inevitable, I hope the staff pulls together and gives the players a solid scheme to execute.

I never understood why people say the more draft picks the Better! Let's say you have 12 draft picks! And you really nail it on ten of them. They all turn out to be stars! Then 4 years from now how do you plan to pay them all?

I believe Matt LaFleur made a mistake by retaining Barry and I think about 80 percent of the guys on this website feel the same. There were a few solid defensive coaches available during this off season and LaFleur elected to pass on them all and go with Barry. In doing that LaFleur has put himself closer to the hot seat and if Barry continues with that "soft" defense that we have had to watch for the last few years, he may find himself on the "hot seat" if Barry and the defense falters badly and the Packers come away in third or fourth place in the NFC North.

"But we all thought that the Packers would go offense with the first pick after the departure of Davante Adams, but Green Bay didn’t take an offensive player until the third pick."

Oh, I thought Watson (offensive weapon) was drafted in 2nd round. But, I may be wrong. So, we trade our two 2nd for a 3rd round pick. Very odd move...

Okay so you have the chance to draft Donald, but wait he cant play multiple positions so you pass on him and pick some other yahoo who you move around and the guy is okay but only okay. Whereas you passed on a HOF and possibly one of the best defensive players in NFL history.
That's my problem with Gutt philosophy. He likes guys who can move around because they play cheap ball and this allows them to avoid free agents who want money. If you have a guard who can play some tackle or center then your getting your moneys worth but the guy aint great at either position.
I look at the Harrison Smith of the Vikes. Solid safety for 12 seasons and probably HOF. They picked him in the first and saw quality and he filled a hole for a long time. I believe if you have a leak you fix it the right and the problem is solved. Undrafteds and 6th rounders dont fix leaks. Every draft mistake leads to more mistakes.

Not sure what you mean by “cheap ball”. I think GB has handed out some pretty big 2nd contracts to its own guys, and when they actually had the cap room, they paid the Smith bros, Amos, and Turner some good $ as well. Right now they don’t have the cap room, so, is that what you mean by “cheap”?
If you look at the teams that pay their QB’s $40 million plus, you’ll see that they’ve got some lower paid guys too. They have to.

Is it really advantageous to have Smith and Gary drop into coverage? Oh, sure, it makes GB “unpredictable”. But are they any good at it? I’d rather see them play like 4-3 defensive ends and just rush on passing downs. Heck, if “unpredictability” is so desirable, they could still drop every once in awhile.

I know that nickel is played far more than their base 3-4, but I think with those two at defensive end, they could make 4-3 their base pretty easily.
