Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Post-Super Bowl LV Edition

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Super Bowl Blahs:

This was easily the least interested I've ever been in watching a Super Bowl game - and that goes all the way back to the very first one, before it was called the Super Bowl. There are two main reasons, I guess. I'm sick of Tom Brady, and I'm still very much pissed that the Packers blew that game against the Bucs with a litany of self-inflicted mistakes and bad decisions. Would the Packers have destroyed the Chiefs like the Bucs did? I don't think so - there is little comparison between the two defenses. But would the Packers have won a high-scoring affair? I'm convinced they would have.

The One:

If I had to pick one moment from the Packers - Bucs NFC Championship game that will stay with me forever, it's the Scotty Miller TD. It deserves a nickname to be remembered in the annals of bad Packers history. The F*King Failure?  Any suggestions?

Help for Some fellow CHTV fans:

This young couple (HS Sweethearts from Door County and wife 9 months pregnant with their first child), were involved in a horrific hit-and-run car accident at 65 MPH and miraculously, all survived. They could use some financial help replacing their totaled car and paying other bills related to the accident. If you are able to help with a donation of any size, that would be wonderful. Just click on the image below to go to their gofundme page and read their full story.

Joe Barry Hiring:

Here's how I am processing this. At the moment they were hired, I knew as much about Joe Barry as I did about Matt LaFleur. Both had some less than stellar things on their resume. I'm not going to assume anything about Joe Barry, I'm just going to wait and watch.

The RIC:

Hey, have you heard the latest about Aaron Rodgers? Of course you have, because there's an entire industry being built around one Aaron Charles Rodgers. Rumors, falsehoods, innuendo, speculation, scandal... click, click, click, click... You've probably heard of the Draft Industrial Complex, made popular years ago by our own Aaron Nagler and shortened to "The DIC" this year by Corey Behnke. So I'm proposing "The RIC" AKA the Rodgers Industrial Complex. Saves time and words..

Offensive Line:

I thought the Packers offensive line played poorly against the Bucs defense, but after seeing how the Bucs destroyed the Chief's offensive line, I'd have to revise that and say they probably did as well as could be expected without David Bakhtiari.

Bucs Defense in three words:

Speed, Physicality, Intimidation. These are all the traits that I've been saying the Packers defense has lacked for close to ten years now. Some strides have been made the last two years, but face it, the Packers' defense still looks downright soft and slow compared to the Bucs. If there are traits I'm looking for in this year's defensive draft prospects, these are at the top of the list.

How about a timely "King's Gambit?"

I'd love a Bucs style defense, but there are no Devin Whites at pick 29. We are the victim of our own success.

True Devin White was not available for the Pack to draft.

But you know who was?

Lavonte David, twice.

But the wizard of defensive drafting Ted Thompson selected Nick Perry & Jerrel F'in Worthy in front of him.

In case no one here told you, you're not allowed to talk bad of Perry, so many here believed he would be a really awesome OLB. I know, I laughed at that thought day one. Worthy was even more worthless of a pick, but at least more accepted such quickly.

Oh trust me, I know the homers can't handle the truth about Ted's defensive drafting. I was out on Perry as soon as he declared himself a 4-3 DE who did NOT want to play 3-4 OLBer. But Ted knew better. He always did when it came to defensive drafting.

So much defensive talent available for the Pack in that 2012 draft, Lavonte David, Bobby Wagner, Janoris Jenkins, Harrison Smith, and we get Perry & Worthy. SMH.

And speaking of inside linebackers the Pack could have drafted, anyone remember Ted taking a safety out of ASU in round 1 and converting Randall into a (failed) CB in 2015?

This was the draft right after the pathetic ILB duo of Hawk and Jones was sent packing after their disastrous 2014 performances. Remember Packer fans clamoring for an ILBer named Eric Kendricks ... the All-Pro for the Vikes?

The Perry, Worthy, Randall round 1 & 2 misses (not to mention Datone Jones, HaHa, Rollins, King, Josh Jones) are how you continually get poor defensive play and why you get to ZERO SBs over 10 years with a QB who wins 3 MVPs.

Ken, every GM have those situations where they pick busts and another player was available to take. Its very common and you could pick apart any teams drafts and come up with many such examples. Geez, I wonder how many teams could say that about not picking Tom Brady with 5 or 6 previous picks....lol.

The draft is a crap shoot and yes some teams do better then others and that is why the Packers, Pitts, NE, Indy, NO and some others have great records over time. You can say, they all have had great QB's to sustain such success and that would be true, but they drafted them or in NO's situation traded draft picks!

Murf, slice it, dice it, rationalize it, explain it, excuse it or whatever floats a loyal Packer fans boat, but, but, but ...

2012 Round 1 Nick Perry, Round 2 Jerrel Worthy
2013 Round 1 Datone Jones
2014 Round 1 HaHa Clinton-Dix
2015 Round 1 Damarious Randall, Round 2 Quentin Rollins
2017 Round 2 (top pick) Kevin King, Round 2 Josh Jones

is some major crapping out in the crap shoot that you call the NFL draft.

Hard to believe anyone could have a worse 6-year run of drafting defense in rounds 1 & 2 (especially given the viable alternatives that were out there as discussed above) than what occurred in GB between 2012-17.

And yeah Ted's draft pick Aaron Rodgers sure did cover up a lot of his crappy drafting on the defensive side of the ball during this period of time.

BS on roids Ken. Murf point still holds. Draft is the biggest gamble any sports team takes. Packers do it better than most, their win-loss proves that. And if you are going to be a troll, work on your footwork. You are still a step slow...

A line backer wouldn’t have made a difference in that game, however a DL or 2 might have. I was advocating for that Christian Wilkins pick that was right there for us at the time. I also would have paid breiland whatever he wanted over keeping King. This isn’t just hindsight, I was beating the drum.

Yep agree that the Super Bowl was a downer (and what was up with that half time show? Strange season it was) Brady winning another Super Bowl, whatever.....

Joe Barry hire: after Jim Leonhard turned down the offer there wasn't a whole lot of DC's to be excited about. But MLF has earned the right to pick his own guy. 26 & 6 regular season record, 2 NFC North Titles and 2 Championship game appearances in 2 years.
Yeah, he's earned that right.

Aaron Rodgers personal life, not interested. Just play good football and do your squats man.

Packers Offensive line; they had problems in both games against the Buc's as did the Chiefs, you gotta give them their props man, they earned it and made Mahomes look mortal.

It is going to be a very interesting and challenging off-season for MLF-Russ Ball-Gutey and Murphy. Lets hope they get creatively aggressive and get this team over the hump and back in the Super Bowl in the next year or two.

That is all...

I would narrow the Bucs defense down even further to their front six. Their secondary is grabby and not that special, but the D-line and the two backers behind them are exceptional. The exact opposite of the Packers who have a good secondary and are less than special upfront. It will be tough for the Packers to improve our front 6/7 given where the Packers are drafting, but IMO that is the weakest part of the defense and of the whole team. Hopefully we get a gift to fall to us.

He is rated as one of the worst ILB by PFF, so the jury is still out on Queen. Although, PFF also has White rated as below average, which I cannot understand after watching him in the playoffs. I’d guess play to play he might not be in position, but he continues to make game changing plays game after game.

Guam, I don’t think they are that far off in the front 6 or 7, especially if snacks comes back and has something left in the tank, which is questionable. That said, to get there I think we need to use 2 out of the top 3 picks on our front 6 defense. The other pick I’d like to see is OT. Not sexy, but we need to build the trenches.

I agree the Packers aren't too far off, but can they get what they need drafting so late in the rounds? Given the likely need at CB, I doubt we can afford two of the top three picks in the D-line and linebacker as well as one at OT. The Pack is going to be one pick short of their needs and that is assuming they hit on all of them.

I used to be of the same mind about their secondary, but the last few games has changed my mind. They are physical and intimidating (did you see those hits on Aaron Jones that caused two fumbles?) There's nothing wrong with being grabby if the refs aren't calling it tight.

"They are physical and intimidating"

Tampa's defense is a defense that plays a step past the whistle. There are teams that do it, get up and run back to the huddle without much jawing and celebration, and you say, "man, they're physical". Then there are teams like Tampa that get that extra lick in, maybe a bit of a jab in the pile, take a little shot, then get up and yap and yap...and you say, "that's chippy," or "dirty F*in bastards". I'd far rather have the former than the latter and it's all a perception of confidence and professionalism.

"There's nothing wrong with being grabby if the refs aren't calling it tight."

I can't agree more...you've got to play within the rules, and the refs are the ultimate arbiters of the rules on game day. The problem I have is that when refs swallow their whistles as much as they seemed to do this postseason, it fundamentally changes the nature of the game--it's not the same game teams needed to excel at in order to get to the playoffs. NCAA tourney basketball is the prime example of this...and now this year, the NFL playoffs were worse than I've seen in recent memory (or maybe it seems that way because the Packers were not the team being the beneficiary).

Nobody wants the refs to decide a game with a call...but they can just as easily turn the outcome based on no-calls.

Agreed on Tampa's D. They remind me of Gruden's winning Tampa defense- no real blue chip players, just a bunch of JAGs hustling hard and playing with an edge- to the whistle

Our defense improved in the stretch, but I still saw a lot of guys standing around while their teammates struggled with a tackle.

I have not seen an edge to our defense since Mike Daniels, and I certainly did not feel it this season.

BTW- the occasional display of arrogance when a wide receiver drops a ball, does not count

I have never understood why there are basically 3 sets of rules with refs. Regular season, Post season and the Super Bowl.

Just look at the difference in calls from the Super Bowl to the NFC championship game. If the Packers had these refs, there likely would have been a few calls going GB's way and who knows what happens in that game. And while I like that they let them play like they did in the NFC championship game, there were plenty of plays that happened that there should have been penalties. The Lazard interception. Clearly the DB grabs his shoulder and pulls himself into the ball. That was a game changing play that should have been DPI not a turnover. There were other plays like that. When its a penalty the call needs to be made. Just like on the King penalty play. If Gary isn't held he gets to Brady and the play downfield is nullified. Those are game changing plays that if called correctly. And in other ways if they are not called correctly impacts the game.

Lets face it. Refs have a major impact in this game. And something needs to be done about it. Like the Mike Evans play before half time in the Super Bowl. The ball was not catchable. The ball was easily 5-10 yards away from him. Or the play in the end zone when Brady is clearly throwing the ball away, the WR isn't even expecting the ball and then tries to go towards the ball after he sees where it is heading. How is there not a sky judge or someone overlooking those plays to say, no its not a penalty. Not catchable. Similar to Kevin King. The ball wasn't catchable. Regardless of what happens the ball was way over thrown, yet the offense is going to get a first down for it?

I think its time to add some sort of REF in the booth to view replays of the games. Or to look over key plays. Like turnovers and deep pass interference penalties. Those are game changing plays. its time to start getting those right.

Really interesting comments, Dobber.
If what you're saying is true, the Packers should be vocal about changing the rules in the NFL to discourage both cheap shots and grabby defensive backs -- which really do ruin the game by rewarding trickery and thuggery over talent and good hard play.
I want the Packers defense to be a lot tougher but not dirty.
Even though it seemed the Bucs were the better team in our playoff loss, I would revise my opinion if their defense benefitted from cheap shots and grabbing our receivers.
One could say that they just were smart enough not to get caught, but some of us still believe in fair play and sportsmanship and honor.
I don't analyze the games as closely as some fans, and look to them for help in understanding what happened in any given game.
So I would miss some of the dirty tricks that -- if part of a team's modus operandi, method of operation -- would to me would taint any championship.
I hope the Packers don't take the low path, but instead fight for an NFL of integrity.

You set an impossible bar--every official, no matter the sport (which definitely includes home plate umpires) has their own interpretation of what constitutes a foul (or whatever) within the general rules.

If the Bucs are smart and skilled enough to get away with minor holding without drawing the flag, then our players should be taught to do the same. There's nothing dirty about it.

Al, the Bucs benefitted mightily from the change in the officials approach to what is acceptable from a defender in the post season. I’m not sure whether that’s just their leadership being smart or simply benefitting from a tactic to cover weaknesses. I can’t see that being allowed in the regular season. If it is, a lot of secondaries will be better.

I agree they hit hard and are very physical, but the last few games the refs also swallowed their whistles on PI which wasn't happening during the regular season. The interception against the Packers would have been PI during the regular season. Josh Jackson would likely have flourished in the post season as I don't believe he is any grabbier than the Tampa DBs. Who knew the refs were going to change the rules?

Play what the refs will allow, but the refs changed their game from regular season to post season and it allowed the TB secondary to excel.

Rule changes came out of New York. League directive on PI and defensive holding. All word of mouth. It remains to be seen if the owners will punish team Goodell for this. This is the second time New York has changed the rules prior to the playoffs in four years. Game crews have been in open rebellion now for at least two years over the constant morphing PI and holding calls. Can't see this ending well.

I think the Bucs secondary is good but you are right - the D-line and linebackers make this defense special. It is a little of the chicken or egg when it comes to defenses. If you have great D-line play and can cover with your linebackers, your secondary can be aggressive because that ball has to come out.

The Packers have taken the opposite approach and invested in secondary and pass rush. After numerous wasted picks we had maybe our best secondary and most dangerous pass rushers. Unfortunately, our pass rushers are one trick ponies and we still have weakness in the secondary. A second Kenny Clark and stud linebacker would repair this defense.

The King play was a total cluster FuxKing. Redmond should have made the pick on the previous play however. Then it never happens.
Like you Al, I’ve been saying the Packers defense needs speed, physicality and a nasty attitude, or as you put it, intimidation for a long time.

As for the Bucs defense they slowed down the Saints and Packers and dominated the Chiefs. Kudos to Todd Bowles. Wish he was our DC.

Our OL had their worst games of the season against the Bucs. They allowed 5 sacks in each game and multiple QB hits. Not sure why we didn’t utilize TE chips and running straight at them in the NFCCG.

As for Barry his defense in LA is #2 in sacks over the last 4 seasons. His defenses even the poor ones in Detroit were among the league leaders in turnovers as well. Better tackling, more sacks and turnovers would go a long way towards improving our defense. We have no choice but to wait and see.

RIC makes sense. He has been his own corporation for quite a while now. Football, commercials and part NBA owner are 3 solid revenue streams. His 3rd MVP just means more exposure and more revenue for him. Maybe be the he is 43 the Packers will have finally built a defense that can actually play defense.

Nice job Al, stay well. Thanks, Since ‘61

I am not sure that I agree with the 'rounding-up' of this statement. The front office has followed a philosophy of undervaluing D-lineman and linebackers in favor of secondary. I don't like it because it makes us light in the pants and less talented in the front seven. I am not sure that you can be "hard" with players like Lowry or Lancaster or Barnes leading the charge.

You are right that nothing will change - unless - we get more talent in these positions.

I don’t see Barnes as soft. Pettine’s scheme calls for a certain type of ILB, but is really more DB focused. Pair that with a light DL and the appearance of softness is likely. I thought Barnes overcame that remarkably well for a smaller ILB and a rookie as well.

My 'polluted mindset' has morphed to a 'muddled mindset'. This Packer team, including Aaron Rodgers exceeded my expectations - so to get as far as they did (with #1 seed) was a super bonus. Losing as they did is hard to swallow mainly because it was self-inflicted. A little better play by the O-line and better game decisions would have been enough to get past the Bucs. Ultimately, I believe we got out-coached and I think Andy Reid suffered the same.

The harder part for me is the dimming horizon for this team. Getting enough talent to make this a championship defense (D-line, CB, linebacker) will take time - two years if you are optimistic. Of course, Aaron Rodgers is the engine and his shelf life is close to done. Can Lafleur get two more championship years out of this offense?

All of these questions are asked in the backdrop of a very poor cap situation for the Packers. We are like the 5th poorest cap. Without signing any of our FA, we will need to shed around $20 million just to sign next year's draft class. Not a lot of wiggle room. The big question is how much of these contracts do we want to push out to extend guys like Rodgers, Adams and the like.

As I said... lot of muddle.

Draft-wise, now is the time to load up on defense with a two or three-year (hopefully two) window in mind. I know we also need to look for a tackle and RB right now, but I hope we will mainly focus on the future, with or without A-Rod. I want to win now as much as anyone, but we've had a couple of chances to get over the hump, and we haven't. Besides, our offense still should be pretty good with our current personnel. And should A-Rod get injured for an extended period, we still don't know what we have in Boyle or Love; we may be able to beat lesser teams, but good teams?....at this point, I doubt it.

Gute has to get these higher defensive draft picks right; we've done a really good job patching things together with UDFAs, but you can only go so far with them (unless they're like Shaq Barrett).

"The harder part for me is the dimming horizon for this team. "

This where find out if Gute has any vision. He's not been picking to win now...he's been playing a longer game with roster development. If he's right, for many of these defections, it's next man up and the wheels keep turning. There will be holes, but opportunities to fix some with the draft and lesser FA acquisitions. If he's wrong, then the wheels come off and it starts to look ugly.

Right out Wolf-Thomspon playbook. So far he won more than loss on his drafts. This is the big one. Gutekunst has to 'win' this upcoming draft with the number of contracts of core personnel coming due. With how this team operates in three-year cycles, we could be looking at massive rebuild worse case. This upcoming season could be a bridge year. I hope not, but nothing surprises me about Gutekunst anymore.

Razer, I don’t see a “dimming horizon”. When Favre was our guy, and Rodgers was on the bench, people trafficked in gloom and doom too.

There are a lot of very good players under contract that will be back. And the defense held Tampa to 24 points , minus the seven that were gifted by the Jones turnover OR the halftime bomb.. For all the bitching about the defense, it played well enough to give us a shot in every game.

I fully expect us to be good again next year, and that when it’s Love’s turn he’ll have a good team around him..

A solid draft, a wisely chosen veteran free agent or two, and a surprisingly aggressive trade would be the kind of blockbuster offseason I'm hoping Gutekunst has in him.
2018 was good. 2019 was great. Held steady in 2020. Hoping for a little more Wolf than Thompson in these next few months, though even Thompson had his smooth signings of Woodson and Peppers.

Not one word about winning a super bowl. Well, maybe that only happens when a team catches lightening out of a bottle which is the only way it is going to happen with the half brake/half all gas approach so far.

Win the division and make the playoffs. After that, a lot of it is injuries and luck. Tampa Bay got lucky this year with injuries and the bounce of the ball. Next year could be our turn.

I agree Razer. We will have a lot of cap trouble. Meanwhile, the Bucs are $29 million under the cap. With what their GM has shown in putting their team together, he has plenty of cash to work with in making TB even better. How long can Brady last?

You and I both Al. I think a lot of Packers fans were in the same place...Who gives a F**K! I sorta watched it, mostly listened to the first half. That first INT or TD by the Bucs near the start of the 2nd half was where I shut it off.

The Bucs defense was pretty damn good, down the stretch especially. BUT with that O-Line and what HAD to be swirling around in Andy Rieds mind, I think just about EVERY playoff team could have beat the Chiefs Sunday Night... Every team except the Bears that is.

A nickname for King?? Man o man, just want the man GONE from Green Bay. It's bad enough everytime I hear TJ Watts name I want to vomit instead of celabrate a Wisconsin boy doing great things. THANK GOD it wasn't the Bears, Vikings, or Lions drafting in that spot instead of the Steelers...Oh wait, that would have meant the Bears wouldn't have further destroyed their franschise with the Mack trade, right after doing years of damage with the Trubisky trade!!

FINALLY, a light at the end of the tunnel...The Bears STILL SUCK!

Small reflection .....
Assuming what I have already said in other posts that if the referees do correctly Tampa does not even pass the round against New Orleans, I have made a small comparison (Q excluded) player by player between GB and TB.
In my humble opinion (and very debatable ...) I have elaborated the following:
Gb is superior in 3 players (Devante Adams, Jaire A. and Bakt.)
We are tied in 2 players (Clark and Jenkins), but otherwise there is not a single time that I would take one of our players over theirs (I refer to talent).
So how come I still get the feeling that more GB has lost than Tampa has won ?? Maybe because we have Aaron Rodgers. I recognize that he is getting older, that he makes mistakes (he is human too) and that decision-making capacity on the whole perimeter is decreasing. But I firmly believe that without him this team (like many in recent years) would have a negative record.
For this I believe that Gb must restructure his contract, free up space in the roof and go fast on the free agency (in the hope of hitting the draft well)
Greetings from Italy

I'm glad the fans here have their sights set on a Super Bowl victory, but I would caution against too much negativity.
After the Packers had slipped into a couple years of dismal doldrums, our new head coach has revitalized the team to consecutive appearances in the NFL Final Four -- with an abundance of victories, including one in the playoffs each year.
It's understandable that we're not quite there yet as far as winning the Super Bowl because we haven't yet attained the level of the top teams -- but we can be hopeful that we're getting there.
We can praise the Packers for their accomplishments of late, and yet honestly assess their shortcomings so as to prod them to new heights.
Even as we're pursuing excellence, life is too short to not appreciate the amazing progress along the way.
***
Lest I be thought of as too positive, I was calling for a change in defensive coordinators at mid-season.
Then perhaps we would have seen if Jerry Gray was the man for the job in giving our defense an added edge.
In any case, now is the time to build that tougher defense of tenacity to put us over the top.
By the way, even in our win in the 2010 Super Bowl, the Steelers were bulldozing our defense in the second half -- and we were fortunate to hold on.
At least in those days our defense had some dash and daring, with Charles Woodson and Clay Matthews leading a corps of playmakers getting the ball back to our offense.
We could use some of that verve again, along with some of the ferocity of the Bucs defense that was the real difference in them beating us in the NFC Championship Game. They were fast and furious enough to frustrate us into mistakes. No shame at all in losing to them.
Their recipe seems to be brawny bruisers up front to eat up the blockers, and then quick crunchers to make devastating tackles. Let's focus on that in this draft, the kind of defense spoken of above by Jersey Al.
Thanks to him for a season of standout columns here at CHTV.

I like the way you talk.

We definitely need more dash and daring. I wonder how much a defensive unit takes on the character of their coordinator? hopefully Barry has a little more toughness and spleen about him. The scheme is of secondary importance to the attitude. Get those guys running around with confidence and ill will.

Super Bowl Blahs:

Watching the game, I couldn't help but think of the what ifs. What if we had the refs that were calling that game, and on the Lazard Interception they call DPI instead. Or what if they don't throw the DPI flag on King at the end of the game and Rodgers gets the ball back 1 last time. What if Adams catches the 1 TD. What if Redmond catches the ball before halftime. What if Bakhtiari doesn't get hurt.

The One:
How about the "Are you F***ing Kidding me play".

Joe Barry Hiring:
The one thing I know about his past DC jobs is that he did not have a lot of talented players to work with. He will have that in GB. I learned that the system he is going to employ is the Vic Fangio system. I like that. I learned from Bill Huber on the Mike Heller show the other day that the one good thing is that the defenses before and after Barry was the DC, were no better then when he was there. I believe Washington's defense improved under Barry and regressed after him. As we learned with LaFleur that we have to trust the process. Not a lot of people were happy with LaFleur. And he has finished 26-6 with 2 NFC championship games in his first 2 years.

Offensive Line:

Packers OL had been one of the strengths of the team all year. Wagner simply couldn't hold up against Barrett. Turner struggled against JPP. I do wonder what would have happened if Bakhtiari doesn't get hurt and Turner is able to play RT. I think they would have handled the pass rush much better.
When we get talking about the draft we need to make sure we talk about the OL. Watching what happened with Tampa and what they did to the Chiefs puts more emphasis that we need to make sure our OL is strong. With Linsley most likely to not return. Bakhtiari might be slow to return, OL becomes a bigger need. Turners versatility will help. Jenkins can move to OC if needed. Runyan looked good when he played. Stepanski might be a guy to watch. We definitely need to invest into our OT.

Bucs Defense in three words:
The speed really stands out. In all honesty the biggest difference was the ILB's. The speed at which they play is not comparable to the Packers. I really like Barnes and Martin looked good, but the speed difference is noticeable.

RC....David runs around a 4.6 so the comment I like best above, is "the speed at which they play". Fast 40 time doesn't necessarily translate to play speed...ala Burns.

I would argue those ILB's also have the advantage of playing with a very talented front 5. Suh, Vea, Gholston, JPP and Barrett. Collectively, I would say the best front 7 in NFL.

Good point. a player, especially at ILB, can have a fast 40 time but be too slow to diagnose and trigger. For all his imperfections, Barnes really showed that explosiveness on a few plays last year. Martin has even more natural ability, and I'm hoping with Barry's good track record coaching LBs, he might be able to use that athleticism within the scheme more this upcoming season.

I thought the Packers offensive line played poorly against the Bucs defense, but after seeing how the Bucs destroyed the Chief's offensive line, I'd have to revise that and say they probably did as well as could be expected without David Bakhtiari."

The thing that bothered me the most about the TD play before half, was TB pulled their TE and sent in their fastest receiver, after calling the timeout. If that didn't telegraph their intentions, then not only is Pettine an idiot, he is also blind.

Yes, GB blew the NFCCG, but TB's defense caught breaks with injuries to the OL for both GB and KC.

The reason one or many is sick of Tom Brady is simple jealousy. Deny it all you want, but when you want Rodgers winning like Brady does, you'd be ecstatic that people are sick of Rodgers.

The talk about the OL while maintaining a top five or number one ranking throughout the season was constantly boasted about, especially its incredible ability to maintain such with their interchangeable depth, until they got stomped when that ranked play needed to show up.

So it's now being said that we should wait and see about Joe Barry. Why? Is it possible that MLF may go the route of MM and surround himself with friends regardless of their poor success scaring some. When the failures are what stands out on a resume, nobody should be expected to wait and see, while those who should be all over it, endorse a softball approach about covering the backstory and the principle person(s), Barry and LaFleur.

The part I'm sick about Brady is hearing how he is the Goat after he plays poorly and his team wins. Against the Packers he throws 3 interceptions, (should have been 4) and he is called the goat seconds after the game. If the Refs don't throw the flag on King, and the Packers get the ball back and marches down the field for a game winning drive is Brady still the goat?

Just like a few years ago when they were playing Seattle in the Super Bowl. And at the 1 yard line instead of running it with Lynch they throw it and its intercepted. Seconds after that game he was labeled the Goat. If the Seahawks run the ball and score and win the game, is Brady considered the goat then?

Its the narrative that every time the team wins regardless of what he does, he is called the goat. That just gets old.

It isn't just about Brady's play, it's about his leadership, and how he and the team play to win.

It isn't whether the defense made the play or whether Brady made the play, the point is they do make the plays that turn a possible loss into a win or make a win an impossibility to lose.

The Packers, whether by the hand of Rodgers, the defense, coaching calls, always seem to collapse and that separates winners and losers and why one is THE Goat and one simply isn't and will never be based on success, which is Super Bowls.

Nothing defines the greatest more than championships. Not how he threw the ball, his escape ability, his pocket presence, number of TDs, games played in a row, toughness etc. They all take a backseat when the one with the Rings holds up his hands. It's about winning, not how or what got you there, but that you did when the others with any or all those tangibles didn't.

Apparently, lots of people didn’t care about the game. It had the worst viewership since 1969, and it was down millions from last year, which was down millions from the year before. I’ve watched every Super Bowl, but I had this one on in the background while I did other stuff.

For the second year , Jersey Al has pointed to a lack of team speed on defense for the Packers, but I don’t believe the plays that ended our season would have been changed by more defensive speed. The bomb to end the half, the fumble by Jones and subsequent TD, the missed opportunity to Lazard, the inability of Rodgers to Adams at the goal line.....none of these were about lack of defensive speed.

It was a great season, we had a really good team but we shot ourselves in the foot. That’s my season recap.

yes, and Packers have been drafting for speed for a few years now, examples are burks, savage, alexander, Hollman and Gary. many other fringe players had very good 40 times for their size in addition to excellent RAS scores. There is something else missing, but it isn't team defensive speed!

It was the defensive strategy and personnel use. Pettine is gone. He made the calls that hamstrung the D. I firmly believe that scheme and that roster would have been better without him had we cut ties mid season. Never have I seen a coach so determined to fight what seems obvious in terms of personnel and also repeatedly call defensively on a D that performs better playing aggressively. A coach that gets less out of players when his hand isn’t being forced is a lead weight.

Ultimately, despite play calling issues and fumbles on O, Pettine’s calling in the first half was completely contrary to the long known strategy for beating Brady. In the second half we had three interceptions against him when he was leading. Once the game forced Pettine to be aggressive (and maybe LaFleur at half time).

Pettine looks like a coach who has lost his nerve. He killed us. I hope LaFleur has learned from that. Don’t tolerate repeated unacceptable leadership.

Of Course King messed up. But he is No F**k-up. How many CBs does one franchise have to keep drafting? We've seen Tramon Williams even mess up during MMs rein. But to keep dumping on King, is just foolishness. This defense couldn't stop Brady. And thats the simple truth. It hasn't stopped anyone for 10 years. Capers and Pettine didn't have the answers. So if two guys who pushed the 3-4-4, can't figure it out. Shouldn't the scheme be changed? I praise the Barry pick. A coach that believes in LBs again. Hot Damn! I 'm excited. Physical play is coming back to GB. No need to call a Lawyer. Yet some on this site have persecuted King so much. He should call one. And if it's not Kings Fault, it's Rodgers. The conversation about Defense has been the same for the last 10 drafts. Something needs to change. And while the NFL will get to fest on are cast-offs. Gute' position on Love, shows he isn't listening to the fans. Ignoring the DL until they made the playoffs? Gute is the guy to blame! For he is responsible for this roster. All the money and blood won't help. The packers got buried.

The team that just won the Super Bowl runs a the 3-4. At this point, the only real distinction between the two is a different language. There are a lot of different styles within the 3-4. The Rams played just as many guys in coverage as we did, but were more creative up front, helping Aaron Donald get more looks. The 3-4 language seems to also work fine for the Steelers, Ravens, Dolphins, Patriots, Giants, and Cardinals, who ranked higher than our defense last year.

You may be right about King, but the biggest recurring problem with him has been his rotten luck with injuries. Perhaps that will improve on another team? His athletic testing scores were elite when drafted.

I laugh at all those saying they didn't watch or mostly ignored it while watching it. Personally, when I lose, I want to say I lost to the Champion. Even at the very least, it sounds better than all the whining from so many here.

RIC. Give the man credit, he rivals Brady in expanding and keeping his brand relevant... King was the end of a total Team Failure at the Half. At any point Lafleur should have called for or called a Time Out himself. Tampa's offensive tempo was beating Green Bay's defensive sets. It was well known after the Colts game that Lafleur made sure that he would make the call on the sideline. And yes, Someone should have made that call, maybe Amos didn't feel he could make that call. Pettine was too easy as a scapegoat covering Lafleur's failures as HC. The Berry hiring. Ugh. Just a bad DC period. In a contract year for Lafleur no less. Gute just put Lafleur on the clock. Great as always Al...

I have no answers. But I wish that I did. Maybe the new coaches would on last years team. This year’s team is going to be worse because of the talent drain due to the smaller salary cap. When we draft at the bottom of the order for decades and have an expensive QB then it’s hard to do more with less. I think that we outperformed expectations. I hated the ending but loved the journey.

Maybe "Should've held him". Certainly would have been better than when he did get called for holding.
