Packers Select Evan Williams, Safety in 2024 NFL Draft - Round 4

Evan Williams, Oregon, Safety

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

5’11”

200 lbs.

4.6 40

40.5" Vertical

CAREER NOTES:

Spent the first four seasons of his collegiate career at Fresno State, earning All-Mountain West second-team honors in 2022 after finishing second on the team in tackles. He also chipped in six tackles for loss and four PBUs. During his lone season with the Ducks, he led the team in tackles (82) and was first among Pac-12 defensive backs in sacks (4.5).

NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

NFL.COM

Packers Wire

33rd Team

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

General manager Brian Gutekunst continues to give options to new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley in the backend of the secondary. In the CHTV Draft Guide, Nick Pennisi ranked Williams as the 13th-best safety in the class and wrote, in part: "A fluid mover, he excels in mirroring receivers and tracking vertically downfield. He has excellent ball skills and poses a threat after interceptions. However, his limitations in speed and range hinder him as a center fielder, struggling to cover cross routes effectively. His physical limitations may prevent him from becoming a consistent NFL starter."

Notwithstanding that, he could find the field during his rookie year on special teams.

COMMENTARY:

Williams appears to be best situated to play closer to the line of scrimmage as a box safety -- he's a hard-hitting tackling machine but did not rack up a ton of career interceptions in college. While he recorded three interceptions in 2021, he did not record a single interception over the last two seasons. Nevertheless, Hafley could move him around and utilize his talents throughout the secondary. According to Wendell Ferreira, Williams played 1,172 snaps at box safety, 960 at free safety, and 604 in the slot throughout his career.

The Consensus Big Board had Williams as the 197th-ranked player.

What a waste of a couple picks. Why did u bring Hicks in if u aren't going to draft him. Quit wasting money on bring 30 players in. I would of rather had the punter from IA or a CB. Does gute realize we have injury prone CB room and we face some of the best wr groups in the nfl in our division. I don't want to hear anyone bitch on here this fall when we are giving up 300 yds all the time to our division

Then, you should include Gutedkunst and 90% of the guys working in NFL personnel offices. Joel Buchsbaum regularly held his own, or Out-performed NFL GMs on draft day. The Combine used to be open to the Public. You could talk with scouts in the Cocktail Lounge.

JJB, you wanted Hicks because you probably read about him in some draft guide. Me too, and I've seen him on big boards as high as #39. But here we are after 121 picks and NO TEAM has drafted him.

So you can be mad at the Packers but every team has passed on Hicks multiple times. So maybe you don't know as much as you think you do?

Move up 15 spots for a 6th rounder? Sounds like a good deal to me. Especially when you still have two more 6th's.
They must really like this guy.
A new look in the secondary in '24. With lots more picks to play with.

Film and study reliable draft sites. Watched both guys while in college. Williams started more games with four years at Fresno State and the transfer portal hired gun for a stacked Oregon squad. They share similar profiles and comparable stats.
Mustapha is a more dynamic playmaker in the mold of Bob Sanders. Quicker. Gute may be going with the Dix profile with a taller guy who will have a longer stride running, but squat in the deep middle?

Mustapha 5'-10, 209 lbs with 4.48 40 time. 41.5 vertical [35 games] 175 tackles 15 TFL 4.0 sacks
3 Ints 20 PD 4 FF

Williams 6'-1, 205 lbs with 4.60 40 time 40.0 vertical [ 53 games] 308 tackle 16TFL 5.5 sacks
4.Ints 14 PDs

My nephew and his former business partner developed a football analytics service early on in the development of the WWW and consulted with the Seahawks, 49rs, Raiders and Rams. They both did graduate assistant coaching gigs for Don James when he coached U of Washington. They were "acquired" by another firm and dissolved their relationship.. He still has Contacts.

Pauline rated Mustapha as the #5 safety and Williams #16. The Wake Forest crew played lights out. No this gift went to Lynch and the 49rs. Bullard was rated the #10 Cornerback. I believe Williams will be better than Dix, but this is following an ancient Ted Formula, just like when they passed over Bob Sanders and the Honey Badger, twice. Once in the draft and then Free Agency.

I mean, here's his highlight reel attached to this post you're commenting on where out of the 20 or so plays covered, he wrap up tackles on roughly 15 of them.

The 5 or so plays where he isn't wrapping up include 2 plays where he's stripping a ball from a carrier that is already being tackled by another player, a pass break up, and a pick.

At the end of the day, this probably isn't a player expected to be a starter any time soon. He's most likely slated as a scheme-specific chess piece that helps fill out the Packers' rebuilt safety room, who will be asked to perform spot duty in specific roles and serve as depth.

I know the NFL season starts and ends at the draft for you, and what actually transpires in these players' careers and their actual performance doesn't hold any weight compared to their pre-draft analysis for you.. but let's see the kid develop and play before we condemn him to a wasted pick.

Oppy -
When you look at the choices
Brian had on the board.
You can't help but claim it's a wasted pick.
This is how I look at Brians choices-
Ok- - he didn't want a CB- Wrong
Take it away from Detroit after
our problems there.
He took a OL. - That could have waited.

The fact he had to have a ILB meant DeJean
was not going to be a Packer.
And as much as I know Bullard is a player.
He fell in Love with Cooper at ILB.

The third picks were a reach. -
He should have went after another Safety with the 3s.
If not OL

The LT was Valid. The failure to move up for DeJean vs the Edge is a head scratcher. They probably view Cooper as a crash and blitz guy. He's not the best tackling LB. Hafley seems to be moving in the direction of a gap shooting swarm/amoeba defense. Just don't get caught over-running the ball, like the Vikings used to do. The front four has to keep him clean.

Hafley has also stated that the DT's will be used in more penetrating, disruptive roles than perhaps in the past.

If that's the case, that will not align with keeping backers clean. They'd be responsible for sifting through the trash themselves if they let the dogs on the DL off the chains to go hunt.

It will be interesting to see what this defense looks like come mid season. Sure looks like they are attempting to tighten up the middle of the defense and the complete overhaul of the safety position with players who are generally do-it-all types with coverage skills suggests to me that Hafley is going to allow the corners to play more press man and go after the ball while the safeties provide insurance over the top.

JB =A OT was valid - But not unless
you target Walker for replacement.
I'm not picking on your pick. or Morgan.
I could see him as a LT.
But was it a Hole that could wait.
Tom or Jenkins have played it.

I would not have traded up for DeJean after he dropped.
I felt this safety class was that strong.
And LB would be his target after the DeJean drop.
(I had Payton Wilson as you know)
Still he wasted picks anyway in the 3rd.
Of course they could be good.
But not as much as a fan favorite.

Morgan is better than Walker who had mixed results as a LT. Move him to RT where he was projected to play by the DIC scouts. Let Tom go inside. As previously mentioned, I would only move UP for Q.Mitchell, but assumed he 's gone by #15.
Morgan was my guy because the O line was bereft of All Star talent besides, Jenkins and Tom. You cannot expect to win in the Playoffs with a guy like Nijman, Wagner, or the other guy they brought in for a couple weeks from the Golf Course, shifting Turner to LT where he was out-matched.

You state:

"When you look at the choices
Brian had on the board.
You can't help but claim it's a wasted pick."

Again, let me direct you to my previous comment where I commented:

"I know the NFL season starts and ends at the draft for you, and what actually transpires in these players' careers and their actual performance doesn't hold any weight compared to their pre-draft analysis for you"

The draft is, and always will be, a guessing game of projection. Most players drafted will fail to ever get a second contract awarded to them. Many players will be considered "busts" when it all washes out. Nobody outside of a team's personnel dept has any real idea what their big boards look like, or how they are evaluating their team need hierarchy or draft goals. There is simply no logic in claiming a draft pick is a "reach" or "wasted" based on any publicly available information. 1st round "Can't miss" prospects bust. Undrafted Free agents can be Pro bowlers. Until the dust settles, making any claims about reaching or wasted picks is a fools errand.

The proof is in the pudding. Let the players play and then, and only then, can anyone look back at a given draft and decide with any validity if a pick was a bad choice or not.

All the conjecture and debate amongst us fans is nothing more than barber shop talk. It's fun and entertaining, but it's meaningless. All that matters is how a player plays and if he contributes to the team. How and when they were acquired is literally meaningless as soon as they sign the contract.

There's no logical reason to compare Dejean vs. Cooper.
They don't play the same position.
The eagles had pick #40, the Packers had Pick #41.
You yourself said that once DeJean "slid" out of the second round, you would not advocate moving up to get him.
The Packers passed on DeJean in the 1st round to get a T/G.
The Eagles passed on Dejean in the 1st round to get a CB.

There is literally zero comparison between the two picks for anyone but you.

Exactly my thoughts. Situational player could play as a 3rd safety on the field in substitution of a true nickle CB or LB on a condensed field- where instincts, ability to read routed, and quick diagnosis/reaction time trumps the need for top-end athleticism to cover a lot of ground.

He certainly looks like he gets after it. Interested to see how the Packers plan to utilize him.

The interpretation might be that they really do think more of Dillard, Jones, et al., than we thought...

I wouldn't be leaning into that, myself.

IN EDIT: one consolation is that after hammering the OT position in rd 1-3, teams don't seem to be chasing OL in rd. 4-5 so far. Gives the chance for some value at 168-169, I've probably jinxed that.

Relax over there Leatherhead, the lineman start in a minute. Do you doubt the ability to find diamonds late in the draft. You got a first round tackle which you were crying for, and proceeded to bitch about it not being mid-second round talent DeJean, and now that the safety and linebacker rooms are full you're back to bitching about the line. I see him PROJECTED later in the draft than he was taken by most sources, but I don't see anyone PROJECTING he'd be an UDFA, either.

I'm not calling you a liar, I'm sure you found one analysis from some point over the last 4 months that PROJECTED him as an UDFA, but that's certainly not what the majority of outlets PROJECTED for Williams.

He's doing schtick at this point. Take absolutely nothing he's saying seriously. I'm assuming he's a hired character at this point, dispensing idiocy as a means of stimulating page interactions. Those pop-up ads are fired by eyeballs and interactions after all.

Yep. And that's still projecting him as drafted.

Not contending he would have been UDFA, just Pauline's bias where he would fit. Over the past thee decades his board is generally hiiting over 80%. I believe Mustapha is the better player. He had Mustapha ranked #108 and Lynch, A HOF safety, said he was surprised he fell out of the third rd.

I read that an Oregon coach contacted the Pack to congratulate them on this pick. He said Williams was the best player on their entire defense. Regardless of where the board pundits rank him, that is feedback coming directly from the staff that worked with him daily.

Dan Lanning was the D-Coordinator at Georgia, the Packers are familiar with his work...

For what it's worth, players' coaches are naturally biased, and having players from your program drafted earlier is good for recruiting purposes.

That said, yeah, I'm sure the Packers didn't need reassurance. They drafted the young man for a reason, they see something in him. Let's hope it works out for everyone involved. I like the film.

No idea how he will do but didn’t see the need to trade up to get him.

I almost spit out my lunch reading that PASS. After those last 2 draft busting picks I needed a laugh. Unfortunately, those last 2 picks were massive overreaches. And wasted a pick to boot trading up. Mason McCormick should have been a Packer and instead we still have a big roster hole to fill.

Maybe we can tradeup again and select Spencer Rattler since we need another backup QB.

Highlights video made him look like a LB/S hybrid type as most of it was run support and blitzing the qb.

4.6 speed does not spell deep middle safety.

Do you think Harrison Smith can run a 4.6? C'mon. Speed is super handy, but a tenth of a second in 40 yards isn't career defining.

Forest from the trees people.

True, he was a 4.55 guy at 212 Lbs. and mostly plays close to the LOS. Anthony Harris played more FS for Zimmer.

If Packers have a QB craving - my recommendation is D.J. Irons QB – Aakron Zips 6'3” 205lbs. A dual threat QB prospect with notable athleticism, a strong arm, and a great deep ball. Needs work in recognizing coverages. Reminds me of a small-school Joe Milton but unlikely to cost the Packers a draft pick - being a Priority Free Agent / UDFA.

Otherwise I see that Bucky was drafted in the 4th. So good for him. My favorite, Tyrone Tracey, is still waiting by the phone.

All you so called draft “experts”, every year you dog the shit out of the picks, no matter the GM, guys haven’t played one down and you are already saying they will suck. GB is one of the best teams in the NFL for the last 25 years, why don’t you follow our fellow teams in the central and see how that works out for you! This is just comical to read! Bet you dogged the Love pick 4 years ago also!

After the Hopper pick - I've decided to suspend any critical comments - as it appears that Gutekunst & Co. are drafting scheme specific players - that requires a working understanding of the specific scheme(s) - which is strictly internal intel. So now enjoying the Draft - with judgement reserved for on-field performances - in a few months and even years from now.

From his highlights he looks like a hitter. You can't draft all first round talent in the later rounds...but you can look for quality backups.

Cheese, Hopper was a 3rd round pick, that is a premium pick. I agree quality backups are usually in later rounds. If we wanted LB, Gray was right there for the taking. But since we filled the big LB need already with Cooper, What was the other biggest need? Interior OL, and Mason McCormick was sitting there like a Xmas present under the tree.

I would have no problem selecting Hopper @ #126 or later, or even picking another LB if he was gone. McCormick should have been that pick, it's a no brainer.

I don’t know how any of you 1/2 empty people find your way out of bed!! You’ll find something to complain about. Even a 4th rounder that you feel will somehow make or break the Packer’s season. Ha!!

Thankful that we have Gute that makes the tough decisions to improve the team. Packer’s are in great shape for a strong run this year!!

I get out of bed fine Reagan. My goal for every draft is to have the best draft of all the teams. I would hope that would be the Packers goal every year too. I also don't drink the "don't question anything the Packers do Koolaid." Or "the Packers know more than you ever will so don't even talk or post."

I disagree with the Hopper pick & trading up for Williams and Monk. I would have taken McCormick @ #91 and filled the other biggest need. T J Tampa-CB was available @ #126, and was the best value available. The Steelers and the Ravens are proven winners and are being praised for grabbing those 2 players.

That doesn't mean I am a bad fan. It's called giving my opinion. Regardless of my view on that part of the draft, the Packers are now set to make an extended run at the next 5 Super Bowls. GPG

4.6 in the 40? Who is he going to cover, the training staff? Certainly not NFL WRs.
