Cory's Corner: Jaire Alexander Situation Is Weird

One of the better corners in the league has to decide if he really wants to be in Green Bay.

Jaire Alexander has been an enigma wrapped in a riddle.

He suffered a shoulder injury when he dove for a tipped pass in a Week 9 win over the Rams. That was on Nov. 5.

He has been inactive for the last five games and didn’t even travel on Monday night’s game to the Meadowlands.

The reason why it’s confusing is because it would’ve been better off if he was just placed on injured reserve if he could not go. If a player goes on IR during the season, players must miss a minimum of four games.

Now, obviously, the reason why Alexander wasn’t placed on IR was because Packers coach Matt LaFleur and others thought he could make a return before then. It’s a gamble, but it’s something that the coaching staff and the player have to be on the same page about.

Alexander has to be honest about how severe the injury is and the Packers have to be honest about how much they need him right away vs. later on in the season.

Things have gotten a little weird about this entire situation. What needs to happen now is LaFleur needs to have a difficult conversation with the two-time Pro Bowler that has proven that he can be one of the better corners in the game.

LaFleur needs to ask Alexander if he wants to be here. He needs to ask him if he buys into the culture and what the Packers are doing. He needs to ask him if he believes in where the Packers are going.

Maybe Alexander isn’t a big fan of defensive coordinator Joe Barry or his weird and flimsy philosophy. The Packers have been using weird formations all season, including playing two defensive linemen near the goal line and the age-old issue of defensive backs playing at least four yards off a receiver on obvious passing downs.

I don’t care that Alexander talked while injured and I don’t care that he signed a four-year, $84 million contract last May. This simply has to do with whether or not Alexander truly wants to be in Green Bay or not.

The Packers have one of the youngest rosters in the league and they cannot afford to have someone on the team that doesn’t want to be there.

This is a moment for LaFleur. He has a chance to implement a culture around team and transparency. Even if Alexander’s shoulder is unbearable, he needed to communicate that to the Packers so they could’ve made arrangements for the rest of the season. Keeping a roster spot warm for a guy that isn’t going to play is beyond frustrating.

What kind of team does LaFleur want? The rest of the locker room is watching.

It's similar to David Bakhtiari's situation, signed a long-term deal, got hurt, and lives in never-never land.

I suspect he's hurt but it could be the player is wanting to come back but has a medical issue that simply isn't fixing itself.

This coming March is clean house time again for the Packers. It might be time to find a trading partner for Alexander, too, if one can be found.

Both Alexander and Stokes, the starters a couple of years ago, have been gone and not really missed as strange as that seems.

TK, we'll find out sooner than maybe we'd like to.
As it stands today, the Packers have under $7M in cap space with only 42 players under contract for next season. That $7M will barely cover the draft picks. Where's the money to fill out the roster to 53? Part of that question was answered when they jettisoned Douglas.
Heads are going to roll, and they should start with Murphy, Gutey, and Ball.

By the way, what in the hell IS wrong with Jaire's shoulder? No one says anything specific about it. Just " shoulder injury. " What the hell is that? He hasn't played for five weeks. . . and all anyone says is " shoulder injury. " In a recent interview with Jaire in the locker room, what? half a dozen fucking reporters never asked him once, " So, specifically, in detail, can you describe what is wrong with your shoulder? " Weird, man, just fucking weird. And the guy is being paid a bundle!

I really don't give a shit whether Jaire wants to play for the Packers or not. I just wanna know what the hell, specifically, medically, is wrong with his fucking shoulder.

I agree Fireball, let's hear it, what's the problem!
After hearing about LaFleur's supposed frustration with Alexander, I think he's bucking for a trade.
What 'Good' cornerback wants to play in Barry's system where you're set up for failure and made to look inept?
All through the off-season we were hearing about the 'New, more aggressive" defense but what did we get? The Same Old Shit!
Maybe Alexander is fed up.

Jaire has been dinged all season, yet the other starting CB is traded for chicken feed and Nixon reads the QB while Robinson runs right past him for the Big Play as the clock winds down in the Meadowlands. You alluded to the recommended solution in your previous posting. Kleen Haus.

Typically teams do not go into details. Sometimes a player will. When was the last time the Packers said anything clear about anyone injured? The best we get is a vague description and timeline if it’s one that’s obvious, unless a player is hospitalized (Musgrave) or speaks to media about his condition.

Marty Bennett...Z...now it also appears Bakht feels entitled to clip $million dollar coupons. I hope Alexander is not of the same mindset. It seems he hates Barry Ball...don't blame him. As one of the best coverage CBs in the NFL, his misuse would be akin to demanding Rodgers run the veer O.

But he took all the gold knowing what the D was going to be. Maybe he thought there was no way Barry would remain. He obviously did not know MLF's aversion making difficult decisions. But he signed the K in return for $million work. He showing abysmal character if his injuries are a protest.

I agree, Cory, it's time to fish or cut bait, While Alexander has displayed the abilities to be a ProBowl corner, he's also been beaten (often enough) on easy plays he should have made for a guy being paid what he is. I personally think that when you look at his career thus far, he has talked a better game than he's played. He'd be a hell of a lot better if his play had kept up with his mouth. And now, with the questions and swirling rumors about the 'injury', it gets more complicated. If this would lead to another trade, do the Packer wind up with more Dead Cap money? That would not be good.
As for Stokes, I like the kid, thought he played well early and then the injuries took over. Another Kevin King at this point, maybe better than King, but just as injury prone. Maybe bad luck!
As for the (my) third part; 'Joe Barry's Weird Defense", please tell me WHEN you've seen the D-Backs playing four yards off a receiver on obvious passing downs, to me it seems to be more like fourteen. Somewhere, Charles Woodson and Al Harris (along with every other Corner Back worth his salt) are shaking their heads in complete disgust, and rightfully so!

**Edit**
"IF" they wind up trading Alexander, and "IF" they wind up with more Dead Cap because of it, do you think that would put a dent in all the armor Gutey seems to have accumulated over the 3-game win streak? I doubt it, not with Murphy in charge!

Has 'Who' commented on the Douglas trade? Alexander? Gutey? LaFleur?
Mike Tiricco said on the Pre-game prior to Monday night's game that LaFleur was frustrated with Alexander.
Would they have made that trade if they knew Alexander would be out this long? If that trade pissed off Jaire, too bad, get back on the field and prove your worth like Douglas did. "Let's see what-choo got"
WE miss Douglas, and he WANTED to be here!

"I was pretty surprised to say the least," Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander said Wednesday, via The Athletic, when asked about Douglas being traded to the Bills. "I was surprised. I actually found out this morning coming into work. I made sure I texted him right away. I didn't expect Rasul to be gone. He's vet who has made a bunch of plays in his time here, but that's just the NFL."

Right after the trade.

mnbadger,
Yeah, maybe we traded the wrong guy.
But, who's going to want an often-injured, $21M per year cornerback with an ego problem? Who can afford him at this time of the year, or at any time?
I see this; Jonathan Owens played a couple really good games, then Savage and Ford come back and Owens hits the bench. The Packers get embarrassed by the Giants, with both Ford and Savage not looking good. I firmly believe that Owens would have stopped, or at least shortened some of Tommy Cutlet's runs.
Is what we have a coaching issue? Barry's still there!
I'll say it again, What DB worth his salt would want to play in Barry's system?

In real terms there was zero need to trade Douglas, but the Gute Show sure as hell created a need on a defense that generates few turnovers. Douglas provided some leadership in that regard. Barry was probably fronted up and exposed so went running to mommy LaFleur. Another hay wired circuit, created by the brain trust. People will try to defend these frauds until the day they pack up their desk and are shown the door @ dawn, like sherman...

Added the sherman clause for dramatic effect. He was notified that Texas A &M shit-canned him, in the living room by a high school player he was recruiting. He even took a fast ride out of the High School league. The players couldn't relate to the guy.

I've been wondering whether or not Jaire wants to play in Green Bay for a few weeks now. He's had shoulder problems but he's also had a back injury. He appears on the injury report as light practice but then is scratched for before every game.

When healthy he's been an excellent CB for the Packers but this season he just has not been available whether his injury is more serious than has been publicly stated or because he is hesitant to return to the field. At this point it's a bit of a mystery.

I remember that Tramon Williams lost nearly an entire season when he hurt his should beck in 2011 and he was never really the same player when he finally returned.

The least that the Packers can do as an organization is explain exactly what is Jaire's injury and when they expect him to be ready to play. If they don't tell the true story the media and fans will make it up as they have already begun to do. Thanks, Since'61

Back in November 2021 a group of players went to Barry and asked him to let them play to their strengths and more aggressively. One known to have been involved was Jaire. Shortly afterward LaFleur came out saying soft off coverage neither okayed to the strengths of our players or was acceptable as a regular ploy.

Last year there were rumored to be similar grumbling. This year it seems there may be more frustrations. It’s impossible to know, but maybe the players see Barry’s scheme as not fun to play and career suppressing?

I’ve no idea if there’s an iota of truth in the suggestion that Jaire is anything other than hurt. I will say from experience that tackling with some shoulder injuries is impossible not only painful, because the strength isn’t there.

Ultimately though, I would expect continual futility to raise player issues, especially after repeated promises that things will be different only for that not to be the reality. This is the type of thing that happens when players lose faith in coaches and by that it would be both Barry and LaFleur who backs him and does nothing to change things.

Keeping a poor staff has real consequences for team attitude and morale. It would not shock me if similar feelings existed within the OL group either. Ironically, LaFleur may have been helped by the large number of young players, but there are still vets, particularly in these groups.

Purely speculative, but hardly a reach as a possibility in a general organizational sense.

Coldworld I agree with you and I think that we at least need to allow for the possibility that Jaire is not happy with either the coaching or his own situation in Green Bay. It would explain why the Packers have not provided any details about Jaire's injury or when he may return to play.

Of course over the years the Packers have been notoriously quiet about the status of player injuries and numerous players have missed more time than was originally expected when the injury occurred.

Bottom line we just need to wait and see how it plays out. I would have thought that by this point someone in the media would have made an effort to try to get to the bottom of this with Jaire. Thanks, Since '61

Yes CW. Leadership 101. I am not as concerned about Alexander's possible protesting by tanking...that is a cancerous enough...I am more concerned about what is going on in the locker room in total behind all the public platitudes.

I hope MLF is not losing the team. Barry cannot be helping. And MLF seems unable to help his DC...or his OC for that matter with the O game plans and OL dysfunction.

Patrick, I agree with what you said. We don’t know a lot about the injury. It is unfair to label the player without the facts.

However, it is fair to question the issue as to why a player who has been out over 5 weeks wasn’t placed on the IR for the 4 week period which gives the team roster flexibility. This is clearly a medical and communication issue within the organization and with the player. He doesn’t appear close to return or so it appears. This is usually a “cautious” front office with injuries. Yet this has been different.

But the flip side could be that he's milking it, and maybe that's why LaFleur is reportedly frustrated, but we don't know that either.

I can't see LaFleur confronting anyone. He publicly says that the defense showed soft coverage at end of the loss to the Giants. Who knows what happens behind closed doors though we see the same soft defense all year. Lifelong Packer fan here though I hope at the end of the year we see a cleansing. Matt and most of his coaches gone. Alexander talks a big game but has not been the same from two years ago. I said last year that he shies away from a hit due to his often-injured shoulder. As mentioned above, the young secondary is starting to play well. In 2024 we will see several starters gone. Nothing new with NFL teams. Beat the Bucs, please.

Agreed 132,
If LaFleur had any balls Barry wouldn't be there.
My fear would be that some good players get jettisoned because Barry's (make that LaFleur's) system didn't accurately show their worth.
All pro athletes have egos, and being forced to play in a shit-system has to be extremely frustrating. CBs love to play bump-n-run. Safeties like to hit people. In Barry's system you back off, give up an easy 8 yds, or let the receivers get a 14 yard head start and then play catch-up hoping to get the right angle. F#%K!

Respectfully, Houndog, you must have me confused with another poster regarding reminders of coaching staff intelligence.

As far as the medical staff, well, I thought that's how the process works; the medical staff makes decisions on what's best for players recovery so they can be healthy players later in the season, or semi-functional humans when they crawl away from the game. I could be wrong.

I haven't heard LaFleur was reportedly unhappy with Alexander.

You're right. He should strive for permanent lifetime injuries because he makes millions of dollars.

Have you ever had shoulder or back injuries, sh?

I have had shoulder injuries, and in some cases they take time to heal...
However I was regulated to Local Hosp, and 80s physical therapy technology....
NFL players today have access to most scientific, therapeutic, healing devices and technologies probably ever created...
JA is a showman first, good football player second, I dont know him, but I also dont see him playing hurt.... like many football players do.
Lets not forget JA was not playing very well before he went down..
The great Packer teams and great teams and players of the 80s were not concerned with permanent life time injuries, playing with a cast on your arm was an honor, not to mention a club to use on an opponent helmet.....

A dislocated shoulder or shoulder separation are very painful injuries as I have experienced both, just moving your shoulder to a certain position (even without pressure) can bring immediate pain. It is easy to understand that when a CB has to come up and tackle that he has to use the shoulder with full force in addition as I said just getting the shoulder in a specific position could also effect his movements in covering the pass. There is no reason at this time to doubt his injury status based on his history nor expect the team to go into detail on the extent of the injury from a competitive or NFL injury report legal compliance stance. Just let it play out.

If Alexander doesn't want to be in Green Bay then why did he agree to a four year contract?

It could have something to do with $$,$$$,$&$, but you still bring up an excellent point. One that is conveniently ignored in the article. Guess it didn’t fit the narrative for the peanut gallery.

Hermatite
"then why did he agree to a four year contract"?
Money comes to mind, or maybe because he bought into the same bullshit promise LaFleur made to the fans of a "New, more aggressive defense".
It didn't happen, it's the same old "play soft and give them plenty of room" defense Barry brought with him when he arrived. Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? Is that light an oncoming train?

Green Bay is a small town and I feel the interconnectedness with everyone prevents the neutrality one needs to be a brave and honest reporter, an objective coach, etc.
Someone like Belichik could manage to stand alone and risk being ostracized but Matt cannot. The local reporters have the same meekness.

Re: Jaire. He comes across as overly self-important, (which is off-putting to me) as does Bakhtiari, as did Rodgers. I don't see that attitude w/Jalen Hurts, Pat Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow.

Only the team doctors and Alexander himself know whether he can play or not. He may not be rushing back because he tried that earlier, hurt himself worse, and ended up missing more time. He might be a slow healer. Truth is, we don't know. Does he want to be in Green Bay? That is one question. Does he want to keep playing with an inept defensive coordinator who should have been fired last year? That is a better question. It seems defense, especially the DL sometimes just doesn't play as hard because they feel they are being put in position to fail, not succeed, by the same inept DC. For example, there are times when Clark clearly dominates the line, while he also seems to disappear for long periods of time in the game. This is, of course, speculation. But I think the entire defense would like to have someone they believe in. But then again, we've been saying that for years, and the ineptitude continues. This is where someone needs to step in, talk to LaFleur, and tell him he either gets rid of the underperforming assistants, or is shown the door, and lets the new head coach bring in his own staff. Look at the difference in Denver since Payton came in, and the team finally bought into his system.

---Your second sentence answers the question of wether he wants to be here or not. More proof is his last game 11/5, he made--7 TKLS-- and reinjured his shoulder.
---We are not getting rid of a 26 year old pro bowl CB.

Ricky,
Unfortunately, in GB everyone reports to Murphy ala his power-monger move when he put Gutey in place as GM.
So, the only one able to give LaFleur any ultimatums is Murphy, and he was the one that chased LaFleur. Murphy is too busy playing Real Estate Mogul and way too proud of himself to admit he was wrong and fire LaFleur.
He'll ride it out until he is forced to retire in July of '25 and dump it in someone else's lap

"I don’t care that Alexander talked while injured and I don’t care that he signed a four-year, $84 million contract last May."

I certainly don't want a bunch of dead money hanging over our head with Alexander, so that $84 million dollar contract is something I care about and I think Ball and the management in Green Bay does as well. We are seeing how much of our cap is being eaten up by Aaron Rodgers leaving and with David Bakhtiari's injury keeping him off the field. The big money guys are paid big money because they are expected to perform at a high level on the field and it's important that they be there.

Ferrari-Driver,
I agree for the most part, but there's been a lot of mention of Bahktiari here today. I think someone has to mention that Bahktiari's big contract came BEFORE he had had any serious injury, before that he had missed only a number of games in his career.
Alexander missed a good share of 2021and wasn't as good in 2022 before getting the big contract. As I see it, any potential Cap Hit falls squarely on management.

Neither the team nor the player owe anyone anymore details about a player injury than what is required by the NFL on the injury report.

1) Divulging medical information about a player injury can give competitors an advantage
2) Divulging medical information about a player injury does not create any advantage for the team or player
3) Divulging medical information about a player can have long term ramifications on the player's career
4) Medical information about a player is still considered privileged information
5) Despite how badly you want to know.. it's none of your damn business

It's funny how the whole "something fishy is going on with Jaire Alexander" thing wasn't a thing until a couple days ago when Gary Ellerson said something fishy is going on with Jaire Alexander, and now EVERYBODY is acting like they personally suspected something fishy is going on with Jaire Alexander.

Sports media are herd animals.

This thought crossed my mind a few weeks ago when I heard chatter about the hoodie possibly being fired at season’s end. I don’t think it’s likely, and despite Belichick being a defensive genius I’m not Sure I’d like it, but it would be unexpected and definitely interesting!

My opinion is Alexander despises Barry's prevent (the win) defense...mostly because it fails to showcase his talent, and tarnishes his brand of being a lockdown man corner. He is simply not a good zone corner defending in space. Barry Ball is highlighting that he is not a well rounded CB. Man to man, he's your man. Zone? Throw into his zone with success.

Barry does not care because the prevent (the win) defense is the only way he will go and how Alexander will play so the petulant CB is going to just say no. What is MLF going to do, cut him?

I expect Alexander has voiced his displeasure to Barry over how he is being showcased. That obviously went nowhere. I expect complaining to MLF was buried too. What's a disgruntled All Pro CB to do? Refuse to play and be docked $millions? Or inflate injury issues and clip the coupons?

We all know the Packer's medical staff is extremely cautious. It would be easy for Alexander to get their support to rest his "painful" shoulder or back or whatever for another week.

MLF is certainly not going to challenge the medical staff. That's unfortunate, if true.

But if Alexander is tanking in protest to how he personally is being used, I understand it, but it is poor character.

IMHO, the Packers tend to overpay their best D players simply because their defense as a whole is subpar overall as a group. Alexander is a perfect example of this. And while Kenny Clark is good, is he really worth the big salary? Hopefully, Gary will stay productive with his big salary but who knows?

Maybe big salaries for stand out players has to occur in GB now because GB may have again turned into a less desirable destination for players? Not sure? But, if u had to gamble your career as a defensive star playing for Joe Barry, would coming to GB be an easy decision? Maybe if the money is exceptional? Otherwise, why risk your short, tenuous career earnings on a team/coach(es) that are questionable?

Reading the comments on this thread, it’s amazing how many “fans” think they’re entitled to know the injury details of players and their automatic assumption that players on big time contracts are withholding their services and could play. Alexander is not as thick as may other CB’s and playing the run is not going to be as good as it was before with healthy pain free shoulders. If he is “protesting” by withholding his services over Barry, he does need to be traded but his trade value will be less if the team airs his dirty laundry. So, either way, the team needs to keep mum.

Trade value is certainly diminished over issues of being disaffected and airing dirty laundry. Trade value is equally diminished over issues of health and injury status. There's a big chunk of an $84 million number that also complicates a trade.
-
Although it is really none of our business, some honesty with the team would have been better in this whole situation. If it is that bad, go on IR and let the roster churn and the team can make some necessary roster moves. That's doing right by the team.
-
I think every factor is playing its part in this. A quite possible true nagging injury (however serious and long term) and a true nagging disgust with his DC for not playing him the way he wants to be played. He's waiting for the change that most of us have been waiting for. So, how does a team handle someone like that?

I posted during the our "Defcon" stretch look for established high achieving vets (Jaire was specifically mentioned) to look for an out of 1265 with the ship sinking. Then we won 3 straight, only to flop again against NY. Will be real interesting to see how this plays out...I would speculate if he is able to play during the last few games...could there be an internal agreement in place where he plays to maximize his trade value this offseason in a win-win move?

I don’t think he’s the biggest problem they have. There are 4 winnable games left. Does anyone really believe that the MLF/ Joe Barry/ Rich Bisaccia combo will get this team in the playoffs?
If it was me with Alexander, I’d put him on IR for the rest of the season. End of distraction, better for his shoulder. And the drop off to Valentine isn’t noticeable, if there is a drop off.
Deal with Bahktiari, Alexander and anyone else in the off-season.

Are we to think that all these many weeks he's lost he's been telling the team, "Yeah, it's getting better, I think I'll be able to play this week." Then when it comes to game day decisions it is, "Nope, sorry, still bad. Maybe next week."

An injury bad enough to put one out for this many weeks should have been addressed with an IR status.

Instead of trading Rasoul he should have offed this often injured cornerback Jaire Alexander. He's never on the field.
