Are the Packers Passing on Rookie Running Backs?

With the recent moves at the RB position, could the Packers be avoiding drafting a running back this year?

In the last seven days, my feelings on the future of the Green Bay Packers running backs room have changed several times. If you had asked me last Sunday what I thought it would look like, I would've said Aaron Jones, Day 2 draft pick, and Emanuel Wilson. Since then it's gone from Aaron Jones, Josh Jacobs, and a draft pick for about two hours, to Josh Jacobs, a day 2 draft pick, and Emanuel Wilson, and now it's gone to Josh Jacobs, AJ Dillon, and draft pick OR Emanuel Wilson. The re-signing of AJ Dillon on Thursday is certainly a welcome sight. Especially when Thursday morning I looked at the #28 jersey I bought for my 2-year-old son this past summer and thought to myself, "Maybe I should've bought him a different player since that one didn't even last him a year." I made sure to purchase a larger size so he could at least get another year out of it before he sprouts upward, so I'm glad the player chosen will still be on the team.

But while the re-signing of old Quadzilla for one more season makes me happy, it puts a bit of a snag in the idea that the Packers would be searching for their future feature running back during the upcoming NFL Draft.

Josh Jacobs and a Day 2 rookie running back would make sense. You have your veteran back who can help lead the rushing game while you sub in and out your rookie who can get a few carries a game and learn the ropes in relief eventually developing into a lead back himself. Having a young prospect learn behind the veteran for a few years has certainly worked for the Packers in a few other positions, so why not try again? But then adding another veteran running back kind of puts a kink in those plans. Now you have your feature back in Jacobs, and a returning change of pace back in Dillon. Where does that leave room for a rookie running back?

For answers, we need to look no further than about four years ago.

Been here before

Back in 2020 when AJ Dillon was drafted in the second round, the Packers had two running backs exiting from rookie contracts. Both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams were owed new deals in the off-season and the Packers would have to make a decision. To help move this decision in the right direction, the Packers drafted AJ Dillon in the 2nd round. Jones didn't have a huge rookie season, but 46 carries for 242 yards and a touchdown isn't bad at all for a rookie who was essentially the third-string back.

This led the Packers to allow Jamal Williams to walk in free agency, keeping Jones and Dillon.

So, while the competition was close, the Packers still believed AJ Dillon would be a great addition, so they let the veteran go while continuing with the rookie. Could this end up in a similar situation?

Even though the odds are sort of stacked against a rookie running back, I think the Packers could still grab one on day 2 of the draft. The rookie running back could learn behind Josh Jacobs and AJ Dillon for a bit, collecting some reps here and there. AJ Dillon is only on a one-year deal. Josh Jacobs, it's said that the Packers could have an out of the contract after two years. So, where does that leave a rookie running back? With 1-2 years of experience under their belt and still relevant. Perfect for a feature-back role, or at least close.

This season, a rookie running back could have many reps taken away by Josh Jacobs and AJ Dillon. However, I think learning by watching it all fold out in the past, the Packers could benefit by still drafting higher and keeping the idea that this could still be their future answer if the others don't work out.

It's all true but you are missing one piece - Emmanuel Wilson. Most of us remember his run from preseason, but if his career will be defined this way is yet to be seen. I think those several times he hit the field in 2023 he did his job. 6,0 yds on avg in 26 att is far from representative sample but leaves nothing to complain about as well. It is an argument to give him more chances and test him in longer stretch. We don't know what is opinion about him in the bulding. Maybe they all are comfortable with him as RB3.

All in all I still think Gutekunst will select one RB on 3rd day. Competition, depth, long-term comfort and special teams. The new guy will jump into Patrick Taylor's place and compete for RB3 (and I wish for even more).

The return of A.J. Dillon immediately knocks Emmanuel Wilson down to the #3 spot. If they draft an RB within the first five rounds, which seems quite possible, Wilson gets knocked down to the #4 spot and is on the practice squad at best, as they are unlikely to cut a player who was selected in the first five rounds. I think Wilson will either have to beat out A.J. Dillon for the #2 spot or hope an RB doesn't get drafted in the first five rounds. The future looks murky for him.

You don't need to spend a high R2 to get a top shelf RB. Remember Aaron Jones was an R5, Priest Holmes was an UDFA, Arian Foster was an UDFA, etc.

Emmanuel Wilson is not on the roster, meaning he has no contract with the Packers. Ellis Merriweather does, along with Jacobs and Dillon. The point made that Dillon is on a one year deal wouldn't prevent us from drafting a RB is valid, IMO.

We drafted Jones, and he didn't play that much as a rookie. We drafted Dillon, and he didn't play very much as a rookie. Maybe they'll try that play again and take advantage of an opportunity to add a real good player to develop for a year before he takes over for Dillon.

Emanuel Wilson is only technically not on the roster because he was an exclusive rights free agent. Although that is effectively a team option, it functions as if he is a FA for roster purposes.

Wilson has been tendered and, like Caleb Jones and Daniel Whelan, will reappear once he signs it, typically before the start of the off season program.

Wilson, Whelan and Jones are securely on this roster to all intents and purposes as long as the team wants them. Their only choice would be to retire.

I agree with you. There is going to be some very good talent drop into the 3rd round if the consensus of mock drafts are any indication.

Dillon isn’t a sure thing to even make the team. Keep in mind, my understanding is if they cut him it only costs 167K against the cap. There’s a reason they did the contract that way. I see them picking a RB who weighs around 200lbs in the first 3 rounds and maybe another later in the draft. All three described currently under contract are 230+lbs or so. They need lightning, a 3rd down scat back type. One with shiftiness and very quick to the hole and ability to extend the field vertically. They will bring in that type of player and one of the current 3 will be cut IMO.

Lastly, RB is one of the easiest positions for a rookie to make an impact in the NFL, so, no need for them to get very little playing time like Jones did.

Benson will be gone early in the second round while Jonathon Brooks because of an ACl injury will likely drop into the third round. He is expected to be fully recovered by the start of training camp. If Healthy,he would be a steal for the Pack at 88 and there would be no rush to get him into the lineup early. Arguably when healthy many had him rated as the best RB in the draft prior to the injury. So yes, I would love this pick in the third round. I think Gute will too.

Keeping Dillon was big. So was signing Jacobs. We now have a nice 1-2 punch at RB. Signing McKenzie and Nixon also made our secondary stronger. So, where is our most critical need now? Opinions vary; some say O-line others say ILB. O-line was critical until Rasheed Walker entered the picture and really developed over the season. Losing Campbell at ILB was also big. Currently, ILB leaves the greatest void and should be addressed with our first pick to grab the best ILB in the draft at 25. The two best are Payton Wilson and Edgerin Cooper.. That said If S/CB Cooper De jean is there at 25 that would be tempting. He can play CB or Safety. I think we can get top quality OL in the third round. I think the top RBs and top ILBs will go the first half of the second round. So, ultimately it all depends on how the draft folds out and how well it is played by the Gute. Despite my trashing of Gute after the loss of Aaron Jones I think it will all make sense at the end of the day. In Gute we trust. Time will tell.

WD, the problem I have with Cooper is that he isn't head and shoulders above, Wilson, Colson, Gray and Wallace, who we won't have to spend #25 or #41 on. I know Cooper shouldn't be picked even as early as #41. If we want one of those 5, it's probably going to have to be with #58, or they will all be gone by #88.

I actually think that FA Isaiah Simmons is still better than any of those 5 rookies, and he isn't projected to sign for big money. As far as the draftable LBs, I think Colson and Wallace are the best fits for GB.

There will not be any "Quality" OL available in the 3rd round, even if we waste picks by trading up. The absolute best choice for GB in this draft to use our first pick on, is to draft an O-lineman. We will get a TOP 10 player that way for sure that can start from Day 1.

This draft falls really well for GB, where our picks are located, if we don't slide some LB or DT into the first 2 picks. We could easily get great players by taking OL @ #25, Safety @ #41, LB @ #58, CB or OL @ #88, and RB @ #91. The strength of each group is right in the range of those picks, except maybe getting a Top 20 OL @ #88. It would still be a good backup, but not a starting caliber player.

Before you say you can't plan a draft like that, I'll say yes you absolutely can this year because of where the strength of the individual position groups should come off the board at.

We will have multiple choices of Top 10 OL @ #25. The top 3 Safeties should be in play @ #41, Cooper might be the only LB gone before #58, and he is not a clear cut best for us. I would say 5 CBs that GB would want are still there @ #88. And other than Benson & Wright, the majority of the RBs will be available @ #91.

Even trading back from #25 or # 91 would still get a really good OL and RB, while gaining valuable picks. Trading up would be disastrous and there is no need to do so.

You make some good points and I hope you are right. I think we agree more than we disagree. I like the idea of taking OL. Safety and ILB with our first three picks. Just not necessarily in that exact order. And, it will depend I think on how the draft falls. Thanks for your polite response . I received four thumbs down from some of the fans. A rough crowd as they say. But they don't ever say exactly what they hated about my comment. Oh well.

What happens to Patrick Taylor? He's a Restricted FA. When called upon, he played well for the Packers. I, too, think GB drafts a RB on Day 3. Sign Wilson and Taylor and draft a guy to develop on the PS. Dylan Laube, Rasheen Ali, Cody Schrader and Jase McClellan should all be available on Day 3. GO PACK, GO!!!

He was not tendered so he’s no longer restricted. I suspect that the resigning of Dillon means Dillon will take on that role due to his ability in protection. Walker is as yet unproven if promising as a protector and will likely get a shot to nail down the number 2 spot.

We will sign one or more RBs, probably more likely a more Jones type change of pace project would be the most likely draft option, but all could easily be UDFA pick ups now Dillon is here unless there is one we feel falls well past value late.

Any pick up probably needs to be plausibly able to get through to the PS to develop if Jacobs, Wilson and Dillon are all healthy. In reality, LaFleur likely won’t play them until they’ve had time to show or develop protection skills that seem particularly unrefined in this year’s class.

I fully expect a RB will be drafted...but now I believe he is a day 3 prospect, unless a top of the class player drops into he third.

The luxury purchased with the impact players McKinney & Jacobs and the solid depth named Dillon and Nixon plays nicely into the opportunity to load up on OL.

The draft has many plug and play OL...and is deep in future early starters and deep depth. Might Team Gutey draft 3 OL with the first 5 picks? You know, let them grow up together, with Love and the young O.

It would be a good draft to invest the most important "group" in football. All position groups have to play together...but none with the communication and cohesiveness/synergies needed for the OL.

A pure OT, a potential G/T swing player, a solid C/G prospect, a LB, DB (CB/SS) in the first 3 rounds.

Day 3 go shopping for BAP at RB, DL, LB, DB, WR, even QB.

Wow Jannes, nobody would turn that draft down. That draft has 5 potential starters in the first 5 picks. That is what we should expect this year.

Hicks is also a wildcard as some draft guys love and some hate him. I really like him.

After the Bucky Irving article this week and rewatching highlights, I am back to liking him more than Benson & Wright. They are both really good too and slightly faster than Bucky. Where he wins is making people miss and yards after contact, which was 740 this year.

Brennan Jackson has untapped potential because of how he was used in college. He is a better pass rusher than given credit for.

Check out a late CB that I discovered. I always pick Storm Duck-Louisville or Kamal Haddin-Tenn if I missed on an earlier CB in my mocks. The new guy is Decammarion Richardson-Miss State. Miss ST always has strong defenses. This guy is 6'2 188lbs 4.34 40 and 9.80 RAS.

I like Dillon, but would not have brought him back. He doesn't run to his size. Just because a back is physically big does not make a power back. Every season I've waited to see the true Dillon and unfortunately we have.
Bring on Estime in the 3rd if you want a solid short yardage, goal line type back. Don't be fooled by the 40 time. Plays much faster.

Dillon's downturn in production can be attributed to the number of games Jones missed, he was not drafted to be the lead RB. For the amount they will pay him he will be a real asset especially if Jacobs stays healthy and the old RB combo is in place again like with Jones. People forget how well he pass protects and how he catches the ball out of the backfield, just saw a stat that showed based on the number of catches per first downs made he was high on the league list. With Jacobs who has been described as an Eddie Lacy type runner on 3rd and 4th downs and short you can have both backs on the field to prevent the defense from concentrating on one.

I think Dillon was drafted to be the eventual lead back. You don’t take a RB in round 2 to be a career back up.

Maybe this is the shock to the system that gives Dillon the edge that’s missing to unlock his potential. He’s a consulate professional and hard worker, but RBs need a little fire in their belly that I think he had lacked. It would be great if that’s true. In the meantime he’s our best protector (or most proven) and that will get him snaps.

Jones had just led the league in TDs when we drafted Dillon, and was a Pro Bowler during Dillon's rookie year. Since then, it's been a time sharing deal with Jones getting the majority of touches but Dillon adding his fair share as well. I don't know if Dillon was drafted to be the bell cow, but he's been a very good #2 for us.

If you want to go the Estimes route, why not go all in: Jakobi Buchanan, Army. 26 rushing TDs, almost never stopped behind the line, a former lacrosse player old school running fullback with agile feet and 255 pounds. Lead blocking or goal line/short yardage type snaps would finally be truly physically threatening.

Who did he play against and what was the level of competition? Just like Laube, Buchanan has UFDA written all over him. Do you see him as a FB/HB and if so, why not just use Kraft or another TE there? Bigger and better athletes, blockers and pass catchers.

He’s a true fullback, so not impossible. 7th possibly. John Kuhn was a UDFA I’d have in short yardage over what we’ve had recently.

A FB isn’t going to play a lot of snaps but they are key ones. Rather than a one dimensional RB or a H Back compromise, go all out physical. Help our OL out too.

Try looking at film of him rather than opponents or public draft pundits, particularly when looking at smaller school or a-typical athletes/roles.

Can he catch? Size wise he's the perfect H back/FB. I think he'd be there off at 245-250, he looked quicker to me earlier in his career. But no career catches is big. They don't throw the ball a lot at Army, he'd have to show some natural ability in that area. Sinnott and Bell are interesting too. Both would be huge upgrades over Deguara and make the offense very scary.

He’s a true FB who runs with the ball. I don’t think they’ve ever targeted him, so who knows, but lacrosse players have to have good hand eye skills, so perhaps that says more of the Army approach.

He’s not a HBack. I don’t think we use one much. Tyler Davis/Sims will take as 3/4th TE (and Davis perhaps would have taken) the snaps from Deguara. What JaKobi would do is provide a short yardage/goal line power option and lead blocking. Limited role, but do it well rather than with a one dimensional RB. Make physical PHYSICAL.

One point to consider: the contract signed by AJ Dillon has no guaranteed money. He's back, but he will have to fight for a spot. Jacobs is guaranteed a job. Dillon is not. Like Jones, fans like Dillon. But his production has dropped, even at a time when the Packers offense was on a roll.

It all depends on how the draft board shakes out but I'm certain they will draft a running back sooner than later. The draft is about finding players to improve your team regardless of whether you have a competent starter. While smaller in stature I could see Blake Corum coming on board. He's tough as nails but has a burst the zone-blocking scheme could use, along with good hands and blocking. With a 17 game season having three good backs is essential. Dillon and the rookie would be working cheap. Wilson has never impressed me, though the coaches seem to like him.

With LaFleur being so insistent on confidence in competence at protection, Dillon is going to make the roster for that alone in my opinion. Indeed I’d guess that’s a big factor in bringing him back. He may be beaten out by Wilson as the second back if all are healthy, but Wilson, let alone any new back, is unlikely to gain equivalent trust as a protector based on LaFleur’s past caution.

I’d agree, though the scarcity of ILB in the draft and elsewhere makes me wonder if that isn’t going to be just as high a priority. I don’t think we can discount S either, we still have just one and no SS. Need wise those positions dominate. I’d be surprised if we don’t see days one and 2 dominated by them as far as the draft allows, even if it requires some pick trading.

The draft 'always' depends on how the board falls and who is available at each Packer selection. I believe Gutey undoubtedly has an idea of who his top 3-5 players might be at every spot by round before the draft but if a talented player falls he did not expect to be there he is going to take a shot at that player.

Everyone assumes the Packers might try to take an LB yet in FA and they might, but I say should a higher-rated Safety be available for the right price in FA Gutey may take the Safety. Then double down on linebackers in the draft particularly since there are some very good linebackers available in rounds 2 and 3. Gutey has several options available to him to beef up the Safety and linebacker positions with FA and the draft.

I do not even question Gutey doubling down hard on OL and LB's in the draft. This is a great year to strengthen the OL and LB's. I hope he takes at least 3 OL and make the OL a true strength for Jordan Love and Jacobs. Frankly, I am shocked Dillon was resigned but after thinking about it for the price Dillon just replaced Taylor. Wilson seemingly is being given a strong opportunity going into camp to grab the #2 back over Dillon. A few years ago I was convinced one of Kylin Hill or Tyler Goodson was going to be the running back to replace Aaron Jones. Wrong!

With the draft unfolding the way it will I see Gutey drafting a tailback with similar type qualities (running and receiving threat) as Aaron Jones at one of these selections #58, 88, or 91. I'd be shocked if he didn't!

Dillon's deal is only 1 year.
This signing is just the Packers doing what they so often do. Grab the odd veteran to round out a position group before the draft (whether as a starter or more often, a backup. This gives the Packers the maximum flexibility in the draft, so if it doesn't fall out right on draft day, they have some kind of backup already in place.

I think that is very much LaFleur’s way. He wants to be ultimately completely certain of protection in his scheme first, as he’s said often. Injury may rush that, but Wilson is now in year 2 and Dillon is quite possibly going to be the designated 3rd down back in the Taylor role anyway.

Kylin Hill, before the knee injury and his ensuing stupidity, looked like we got another late round AJ steal. He fell way farther than expected and looked really promising early on. All that talent and a 5 cent head. Too bad.

His was personality issues by all accounts. We also lost a potential Jones type, Goodson, to the Colts, I hear because of protection preventing him playing in LaFleur’s eyes. LaFleur is not a guy who will just plug and play rookie RBs straight away willingly.

They had Jones and Williams when they drafted Dillon so I dont think adding Jacobs and resigning Dillon tells us anything about their draft plans. I wouldnt be surprised at all if they drafted a running back.

The Packers are being smart. They are not currently in a "position in need" at RB. If a player they especially like, or think could have some potential with, effectively, a "red shirt" season, they could draft a RB in the later rounds. If not, they should be OK for this year. This way, they don't feel pressure to fill a need, but have the luxury of drafting someone, and giving them a season to learn. This has worked out well with QB's they've drafted recently, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this issue.
