Brett Favre Announces He'll Return to Green Bay for Hall of Fame, Jersey Retirement

A press conference will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. CT.

Uncertainty no longer.

Shortly after the Green Bay Packers announced on Sunday—in conjunction with the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Inc.—they'd be holding a press conference regarding Brett Favre on Monday, the former Packers quarterback let the cat out of the bag on his own website.

"I'm pleased to announce that I will be returning to Green Bay, Wisconsin in 2015 for induction into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and retirement of my jersey," wrote Favre at OfficialBrettFavre.com.

Not that people coudn't guess what the subject of Monday's press conference would be.

It's been speculated for years—pretty much from the moment Favre retired from the NFL—when he'd return to Green Bay to be formally honored.

The only question was whether Monday's announcement would include Favre's jersey retirement in addition to his induction into the team's Hall of Fame, and Favre confirmed that would be the case.

Monday's press conference will take place at 1:30 p.m. CT, held inside the new Hall of Fame still under construction inside the Lambeau Field atrium. It will be streamed live at Packers.com.

The exact dates on which Favre will be honored have not yet been released. Historically, the Packers hold their Hall of Fame induction ceremony the Saturday before training camp opens.

As for the date to have his jersey and/or number retired, the 2015 schedule will likely not be released until next April.

Players tradtionally have their number retired in a ceremony held during a game, although there's no protocol stating it has to be done in such a way.

During the Packers most recent shareholders meeting, team president Mark Murphy expressed concerns that Favre wouldn't want to be booed during a ceremony in his honor.

Favre, during a recent radio interview, said he was not concerned about being booed.

Not until 2016 will Favre be eligible to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Oh.

I keep hearing talking heads say "Nothing can take away Favre's 16 years in GB".

True enough. It was a special time for the Packers.

But it's also true that nothing can take away the way things ended.

And that's where I am on Favre. I remember both the good and the bad. Maybe the most succinct way to say it is to acknowledge what Favre himself wanted us all to believe when he signed with the Vikings: He was a great football player that played for the Packers. Which is not to say he is a Packer, much less a great Packer in the lines of Starr, Nitschke, Butler, Driver, etc, etc.
