Around the NFC North

News from around the NFC North division including the Green Bay Packers and their rivals the Minnesota Vikings, Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears.

Chicago Bears:    The Bears once promising season came to a crashing end with a loss to the rival Detroit Lions in a battle to stay out of the NFC North cellar.

Changes will be abundant around Halas Hall this off season.  Head Coach John Fox will almost certainly lose OC Adam Gase who is a hot head coach prospect.  The Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns are said to be two clubs strongly pushing to hire Gase as early as this week.

DC Vic Fangio may also get consideration for one of the HC openings.  Several key players will probably be gone as well with Matt Forte, Martellus Bennett and perhaps even Alshon Jeffery leading the list.

The Bears are said to be looking to strike a long-term deal with receiver Alshon Jeffery. CSNChicago.com reports. The 6-foot-3, 216-pounder who finished the season on injured reserve totaled 54 catches, 807 yards and four touchdowns this year in just nine games. The soon-to-be 26-year-old is primed for a major contract be it with the Bears or someone else, having accumulated 228 receptions, well over 3,000 yards and 21 touchdowns over the last three years (41 games).

Sports Illustrated reported that Forte, whose contract had expired after the season, left a message in his locker after departing for the offseason. The 30-year-old, who is set to become a free agent this offseason, left a shirt that reads “WORKHORSE” on the back of it, along with Forte’s No. 22.

 Last Week:   Lost vs. Detroit

This Week:   NA

Season Record:  6 - 10

Place in NFC North:    Last

Detroit Lions:  Head Coach Jim Caldwell may have saved his job with a strong end to the regular season including a win over arch-rival Chicago.  For now that is.

With Lions owner Martha Firestone Ford in the process of hiring both a president and general manager Caldwell may not make the cut going forward.  Even if Caldwell stays there may be a further shake-up on his coaching staff.  One person that QB Matthew Stafford would like to see stay is OC Jim Bob Cooter who took over from fired OC Joe Lombardi in mid-season and seemed to revitalize Stafford and a stale Lions offense.

Candidates for the General Manager position are rumored to be the Patriots Bob Quinn, Seahawks Trent Kirchner, and the Packers Eliot Wolf.  All come from highly respected and winning organizations.

Last Week:   Beat Chicago Bears

This Week:   NA

Season Record:    7 - 9

Place in NFC North:  Third

Minnesota Vikings:  The young upstart Vikings earned the NFC North title by defeating the Packers at Lambeau Field and now have the honor of hosting a Wildcard Playoff game at home to what is probably the hottest team in the league, the Seattle Seahawks.

Not only is Seattle hot but they are becoming healthier.  It was reported that star tailback Marshawn Lynch who had been out due to injury is again practicing with an eye toward playing against the Vikings.  Given the complexity of returning from hernia surgery his return this week is far from a certainty however.

Adrian Peterson once again won the NFL rushing title for a third time despite being held to only 67 yards vs. the Packers.  His 1,485 rush yards fell short of the 1,550 yards which triggered a de-escalator clause in roster bonus for 2016, from $5M to $4M.  The 1,485 was the lowest total for a rushing leader since 2007 when LaDainian Tomlinson tallied 1,474.

Cordarrelle Paterson led the league in kick return average bringing back two kicks for touchdowns. He might have finished with three had Mason Crosby not stripped him of the ball on Sunday night.

As a team the Vikings finished 16th in points scored, 29th in yards gained, fifth in points allowed and 13th in yards allowed. They had the league's 31st-ranked passing offense, but the fourth-ranked running game led by Peterson.

Betting Line:  The Vikings are home underdogs to the Seattle Seahawks (-6.5)

Last Week:   Beat Green Bay

This Week:   Host Seattle Seahawks

Season Record:   11 - 5

Place in NFC North:    First

Green Bay Packers:   What a difference a year makes.  Last year the Packers had the lead and were just four minutes away from a trip to the Super Bowl when their season unraveled in spectacular fashion in the NFC title game.  This year the Packers are no longer the league’s leading scoring team, but instead have been in free-fall for most of the second half of the season and are limping into the playoff race.  Another epic fail at home against the upstart Vikings, in a game that should have been theirs to win, means they open the playoffs on the road with little momentum or confidence (despite what Mike McCarthy proclaims).

For head coach Mike McCarthy, his staff and players the question is simple:  How do you fix a sputtering offense that has mustered just four touchdowns in the past three games?  While the question is simple the answer apparently is not.

With an offense seemingly broken beyond repair, the Packers will be counting heavily on their defense in order to win and advance in this post-season.  That was also the thought by pro bowl guard Josh Sitton who said he felt bad for the defensive players because “they’re playing their ass off week in and week out, and we’re (the offense) going out there and not doing our job.”

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently pointed out that in 2014 the potent Packers offense put together 17 plays covering 40 yards or more good for (tied) third in the league.  This year they have seven, tied for last.  Missing are the explosive game-changing plays by the offense as well as a largely impotent running game.

For the season the Packers finished 15th in total defensive yards allowed, including sixth in fewest passing yards allowed and placing 12th best in scoring defense.  The Packers offense ranked 23rd in yardage and 15th in scoring.

For their rivals this coming week the Redskins offense ranked 17th in total yards and 10th in scoring.  Their defense was ranked 28th in total yards and 17th in scoring.  Washington proved to be particularly vulnerable to the run where they ranked 26th giving up a whopping average of 122.6 yards per game.

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins had a breakout year where he ranked tenth in total yards at 4,166 and earned a respectable passer rating of 101.6.  Cousins notched 29 touchdown passes to only 11 interceptions.  Clearly stopping Cousins will be a key component for the Packers defense this coming Sunday.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers had a solid but merely-mortal year for Green Bay.  He ranked 17th in total passing yards at 3,821 while throwing for 31 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.

Key injuries:  All eyes will be on left tackle David Bakhtiari (ankle) and CB Sam Shields (concussion) both of whom have missed multiple games.

It is painfully obvious that the Packers have no one on their current roster who can adequately play left tackle other than Bakhtiari and Shields is their best corner.  Earlier this year this writer had proclaimed the young left tackle as the player the Packers could least afford to lose for any length-of- time other than Aaron Rodgers.  At the time, it was assumed that the receiving corps was talented and deep that they could cover for a Jordy Nelson injury which subsequently proved to be wrong.

Betting line:  The Packers are one-point underdogs on the road at Washington.

Last Week:   Lost at home to Vikings

This Week:   Wildcard game at Washington

Season Record:    10 - 6

Place in NFC North:    Second

I just realized i have never cursed at forte on the tv screen. I have had a silent respect for him until now. He has been a workhorse.

Detroit can kiss my posterior. That home loss still tastes bad in my mouth. I had to use an extra pair of undies after the hail mary.

Im glad adrian lost 1 million this year unless it was going straight into his kids bank account.

No need to comment on the pack. Just win.

I agree. Forte has been excellent throughout his career on a crappy team. Peterson's an idiot and shouldn't be near pro football. I hope his kid grows up big enough to beat the crap out of him.

What does it say when you're a division winner and #3 seed with a respectable 10-6 record and you're a touchdown underdog to the #6 seed? Yikes!

Do I have to pick a team I want to see win in that one? The only plus to this matchup is that I'm going to get to see one of these teams lose.

No need to spin anything. --- Seattle is quite a bit better than the Vikes. Plus, the Hawks have much more playoff experience. --- You have two tiers in the NFC playoffs this season. -- The Packers, Vikes and Redskins are pretenders who should feel fortunate they are even in the playoffs. ---- Arizona, Seattle and the Panthers are the real contenders. --- It'll be a "bird" coming out of the NFC for SB 50.

The treat waiting for the Packers should they win is Arizona. How GREAT would it be to return the favor from 2009 when the Packers beat the Cardinals in week 17, but then lose to the Cardinals when Dansby was doing Pull-ups from Rodgers Facemask before he fumbled.

How Green Bay plays Jordan Reed will be the match up to watch. Hopefully TT observes what a Great, fleet footed TE can do for an offense opposed to one that runs a 40 like a O-Lineman.

Anything can happen in the Playoffs but the Packers just haven't put together 4 solid quarters of football in a row in a while, hard to imagine they could now. The Redskins give up an 4.8 yards per rushing attempt. If this is REALLY a run first team (Really Mike?), then this would be the weekend to actually Stick with the run.

Cards fans are all new to the whole winning thing. They think since the team has been good very recently they are the greatest. They really need some manners for teams that are perennial winners. They just don't get it, to be honest.

If we play them in the playoffs, I'll be there for it. Could have gone to the game 12/27 but chose to go to the playoff game should that happen.

We couldn't hope for a better playoff scenario. If we get the injured back and MM opens up the offense, we have a great chance against Washington. If that dreadful offense stinks up the field for 3 quarters I may bury my cheesehead in the backyard. Perhaps in my neighbor's yard (for the smell). Of course, will have to wait for the frost to leave.

As much as I have disliked the Vikings over these many years, I gotta respect their effort. That is a good looking team and their arrow is pointed up. I hope they lay a beating on the Seahawks and wipe the smile off of Pete Carroll's face. That will be the best game of the lot. How's that coming from a life-long Packers fan.

No. The Vikings are an improved team, but certainly not a GOOD one. They have several good players on defense, a kinda ok but injury prone TE and a let's wait and see WR. Oh and the child beater.

That's it.

The 2015 Minnesota Vikings played out of their gourds this year. They will get crushed on Sunday. And I'll be laughing for every second of it, then I'll quickly become a Panthers fan next week against the Seaturds.

Next year, the NFCN title goes back to the only team that has been halfway decent the past decade. Us.

I can't tell you how much I hate the fact that a crappy Vikings team somehow won this division! I love the Packers, the franchise, but the 2015 team seriously pisses me off. They have SO much more talent than the Vikes and they crapped the bed. The first time GB has lost ALL its division home games since 1968. THAT IS PATHETIC!

As for this weekend, all I want is for the Vikings to be embarrassed. Badly. (Then I want the Seahawks to be embarrassed badly the next week) The Packers can win this weekend and I wouldn't get that excited about it. I just want the season to last one day longer than the Vikings. I have a feeling that's all this impotent bunch can manage.

Get some young offensive line depth in the draft, another inside linebacker to replace Matthews and move him back outside, and perhaps a fast tight end and fast wide receiver.

Whatever the deal is between McCarthy and Rogers needs to be figured out in the off-season. They are both big boys. Time to make it work. Get along!!

Go anyone but the Vikes, Seahawks and Pats. After that I don't care.

Oline depth and a fast, pass catching TE are musts, and it would be wise to get a taller fast WR, because it would be foolish to expect Jordy to be at his best from day one.

There is something about what you said that will make me feel a whole lot better about this season. If the vikes clean out thier lockers after the game and the packers last one more week it will take some of that bitterness of losing at home for the division away from me even if it is a tad bit childish.

I don't care that it's childish. The Vikings always have, do currently, and always will suck. By and large, their fans are the red-headed step children of the NFL. Most of them have an astounding Napoleon complex regarding their older and better brothers to the east. Plus, they are stupid fans. They blame refs. They blame the NFL. ANYONE but their frigging team that has NEVER won a title.

I hate the Bears, but I respect them. I have NO respect for the Vikings organization. They've been dirty and classless from their first year when they tried to take out Starr.

I dont know who gave you a dislike but im sure it was one of them vikings fans infiltrating the system. You are a true packer fan. I must stick up for a few decent vikings fans that i know but you are mostly correct. I did an internship in Minneapolis and the pack got a lot of respect because of favre. It was classic when he switched sides and brought them to the door of the superbowl. If you are ever with a viking fan and sombody has a pack of smokes try this, take the plastic off the pack and set it upside down. Ask the fan what it is and say its the vikings superbowl trophy case.

Just read an interesting article over at Titletown Sound Off by Chris Kristofco called 'McCarthy's Expiration Date Has Passed' (sorry for cross promotions, CHTV). After I maintained my objectivity the title tried to sway me from, the article made a lot of valid points about how after 10 years, coaches naturally lose influence as the message becomes stale.

Kristofco brought up a great comparison that I never thought of in Andy Reid's tenure in Philly. His last 2 years were 8-8 and 4-12 before Chip Kelly took essentially the same personnel to a pair of 10 win seasons. Then Reid went on to do good things in KC. Take out the Hail Mary & last minute stop against the Chargers and our season would be 8-8 right now with no playoffs. If the discussions elsewhere in blogs/podcasts about the possibility of MM losing the locker room are correct, could next season be our 4-12 or thereabouts even WITH new draftees & Jordy returning?

Maybe it is time for a fresh face & Mike to move on to success in a new locale? Like Reid, I don't believe at all MM's lost his abilities, it just may be time for a fresh start somewhere? Just a very interesting take, I thought. Naturally, if you look in the comments, he was crucified by #intedwetrust acolytes for even daring to suggest it.

'Take out the Hail Mary & last minute stop against the Chargers and our season would be 8-8 right now with no playoffs.'

If Rodgers hits Cobb in the endzone they likely win that game, and if Crosby doesn't botch a FG they win that game. They could very well be 12-4 vs 10-6 the same way they could very easily be 9-7, 8-8...

I completely agree. The NFL's a game of inches these days, not yards. The Giants had 6 matchups or so, I wanna say, where they led going into the 4th and lost in the last 2 minutes or something crazy like that. Thought it was an NFL record to boot and now Coughlin's walking away as a result. At the end of the day, coaches are judged by the 'L' and not the 'possible W' the majority of the time.

The problem with close wins/losses like this is that it polarizes the fan bases to either see the team sucking or seeing the 'almost' mentality that lends itself to 'everything's okay, let's not change.' In my debates w/#intedwetrust folks, I've found no matter what, they seem to lie on the side of 'almost' losses like you're referencing here to the point of insults like in Kristofco's article. I don't always subscribe to the other side, I just look at the season's whole to say whether the team's more of an 8-8 squad or should be 12-4. I would venture to say most objective fans would say we should be 8-8 this year but perhaps I'm the Negative Nilly I'm labeled as?

As a Packer fan, I just want TT to get ahead of a trend for once in his career. If MM is losing the team, let's move on before another year of downslide happens & Rodgers is 33 and not 34 going on 35. Mike's earned the right to go out positively & still be a hot coaching commodity as Reid should have. And the team deserves to stop any bleeding before it begins & capitalize on a prime coaching location as GB would be before any disarray tarnishes that (if that's the case). I mean, a fresh, energetic look coupled with new draftees, maybe a free agent, & the return of Jordy/Montgomery could easily push this team back to 13-3 or so w/a SB run in the cards.

Not sure MM will ever realize that his message is old. --- Even Holmgren knew when to leave. --- I'm afraid the only way MM hits the road is by being fired by a GM other than TT. ----Only a disaster like 5-11 or 4-12 in 2016 will send MM packing.

Thompson is ahead of the curve. All of the most successful franchises are sticking to the Packers draft and develop model. Why do you think his assistants are getting hired for GM positions. Even most of the perennially bad franchises are getting away from using free agency.

This is a much more thoughtful approach (and meaningful comparison) than the reactionary diatribes we hear against MM and TT. It got me thinking a little more about it, and while I'm not convinced that MM has reached his useful shelf life, I'm thinking about it more objectively. Thanks!

How does your coaching and message get "Stale" when:

1) roughly 20-30% of your roster transitions every year

2) Your roster is consistently ranked as one of the youngest overall rosters in the league each year

The idea of a successful program getting stale and the message getting lost is silly to me. Success and winning keeps vets attention, and any rah-rah stuff shouldn't be old to the 20-30% of new faces any given year, or to the younger players in their first -5 years, which makes up the majority of our roster anyways.

It's interesting being the underdog in the playoffs. When's the last time we were underdogs? This actually makes it more exciting than year's past. I felt more angst in prior years. Now I can just relax and see if we have a fighting chance.

I mean...that Seattle loss is the worst thing I've ever witnessed in my sports life. Partly because we really were good enough to win it all. This year, now I will be pleasantly surprised if we make a miracle run. With single elimination tournament....who knows? A few ints or fumbles can happen any game. Let's hope they bounce our way and keep hope alive. GPG.

I wouldn't mind being the underdog like we were in 2010. The team was galvanized & rolling heading into the postseason. The feeling around this team is that they just want to end the season & regroup. Totally different and why those comparing 2010 & 2015 aren't paying attention imo.

Jenkins, Woodson, Collins, Jennings, Driver, T. Williams, Finley, Hawk, Clifton, Wells and so on.

The 2010 team lost 6 regular season games.(same as 2015). However, 4 losses were by 3 points each (2 OTs), 1 loss by 4 points and 1 loss by 5 points. -- This is a HUGE difference from the 2015 season.

If we had been good enough to win it all, we would have. That second half beat down showed that we couldn't or wouldn't put 60 minutes of championship football together. 55 minutes of good football isn't always enough. We can hope and pray, wish and what if all we want. "It was a really good performance, but I didn't like the ending." The script was pretty good but some of the bit players messed up their lines. Look where we are now. Could've, should've, would've, didn't.

Your right about being an underdog. Although last year nobody thought we could beat Seattle. Also that was the worst game I ever watched. All I wanted was to beat them in Seattle and avenge the Fail Mary and other losses and we shocked them and had it in hand. I watched it with a neutral friend of mine who was watching the game just for the beer and entertainment and ended up getting into it as much as me. All throughout he said the game was over and we would win, and then THAT. Most emotionally draining and heart breaking loss ever. Looking back not scoring as much as we should have in the first half and later was our downfall and I thought MM learned his lesson but I don't think he has I also think Rodgers relationship with MM went south from that point on. Oh well. Go Pack Go. Kill the Redskins and maybe shock everyone by going further even if it's only another game so we have something positive to remember this year.

So basically ... we need to get Alshon wearing a Green n Gold jersey next year. I could not imagine an offense with Alshon Jordy and Cobb that would be pretty scary that is ...if Aaron was still Aaron. As for this game ....I hope our defense wins it for us because we all know that our offense is just plain bad.

You can have him. All i can say is if megatron will only play for a contender next year and he saved his bucks, TT and him will both have googly eyes for each other. A one or two year deal can happen. Jefferies will get a 4 year deal if he changes zip codes at his age.

a3 WR set featuring Calvin Johnson, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Eddie Lacy plus either a TE or FB in the backfield would be a mighty freakin' scary offense for a defense to have to face.

I hope the both consider the option. Watching megatron play within the division he's been a pro's pro. I know TT has a pair of working gloves that fit him. Being introduced to the nfl in detroit at the all time low makes me think he has a preference to walk out of the nfl on a much higher note. He deserves much better. I cant say that fot AP.

The Line at Washington is Pick-Um, that means Even. Is this Vegas's way of getting 1 last Nickel out of me, or do they think the game is this close. LVT

ray, Hit $1,000 last night again. The woman hit $600. Doing really well on my Slot Strategy. I will have more money on the Pack this Weekend, & the NFCC @18-1. GB -1 is Not a Good line for GB, Vegas has them there for a reason, either to make a Killing, or they actually think they are going to win. I can't lose this week, so I'll be in there. I hope Bak can Play. Have you heard anything on Shields?

I have to say, as Incorrect as it sounds, going all the way back to the Denver game, this is how I wanted GB to look going into the Playoffs. I just hope enough people are looking the other way. Go Pack!! LVT

OK, so all TT needs to do is get a great pass-catching TE and a tall fast WR, picking from the 20s in the draft order? Check. No problem.

Seems like we are vastly inferior to Redskins and are not even given a chance. Hope the team reads some of this garbage.

1. Not one packer was listed in the top fifty for tackles, interceptions on defense.
2. Rogers was rated 17th in passing out of 30
3. Cobb was rated 38th our of 50 in receiving
4. We had no one listed for rushing yards.

So just how the hell did this team win that many games? There just are no stars on this team this year

You must give it to the coaching staff then but wait, you can't do that as a troll, can you? Go get bent.
