Camp Notes: Day 6

Some quick observations from day one of shoulder pads at Packers training camp.

  • Rookie Shemar Jean-Charles was getting the bulk of reps in the slot with the second team defense today and looked pretty good doing it. He won a handful of matchups with fellow rookie Amari Rodgers. Chandon Sullivan has been getting most of the work at nickel with the ones, but if Jean-Charles can put together a few practices like he had today, he might get a look with the first team.
  • Speaking of Sullivan, he had one of his stronger days today, which included some great recognition on an attempted backside screen to AJ Dillon.
  • Rashan Gary absolutely stole Billy Turner's soul on one pass rush rep in team.
  • Juwann Winfree continues to impress. He just keeps making plays with the ones, including a nice job taking a corner route into the perfect spot in the zone between the safety and the cornerback during early team work. Rodgers found him for a big gain. Yes, it's still early, and the deck is stacked against him, but he's looked legit so far.
  • Jaire Alexander got the first interception of Rodgers after the quarterback floated one to what he thought was an open Davante Adams on an over route. It looked like Alexander had come off his coverage of someone else going deep to make the play. Whatever the case, he was there waiting for the interception and took it back for a Pick Six. (Jaire jumped into the crowd for a bit after to celebrate too)
  • Safety Henry Black seems to be one of those guys who actually enjoys contact. Nice trait to have in a secondary that's been far too allergic to it the last few years.
  • Josh Jackson stuck with Davante well today. 17 got the better of him a couple times, as would be expected, but Jackson did a good job of staying with him overall. One one rep in team in particular, Rodgers tried hitting Davante deep up the left sideline but Jackson did a nice job getting physical within the initial 5 yards to throw off the timing then used the sideline as his help. It speaks to Davante's incredible talent that he STILL almost made the catch, with the ball ending up glancing off his fingertips.
  • Off day for Adams today, with two uncharacteristic drops.
  • In early one on ones, Darnell Savage got the better of Robert Tonyan in coverage but got up slowly after. After sitting off to the side being checked by a trainer, Savage got his helmet back and rejoined the drill.
  • No practice tomorrow. The team has a walkthrough but no public or media are allowed to watch. \
  • Go Pack.

Very early, but Josh Jackson has had positive notes on a few days. The CB battle may be getting a bit more interesting.

Barry using 2 down lineman is not very encouraging.

Almost everybody does that when they're in Nickel.
