After Further Review: Packers vs. Bears

Ross will provide a few observations every Monday afternoon following a Packers game based on a few viewings of the condensed version of the game on NFL GamePass.  While this might not be the All-22 camera deep dive that might be more "educational", it should provide a conversation point for the rest of the week.

Elephant in the room, yes, this piece is coming out on a Tuesday.  I was in Green Bay on Sunday and to the dismay of local twitter "personalities" I live quite far from 1265 Lombardi.  Yesterday was mostly consumed by a 9 hour drive back to my place of residence.  All is not lost though, and the lack of timeliness of this article actually provided the (potentially accidental) availablilty of the All 22.

The hangover taketh but it also giveth.

Wow.

I feel like I could end the piece with just the phrase "wow" but Aaron, Al and the rest of the powers that be may not appreciate that.

After actually watching the film, the player that got the most grief that was undeserved was Bulaga.  He wasn't dominant (Bakhtiari was, though, good lord), but it looked like he was getting killed and the fans I was sitting around were really abusing him.  He played fine.  Kizer did some dumb stuff and frankly Rodgers danced around and put him in some though spots, too.

We have all jumped all over CM, lets see how he responds to all the criticism he deserves. I'll give him the benefit of rust and frustration for now, but he needs a really good game against the queens. The roughing the passer was still inexcusable.

Hi - Watch the CMIII replay close! Count the steps CMIII takes before the OL moves. He's still very Quick!

Why is his own running into him. Ever watch a fighter after he's been hit to much? CMIII isn't Rocky. But I agree he's not showing restraint.

4th and 1 -

CM3 is an overpaid above average chase ILB at this point in his career. He can't defend the run and he can't beat OTs. Unfortunately, for him, Burks has a higher ceiling at that exact skill and needs to be groomed. Unfortunately, for us, the Packers OLBs are hideous. So expect to see CM3 looking really old and bad quite a bit this year. IF he's not hurt. Which is just as likely as not.

I remember a few years ago when we opened against the Bears and Sam Shields laid an absolute turd on the field. We were all blasting him, but then in week 2 and beyond he bounced back to be one of our best defenders (one whom we've not been able to replace yet, I might add). Here's to hoping for a similar thing from Clay.

You know the difference there?

Sam still has the physical capability to play at an NFL level. As an OLB in the 34 defense, Clay does not, and has not since 2014 at the latest.

69 is awesome, but I can't believe that on the big play to Montgomery that got called back it was McCray that got called for the hold and not him. DBakh just ran up and bear-hugged his guy. It was really quite comical looking.

It is comforting to see a recount after a second watching that backs my initial observation after watching the game live- Bulaga wasn't nearly as bad as many fans felt; he was rusty but not overtly over-matched vs. a premier pass rusher in Khalil Mack.

The difference between Khalil Mack's stat line and Nick Perry's stat line: Perry had +2 Tackles and Mack got a pick-six on a throw from Kizer that would not have happened had any competent QB been on the field.

If this is what the first real game action for a right tackle coming off an ACL vs. arguably the most complete pass rusher in the league looks like.. we're ahead of the curve.

Do you even watch what you post about? The clip above from the 2nd half shows a chip on Mack then Mack disengaging to drop off into coverage on Monty.

And you give Bulaga great credit for not giving up a sack to a guy in pass coverage?

Did you bother to count that of the 42 snaps only 14 came in the second half? Did you break those down into pass rushes v non rushes?

It sure does not appear so. It's fine to be a bulaga fan but not fine to misrepresent what happened.

The point of the clip was that Mack couldn't get pressure on AR when the ball comes out quickly? That wasn't the point of the clip. I don't think the clip proves very much.

maybe you need some glasses. the ball clearly was not out when Mack reversed him, not even close. Favre going to Driver v the NYG in the NFC Championship game was closer to that incorrect and not very astute observation.

So, how did Bulaga do against bears not name Mack? Not very well.

How did bulaga do in the 2nd half v Mack? Terrible.

mack forced two penalties that did not count as snaps. Two. one for procedure for 5 years. once for intentional grounding. Half the distance to the goal. Huge potential disaster. 6 plays were runs.

Of the 14 remaining pass plays one was a true double team with 2 OL.
One was a quick screen with Graham blocking Mack. One was an inside move. Mack got another hit on Rodgers and forced a throw away.

The TD pass to Cobb is all over the internet, you literally can not be more wrong. Rodgers held the ball nearly THREE SECONDS after mack dropped into coverage. wake up

"The offense just runs better when Rodgers is getting the ball out quickly. It's unfortunate that it seems to require an injury for him to start firing rockets within the rhythm of an offense"

I don't know why either. It's really too bad he does this. I'm getting to the point I don't think it's ever going to change.

I generally speaking don't believe outside influence means much to NFL players, coaches, and organizations as a whole.

With that being said, I don't think it ever will change, so long as there is a public fan base and media machine that refuses to look at the play of Aaron Rodgers objectively. It's always the WR's supposedly not getting open (the film says otherwise) or the OL not holding up protection (even though Rodgers holds the ball for 3+ seconds.) When those two fallacies fail to cover it, we can always look forward to blaming MM's play calling.. even though Rodgers has unprecedented control over everything at the Line of scrimmage, and often makes multiple calls to redirect everything. The only thing MM really controls without Rodger's power of veto is the personnel on the field.

No one holds Rodgers accountable to improve.

Oppy - Rodgers is already a 1st ballot HOFer and a 2 time MVP with possibly more to come. How much do you want him to improve?

I like the short quick passing game as much as anyone but I think ARs approach is to try to stretch the field early in the game to keep the safeties deep hopefully get an early lead and then go to the short throws when the safeties back up. I'm not saying that is the correct approach but I think that is what AR is trying to do early in the game.

We'll see how it goes next week, but his injury may dictate the approach for the foreseeable future. Thanks, Since '61

I've never questioned his talent or the fact he's the best QB in the league.

The fact remains, he makes mistakes that are correctable, first and foremost is holding onto the ball instead of taking what is there as the rule, not the exception.

It is amazing to me that when we don't win super bowls, everyone is ready and willing to fire the head coach because it's not good enough, but when the QB can definitely improve how he approaches games, the response is "How good does he have to be?"

Yeeeeeeah, and Rodgers is the problem...hes just not good enough. If only he was better and made better decisions!

Just quit striking the fear of God into defenses. Quit using every tool in your box, quit confusing defenses and making them think twice. Just...just stand there in the pocket from now on. I'm sure by the end of the season defenses will have no clue how to defend this.

Just remember, anytime the offense stalls, everyone blames everybody except the QB, and if you watch the games, all the excuses about WRs not being open, the OL not supplying enough time, the plays being called differently, etc and so forth? Yeah, a lot of times, those excuses don't hold up to scrutiny.

Oppy - I think that you are correct. Some drives do stall because of AR but not every drive is going to result in a score either. That is an expectation that is impossible to meet. AR has complete control of the offense but it's not always going to perfect. Sunday evening he showed what he can do when he gets some help from his defense.

Drives also stall due to penalties, poor execution, and good defense. I believe if Rodgers doesn't miss the second quarter the Packers score 30+ points against the Bears. We'll never know. Looking ahead to the Queens I just hope that he is ready to go. Thanks, Since '61

Favre was a sure-fire HOFer when MM arrived in town. I do think MM was able to rein in Favre, and that Favre accepted some coaching and improved. The point is that MM seems incapable of getting AR to play within the offense, or that AR is incapable of accepting that coaching (assuming the attempt is being made). And since AR is so good, few point out his foibles.

Oppy is right. Rodgers sometimes wants to play backyard hero ball football every play instead of playing with timing and the rhythm of the offense. I like the backyard scramble plays just as much as anyone but you can’t run offense doing that every play. When he plays on time and lets his receivers do there job the offense gets a rhythm and plays much better. Use your scramble ability when need just to not on every play it can’t be sustained. You don’t develop any timing and you take more hits and have more chances to get injured. When he got injured it forced him to play within the offense and play more how Brady plays. Get the ball out quick with accuracy and let receivers get yac and frustrate dline and take Less hits. I just hope when healthy he plays with timing and uses the scramble plays when needed not every down cause that’s when he plays his best.

Yes, Yes, Yes. His speed on that blitz was insane. I think we’ve all been waiting for a speed guy/s that most other teams have to get to the qb quickly and disrupt. While Jackson missed the sack, he disrupted the play and those plays definitely make the qb think a little more as the games goes on.

Oh, and love that clip of Graham running the classic Richie Rodgers 1.5 yard out. A play that has caused me to pull out more hair over the last decade than pretty much any other Mike McCarthy habit.

Glad to hear that Graham was getting a great deal of attention. I'll take one catch for seven all day if it gives GB's other three WR's space.

I can't entirely blame the first clip on Bulaga. He seemed to be able to stifle Mack, but Kizer jumped right in front of him and gave him a clean angle for the sack.
We need some clips of the new looks and blitzes. There were some ballsy calls by Pettine like rushing two off the right from coverage on a bubble formation. They guy knew what to call.

After further review Rodgers plays QB as well if not better than any one that I have ever seen play the position. Also, Pettine's defense gave the Packers offense the chance to get back in the game. That gives me hope for this season.

Take out Kizer's 2nd quarter debacle and the Packers win this game going away. CM3 is still guilty of running himself out of plays and our opponents know it and use it to their advantage.

Move CM3 inside until Burks is ready and put Gilbert on the edge and our LB play improves. Put our best players on the field. Right now our 4 best LBs are Perry, Gilbert, Martinez and what is left of CM3. When Burks returns we can rotate CM3 onto the edge and inside depending on the opponent and down and distance.

My concern with the offense after this game is I don't think we had a clear plan for using the TE position. What is the point for having Lewis, Kendricks and Graham? Mccarthy needs to use them better.
On defense, its obvious we need to not only put pressure on the opposing QB but to FINISH the play. Too many times we covered well but didn't get home. Trubisky should get credit for turning clear negative yardage plays into positives when he had nothing.

That better be rust or they have a serious issue at that spot and Gilbert and Perry need to stay healthy and play a ton of snaps."

Just saying, What IF, Mathews was just rusty Sunday night?

Maybe, just maybe he was rusty?

Hopefully that is the case. Hopefully the sky isn't falling and we are overreacting to just 1 bad game. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

Regardless of Mathews, they have to upgrade the depth. Fackrell was Terrible! On 2 of his 4 snaps he lost outside contain, didn't set the edge and the RB ran right where he should have been. It was UGLY!

Does anyone know who influenced MM's offense? His is not any form of the west coast offense that I can see.

From what I can see, the MM offense seems to be more of a hybrid of the Joe Gibbs Redskin offense X the traditional Run and Shoot.

Is anyone running a true version of the Syd Gilman/Bill Walsh/Mike Holmgren offense anymore?

Good question. Deserves a good answer!

I remember very clearly when Holmgren took over and commented on the previous season’s offense, “well, first of all, the QB is getting hit way too often.” The “west coast” was predicated on 3 and 5 step drops and quick releases. Hardly see that style anymore.

I thought that Jamaal Williams did some committed blocking in that game - not the comment that you really want to make about a RB but he needs to get some credit for it. He's saving some roster room by not having to have a dedicated FB blocker. He really needs Jones' elusiveness and ability to bounce outside to make plays.

Did anyone watch the Philly\Atlanta game and see that double read option RB play. It takes a lot of skill but boy its effective

Observations:

1. Clay will look much better against Minnesota.

2. I wouldn't play Rodgers against Minny. We can afford a loss, but this team can't lose Rodgers. Time for a week off to get that knee healthy.

3. Mike Daniels needs to play more snaps.

4. Cobb's focus on a couple catches in this game was tremendous. That 75 yarder and Kizer's throw were inches beyond defender's reach.

4. We'd better see much improved use of our TE's against the Vikes.

5. Our corner group looks flat-out scary.

6. This defense will change substantially with Burks on the field.

7. With DB-heavy packages, the job Clark and Wilkerson did limiting the run was remarkable--though largely overlooked.

8. We have a punter.

9. Risking Cobb on punt returns might not be the wisest move going forward.

10. Only 1 more week without Aaron Jones.

Bulaga started holding a lot in the 2nd quarter. While not obvious on these clips, the original game tape shows a lot. On the play that injured AR, Bulaga had his arm hooked around Mack, preventing him from getting to Rodgers first. As AR goes down and Mack lowers his center of gravity, Bulaga just about ends up having Mack in a chole hold.

IMP, Bulaga no longer has the lateral quickness needed to play OT against speed rushers. And his balance is a bit suspect against bull rushing. Not a good sign of things to come, unless the officials allow his to continue holding like crazy. My guess is that they will continue letting him hold a lot.

I thought Kizer looked decent. He seemed poised in the pocket save that strip sack. My feeling there was that drag route wasn’t one of his primary reads. And that he may not have had a clear view out that way with Mack still on the line dancing around the WR. It looked like Baktari was being push right into Kizer when he bailed. My guess is that the pump fake was to hold the DBs so one of the receivers could break into the right corner of the EZ. I think he was going to slide over to get a lane outside Mack, thinking Bulaga would drive him inside.

The INT on the screen was on the center releasing his man prematurely with a beeline to Kizer. He was almost on his butt when he threw that Favre like prayer. Yes, he should have just eaten the ball and taken the sack. But, M3 was in a hurry up offense. So, Kizer was ‘just trying to make a play’ (surrounded by 10 stumblebums). Just kidding. My take on that play was a piss poor block by the center followed up by a fantastic read by Mack. Mack saw where Kizer was looking and knew he was about to be tackled. So he broke off his rush into the passing lane. Sometimes the other teams’ defenses make great plays. It just happens.

Right now, I am worried about CM3 being on the field and the disappearance of Ha Ha Dix. Although both players made one or two decent plays, they need to do more or sit on the bench.
