Reviewing the new faces and titles on the Packers offensive coaching staff

The Green Bay Packers offensive coaching staff will look very different for the first time since Matt LaFleur was hired as the head coach, in 2019. After three years, and especially the last two, as one of the best units in football, the offense suffered a brain drain, with multiple coaches receiving higher positions in Green Bay or elsewhere. The biggest loss is former offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who’s now the Denver Broncos head coach. Luke Getsy also left the Packers to be the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator. And those two moves opened the door for a sequence of changes. Take a look:

  • Offensive coordinator

Out: Nathaniel Hackett

In: Adam Stenavich

The first and biggest change was the guy immediately under Matt LaFleur. After three years with the Packers, Nathaniel Hackett moved on to be the new Denver Broncos head coach. His tenure in Green Bay was recognized for his leadership and teaching skills, as he was an integral part in installations and to establish an efficient red zone offense - or what Hackett himself would call, the gold zone.

The new offensive coordinator is former offensive line coach and run-game coordinator Adam Stenavich. Well-respected, he has been a good complement to LaFleur, who has a background more inclined to the passing game. Stenavich gained notoriety during 2021, when the Packers suffered numerous offensive line injuries and had backup players ready to step in and still be effective, if not spectacular.

  • Quarterbacks coach

Out: Luke Getsy

In: Tom Clements

Getsy has a long history with the Packers, with a stint under Mike McCarthy. He came back in 2019, to the initial LaFleur coaching staff, because he was respected by Aaron Rodgers. As he went to Chicago to coordinate the offense and Justin Fields, another old friend is back in Title Town: Tom Clements, Rodgers' first position coach at the NFL level.

Clements was the QBs coach from 2006 to 2011, an important tool when the Packers transitioned from Brett Favre to Rodgers. In 2012, when Joe Philbin was hired to be the Dolphins head coach, Clements was promoted to offensive coordinator. He spent his last two seasons in Green Bay as an assistant head coach, and even called plays in 2015, an experiment that wasn't very successful. His last job was as quarterbacks coach in Arizona, working with Kyler Murray.

The expectation is that his return was a strong sign that Aaron Rodgers would also be back.

  • Passing game coordinator

Out: Luke Getsy

In: Jason Vrable

Aside from being the QBs coach, Getsy was also the passing-game coordinator during his last two seasons with the Packers. Now, the gig goes to wide receivers coach Jason Vrable. Although relatively young, as a 37-year-ol coach, Vrable has been in the NFL since 2013, with stints in Buffalo and with the New York Jets before going to Green Bay in 2019. Initially, he was hired as an offensive assistant, but was promoted to wide receivers coach in 2020. Now, he receives his second promotion in three years to have an expanded role in the staff, especially in third down offense, a role that was relegated to Getsy.

  • Assistant quarterbacks

In: Connor Lewis

A major in math, Lewis entered the football world as an analytics guy with experiences with the New York Giants and the Oakland Raiders. He has been in Green Bay since 2016, first working with data analysis and technology. Then, he went to the coaching side, first as an offensive assistant in 2020, and as a special teams assistant/game management specialist last season.

Now, Lewis goes to a position that didn't exist under Matt LaFleur. He will work under Tom Clements to help the quarterbacks. Although his exact role hasn't been announced yet, it's expected that he will be an invaluable tool for young QB Jordan Love.

  • Tight ends

Out: Justin Outten

In: John Dunn

Nathaniel Hackett tried to take Adam Stenavich away to Denver, but the Packers blocked the move. Then, tight ends coach Justin Outten ended up being hired to be the Broncos offensive coordinator. The new position coach is John Dunn, who had the same role in Maryland between 2011 and 2015 and with the New York Jets from 2019 to 2020. Last season, his first with the Packers, Dunn was a senior analyst.

Dunn has worked in the NFL since 2016, with a brief stint in UConn in 2018. He was an offensive quality control and offensive assistant with the Bears between 2016 and 2017.

  • Offensive line

Out: Adam Stenavich

In: Luke Butkus

Stenavich is still on the staff, but now he has more assignments as coordinator. Because of this, former assistant Luke Butkus will be the man in charge of the offensive line, hopefully to work with the full band - David Bakhtiari, Elgton Jenkins, and Josh Myers handled injuries during last season.

Nephew of Pro Football Hall of Fame and former Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus, Luke entered the NFL with the Bears between 2007 and 2009 as offensive assistant and assistant offensive line coach. After stints with the Seahawks, Jaguars and Illinois University, he was hired to the initial LaFleur staff. During his time in Green Bay, Butkus has been praised by LaFleur because of his teaching ability.

  • Assistant offensive line

Out: Luke Butkus

In: Ryan Mahaffey

With Butkus promoted to position coach, the assistant OL coach is going to be Mahaffey, who started his career in the NFL with the Packers last season as a quality control. He played in the pro league, but was mostly a camp body for the Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, and Miami Dolphins. He has previous experience at the college level, but only as tight ends coach, wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator. It's the first time he's working full-time with the line.

  • What doesn't change

Running backs: Ben Sirmans

Wide receivers: Jason Vrable

Coaching assistant: Ruvell Martin

not to be rude, but clements looks like hell in this pic. I know football isn't a fashion show, but do the packers have a publicist? or a razor?

The trio of LaFleur, Hackett and Getsy were good at many things, but lousy at in-game adjustments. The Packers often struggled to adjust to unexpected defenses even with a HOF QB. I hope that LaFLeur, Stenavich and Clements will be much better at in-game adjustments. It is hard to win championships if you can't figure out what a defense is doing in-game and adjust your game plan accordingly.

I really have no idea if Stenavich has that in-game capability, but I thought Clements was part of some pretty good Packer offenses. Perhaps he brings that skillset to the table.

Nice overview of changes. I'm little surprised to not see changes in ST Coordinator and ST assistant. I do not know if you are also value ST very low, as Packers did for decade. I hope not.

Also, the statement: "The expectation is that his return was a strong sign that Aaron Rodgers would also be back.", believe do not hold the ground. As already reported Tom Clements retired at the end of 2020 season and stayed retired until Packers call. I doubt he came for Aaron Rodgers needs. I strongly suspect Packer hired Tom Clements to be developer of Jordan Love, same role he played when Aaron Rodgers needed to change his bad habits and to learn proper technics. I do not see reason for Tom Clements to come back from retirement, if not for chalange to develop second high level QB from the beginning in less than 2 decades. I bet Tom Clements is hire for Jordan Love, no matter if AR will play another one or two years for Packers or he will be gone before new season begins...

Not that worried as most of these coaches were here already and are familiar with the offense.I'm excited to have Bisaccia on the staff as ST coordinator.

If not Rizzi as new ST coach, Bisaccia is a good choice in my view.

It looks like an upgrade for the most part, though Hackett will be missed. There was no mention of the special teams new coach and also linebacker coach. Losing Mike Smith to the Vikings stings, but he is good friends with Mike Pettine who is also with Minnesota. Now we wait to see which free agents return and if Rodgers and Adams are back. I still expect a couple of surprise moves.

No mention of other coaching changes because this article was focused on the O, not STs or D.
