Camp Notes: Day 4

Some quick observations from the fourth training camp practice of 2021.

A few observations from an overcast day at Ray Nitschke Field for practice number four of training camp.

  • They really need to get pads on soon. There definitely seemed to be a lot of work being done in the run game today, but with no pads, it's really hard to know how real some of those holes the backs had to run through truly were.
  • Davante Adams is a cheat code. Rodgers hit him deep down the right seam for another big gain today, this time Josh Jackson was the victim.
  • Jackson played with the ones today with Jaire held out of team stuff after he dropped out yesterday. Presumably just precautionary.
  • With King still on the NFL, that made the starting CB tandem Eric Stokes and Josh Jackson.
  • Ben Braden got some run with the starters at left guard. Adam Stenavich indicated this offseason that Braden would be competing for a starting job at both guard and tackle.
  • Jordan Love did a great job with his cadence today, almost getting the defense to jump offsides at one point and then taking the snap and firing a completion to Jace Sternberger as the defense recovered.
  • Speaking of Love, he's been doing some nice work at the line of scrimmage on the check-with-me plays, getting the offense into some advantageous run calls.
  • At one point early on in practice, Davante Adams got after undrafted wide receiver Chris Blair for not finishing a drill at top speed. After a few quick words, Davante gave him an encouraging pat and resumed his place in line. The message seemed clear: The standard is the standard and its expected to be met on every rep, whether its a drill or a play from scrimmage.
  • Dean Lowry has had a really nice start to camp. He combined with Ty Summers on a blitz that would have resulted in a sack of Rodgers.
  • Keep an eye out for Carlo Kemp once the pads come on. Things haven't looked too big for the undrafted free agent out of Michigan.
  • Kamal Martin had a nice pass breakup of a throw from Love over the middle of the field. Campbell and Barnes seemed locked in as the starters inside for now, but Martin has had a solid start to camp.
  • Saw some of Amos dropping down into the box today with Henry Black taking the deep safety role.
  • That group actually gave up a huge TD to Adams from Rodgers when it appeared there was a late rotation in the secondary after the snap. Adams did a sweet stop and go and was three yards past Stokes for the touchdown.
  • No practice tomorrow. Back at it Monday morning.
  • Go Pack.

Glad we are beginning to see some more of the younger players getting looks early. Let’s see what we have and get real evaluation going, especially once pads go on on Tuesday.

Still hoping for good things from the older-younger players such as Josh Jackson and Ty Summers. Maybe they get it just in time to keep their careers.

Reading on JSOnline that Kamal Martin is sliding down the depth chart in this unpadded part of camp.

But Martin made his mark last year when the pads went on. He may not show up as much in shorts and helmet, but when they put the pads on he seems to shine.

Apparently looked good today. As Nagler says above: “ Kamal Martin had a nice pass breakup of a throw from Love over the middle of the field. Campbell and Barnes seemed locked in as the starters inside for now, but Martin has had a solid start to camp. “

Looks like Barnes/Summers and Campbell/Martin to start. Very early days though and no pads.

With Nagler - time for "lads with pads". This is when the real training camp begins and the field begins to separate.

"Ben Braden got some run with the starters at left guard."

I'm glad to see him make the most of his chance.

Unfortunately, Simon Stepaniak retired today. This thins out the competition a little bit, and now those three late-round OL picks from 2020 are in danger of ending up being just 1 (Runyan) with Hanson's chances of making the final cut being pretty low. Maybe Gute was telling us something when he took 3 more OL this last draft.

Teams always need a good depth at offensive line, and Packers have done an excellent job of drafting and bringing in free agents. After losing Wagner and Linsley, they brought in Kelly (FA) and Myers (2nd round) as well as a few free agents. You can't tell who will step up in training camp and make the difference, and it helps to have a very good line coach.

The most injuries in the NFL are on the OL. Simon Stepaniak shouldn't shock anyone. TT never drafted injured players; just for this reason. They never become long term starters. Runyan is being pushed. The guys who can move will be on the OL.

Runyan also took snaps at C with the 2s, which--if he's capable--is an important development with regard to how they handle game day actives and depth.
