Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Are You Ready???

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

First, a big shout out and thank you to our "Intern" Tyler Herrick for the new image. I had a vision in my head (right next to where I keep the polluted thoughts) of what I wanted it too look like and Tyler delivered.

So, ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL???  Of course you are. The Packers and Bears renew their rivalry on Sunday afternoon with many interested eyes on the quarterbacks. The Love - Fields  "who's better?" debate has been raging the last few weeks, with Packers fans pretty confidant they know the answer wears Green and Gold. Meanwhile, the Bears fans are hoping against hope that new weapon DJ Moore will help Fields show the one thing he hasn't yet - the ability to actually throw the ball effectively.

Barry in the Booth - He says he loves it up there. Maybe he likes not hearing the fans curse him? Maybe he likes being able to sit comfortably and snack while calling soft defenses?  Whatever it is, let's hope the change in scenery spurs something new in him, such as the desire to let his players really get after it and makes things difficult for opposing offenses with pressure at all levels of the field.

Let Jones Eat Early - I want to see Aaron Jones heavily involved in the offense early on. Let Jordan Love settle in at an easy pace. He's shown in three preseason games to perhaps be a bit overexcited on his first drive or two, and starting his first meaningful NFL game will surely have him a bit hyped.

Yay for YouTube - I'm absolutely thrilled that I no longer have to pay for Direct TV all year long just to be able to watch Packers Football. I'll be saving around $1500/yr. and still getting what I want. This will activate a whole new trove of out-of-state football fans who were not willing to or couldn't afford to do what I used to do. That sound you here are the legions of out-of-state Packers fans storming the YouTube gates.

Kudos to #12 - While there are certainly some  things about Aaron Rodgers' personality I don't care for, one thing I absolutely respect him for is how he has been helpful to and complimentary of Jordan Love. He obviously did not get that kind of treatment from #4 and surely has purposely set out to not be THAT GUY. He recently granted Bill Huber an interview where the main topic was Jordan Love, of whom Rodgers was very complimentary. If you haven't read the article, you really need to, and you can find it here.

Cutting Corners - I  don't know about you, but I'm still nervous about the Packers going into this game with only four true cornerbacks. And do you keep Valentine off special teams because he's your only backup?

Stopping the Run - Or at the very least, avoiding getting gashed in the run game, is my primary wish for the Packers' defense.According to Kenny Clark, "we got a different plan" this year. There's little doubt the plan is to be more aggressive and disruptive up front, but that can be a dangerous ploy if everyone isn't on the same page and there's too much freewheeling. And, don't forget, the Bears have Marcedes Lewis on their side, and we know what he can do. The Bears are a run-first team, so this will be a good early test for the Packers D.

If by the bye week, "Barry in the Booth" has not led to solid defense from the talent rich Packers, Barry's next stop needs to be Barry in Austin Straubel Airport seeking new opportunities.

The smart play would be to stop the run game and force Fields to pass. Heavy pressure with man pass D goes against Barry Ball, but a fan can hope.

Agree Al, challenge the OL to plow the road and be physical early. AJ Show! Bares will try to stop it...then Watson, Reed, Musgrave, Doubs (I hope...is he playing?) can unleash hell downfield.

Win the trenches and let Love settle in at his own pace.

I believe they'll elevate a corner every game day till they get Stokes off the pup list.

"The Love - Fields "who's better?" debate has been raging the last few weeks, with Packers fans pretty confidant they know the answer wears Green and Gold. Meanwhile, the Bears fans are hoping against hope that new weapon DJ Moore will help Fields show the one thing he hasn't yet - the ability to actually throw the ball effectively."
I think just the fact that the Bears fans are hoping that Moore will help Fields tells you what you need to know about FIelds. He maybe a good QB and maybe will turn into something really good. BUT, when did Rodgers need a WR to make him good? When did Favre need a WR to make him great? Yes WR's can help the QB. But if the QB is good, they don't need a WR to make them good.

Barry in the Booth -
I hope he can finally see that when they have the CB's playing 10 yards off on a 3rd and 3, how easy offenses pick up first downs. I hope he sees any changes that need to be made better and can make adjustments if needed.

Let Jones Eat Early -
Having a heavy dose of Jones and Dillon early on would be a wise choice. First teams will likely be trying to bring exotic blitzes against Love to try and throw him off. Using Jones and Dillon in various ways is one way to combat that. Especially in the passing game. Whether that is screens or check downs. It would be good to use them.

Kudos to #12 -
A lot of fans didn't like Rodgers from day 1. A lot of fans turned on Rodgers for whatever reason. No matter what peoples feelings are towards 12 hopefully they can appreciate how Rodgers was with Love.

Cutting Corners -
I'm not overly nervous, because I believe they will likely bring up a CB off the PS for the first few weeks. I would keep Valentine off special teams though. CB is to important.

Stopping the Run -
Stopping the run will be one of the keys for this defense. This defense is set to pass rush. They have the OLB's to rush. They have the interior DL that can create pressure. They have the CB's to cover. But do they have the guys up front to hold teams to 3-4 yards run average? They have guys who can stop the run with Slaton and Clark up front. But how does Wyatt, Wooden and Brooks hold up in the run game? That is the bigger question for me.

Great stuff, Al. Groovy graphics too. Way to be Tyler!

QBs - I’d monster Quay on Fields all day. The added pressure needs to get home for sacks, strips and forced INTs.

Fields has new toys, but so does Love. Green Bay has what I suspect will prove to be the better OL. With the amount of running they will do, this could get ugly for CHI. Can't score points if your stuck on your own sidelines, Justin Fields... Advantage Packers.

Barry - I don’t care where he sits, stands or roams, as long as he gets the job done.

Aaron Jones - He’s the best player on this Packers team. Time to let him shine. I want to see some solid run blocking up front and into the 2nd level to neutralize Tremaine Edmunds & TJ Edwards. THIS will be a key to the Packers winning on Sunday.

#12 - As a fan, I'm grateful for Aaron Rodgers’ candor and professionalism exhibited towards Jordan Love. Kudos to Bill Huber on getting that interview, which is a good one. My biggest takeaway for Jordan Love, one I think will be representative in his performance for all of 2023, is that “he gets ‘to’ play football.” I smell rocket fuel.

Rodgers' specific mention of "consistency," is also going to be huge for Jordan as he works his way throughout Game 1 and well into his career.

Love is a very talented, high character individual, leading this team as a true extension of HC Matt LaFleur on the field as QB1. We're gonna see some stuff. Love finally gets "to" show us all why the Packers drafted him R1 in 2020. So does Matt LaFleur.

CBs - I think we will be fine with the players we have rostered, along with Corey Ballentine and Kiondre Thomas available as roster call-ups from our PS. I really liked the play of both Ballentine and Thomas this TC/preseason. Stokes’ eventual return should be a boon to this secondary as well. Reports on Stokes' recovery have all been favorable.

RUN STOP - DO IT!!! The challenge is definitely there to be met with Justin Fields, D’Onta Foreman, Roschon Johnson and Khalil Herbert looking to have their way at home. CHI has been running the football more than any team in the NFL since 2004. Joe Barry and his defense must meet this challenge, all day.

I think the team readiness for whatever CHI has to throw at us is better than we've seen in years for Week 1. It's Bear week. Let's do this, Packers!

Sigh... I'm STILL a Direct TV subscriber which I hopefully will change soon. I too got the You-Tube Sunday Ticket package Al, but I don't share your enthusiasm. Personally I LIKED the Direct TV since I normally could talk them into giving it to me for free or at least free every other year. I'd just tell them I'm cancelling. With You-Tube I'm STUCK... I have to pay it if I want to watch the Packers and I WANT to watch the Packers...ESPECIALLY this season.

Glad to see YouTube get the contract away from DirecTV, but I suspect I'll remain in packer football purgatory.

Rochester MN is a 'local' market for both packers and vikings games. That means when the two teams play at the same time, the Vikings game is broadcast on my local channel. But it also means that I'm blacked out using any package like Sunday Ticket.

Hadn't been the biggest issue when the Packers played in a lot of primetime games, but I'm worried I'll be missing a lot more games in the future as both teams play more noon games.

Check out the NFL's streaming service @ nfl.com. I think it is called NFL+ or something similar. Not the basic package but the premium. I've been doing it for a few years and love it though there are some quirky pros and cons.

big con- cant watch the game live. However games are usually available shortly (10-30 min) after the live broadcast.

no black outs so you can watch everything

big pro- condensed games.... no commercials, no fluff pieces just one football play after another. you have not lived until you can watch a full Packers game in 30-40 minutes and never have to see a commercial.

big pro - the price....I think it is about $80 dollars for the whole season compared to YT' $90-$100 per month...

Just another option to look into...

I'm also an East Coaster, but I don't need YouTube yet because Packers games are broadcast a majority of time on regular TV. I think I only had to go out to the sports bar four times last season, and usually it's no more than five or six, so I consider myself blessed.

The Falcons in Week 2 will be an even better test for the run defense.

I wouldn't trust the Bears to take a conservative offensive approach; if I were them, I'd go for broke, maybe even trying something similar to what we did in last season's opener with Watson. What do they have to lose? I hope our defense is ready for anything and everything right out of the gate.

Love the idea of feeding Jones the ball early--sounds like a formula for success. And don't forget him in the second half, either.

Yeah, splitpea1, both CHI and ATL will present tough tests of this new Packers D in RUN STOP. We've added a ton of players to do just that, all of whom are equally adept at both RUN & PASS D. The additions of LVN, Wooden and Brooks will likely factor in here. Nixon from the slot can make some stops in the backfield too. Both Wyatt and Enagbare must meet this challenge as well.

Totally agree with you on giving Aaron Jones a heavy dose of carries, along with AJ Dillon. Maybe we even see some of Emanuel Wilson on Sunday... I'm really hoping we run on them at will, all day. That will open up our explosive passing game big time.

The Pack will have 8-9 Primetime scheduled games this season. They haven't forgotten about them. Jordan Love is a big story. They want to feature the Gen Z guys. He won't disappoint, and Rodgers will keep himself relevant.

I can’t wait for the season to start because, as Vic Ketchman used to say, “The baloney stops now.”
I’ve been reading baloney (except I don’t say “baloney “) for the last two months and I want to see reality played out on the field. Talk is cheap. Will they make the playoffs? Crap the bed? Reside in the great in-between? Whatever. Let’s do it! I’m ready.

If there’s no significant and consistent play from our D after 6 or 7 games, time for Gute and Lafleur to look for a new coordinator. Last season’s opener was a total embarrassment.

Yes. Changing horses in the middle of a stream is a good idea.

Was the embarassment that we held one of the league's top offenses under their season average, at home? Or was it that our QB played like he'd missed training camp and we only scored 7 points.?

Of course not...it is always better, if you are drowning at midstream, to keep floundering. 3rd year/time's a charm.

What was embarrassing was watching Justin Jefferson catch everything, wide open with a 5-10 yard head start, all game long. Even with the MN pass game so successful they still found time to run for over 100 yards.

And scored 23 points. Well below their season average. In fact, in 17 games, Minnesota was held under 23 only 4 times, once Green Bay. Only Dallas held Minnesota to fewer than 23 points on their home field.

Changing horses mid stream is an admission of failure, but at some point that is better than just repeating the same mistakes. Had they got rid of Drayton we might have had another trip to the Super Bowl. Sometimes just getting out from under a poor coach makes a team less bad. If Barry fails visibly, I do not expect much mercy, towards him or LaFleur. Barry has to show early that he can do it.

That’s not to say he can’t, but a poor showing on Sunday against a team he knows has to run will be hard to ignore and suggest that the uptick at the end of last year was more to do with hobbled offenses, something that mysteriously gets overlooked.

Hopefully we see a different, less passive, mindset and an adjusted scheme, something camp may have hinted at. Hopefully that works and shows we can stop the run without getting torched in the passing game, because if Fields could do that, others will be salivating.

I think that metaphor doesn’t mean what you think it means. It means you don’t make spur of the moment changes in a situation where things can go wrong in a hurry. Make a choice and follow it through.

Crossing rivers on horseback is not a hazard-free activity. Get to the other side and you can make your changes on dry land.

Vvvvvvvvvvv vvvvvvvvvvvvvvv

What would constitute a “poor showing “ by the defense? Since the league average is about 23 points, with teams averaging better at home, does that mean holding the Bears to 24 or less is a poor showing? Or is there some other criteria? And is there any adjustment for points that offense or special teams gifts the Bears?

The best rushing team in the NFL scored 29 points in 8 quarters last year. That’s 14.5 ppg . Is that a poor showing?

Feeding Jones Early......

The Packers, IMO, will beat the Bears soundly if we don't turn it over, and keeping the ball in the hands of our vets as much as possible is our best bet. Jones had his worst season hanging onto the rock last year, but over his career, he's pretty sure handed, as is Dillon. Love didn't throw a pick in the preseason.

If we follow form from last year, Jones/Dillon/Watson/Doubs will get the ball 80% of our plays. IMO, if we get guys blocked these guys can move the ball and score points. Anything we get from maybe Musgrave or Reed is gravy, and I think we're going to have a lot of tasty gravy this year.

I agree on all of this, LH. Exploiting the Bears' weaknesses in both RUN D and PASS RUSH should be fun for this 2023 Packers team, built to roll over that entirely.

We'll see if LaFleur & his staff, along with the players deliver.

The Packers are going to need to CTFB, and keep that rock secure. As always, those factors are paramount, as is solid blocking up front by our OL. Green Bay presents a very strong rushing attack, and our passing game seems to have grown to be even more dynamic.

Every returning WR has come into this season looking bigger, more fit to take on the rigors of a full 17 game schedule. Watson didn't get a ton of play through preseason, but my guess is that was intentional, in order to have less on tape for our opponents to game plan against. Hopefully Doubs can go, and I would expect we will see some Toure in the mix.

Musgrave and Reed added to this bunch is going to create headaches for CHI, as will the incessant pounding of GB's rushing attack. Both should play well off of each other nicely, while LaFleur, Love & Co. get in their groove. As I mention that, I can see Kraft sneaking into the flat wide open.

A lot of gravy...

Hopefully the Packers' added run stop produces a lot of 3 & outs, handing the ball back to GB's O to work their craft. I can't wait to see what LaFleur dials in on Sunday. This is the beginning of a huge test for our Packers in 2023. One game at a time.

The first game of the season is always a little different, and you're going to be playing NFL virgins like Musgrave and Reed. Maybe this isn't the best possible opportunity to showcase their talent, like we did with Watson last year in the opener.

Keep the ball in the hands of the people who've been to the rodeo before, focus on not beating yourself. I do not believe the Chicago Bears can win this game unless we help them.

I have Reed having a big game in his Hometown. The DBL will be directed to Watson and/or Doubs. Reed will get the nickel guy to abuse. Musgrave will not have the jitters; he was tutored by his uncle. A.Jones will have to hang onto the rock. If they sit on Watson 1:1, Love should have the green light. I would open with Four wides and let Musgrave work the hook zones. Let them know you mean business, no retreats. Move their LBs around; make them run, then punch them with the running game, Holmgren-style.

Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks all have hamstring injuries with Week 1’s showdown against the Chicago Bears just four days away. Watson and Doubs missed practice, while Wicks was limited.

Hope these are of the minor tweak variety and get cleared up fast or best case MLF just trying to fuck with the Bears.

we can only hope jones reverts to form regarding holding on to the football, and that MLF calls sensible games. i honestly have no idea what to expect, and i find that exhilarating.

Nice takes, Al!

But there is obviuos cloud still overshadowing Packers fan base (not necesserally stormy one). Yeah, FPQB already said in one former interview something like Packers have another one great at QB. I think that was mention on Rich Eisen show about 3 to 4 weeks earlier. And I do not remember who was guest (FPQB was not the guest!).

I really believe we should stop taking care what others teams or their players talk about Packers/Jordan A Love. We should concentrate on Packers and every week on the new Packers opponents. I know, it is still slow time and Bears still sucks, so you can not talk much about Packets opponent this, coming Sunday afternoon (for me - late evening / night).

On the other hand, you find a way to talk about that game in entertainment and respecful way, what I respect and support. But, after all, Bears still sucks.

Three month break from posting during a mundane offseason that, looking back, feels quite invigorating given no Favre / Rodgers drama of summers past!

If you haven't read today's article by Wes Hodkiewicz titled "The boy, the bike, and the reason Aaron Jones rides," be prepared to have a tissue or hanky handy. https://www.packers.com/news/longform/the-boy-the-bike-and-the-reason-aa...

Do we fail to show up again opening day? Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results, but the last two openers have been equivalent to food poisoning--us fans couldn't stomach any of it. For the time being, a young team has bought MLF / Barry duo time; we'll soon find out if they live up to the title "coach."

We are in a CAT year and most CATS will exceed expectations. Enemy sign of the CAT is the ROOSTER. QB Fields, QB Lawrence, WR Jefferson--all CATS, should be high odds favorites to be this year's MVP. With the youth movement, all ROOSTERS sans DeVondre Campbell have been purged from our roster. He is the vet most likely to encounter health / performance issues for '23. Good news: his replacement, McDuffie, is a CAT and may be more than adequate to replace him. We also have CATS Watson, Wilson, Tom, Johnson Jr expected to outperform.

To begin this year, at least until the bye, I'm taking a cue from Rolling Stones nostalgia: "No Expectations."

What's weird to me with Fields is how he's so much different in the NFL than he was as Ohio State. I live just outside of Columbus, so it's all Buckeyes, all the time in these parts. He threw the ball plenty and well while at OSU, but was always a threat to run. Granted, having Olave and Wilson as WRs helped him a lot. Still, it's odd seeing him unable to hit the broad side of a barn on Sundays after watching him make good/great throws every Saturday. I was concerned when Chicago drafted him.

He’s managed to throw to Reed, Heath, Toure all summer, not to mention Musgrave. Wicks is practicing and they may elevate Melton for speed in that scenario too. If the D does its job, that should still be enough. If the D doesn’t, it probably makes no difference.

If they beat the Bears with Doubs and Watson out I'll have to go out to the car and listen to The Score for a few minutes. There might be a Doug Buffone style rant. Or worse.

I hope you're right, but I don't think you are. This offense needs an outside, vertical threat. That is spelled WATSON, and to a lesser extent, Doubs.

It is week one. Chicago brought in six new starters. We shall see if they are on the same page, and indeed, how often GB is.

Again, I ask you. What would constitute "doing their job"?

If the average team scores 23 ppg, and teams at home score slightly more than they do on the road, will holding Chicago to 24 or less constitute doing their job? Or is there some other, secret, criteria that has to be met as well?

Just dont lose the first two games to these two crappy bottom of the NFL teams...that would not be a good mind set for the youngsters...win these two and off they go to a good season...

I think they should try to win the first 10 or so. LOL.

I sure hope they're out of the habit of playing teams at the other team's level. They need to start dominating games, if the NFL will let them. Don't you think it kind of fishy? Parady is hoped for, but when was the last blowout game?

Yes. I am ready. If the defense is not ready, maybe Barry can be switched to a booth further away. Maybe, Chicago. Go Pack Go!

New image. Not a fan of it. Survey Says?
Looks like a big head on a stick- Mad magazine?
I think your picture works just Fine. Less expensive.

Debating who’s better @QB- It’s all about the stats.

Barry in the Booth- I’m a fan of it.
Don’t think it has anything to do with Scenery.
It’s Processing the play on the Field- before Re-Runs.

Let Jones Eat. - Couldn’t agree more.
Kudos to #12 - Admiration. That must have been hard to write.
Cutting Corners- It Keeps Douglass A CB for sure. Nervous Agreed.
Stopping the Run - Different? Don’t be afraid of change! NO FEAR!

*Let's not forget this is a rivalry. Expect cheap shots*

NFL Season Ticket on YouTube is $400 for the year. You don't have to get YoutubeTV.

Better than half of Packer games are on TV for me for free here in Texas. I stream the rest over the internet. I don't pay for the Ticket, or Gamepass.

Are you near Dallas, LH? I spent almost 2 years down there gilding the Winspear Opera House balconies, 5 levels in 17 carat white gold... for Conrad Schmitt Studios. Had a crew of 6-8 people. What an experience. We were wrestling with the new Cowboys stadium for boom lifts, as construction on both facilities happened simultaneously. Saw the first Monday Night Football game in the Cowboys new digs after the job was completed. What a place. Seeing those monster screens in person for the first time... wow.

Anyhow, if you get a chance to see a performance at the Opera House, check it out. Wild architecture by Spencer DeGray from Foster & Partners out of London. The place was designed to look like a giant oil drum. Chandelier a series of light rods that cascade down from the ceiling, then retract up when house lights off to resemble a starry night sky. Pretty cool.

Found the best chili dog on the planet at Angry Dog in Deep Ellum. Just FYI, off topic fun.

Yeah, by Texas standards, San Antonio and Dallas are practically neighbors. It's about a 5 hour high speed car ride along some nice highways. It's fun, I've done it a bunch of times for different reasons. Traffic flows along pretty nice in the 80s and it's a real nice cruise.

I've been through there several times, but I only remember ever spending one overnight there . Big place. Certainly not nicer than San Antonio. Much better TexMex food here. Less traffic.

Thank you for the info Al.

My schedule is not always conducive to watching live games so for me NFL+ helps. $100 for the whole year is pretty good too. I absolutely love the condensed version of games. On NFL+ its the whole game, I know on NFL's TV network they will do condensed games but cut chunks of plays out. Watching an entire Packers game in roughly 40 minutes is beautiful thing. I just figured I would throw it out there as another option for people like myself who might not be able to always catch the live game.

Cheers and the Bears still, always and forever suck.
