Camp Notes: Day 10

Some quick observations from Tuesday's training camp practice at Ray Nitschke Field.

  • With Kenny Clark out due to injury. TJ Slaton got work with the first team and seemed to do some nice things, including breaking through on a rush that caused Aaron Rodgers to escape the pocket. He also got his hands up quickly on a three step drop to deflect a Rodgers pass.
  • Tipa Galeai got some work with the first unit during the 2 minute drill. Mike Smith mentioned that Galeai has looked good rushing the passer but needs to put on about 10 pounds and you can see why. He had a few nice rushes today but if you played him in regular down and distance teams would just run right at him. If he can make a mark on special teams and get on the 53, he's could help in obvious pass rushing situations.
  • Elgton Jenkins joked a few days ago that he'd be down for playing tight end and taking a screen "30 or 40 yards" - well, today he was a lead blocker on a throwback screen to Big Dog and let me tell you, he was trucking looking for someone to hit. No opposing defensive backs will want to be in the way if the Packers ever run this play in an actual game.
  • We got a look at a new wrinkle with Aaron Jones out today. Rodgers sent Dillon in motion out of the backfield and then gave the handoff to Amari Rodgers up the middle on one play during team.
  • Rodgers found Bobby Tonyan deep at one point on a gorgeous moon shot on what looked like a post corner route.
  • Jonathan Garvin had another nice inside rush today (he had one yesterday during a padless practice inside the Hutson Center) against the first team that would have probably resulted in a clean shot of Rodgers if he hadn't gotten tripped.
  • While Jon Runyan got the bulk of the work at left guard with the ones yesterday, it was Ben Braden's turn today.
  • New pickup Chauncey Rivers had one really nice outside rush against Dennis Kelly during team stuff. Left Kelly totally flat footed as he got around the corner.
  • Jaire Alexander looks like he's picking up right where he left off. He's just so, so good.
  • Kylin Hill had another good, solid day from what I saw. If he carries his early camp play through the preseason, I think he's your #3 RB.
  • Back at it tomorrow.
  • Go Pack.

Thanks, Aaron. Good stuff.

Just one question about the Tipa Galeai “needs to put on 10 pounds” comment.I think this is his second camp with the Packers. Is this statement about a new DC giving his “new” assessment or was this something they knew about. Gaining 10 pounds seems like an offseason goal. Doesn’t seem possible during camp? If anything, he might lose a couple of pounds in the heat.

He sounds like he’s added some since last year, just a long way to go. That’s why a guy with his film went undrafted: just too slight to be nfl ready. Even with 20 pounds he will be lighter than the others, but he is fast. Can he learn to cover and be a Fackrell type?

Thanks Coldworld. I remember him from last year and he had a little pass rushing ability. Clearly a project. Didn’t realize they wanted him to gain a few. I wish my Doctor had that opinion. 😂

Tipa needs to add more than 10 lbs, and 30 lbs. is more like it. He weighs 229 and playing at 255 or 260 would be much better. I heard that he lacks strength and power, though is quick. I feel he ends up on the practice squad and works on his weight and strength in the next year.

Already penciled in hill. He was well liked at the senior Bowl.

I like Hill, but I want to see him protect in anger and also see Taylor now he’s up to speed. Will be a good fight that’s barely started.

I'm expecting we will see Jordan Love run the ball a lot during pre season. He is not very experienced and probably will not wait very long for a WR to get open, if it doesn't happen right away I'm expecting he will take off. Something that we haven't seen from a QB in Green Bay in quite a while. Aaron very seldom will tuck the ball and run. And of course the coaching staff would rather he just throw the ball away if no one is open to avoid injury. I think Jordan being much younger and more athletic will take off and run with it..? Will he be the leading rusher in preseason game #1....? Will find out soon enough it all begins on Saturday.

From what I saw of Love in his Utah film, he’s no Mike Vick running the ball. Kind of a leggy straight line runner. I’d rather he learns to find his outlet guy or throws it away.

I agree, but he did score 7 rushing TDs in 2018.

He can run, but I agree totally that I want him able to play from the pocket first and foremost.

I think the first thing the coaches will tell him is "no unnecessary hits", especially in preseason games. He should be throwing the ball away when he's pressured.

Don't want him risking himself for a job he's already wrapped up, and it's more important to see him working the offense.

The one thing I saw from Love in college is he doesn’t look jumpy and stays in the pocket against a rush. Just has to make his reads better.

Thanks Nags. All excited for the preseason; love to see the guys on the bottom of the 53 perform and earn a spot.

As for Tipa and his weight...my treat- Tipa, lets meat at the black otter supper club for the extreme cut- open anytime invitation.

If all stay healthy, Pack will keep 4 RBs - you heard it here first.

I think with F/H backs and Amari Rodgers on the roster there is no need for a fourth RB.

I had a 4th round grade on Kylin Hill. He could be a real steal considering he was one of the last few picks of the entire draft. I think Fennel had the best report on Hill "The guy has an A grade at nothing but a B in everything." He is solid in pass pro, solid inside/outside runner/ solid as a receiver or 3rd down back. He is a very good 3rd back. The job is his to lose I think unless Taylor sets the world on fire in these games.
