Confessions of a Polluted Mindset 2020 - Packers Erase the Eagles

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Punt Coverage:

You can complain all you want about JK Scott; yes, he hasn't been great and he did screw up by punting it to the middle of the field on the TD return. Believe it or not, however, he's not the MAIN problem. What the Packers have is a gunner problem. There is no Jarret Bush, Jeff Janis or even Trevor Davis on this team. Looking back at the last five games the Packers have played, they have used at least EIGHT different gunners. (Will Redmond, Ka'dar Hollman, Josh Jackson, Malik Taylor, Henry Black, EQ, Stanford Samuels, KaiVarae Russell). That's just over the last FIVE games -  you can be sure they tried other players over the first seven games. There is ZERO continuity at that position and a real lack of talent compared to previous gunners that just wrecked other team's punt return plans. Rarely one to compliment MM, I'm going to admit here that he was smart to keep players on his roster that maybe were just average at their main position but were awesome gunners and special teamers in general..

Pocket Collapse:

I can't remember the last time I saw a Packers defense rush the quarterback with such lane and gap discipline. Wentz hurt the Packers last year as he was easily able to avoid any pressure the Packers provided. This time around, there was no where for Wentz to go. He was seemingly surrounded by four rushers at all times. Sure the Eagles have given up a lot of sacks, but that hasn't always mattered to the Packers in the past. This was really encouraging to see, although one breakdown was on that 4th and 18 TD. Gary made a mistake he had been getting away from the last few weeks, getting too deep and overrunning the QB. This allowed Hurts to step into the gap created and have time to find Ward for the TD.

OL Shuffle:

I'm guessing it's safe to say you were as surprised as I was about the decision to sit Runyan on the bench and not use the same lineup that finished the game against the Bears. My initial thought was they didn't want to throw a rookie in there and potentially have him go against a guy like Fletcher Cox. Thinking about it the next day, I felt there was probably a better reason but couldn't put my finger on it. Then, listening to Nagler's chat with Andy Herman on "Let's Talk Football," Andy laid it out pretty clearly. They didn't make the same move with Wagner during the Bears game because it requires multiple moves along the OL and you want to avoid doing that in-game if you possible can. It's a different story when you can practice all week in the shuffled alignment. Makes perfect sense.

Goal Line Offense:

I yearn for the day when the Packers line up at the one yard line and I have zero doubt they are scoring a touchdown. As it stands now, I'm usually thinking how are they going to mess this up?

The Defense:

Not great, but getting better, right? Right? Between LaFleur two weeks ago and some of the defensive players last week , Mike Pettine has been getting an earful about not playing it so super cautious all the time. That's not to say you want to be as stupid as Greg Williams was last weekend, but you have the pieces to play a style where you are dictating to the offense instead of the other way around. And please everyone stop bellyaching about giving up late scores when the game is out of reach. It happens all around the NFL every weekend. The Browns werer up 38-7 at halftime and only won by 6 points. When it mattered most, the Packers' defense got a huge stop with a few minutes left and the Eagles within seven points, and then the big Savage interception to ice it. Those are the type of plays the 2010 Packers defense made to get them to the Super Bowl. That wasn't a perfect defense either, but they came up big when it was needed most. Let's hope that's where this defense is trending.

Raven Greene:

In the famous words of Herman Munster, "darn, darn, darn." As regular readers of this column know, I'm a big fan of Greene and what he brings to this defense. But now he's injured again and it sounds like he will miss significant time. LaFleur expressed concern about the injuries to Greene, Ervin and Winn, but the Packers only placed Ervin and Winn on Injured Reserve yesterday. That could mean they want to be extra sure with Greene before making that move or perhaps he dodged a major bullet and may not need to be out that long. I sure hope it's the latter - having him back for the Titans game in three weeks would be huge.

Just One More Thing...

I would note that Runyan's pff grade fell quite a bit after the Chicago game. With young players and young linemen, once they put tape out there, DL will make adjustments. I am guessing that Chicago's DL had a chance to take a good look at Runyan's tendencies. I would have liked to have seen how Runyan responded to whatever Chicago's DL did, but he didn't play. Actually, I think Wagner is better than Turner at RT anyway, so the issue for me was Turner/Patrick vs. Runyan. Runyan's 156 snaps is a little early to state that Runyan would be fine as our starting LG next year. So far he's is promising.

Ditto for Greene after playing just 43 snaps year one and 70 year two, but he's played 324 snaps this year: it looks like the guy can play. The problem is simply finding a Hercules hybrid: a guy who can cover like a safety and handle the run like a linebacker. At 205 pounds or so, it may be that Greene's body simply can't play hybrid and stay healthy. That's probably why GB is interested in undersized ILBs (see Burks) and even some really undersized OLBs (see maybe Tipa Gileai, Ramsey).

I agree on Wagner and Runyon versus playing Turner at guard. I think Patrick needed time to settle at LG. He gave up a sack very early before playing well as it was.

Greene has vision that seems to be essential in that role. I don’t see anyone in that roster who brings that and physicality to that position. If he is out, I’d rather see Martin there and trust the remaining DBs.

I hope Al is right ( we did get better news on Winn) but I fear the delay is due to a second opinion.

In all honesty, my thinking was--especially early in the season when the safeties were struggling and the cap was likely to regress--that Adrian Amos might be a cap casualty with Greene potentially stepping into the SS role. It looks like both Amos and Savage are playing better at this point, and it's possible the cap may freeze instead of regressing.

Makes some sense as Amos is 214 lbs ,but Greene is built like an Adonis. However, we would weaken one position to strengthen another.

Good point about ST. We seem to draft guys with high RAS scores which should indicate + speed for there position but gunners typically are WR and CB and we don't have much speed at either spot after our starters.

If the point is churn (due to injuries here), then surely it’s consistency not quality? That said, while gunner may be part of it, the wide unpopulated avenues seem to be due to others?

I can buy the consistency, I’m not sure it’s necessarily talent and I’m confident it’s as much if not more about lane discipline.

Every team reserves spots for ST specialists, and in the past for the Packers it's been Jarrett Bush or Jeff Janis (as stated above) who were good outside players. Now it's developmental ILBs like Oren Burks and Ty Summers who don't contribute on the edge on STs.

Not physical LBs to begin with, poor tacklers. As AL stated, who are the gunners? You need at least two dedicated Sp teams players to prevent the leaks. Belichick won more games because he understands the three phases of football. Try Taylor outside and Scott. Poor drafting at the ILB position can get you in trouble. Deguara and Lovette out hurts the contain. Hollman has to guard the hash.

Hollman ran a 4.37 forty but a knock on him was poor tackling.
Vernon Scott is supposed to be fast, but no pro day.
Malik Taylor ran a 4.48 at a pro day at 216 lbs.
Seth Roberts ran a 4.44, 6'2" 195 lbs.
KeiVarai Russell ran a 4.49 at 192 lbs.
Stanford Samuels ran a 4.65 at 187 lbs.
Juwann Winfree ran a 4.53 at 210 lbs.

I assume all of those guys have been tried as gunners. No one with a combination of good speed and size except possibly Vernon Scott and arguably Malik Taylor.

Janis had size, speed and toughness. Trevor Davis ran a 4.42 at 187 lbs but he was a pretty good gunner. Can't find numbers for Jarrett Bush other than 6'0" and 200 lbs.

Thank you. We have some people who would rather see an "aggressive" defense that risks giving up big plays rather than a defense that facilitates running out the clock. What we have are people who care more about staying "aggressive" than winning the game.

Thank you Coldworld - this is exactly the point. The 32 yard touchdown pass behind our prevent defense that wasn't even close enough to contest the catch is the problem. At least keep it in front of you and make them take time off the clock.

For the past month Pettine has not played 'Prevent' defense nor has he played soft coverage. Current NFL pass rules makes it hard to play man coverage in this league. No hands till the ball is in the air for DB is standard across every team. Want to know why D. Adams is a monster, watch how DB cover him. Either mirror or trail, that's a no hands cover. Charles Woodson had his hands all over WR from the moment the ball was snapped as a CB. He and other CB were allowed to impede the route. Packer CB cannot do that in today's game. That forces them to give cushion, so they do not get beat deep. If the secondary was playing 15-20 yards off near the end of the game, then that's prevent. But the Packers under Pettine are pretty rare in playing a classic prevent defense, and for good reason. The current pass rules so tilts the game in favor of offense, it is suicide for defenses to play one. Watch both the Bears and Eagles game, while both King and Alexander are off coverage, the TE and slot WR are pickup by both slot CB and hybrid/SS and ILB in man depending on what Pettine has called. King and Alexander are both on an island in that scheme. That is not a prevent, but a defense trading space for time. Of course one could go zero coverage in the last two minutes...

Yes it's true and you can only play who they put in front of you so I'm not going to bitch about the defense this week. But, I'm also not going to feel better about the defense until they close against a playoff caliber team. I like what Pettine has done the past few weeks. Let's see if they sustain it against the Titans before anointing anybody.

Fair point, but just like offense and defense can close, Special teams can open a game back up.....the defense was on the way to closing the deal with a stop. The Eagles had no momentum whatsoever. That all changed in one play. You simply cannot allow a 90 plus yard punt return for a TD. It just cannot happen. I basically see that as 2 possessions. The possession you lose on offense and also the wasted effort and non possession of the defense by getting the ball back. The game was essentially all but over until that point. That play changed the entire complexity of the game. Special Teams are consistently the most overlooked part of the game. I hate to keep going back to the Patriots but Belichick put a huge emphasis on special teams and field position. This was part of the Patriots recipe.. Great special teams or terrible special teams by the opponent can result in nearly an entire possession every game.

In addition, if you look at the majority of the best statistical defenses in the league, most of them also are supported by good ST units whom are flipping field position and are putting their defense in advantageous situations.....

Al - I have the same hesitancy in endorsing a coin drop for this defense. Yes they played better, particularly up front. The Eagles O-line is leading the league in sacks and QB pressures so buyer beware. Still, something to build upon.

Say what you will about this defense, special teams or even running the ball - this team is Aaron Rodgers. When he plays well, we outrun our opponent. The fourth quarter sputters let the Eagles back into the game, a team that had no business staying with us. Not running the ball at the goal line defines this team. We will go as far as Rodger's arm and head take us. Thankfully, our O-line is playing well enough to let this formula work. The big question is whether Rodgers can carry this team to the top.

Dillard and Lane Johnson out for the year, Peters trying to produce in a 39 yr old body. The Titans O line is a challenge and Detroit is getting healthy. Keep increasing Keke's reps, spot Lancaster inside with Clark with a 4-2 look just try to present a physical front.

Like many, I am still not convinced we have a championship defense, however the improved play of Gary, Savage and Keke as well as the surprising contributions of Martin and Barnes have me hopeful that the defense is improving. Unfortunately the loss of Greene will hurt. I liked Winn, but Pettine didn't play him much so the loss is not great. Maybe Anthony Rush can pick up his snaps and help with the rush defense.

If the defense can get better, the Packers certainly have the offense to have a shot at the SB. Go Pack Go.

Good points Al, the key to the up front pressure is a 4 man front , Pettine needs to keep it that way, Stafford is no slouch can't let him get comfortable Sunday , have to keep the pressure up . as far as punting , early on in the season Burks seemed to be making some plays ,even Summers , I don't know if its just th gunner but they need to figure it out fast.

Punt Coverage:
JK may have outkicked his coverage, but you are exactly right. Coverage of these units have not been good. Its not just the gunners either. The first return they allowed, they had 4 guys taking up one lane.

Pocket Collapse:
With outside rushes from the Smiths and Gary, to go along with inside rushes from Clark and Keke, the front was really good. The interior rush getting push up the middle really was impressive.

OL Shuffle:
I was surprised they went the way they did on the OL. To me it made more sense just putting Runyan in at LG. They keep the entire right side of the OL intact. Instead they moved Patrick from RG to LG, Turner from RT to RG and put Wagner in at RT. That is a lot of shuffling. Obviously it worked, but still surprised me thats what they did.

Goal Line Offense:
I was really hoping Dillon would help in these situations. Line up a guy who is just going to bowl through people. Maybe over the final games he can contribute, but have to question how good he will be coming back.

The Defense:
One of the problems with our defense has been how soft it has been playing. On 3rd and 5 we have DB's playing 12 yards off the ball. When its 1st and 20 (after a penalty) they typically give up 10-12 yards on first down mostly becasue DB's are playing at least 10 yards off and they give up easy completions. These are the things that make things difficult to watch. This week the DB's played a lot more tight coverage. Which didn't allow the Eagles to have easy quick throws. What that did then was allowed the pass rush to get to and affect Wentz. The defense needs to stay aggressive! Stay in the WR's faces and make them earn their yards.

Raven Greene:
I'm also a big fan of Greene. He is our xfactor on defense imo. He is the best pure tackler on the defense imo. Our defense is a lot better with Greene on it then without.
In his absence I hope we see more of Martin and/or Barnes. They would provide better run stopping ability. Redmond is not the answer. In fact I would use others over Redmond. I would use Scott and/or Black over Redmond. I would also consider using Jackson more. I hope Pettine changes his defense more for the players he has. Greene is very good in his role. Redmond is not Greene. I hope they use others!

Just One More Thing...
Jones is very good! I hope they can find a way to keep him! He makes a difference in the offense.

On the absence of Greene: I agree on Redmond, the guy is willing but smaller and really a true deep safety (I like him deep where he is a good 3rd option). I’d hoped Scott would show in the Greene role, Black certainly hits, but what strikes me about Greene is that he has instincts that make all the difference. Tackling and physicality dont do it alone, and not do coverage skills without those attributes.

I share your hope that we see Pettine use a true ILB (at least until in full prevent mode). I hope we do not see Amos there as last year: it’s a waste and at best not good solution at hybrid either. Time to let Martin or Barnes grow over the next 4 games.

Amos is not the guy he should be. Just get a guy in a gap and threaten the dog or drop to hold the QB's attention.
KC. lets the Honey Badger do his thing and he contains the Edge fast via run/pass blitzes. Scott should be able to start contributing, Black should help Sp Teams.

Maybe Barnes and Dillon might be ready by the end of the season, but I'm doubtful. What is not understood is Covid-19 wipes out lung capacity and at the same time spikes a person blood pressure to very dangerous levels. A person's strength and endurance crashes after that. Knowing how the Packers are about injuries, the odds that one or the other will see the field this season is low. (Saying that, Barnes has a better chance as he is on the roster now. Dillon looks like he can't go through a full practice yet...)

On ST- what difference does it make who plays gunner, if they over-pursuit the ball carrier and get sealed out of the play? Every. Single. Time...

The biggest errors I see on ST are in lane discipline, both north and south and east and west... and that comes down to coaching not personnel

A year ago people wanted to cut Linsley and Turner for cap savings.

Wagner has been in the league for years and has thousands of snaps on film...which were well studied by our personnel people and coaches BEFORE we got him. They know Wagner is a keeper. Our line, and the depth of it, rocks. Don’t weaken this group. It protects Rodgers and opens holes in the run game. We’re the #1 offense in the league.

Goal line offense: the key to short yardage is push up front from the OL. Go back and watch short yardage plays and see how many times the defense wins at the LOS and gets penetration on the Packers...defensive penetration is a short-yardage killer.

part of the problem on the goal line is AR's unwillingness to go quickly, and maybe too in love with career td passing stats. When we line up in power to obviously run, AR runs the clock down trying to get them to jump for a free play. This tires OL more than d-line as they have to be in a fixed position once set. De-line can readjust all they need.

Lets consider who we played. Teams with lousy QBs. No; this Defense isn't getting better. Their taking advantage of poor OLs and a bad QB. This team is a big deck of cards. Shuffle them; and hope the Luck of Rodgers gives you a winning hand. Special Teams are terrible. In fact, their just plain bad. What Hang Time? Shepard was cut. And the guys we want, always get hurt. Coaches are suppose to have the answers. Yet, why are the players making the changes? Fire Pettine! He'll only fail us in a big game. Jones was worth the money when everybody wanted him to play more. BG keeps signing guys to late. Costing this club more. And signing the want to bees. The problem with the Packers has been they create holes before they fill them. Using Back-up plans, more then fixing it right the first time.

Lots to unpack here stockholder!

Some I agree with, some not.

re signing Jones (and other players): Bakh's first contract extension was early...... and very team friendly for the Packers. I guess that old saying rings true, it takes 2 to tango. So maybe the Jones deal isn't getting done because there's still too much uncertainty over the cap (of which the Packers presently have too little) and both parties are waiting (and on that point, clearly Jones knows his value and isn't going under it).

Side note on my last line You may well say that Jones should have already been signed before this year. Perhaps. But there's the situation of MM being fired 2 seasons ago and MLF being in year 1 last year which would have put the brakes on things.

I couldn't agree more with this weeks viewpoints and it's almost uncanny how they mirrored my own thoughts during this game

We must be related somehow, but I guess that's because perhaps we go back farther.

For example ,your comment about yearning for the day when we know we are going to score at a goaline.. That used to be the norm in any situation, and it has eaten at me for years, and even with Rodgers, you still never know.. The same goes for a crushing LB in the middle that is the face of the D. Still waiting.

Anyway thanks for another great article this week. Pay Aaron Jones. He's a keeper.

Recipe for success: keep the pressure on the QB, play more man coverage and don't take the foot off the pedal until up by 25 (3 - 8 pt td's).

Hi Al
I agree with what you wrote.
I think if we can clean up games like 4th and 18th and continue to improve the stop to run, with the right match, we can go far.
One observation: I think we have a good attack, but individually our WRs don't have good hands
Hello everybody

MVS might break our hearts or win the big game. At the near end a game in Jan when the camera follows the ball and we see MVS is open for a TD, Packer nation will freeze for a moment.

It seems the problem with Mike Pettine is that he does the same thing over and over and over again.
NFL offenses are going to figure out predictability and take advantage of it with devastating success, demoralizing and undermining our defense, wasting talent.
It's not so much about being aggressive versus playing it safe, as it is mixing things up to keep the offenses guessing.
Also, it's not about a formulaic planning of plays ahead of time, but calling the right plays for the defense at the right times.
I've advocated firing Pettine yesterday (and hope the change is good for him as well as us). I'm glad to be wrong, though, with Pettine succeeding in bringing along the defense in splendid fashion by the end of the regular season.
However, after our debacles in the playoffs last season against the Seahawks and 49ers, how is it that Pettine seems to be only making changes in just the last couple of games?
He seems even more clueless about making adjustments during games -- plus his players seem disoriented and disorganized on the field, leaving gaping openings for opposing offenses again and again and again.
I'm concerned that finishing the season with several games against mediocre offenses will give us a false sense of security about our defense that will come crashing down in the playoffs.
Are there other fans out there who can assure me with some specificity and certainty that things will be different this time around?
I 'm not seeing it, and I don't want to go through the agony all over again.

What you see is what you get, especially in a playoff format when you should be multiple and countering the opponent's strengths. Good article in the Athletic about the coordinators commanding too much power during crunch time. Le Fleur may be diplomatic about dealing with Pettine ,but one more fail may lead him to be more demonstrative with Murphy's DC.

Pettine seems to be driving us insane; or at least me insane; or at least me insane more so. Perhaps I'm too fragile in the mind.

you can feel better if they put up a respectable performance against the Titans, otherwise I agree with you.

Come playoff time the D will be a crapshoot and ST will have us biting our nails. Hoping for better results but it's anyone's guess.

Facts.

After 12 weeks, the defense is 15th in scoring, 11th in yards. Six of 12 opponents have scored 21 or less. Only the Saints, Bucs, Vikings and Colts......all on the road....hit 30 on us. At home....which is where we’re gonna be..we’re averaging 22 and nobody has gone over 28

Of the four 30+ games, two of them involved multiple turnovers. One involved the Packers using a bunch of guys who hadn’t had any preseason in a soft prevent. And the other was when we held the Saints to 30.....below their home average.

So, if our offense can manage 31 points and not commit multiple turnovers, I’m happy with our chances, home or away, against anybody.

The Saints will not be able sniff 30 at Lambeau in January with Brees' baby hands either. We really need home field.

In goal line offense there is no need to run down the clock, just line up at the LOS and snap the ball. It would also help to have a lead blocker for Jones or Williams in the short yardage and goal line situations.
These are man on man situations. Go with a jumbo package, maybe use Nijman as the lead blocker. Not being able to run it in from the one or two yard line would have driven Lombardi nuts!

As for the defense, stay aggressive. Rush 4 at least and play with reckless abandon. Take no prisoners. This soft play and poor tackling is very frustrating to watch.

Hope to see the Packers play for the division title this week and not come out flat. Thanks, Since ‘61
