Confessions of a Polluted Mindset 2020 - Packers Bedevil the Bears

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

Kevin King on 3rd and three:

You surely know the play I'm referring to: third and three and Kevin King is playing eight yards off the LOS and then actually retreats some more as the ball is snapped. I'm going to try to rationalize (not agree with) Pettine's thinking here. First of all, the obvious question; what's worse - giving up a short first down there or a big play? Looking at the Packers' defense, King is on Allen Robinson without anydedicated safety help. The Packers are in a single safety alignment so any help would be late coming if at all. As I've postulated for the last 2-3 years, Kevin King is a good corner with the play in front of him. and not very good at all covering deep balls. Early last season, King was getting smoked on deep balls (he had games where he was responsible for 123 yds and 163 yds for the game) and that's when we saw the Packers go to more of the soft coverage scheme that drives us all crazy. Reading back at what I just wrote - I guess I'm blaming Kevin King for Pettine's soft coverage? Ha! Of course it's not that simple, but fear of giving up explosives is certainly the driving factor. Getting back to the third and three play, asking King to cover Allen Robinson deep down the sideline one-on-one without dedicated safety help on top, and you're playing with fire.

MVS

I felt strongly that MVS would have a big role in this game. We've seen it before when he is not involved much for a couple of games, they seem to scheme him in. Of course, it very likely depends on the opposition, and the Bears were apparently ripe for the picking. I actually put in a prop bet for him to score a TD this game and he should of had two!

Sorry Jimmy:

It was great (not that I'm vindictive or anything) seeing Jimmy Graham be a complete non-factor in this game. Even better seeing him trying to pad his stats in garbage time and be completely denied the goal line by Jaire Alexander.

Snacks and 4th and ones:

Did you notice that the two fourth and one plays when Snacks was in the game the Bears passed the ball? They didn't attempt a QB sneak on those plays. Coincidence or not?

Toss plays:

I was near having a conniption fit when I saw the Packers try two toss plays on their first posession. The plays each went for -1 yards and I had ugly visions of the Tampa Bay game all over again. Why in the world you would think that's a good plan against teams with linebackers like the Bucs and Bears have is beyond me. Luckily, LaFleur seemingly came to his senses and crossed that play off on his play sheet.

Trubisky:

Mitch may be the only starting quarterback I've seen where you are happy to see him throw longer passes. The inaccuracy on throws longer than 15 yards or so makes for a plethora of pass breakup and interception opportunities. I give credit to Nagy for understanding this and tailoring the offense to avoid Trubisky's deficiencies, but damn Allen Robinson can't be happy. Too bad - he could be catching TD passes from Aaron Rodgers right now. You think he kicks himself every day for picking the Bears?

3rd Quarters:

This is officially a thing now - what is it with the Packers and bad 3rd quarters? Lately, it seems they are chasing a quick ending to games they are ahead in instead of staying committed to running the ball. Long methodical scoring drives with a lead are the best way to put break teams spirit and ice wins. I'm thinking of the drive where Aaron Jones gets nine yards on first down and the Packers pass unsuccessfully two plays in a row instead of taking an easy first down and keep marching.

The Defense:

Three straight games of holding their opponent to 16 points or less. In this game, they kept Chicago to only one TD in five red zone chances. They came up huge in the third quarter, preventing a momentum shift to Chicago's side that was on it's way to being a real problem. With the contest being a one score game at 21-13, the momentum shift started with the MVS drop of a sure TD, then a sack of Rodgers and the Bears force a punt. They proceed to drive down to the Packers 9 yard line with a first and goal. The Packers' defense kept the Bears out of the end zone for three straight plays and force the Bears to kick field goal (an interesting decision with the ball at the two yard line, but still). That kept the score to 21-16 and on their next possession the Packers went three and out after Aaron Jones picked up nine yards on first down. The Bears then ran off 15 plays which got them to the Green Bay 25, where the Packers defense (Chandon Sullivan in particular) came up big with a fourth down pass breakup. At that point the Chicago momentum surge had been quelled and the Packers ran off their own long TD drive with a nice mix of run and pass that iced the game. Those were two huge stops by the defense in a one score game - those are they type of things that win playoff games.

Great stuff, Al.

My thoughts:
1. "asking King to cover (any competent WR) deep down the sideline one-on-one is a problem."
YEP! And this, along with injuries, is why King will be gone soon. Good riddance. I'll take him as a CB2, but he's been a disappointment as a high draft pick. Time to go back to the draft and/or ask current depth on the team to step up.

2. " Why in the world you would think that's a good plan against teams with linebackers like the Bucs and Bears have is beyond me."
Also, yes. Fast front 7s are AR's Kryptonite. You know the only way to beat those fast and physical defenses is to out-physical them. You can't out run them. POUND IT DOWN THEIR THROATS! The ONLY time I've seen a GB team do this in ARs tenure is 2014 in THAT GAME. And it started off great. We won't talk about how it finished.

3. RE: Jimmy
I was screaming that it was a bad signing from the very beginning. The dude was washed in Seattle. He's nothing more than a post up (1 handed catching) target now, and our QB doesn't throw into tight windows. Terrible move by Gute. Glad he's gone and glad Bob is in.

4. RE Snacks: He IS the missing piece to this team. We have the best roster 1-53 in the league right now. I really do believe that. Pick your poison. How do you want to lose? Like Chicago did, with 1,000 paper cuts? Or like Carolina did, bombing away ineffectively?

5. RE: Trubs: Man, I hope they re-sign him. I love gloating over my crap eating Bear fan buddies. :)

6. 3rd Quarter: Yep. It's a thing. If it wasn't there, we'd be blowing everyone out by 21. As it is, there'll be a few nail-biters.

"Pick your poison. How do you want to lose? Like Chicago did, with 1,000 paper cuts? Or like Carolina did, bombing away ineffectively?"

This is what has made this team so hard to go against. How do you defend the offense? This is the most balanced our offense has been in I don't know how long. They have a legit running game and passing game. They don't completely rely on Rodgers arm to win games. They don't rely on WR's to get open all the time. They scheme guys open.

Defenses can't take away everything. Adams and Jones are the best weapons we have. Adams is the best WR this year in the league. He has been almost unstoppable. Tonyan deserves more love too. He should have been a pro bowler this year. They have plenty of other guys who are key players to the offense too. Lazard, MVS, EQ, Austin, Williams, Dillon, Daffney, Lewis are all key contributors that can make plays in the passing game.

Don't be surprised if Daffney gets more involved in the passing game. Hearing Rodgers yesterday talking about him, I think we will see him more involved. I also think Dillon will be getting more touches. He is built for the cold sloppy weather. I liked the look of Dillon and Jones together. Its a nice wrinkle.

That is the other great part about LaFleur's offense. He isn't afraid to try different things and use different players.

"This is what has made this team so hard to go against. How do you defend the offense? "

You jam up the inside gaps with your ILBs, take away the run game between the tackles, and force ARod to get the ball out to hot reads or take sacks. Teams like Tampa can do that because their DL can move the LOS and their ILBs are fast and versatile.

“ Adams is the best WR this year in the league “

An interesting post-script to that comment, and a poignant one for upcoming draft.

No-one here will deny that Adams is quick (and a finisher when he gets into the open field); but this is only secondary to his body control, first step quickness, route running and hands.

Go back and look at his combine - a 4.56s 40 yard dash - that’s linebacker-esque.

Not saying this (potential-wise) about any other WR on the Packers roster, but sometimes greatness takes time to develop.

Adams is at the top of his game now, and has contemporaries, but no peers (for what he can do).

To Al’s side note about Allan Robinson now regretting his decision - he was selected 8 picks after Davante Adams in the 2014 draft (and is a similar player to Adams - smart and dedicated). 2 more seasons like this one for Adams and he’s a short odds bet for Canton. I’d say Robinson by now has built himself a personal butt-kicking machine and it’s part of his morning routine!!!

I worry about the Packers potential matchup with Tampa in their next game. The Bucs have a fast, talented front seven and MLF does not seem to recognize that a bunch of his plays (toss plays being one of that ilk) will not work well against that kind of team. Trying to horizontally stretch the field against fast linebackers is playing right into their hands. I hope we see a lot more of Dillon against TB.

Snacks introduction to Green Bay was a positive one. I think Al hit the nail on the head when the Bears played away from Snacks on two fourth and ones. He is a premier run stuffer and can the Packers ever use him. If Keke is back in two weeks, that gives the Packers a solid rotation on the D-line and with the much improved play at both OLB and ILB this will allow the Packers to play both run and pass defense well. For the first time in a long time I am excited about the Packer defense!

Yep. I think we'll be favored to beat TB, but they are (IMO) the hardest NFC match up for us. Buffalo, Baltimore, KC, NO, SEA don't scare me. TB does.

“TB does”. Do you mean Tom Brady or Tampa Bay? I think it is mostly because of Mr. Clutch and his ability and comfort in playing in the cold weather which he did in New England for two decades.

If we can put pressure up the middle and take out Brady’s game, we will beat them. Brady hates that type of pressure. I watched the Bears game again and really liked what I saw in Snacks. He was disruptive. He very well might be our X-Factor in getting us to the SB.

I hope you are right. Personally I didn’t see the production as much as, perhaps, the deterrent effect that Al referenced. In a game where we consistently gave up 4th and short, if he was so good then the usage by Pettine was presumably the opposite.

To make an impact you have to play, if it’s snap count, try playing Prive or Lancaster. Yes they are not as good as Harrison has been, but they would still have been harder to run through than a DL line without them. If this theory has merit then what the heck was Pettine playing at allowing those drives to repeatedly be extended? Either Snacks is being over lauded or Petrine is actively preventing him and possibly others from making us as good as we should be.

I think you need to re-watch Snacks plays. He made at least three plays where his quick move got immediately past the defender and redirected the runner. I don't see that type of play from either Lancaster or Lowry on any consistent basis. They are both average at best.

I was very surprised by Snacks quickness and power and see why he was consistently rated as one of the top run defender time and time again over the past 7 years. Based on what I just saw, any team not double teaming him is asking for trouble.

If he is injury free right now, and it sure looks like he is, I think he could be a very BIG (no pun intended) addition to this team.

In the montage that was put together by Al in last weeks article he showed Snacks shucking off the Center for the Jets a couple of times. At the time I deferred commenting about it, well, because it was the Jets (and they double suck twice as much as the bears).

Snacks isn’t the high workload player that he was, but he can clearly still deliver the same output in spurts.

Both?

And I agree with pressure up the middle. The match ups TB has concern me. Fast front 7. Hard to run on. Good CBs. Great QB and good WRs with a potent running game.

Yes, they're inconsistent. But their ceiling is very high.

Do you really think MLf who is orchestrating with Arod arguably the best O in the league doesn’t understand that? There are reasons for different plays throughout a game that us arm chair QB’s don’t understand or fail to take the time to rationalize.

It’s fair to say that thus far he hasn’t been able to find a solution. The Bears lost their best ILB in the first quarter, but we’ve had games since by poor teams who stymied our O at least in part by being able to do this. Hopefully LaFleur has found a response, part of it could be using Dillon and Dafney to really pummel the middle this time. Some times old answers can be useful. Hopefully LaFleur will try such things if we do see Tampa.

Point taken Murf, but you also can't run lots of plays that you are pretty sure won't be successful just to set up others. You only have a limited number of snaps in a game and the majority need to be successful. Running a few outside plays I would understand, repetitively running outside plays that fail doesn't lead to success (see the Packers first game versus Tampa Bay).

Not so sure it was an anomaly since TB has the #1 rush defense in the league. They have pretty much stopped everybody's rushing attack. MLF will have to get creative (misdirection, some power running, etc. etc.) to establish the Packer's rushing attack. I think TB is just a tough matchup for the Packers.

Now if we could order up some nice snow and/or frigid temperatures, that would help slow down TB's offense!!!

That's one of our bread and butter plays, so you have to at least test them. Rewatching( love my DVR) one of those plays , if he cut it to the inside he would have gained substantial yardage away from over pursuing LBs.

It's one thing to use those plays regularly and get nothing...but if you're using them to goad the defense into overplaying it, then hitting them with misdirection, play action, or the like, then you're opening up both (hopefully).

Teams don't get to 10+ wins and 6th in total defense (and first against the run by a wide margin) by being lucky. The Packers will have to establish the run by out-executing, out-scheming, or being very clever. Still, remember that the Yucs are about 21st against the pass in aggregate yardage. They've got one pretty good CB and a good pass rush. They give up plays downfield...Packers need to anticipate TB doing what they did before--pressuring ARod through the A-gaps. Packers need to get ARod time to throw. If they can do that, they should put up points.

Show the toss and run the counter-traps. Get White and David into coverage mode to open the middle. Lots of stuff to work on those guys. Best offense is to neutralize Brady with speed rushers.

Kevin Kings best move of the bares game was his slide down front during the "D-Train" celebration. That moment was just pure entertainment and even though I do not go for the over the top celebration stuff, I was chuckling and enjoying the D-Train.

MVS is a bit of a conundrum. I just try to remember that he is still a raw, young player and that his upside is tremendous. I have faith that he will look at his tape over the off-season and focus his good work ethic on improving the areas where he has shown deficiencies and come back next year better for it. In the meantime, he is a real threat to score at any moment and this offense NEEDS that with Davante being as great as he is, he does not threaten defenses in the same way that MVS does and some of DA's success can certainly be attributed to the threat of MVS. I have heard it said that MVS will never be a number 1 WR, I disagree. If he uses his time wisely and hones his areas of weakness he can become a true number 1. He has tremendous physical attributes and the desire and work ethic to improve. I do believe that MVS may follow DA as the GBP number 1 WR.

Jimmy or no Jimmy, I am tired of seeing the Packer D give up garbage time stats that make them look much weaker than they are. I am really happy with the progress this defense has made in the second half of the season. It has come along with my own development as a fan here in 2020. The NFL has changed drastically from the league that I grew up watching and the style of defense that I had as an ideal in my mind no longer exists. Grading the current Packer defense against my expectations from the past was an exercise in futility, I have evolved...

The Snack-Master... It is about time! I certainly hope that Pettine and MLF use him appropriately, they are off to a great start, they placed him in situational positions to succeed and he did so by influencing the opponent to play into the Packer D strengths. A+ so far.

Situational awareness seems to be a bit of a learning point for MLF. He is a very raw HC and is learning as he very successfully goes along. I would like to see his play calling and situational awareness evolve to include the killer instinct needed to bury an opponent at the appropriate point in a game. He seems to go a bit conservative a bit too early and perhaps a little transfer of a sense of urgency to his team leaders at the right times could drive this team to the killer machine they have the talent to be. The 3rd quarter lull is an example of needed growth, as HC he needs to own this and make adjustments such as calling a trick play early in q3 to get the attention of his players, a fire and brimstone speech is probably NOT the answer. The toss plays vs a fast defense is an example, I get why to show it, but why even try to actually incorporate it into the game plan? Example - use of AJ Dillon in the bare game. Dillon could have extended a couple drives and evened out the TOP allowing the GBP to put the bares away sooner than they did - IMO of course...

Trubisky is on a Cutler-esque career trajectory. I hope he continues his stay in Chicago forever!

there, whew are my fingers tired...

Cutler was a much better passer the Twobitsky. Cutlet could throw deep effectively. Cutler’s problem was poor decision making. Twobitsky’s problem is that he is just not very good.

Is it a Cutler career trajectory or the results of throwing in QBs to a team that seems determined to never give them a decent offense?

Something not mentioned. But Rodgers could have been intercepted three times in the Bears game. Not off of deflections, but throws that were in the hands of a defender, but dropped/bobbled/missed. Also, is it just me, or does Rodgers accuracy suffer for a few plays after he is violently sacked? Lastly, is Rodgers possibly calling an audible, and rather than running, he decides to pass? Because Rodgers does love those chunk plays.

Ricky, no QB at any level of football can just shake off a sack, IMO. If you want your offense to work, you need to prevent that, unless you’ve got a guy like Jackson or Murray. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of a QB these guys are at 35 after a couple of hundred hard hits.

We were surfing through the games and every time a QB was sacked or hurried I’d ask...”Did that QB have time to do his job?” Usually, no. And then you watch Rodgers getting the time he needs and you see the results. Gute has put a great group on the field that has withstood injuries and protected Rodgers.

Keeping your $30 million man from getting beaten up over a 16 game season is hard, but we’ve done it.

I definitely noticed a little stretch there where he was throwing behind his WR's. 2 come to mind. One to Lazard in the gold zone where the ball should've been about two yards in front of where it was (Lazard adjusted and made a nice grab, took it up the sideline for a first down) and one to Davante where he had to reach back and make a sick one handed snag behind him... that one had all the makings of an int, Tae saved the day.

QB1 is human but man, I'm still glad he's our human!

If Kevin King is going to play 7-8 yards off the LOS then we need an OLB to cover the flat and prevent the short pass especially on short yardage situations. Otherwise QBs like Brady are going to throw quick passes to King’s side all day and pick up first downs.

MVS is in his 3rd season. Time to make catches on uncontested perfect passes. If the pass it at his shoe tops or off his outstretched arms or contested by coverage that’s one thing. But when you have AR placing the ball perfectly you need to catch it at the professional level. As Lombardi once said to Bob Long after he dropped a perfect pass from Bart Starr, “Mister, I pay you to do exactly one thing, catch the football. The next time you drop a ball just keep running out the tunnel and out of the stadium.” Basically, “do your job.”

I can understand play action on 2nd and 1, especially if AR reads one on one coverage. But on 3rd and 1, button up, line up and get the 1st down. Give it to Dillon and get the job done. Maybe AR changed the calls at the LOS. Either way that was a WTF moment.

When the Packers signed Snacks I posted that he can still contribute and I think he proved my point, although a small sample size so far. Even with just 12 snaps he had an impact in the Bears game.

Our defense needs to keep playing with a sense of urgency and solid tackling. Good to see MLFs comment about playing too far off the LOS. Hopefully we’ll see a change against our next opponent.

Great job again Al. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

Preach it '61. They are getting paid to play and execute in a professional manner. You have hands or you do not.
LaFleur cannot afford to have Pettine go head in the sand at any time during these playoffs. This team is his best chance to get the Lombardi. The whiff on Jackson is now coming home to roost in the secondary.

NFL network ran the game again last night I was able to record it and slow it down , it seemed the Bears were in 3 rd and 1 all game , still on running downs there were two D lineman, Lancaster allows himself to get turned around with his back to the play yet when Harrison was in you can see him squared away with his concentration on where the ball is , exactly how a seasoned veteran should do , as far as King you have to remember he's getting the bulk of the work as opposed to Alexander so he should always have safety help especially when its a long yardage situation and let Alexander fend for himself, I now believe if the Packers don't bring him back and draft a corner it could be a disaster with that corner picked on constantly to avoid Alexander .

I agree about King. I also think Mlf’s comment about playing more press validates your thoughts. Move up King and provide him backend help, especially when it is 3rd and short so they don’t give up easy first downs. King won’t be signed unless he is reasonable contract terms. You can’t have enough capable corners as injuries do happen.

MLF knows better. I thought he was pulling a little PR misdirect from his awful third quarter offense. The Bears run option game is fatal if those backs break into the second level. Packers had eight in the box, two playing a dual hybrid role pressing down on the edge. Both CB were to keep anything in front of them and the single high SS was playing as shallow as possible against soft middle or screens. I mean MLF saw the same video Pettine and Gray saw. The Bears QB (he who shall be not named) can not read the field in their passing game. And if I, a commenter can see THAT on the all-22. Then you know that Pettine and Gray also saw that and more.

One other thing. As you pointed out in another post Murf, we are in an era of matchup football. Both sides try to get the advantage by packages and or subpackages with at times specialize players in those systems. Packers do as much as any team in the NFL on both sides of ball. To think that we understand even half of what is going on....would be a push.

Unless a veteran like Peterson is signed. It will be an interesting off season for a SB winner looking to repeat. Remember best part of our D ( 7th in NFL) is against the pass, probably because we don't give up too many big plays.

Kevin King on 3rd and three:
Alexander can play 8 yards off the ball on a 3rd and 3 and make a stop. King can't. If King is afraid of getting burned deep, how about he plays 3 yards off and drops off? I get that he doesn't want to get burned deep. But he can't continue to give up easy plays on 3rd downs. Playing scared is not a good way to play.

MVS
I like MVS. We just need him to be more consistent. That dropped TD could have been a game changer. In the playoffs that dropped TD is the difference from winning and losing. You have to make the plays that can be made. We will need MVS to come up big in the playoffs.

Sorry Jimmy:
I absolutely loved that they didn't get the TD at the end. Nothing against Graham, but it was it was great to see that he was the one being denied.

Snacks and 4th and ones:
Snacks is a big addition to the defense. After being here for a few weeks we should see his playing time increase.

Toss plays:
The way i view those plays early in games is they do them to see what they can do and what they can't. The Bucs game was a learning experience. They kept trying something that didn't work. They learned from that. In this game they found out early if something was going to work or not. They realized quickly what would and wouldn't work and stopped running the plays that weren't going to work.

Trubisky:
Hopefully Trubisky did enough to get another contract with the Bears. When I see Trubisky play I think of Charles talking about Jay Cutler. Same old Mitch...

3rd Quarters:
I don't get why they struggle in 3rd quarters. The offense needs to just keep getting first downs. Like you said they got 9 yards on one play and then didn't get a first down. Sometimes you have to just get a first down to keep drives going. It seems like there

The Defense:
Lets not forget that one of those games was again the Titans who at the time were the top scoring offense in the league. The Bears came into the game averaging 35 over the last 4 games.
The defense has simply been playing much better the last 4-5 games. With the way the defense has been playing, they give us a real chance in the playoffs. They been playing as well if not better then any defense we have had in a while. Clark is healthy and playing well. Barnes has solidified the ILB spot. And Kirksey has been better. Our safety play has really improved. We now have Snacks in the middle to help Clark. Getting Keke back will also provide a big boost. But our defense has been playing really well down the stretch.

I'll give the Packers defense credit for resiliency against the Bears (and at other times this season) in limiting the scoring damage after giving up long drives.
It's just that I don't think the Bucs or Seahawks or Saints or Chiefs are going to be nearly as easy to stop at the 2-yard-line to be limited to a field goal, or are going to be nearly as easy to stop on 4th-and-one.
The mediocre Bears offense started the game with a drive of 7-and-a-half minutes; then, as noted above, that same offense had a drive of some 15 plays in the second half.
That seems more than a little unsettling as we prepare to face more explosive offenses with the likes of quarterbacks such as Brady, Wilson, Brees and Mahomes.
Also, is there any reason why the Packers defense can't give Kevin King help in coverage to prevent him from getting beat on deep balls -- so that he can indeed play tighter coverage, especially on third downs?
Just want to restate that I'm excited about the recent progress of our defense, and am rooting for them to surge throughout the playoffs. I hope Mike Pettine and all of our defenders are among those celebrating with the Super Bowl trophy.
Do I have to pretend, though, that everything is wonderful with our defense?
Even if others think I am overly concerned to a greater or lesser degree, is it okay for regular fans to state sincere opinions?
Is CheeseheadTV a place for robust but respectful debate, or is expressing honest concerns seen as a terrible negativity , if not treacherousness, to be discouraged in the strongest terms?

"The mediocre Bears offense" Overall, I think your right on about it being Mediocre O. One thing to keep in mind thou is that they averaged 33 PPG over the past 5 games. Trubinsky came into the game with very high confidence and it showed throughout the game.

The Packers, albeit not pretty at times, held them to 16 points and that was with giving them the ball deep in the Packers field. I give the Bears some credit with a very good game plan against us, but in the end our Defense held them to 4.8 YPP and also got two big TO's.

Of course, it's in the back of everyone's head because we have been burned. However, we beat the Hawks and Saints, had a big lead on Bucs, and Chiefs D is not as good as ours especially now when we're peaking .

What is your issue? Has anyone discouraged you from stating your opinions? Has anyone associated with CHTV censored a single post by you? No, they have not.

Your opinions are not immune from criticism. Questioning your sincerity and honesty is fair game. Just because you are allowed to comment does not mean that people are barred from disagreeing with you.

When you claim that you write as though coaches and players are reading your comments, when you have the audacity to claim that coaches and players should heed your comments, you open yourself up to justifiable criticism. When you spout wacko beliefs that an "elitist establishment" is "trampling on your rights" people will rightfully question your lucidity.

- Toss plays: Yikes, I had the same feeling even as the ball left Rodgers's hands
- Jimmy Graham: Yeah, not sorry at all
- Allen Robinson: Ha ha ha...

Snacks non-coincidence: If we end up playing Tampa Bay next time, he should come in handy with any attempted (or thoughts of) Brady sneaks, as well.

You nailed this one Al. However, I am still afeard of Tampa. And with Antonio Brown ascending they look even better than they did before. Our pass defense would be sorely tested if we play them and the afore mentioned King would have a tough game. Our best defense in that possible game would be a great pass rush and push up the middle. I think that would be the best game plan on defense. On offense, run the ball and quick outs because Bak won’t be there.

#1. More; Harrison, More Clarke, More Barnes, and More Gary. This defense is the best it's been in years. #2 - I'm not down on King at all. King has had past injuries like Hayward. King will make plays. And he will get those Ints. IMO. - KING HELPS Savage! He needs to move around. Savage just plays better with him. #3. Keeping Barnes stationary is now a necessity. #4. Getting double teams off Clarke is mandatory. Snacks Harrison is the only guy that can do that now. These guys have given this defense credibility. It now can execute anything Pettine dreams up. 3rd and one> Why wasn't Dillion the answer? Ram it down the throat.

"I give credit to Nagy for understanding this and tailoring the offense to avoid Trubisky's deficiencies"

Well that took a long time. I could not for the life of me figure out why Nagy was asking Trubisky to run a drop back style offense. Trubisky is fine on play action, single reads, roll outs, and keepers. Doing much else is folly. They need to run the ball and do play action against the Saints.

Thanks Al. Good as always. During the game I was laughing when the Bears had the ball. It was evident that Nagy was doing everything in his power not to run a classic drop back play. Pettine just flat out dared him to throw at Savage all game long. If the Bears had a decent pass blocking O line... but they don't and that's that. I don't get what's happening to the offense in the third quarter. It's like the ghost of Dan Devine has possessed MLF in playcalling. Fourth quarter comes along, and the Packers are back in business. All season long. Strange... More and more I think Gute must be one of the best, if not the best GM in all of pro sports. What he has done in a very short span, is nothing short of remarkable.

“Did you notice that the two fourth and one plays when Snacks was in the game the Bears passed the ball? They didn't attempt a QB sneak on those plays. Coincidence or not?”
Great take. You’re welcome Al!
