Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Good Luck, Good Love

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

I picked the Chargers to win this game, assuming Herbert would tear apart this Packers defense, and in reality he did. If his receivers didn't drop sure touchdowns, and Eckler doesn't fumble near the goal line, they would have scored at least another 14 points on their way to a comfortable road win. But as fate would have it, Herbert was let down by his teammates, allowing the poor Packers defense to escape too many additional slings and arrows thrown in their direction. While the defense was lucky, Jordan Love and the offense were good, despite the lack of a traditional running game. Love and his receivers were by far the most on the same page that we've seen this season, which is the type of progress you need to see.

DIllon - I have to say, despite only averaging 2.1 yds per carry (run blocking, anyone?), Dillon ran hard and looked like the AJ of 2 years ago. I don't know if it's just me, but he looks slimmer and is moving faster than the slog we saw last year. He made the most of what little there was for him on Sunday, and has become very effective as a receiver out in space.Contract year bump?

Holding off - When was the last time you saw an NFL game with no holding penalties on the offensive line? (actually, I think the Chargers were called for one early but the Packers declined). Anyway, the game didn't fall apart, football was played and the referees minimally injected themselves into the game (11 total penalties). I'm all for that.

The Fumble - On the Eckler fumble, from one replay angle you could see that a Charger initially recovers the fumble, but at some point under the pile, a Packer (either Campbell or Gary) stole it away and Gary comes out of the pile holding the ball. Huge play.

Comebacks - The absolute best thing I saw on the field yesterday was these young receivers starting to come back to the ball to help Love out and avoid having to make contested catches. It's no coincidence there were fewer drops and Love's completion percentage ended up at 67.5%.

Cornerbacks - The starting corners for the Packers on Sunday were Carrington Valentine a rookie 7th round pick and Corey Ballentine, a former sixth round pick on his 6th team. One would expect disaster at the hands of Justin Herbert and Keenen Allen, and while it was far from perfect, these dudes competed hard and acquitted themselves well, overall. They both have an aggressive mindset and are generally in position to make a play on the ball or a quick tackle after the catch.

Handoffs - After the Packers scored a touchdown to take the lead with 2 and a half minutes left in te game, I immediately tweeted this

The answer was a resounding "NO" as Matt LaFleur called for three straight inside handoffs with the Chargers showing six men on the LOS and the linebackers creeping up. It was as if LaFleur had channeled Mike McCarthy, putting the fate of the game in the hands of a bad defense. He got lucky, thanks to the dropped TD pass by a Chargers receiver, but my God, play to WIN - you have little to lose this year. Of course, he did a mea culpa in the press conference as he always does, but as Jacob Westendorf on twitter noted, at some point it becomes just another "it's like anything" (more McCarthy)." Personally, as someone not in the "profession," I was "baffled" by LaFleur's decision and thought he "exposed" himself...

Al I like your insight and I will be upfront I did not see the game as I live outside the viewing area. You say that one of the Chargers problems were dropped passes which I also got from watching highlights but then you say the starting CBs were Valentine and Ballentine and that they did well. From what I understand there should have been more passing yards and points which would put the game as a bad defensive game.

Not sure if they played better than their draft status and being rookies or was it more of what you would expect.

I put money on the over and fell short by 2 points. But I won the over in the Lions game.

It was an entertaining game at least. LaFleur is slow roasting his goose in Green Bay. I'll give him until the end of 2024. My latest thought regarding Barry is that LaFleur is keeping him around to have someone to blame for the team's ineptitude.

Yeah, it was Egbert. Coach LaF was explaining it...rather reminding us laymen, that football is a game of inches and what to do at the point of contact.

LaFleur's plat calling at the end left a lot to be desired. BUT, I didn't honestly expect anything else. I didn't expect much else from his press conference either. It's my responsibility, I have to be better, all the little things MLF will say and take blame for after every game is now routine...And tiresome.

How can he even think something wouldn't be his fault when he's the head coach?

It is not how you'll get it, but you needed only one (ONLY ONE) first down to ice the game. Who cares how.

Taking in consideration how Chargers populated line of scrimmage logic will tell him more WR and only one try with pass would brought 1st down. On 3rd try I wished FPQB was there to make change of the play call and throw the ball. First time ever I had that wish!

I get what you're saying Croat but we all know FPQB would have thrown it deep and incomplete after changing the 3rd down play call. And then yelled at the receiver for running a bad route.

Al, people want to say "we wouldn't have won or looked so good if it wasn't for their drops".

How many game won or scores would we have had if we didn't have our drops? Drops count and it works both ways. Ask the Chiefs.

Drops count in the outcome but not necessarily in a realistic assessment of the defense. I took that as Al’s gist. As far as that game goes, I think he’s right that their score flattered us.

I thank the Chargers for giving us some hope and cheers but they are a mess. Maybe they were our Thanksgiving? It was nice to see Jordan Love command the offense despite his O-line and RBs. I particularly like how Love has his eyes downright even while the line is letting guys through like a Black Friday sale. As much as I like Jersey Al, I can't get behind a AJ Dillon contract. Nice guy who runs hard but is generally ineffective.

Winning puts a bloom on everything but I am still haunted the phrase "he was wide open" that prefaced too many of the Charger catches/drop last Sunday. Again, great to have young guys who compete but our LBs, CBs and safeties don't really know the assignment well enough to make this all work. Coaching and talent.

I wish we could put a healthy, well oiled team up against a good Detroit squad tomorrow. I will settle for a spirited play and some luck. GPG

I dunno Razer, is it Dillon or is it the offensive line? Last Sunday I didn't see many holes that a mouse could run through much less AJ Dillon. I'm not saying Dillon is a great back, but I think it is hard to know what we have when there are no holes to run through. I wouldn't mind seeing Dillon back on a modest contract provided Gute gets some major reinforcements for the O-line.

Regarding "he was wide open", the Packers had some of that too and failed capitalize. Love missed Musgrave by inches down the right sideline (would have been six points) and Musgrave was wide open. The Chiefs lost a game when MVS dropped a wide open touchdown. I think that is just football. Sometimes the breaks go your way!

Regarding Detroit, you hit the nail on the head - the Packers just aren't healthy enough on either side of the ball to compete with a very good Detroit team. (And saying "a very good Detroit team" just seems very wrong.........)

...is it Dillon or is it the offensive line?...

Our O-line is, at best, below average and a handicap to the offense. Dillon is a second round RB. He has poor vision and is more likely to run up the backs of his O-line as find the seam. Despite his speed, running laterally is usually a backfield tackle. And, for a 250 lbs back, he goes down with the first hit more often than not. He should be a bruising power back that runs over people not a guy who can't keep his feet under him. I don't think that there are too many Packer fans who feel like Dillon can carry the mail when Jones goes down. Time to draft two new RBs

I agree with the vision and lateral running parts, but we disagree on the power part. I have seen him carry two and three tacklers for extra yardage. Dillon needs a bit of a hole to get forward momentum and then he is a power back. If there is no hole, the forward momentum part never happens and he gets stopped. I believe that is more of an O-line problem.

I don't think he is a "bell cow" back, but can be an effective complimentary back with a decent O-line. Hence my interest in a modest contract provided the O-line is improved.

Dillon has 2.1 yards per attempt (career 4.1). Jones has 3.7 (career 5.0). That look superficially perhaps like it’s Dillon, but Dillon is a between the tackles runner and Jones is a guy whose core ground strength is an ability to find a crack despite blocking.

Both are less than one would hope for. The recent league average is 4.2. It’s also worth noting that Jones’ long this year is only 11yards. Yes, it’s the OL primarily.

Not sure what the stats tell. When we are down inside the 5 yard line or need 2-3 yards for a first down does this offense look to Dillon to plow it home? Our firefly Jones is infinitely better at picking up the tough yardage or punching the ball into the end zone. Sorry, I just don't see what Dillon brings to the offense.

IMO, 5 TDS in 2021, 7 in 22, in a limited roll, paint a different pic. He is what he is, a power north south back who needs initial space and is a solid receiver. I really like that they have been bringing him around as a blocker.

There's a difference.

A ball actually dropped is not the same as ball overthrown.

Both are used to inflate the success of the Packers play.

The Defense is a better pass defense, and every ball near a WR is a successful pass.

The ball in the hands is different from the ball not being in the hands, regardless if the QB throws a bad ball or the WR runs a bad route.

The ball remaining in the hands signifies the game more likely changes, the other signifies nothing because the possible wasn't actually in play.

I agree, Guam. We have a below average LT, a below average Center, and a below average RG.

It was the same story in 2022-2023 drafts, now Gutedkunst is up against the wall after this year's collapse. The draft needs the LT drafted rd one. The center spot will stay the same since it is His guy. Rhyan should be lining up as the starter as we chat. The second OT should be bagged in rd two and a running back. Will we see defense drafted instead?

Yes, O line needs to be heavily addressed in the upcoming draft or free agency. However,I was surprised at how poorly the O line has performed. After playing well towards the second half of 22, I thought Bak would at least perform well in the first half of 23. The gelling of the O line coincided with our winning streak in second half. What happened is a mystery to me. However, there has been improvement of late in pass blocking as we vwere solid against some excellent pass rushers.

Did you see Dusty's Passing Chronicles?

It was showing some of the play action passes. What I asked him was why we couldn't run the ball against that D that was playing so light up front? The LBs were dropping back and covering the middle of the field and we still couldn't run? 5 or 6 men at the most on every play, begging us to run. Impresses me more that our passing game worked at all.

I would give Dillion a contract if it was within reason. Maybe 5M to 7M per year? Then we have a RB that knows the offense can be an all down back but we can draft a dynamic back next year. It looks like Jonsey may be on his way out with the injuries, unfortunately.

My son and I were screaming, at the TV, for the Packers to get the first down, to run out the clock for the win. When they ran three straight times, presumably to use up the Chargers's time outs, we felt that putting this game on Barry's shoulders was snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. It ended up working out, but it left both of us scratching our heads.

You almost need to go back to Ahman Green to see a Packers team that could close out games on the ground. I would love to see us RUN out a game but we need a road grader O-line and the backs to do it. Both are either in short supply or currently don't exist in Green Bay.

The plan was to crawl out of the cap hole that we were in. The plan was to have the best left tackle in football recover and play a full season. The plan was for Elgton Jenkins to be Elgton Jenkins again. It wasn't out of the question. I don't see this as a front office failure, I see it as some pretty bad luck, compounded by serious financial problems, and most of all, a mistake in promoting a great offensive line coach to Offensive Coordinator, and having a deputy take over the day to day role.

Jenkins is the only guy you mentioned who fits any plan. Bakthari is 33, expensive and recovering from 4 knee surgeries, wasn't hard to predict that he was a huge risk going forward. We knew what we had in Nijman, Newman, Runyon and even Myers and put the new starting QB behind that experiment. Yes the coaching is a problem but Gutekunst and LaFleur shouldn't need a crystal ball to see this problem

That’s odd, because Nijman has consistently been rated very highly as a run blocker thus far in his career. The only guy I know trots that out is Wahle. He’s a guy that I listen to, but he’s a total outlier in that one.

Here’s one source that supports the above. There are others, but this is free. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/34536376/2022-nfl-pass-rushing-run-s...

I suppose it could be that the OL coaching have screwed Nijman’s head up or had him regress like Runyon. I wouldn’t rule that out entirely, though I don’t see it in the run game.

DIllon -
Honestly when i saw his stats after the game it didn't feel like he only averaged 2.1 yards per carry. I am guessing that a lot of his carriers were pretty important getting first downs and stuff. And he was pretty good in the passing game. Dillon definitely looked like he was back in form.

Holding off -
The Chargers should have been called multiple times. I'm sure GB could have too, but there were a few times where our DL were getting tackled.

The Fumble -
That was the play of the game. If they score there who knows what happens.

Comebacks -
I thought outside of 1 play by Reed, they did much better attacking the ball. This team is growing!

Cornerbacks -
Its truly impressive that they were able to hold up as well as they did. They are on their 4th and 5th or 5th and 6th string CB's (depending on how you look at Nixon's role). And they held up well. Can't complain about them at all.

Handoffs -
I didn't blame LaFleur for going with 3 runs. I just woudl liked to have seen more of an option on the 3rd one. Where Love could run or pass and maybe a roll out.
It sounded like after the game that he called a play for a certain look and if they didn't get that look they were going to call timeout. Love just rolled with it.

When the season started I just wanted the team to show progress toward becoming competitive again. I was very disappointed during the string of losses, seeing the worst negative of all, a lack of effort. But the game against the Chargers showed what this team could be. When you look at the number of starters out, it's pretty remarkable. We tend to forget David Bakhtiari should be starting at left tackle. The secondary is truly a 'whozits?', Campbell and Walker have been in and out of the lineup and of course Aaron Jones. Somehow this team keeps moving forward, so that gives me hope. With all the minutes being logged by rookies and other inexperienced players the Packers should have a deep team in 2024. We might only see a couple more victories in the remaining games but with a good 2024 draft and the returning 'vets', 2024 might be what we all want.

How much more do they have to 'lose'? They're probably going to be around pick 8 or 9. So if they pick number 5 they 'win' and at pick 9 they 'lose'?

Professionals aren't paid to lose games so they whole idea of 'losing' to somehow get a better draft pick is absurd on the surface. What guarantees a team a 'win' with a 22-year-old who has never played a minute of NFL ball?

The first two draft picks last year are a good indicator. One team hit on a QB, another team is struggling. Drafting is a crapshoot. Sorry, I'd rather win games than play a loser's unfortunate game.

Packers could have won themselves right out of a Top 10 draft pick by beating the Chargers. It's a rebuild year. Fans should not expect a playoff berth this season. The Packers will only get better by drafting better players, and a 7-10 or 8-9 record will put them in the middle of the round instead of at the top of each round.

Love and the young WRs are a positive for this team and will only get better. Musgrave is out, after spending time in the hospital this week, so he could be headed to IR. Aaron Jones is out for a few weeks, and Emanuel Wilson was carted off the field Sunday. This why the Packers signed Patrick Taylor to the active roster on Monday. Dontayvion Wicks has a concussion and could miss the Lions game.

The chances of beating the Lions on Thanksgiving are 0%. Ford Field will be on fire with a nationally-televised game, and the Lions will want to make a statement with a dominant win. It won't be pretty.

Lions notable ROIs for trading Matt Stafford:
QB Jared Goff (trade)
RB Jahmyr Gibbs (draft pick)
TE Sam LaPorta (draft pick)

After the loss to the Lions, the Packers will be 4-7 heading into their game against the Chiefs, on Sunday Night Football, most likely leaving them with a 4-8 record.

Cheer for former Packers QB Tim Boyle to lead the Jets to a loss against the Dolphins on Sunday. The worse the Jets record the higher the Packers 2024 RD2 draft pick from the AR12 trade. The Packers will need all the draft capital they can get for next season. (And, yes, I should write for CHTV to provide the non-winsome commentary.)

- The OL was destroyed in run game.
- Chargers basically lost the game with unforced errors but packers took advantage with fewer fatal errors on offense
- Last series, play action on one play to TE that initially blocks might have been the way to go. The worst thing is that the run plays selected had little chance of success given the first point.
- Ultimately, chargers are a bad team, so are packers, but packers made fewer mistakes.
- Offense seems like it is performing better.
- Have to really "Love" the comeback in 4th quarter

Musgrave is out for Detroit game. I really do not see the packers winning. Detroit will exploit the packers defensive weakness. Detroit will keep running against weak defensive fronts, and that will open the pass game even more. Remember Chargers had 4 drops: 2 for TDs, and the other 2 were first down killers. That's probably not going to happen against detroit. Then the current conversation about the CBs entirely is different.

SO on point with all these points. While our Chargers win wasn't a fluke it definitely was a gift. The Lions game will focus the lens on our rebuild. We better knock it out of the park in the next couple of drafts.

Just play hard and keep your head up.

One way to go late in the game on third down is to have Love rollout to the right to make a quick throw to an open receiver, run for the first down, or to slide down in bounds to keep the clock running (a slight loss of yards on the play won't usually be detrimental for punting position).
By rolling out to the right, it's much less likely that Love is sacked from behind with the risk of a fumble -- especially if he's reminded to run the ball and stay in bounds if he doesn't find an open receiver within four seconds.
It seems like a safe way to be more daring.

On a rollout to the right, there should be various ways of getting at least two wide receivers in patterns for getting open.
Also, another receiver could line up on the opposite side of the formation and run a deep post.
Even if the ball is intercepted, it's like a punt that pins the opposing team deep in its own territory (with the Packers players alert to make the tackle in case of such an interception).
This might be better used late in a game which is tied. If the deep ball is completed, the Packers take the lead with a touchdown or an eventual field goal; if it's incomplete or intercepted, the other team gets the ball in poor field position, and we hope for overtime (or for the Packers to get the ball back one last time with significant clock left in regulation).

I dont know why they dont have him roll out more...is he inaccurate when on the move or what..I wish he would just take off and run just a bit more, when the opportunity is there.

Al, mostly correct on all questions, as usually.

I really want to point out one player who had all-pro game - Karl Brooks. He had sack, 2 tackles for loss and both times helped LVN to tackle the RB behind or at line of scrimmageby setting the edge and pushing RB to cut inside. Also he has the best PFF grades from the Chargers game. Look out! He will be quickly very important part of Packers D, sooner than later if they bring true DC insterad of Barry.

Not to forget to mention that Karl Brooks had several pressures and in almost every game this season he had one or two blocked or tipped passes.

This season rookie DL class will be special in next few years. And not to mention that we did not see Brandon Cox in game yet. I can not wait to see that DL and OLB work together in making the opponents days looking like nightmares...

Jayden Reed is another 2nd round gem Packers found in draft. I'm so happy for him.

Front line needs another big bodied run stuffer to go along with an improved Slaton, who has already surpassed all his totals from last season. We need D lineman that can do the dirty work of keeping our LBs clean to make tkls.

I liked and pushed for Benito Jones to be bagged by Gutedkunst, but no go. He ended up as an UDFA to Miami and now, guess what? He's one of the Pluggers for Detroit's front four @ 335 Lbs. The guy next to him is also pushing 330lbs. Nowhere to go with these guys unless you have the C/G combo to pull fast to the outside. Barry has to be removed and a 4-2/4-3 flex defense put in place. Ford should be activated for this Game, but he will sit and the defense will be gashed.

I posted this on 3 plays...., but I think it's worth repeating here.

"It's almost as if he gets so happy and full of himself when things go right he forgets we have to secure the win!"

What more could you ask for the team played hard they executed plays, and yes caught a bunch of breaks and to possibly once again throw that effort into the garbage can because of a coaching flaw is just getting to be too much to bear.

Have they no mercy? Will our suffering never end?

What is so hard to understand about play to win especially with the season we're having.
