5 Things to Watch in Packers at Falcons: Can Love Stay Clean?

5 things to watch as the Packers look to start the 2023 season 2-0.

After opening the season with a dominant victory in Chicago, the Green Bay Packers are on the road again in week two, facing the Atlanta Falcons in a battle of two 1-0 teams.

Here are five things to watch as the Packers look to go 2-0.

Stop Atlanta's running backs, make Ridder pass

In Atlanta’s 24-10 win versus Carolina last week, Desmond Ridder only had to throw 18 times, completing 15 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. Ridder is a safe and limited passer and is unlikely to carry an offense if asked.

Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier carried the ball a combined 25 times against the Panthers for 131 yards. Allgeier had two rushing touchdowns, while Robinson scored by brilliantly beating three defenders after catching a pass in the flat.

The rookie was Atlanta’s leading receiver with six catches, and there were only 5 catches in the game by traditional pass catchers.

Atlanta’s offense runs through their backs, and if Green Bay’s defense can stifle that running game and make Ridder beat them with his arm, they stand a great chance of victory on Sunday.

Green Bay’s running back usage

The biggest X-factor for the Packers this week is Aaron Jones’ availability. He had 127 total yards on 11 touches in Green Bay’s week one win, as well as two touchdowns, before checking out of the game with a hamstring injury.

Questionable for the game on Sunday, Jones’ presence, or lack thereof, will drastically impact the explosiveness of the Packers offense. Number two running back A.J. Dillon looked far from dynamic a week ago, picking up just 19 yards on 13 carries.

While he wasn’t solely to blame – the run blocking left plenty to be desired on Dillon’s carries – there’s no question Jones offers a different level of playmaking ability, both on the ground and through the air.

Even if Jones can only take a limited workload, his mere existence on the field would make a significant difference to Atlanta’s defensive plan. After his pedestrian showing in week one, it will be interesting to see if Patrick Taylor or Emmanuel Wilson eat into Dillon’s carries.

Wide receiver hierarchy

The status of another Packer questionable with a hamstring injury, Christian Watson, is also of substantial interest. As Green Bay’s only true deep threat, Watson would open up the offense if he is able to go this week.

In his absence and with Romeo Doubs also dealing with a hamstring issue last week, Dontayvion Wicks surprisingly took the most snaps among Green Bay’s wide receivers against the Bears.

If Watson remains out, keep an eye on the receiver rotation to see whether Wicks, Samori Toure or Malik Heath steps up alongside Doubs and Jayden Reed.

Can Jordan Love stay clean?

In his first NFL season opener, Love avoided putting the ball in harms’ way as the Packers won the turnover battle 2-0.

That might be more difficult this week facing an Atlanta defense which impressed against Carolina. Recently signed star safety Jessie Bates II baited Bryce Young into a pair of almost identical interceptions as the defense only gave up 10 points.

Love isn’t a rookie, but early in his tenure as a starter he is bound to see plenty of unscouted looks. While the Falcons will aim to have Ridder throw as little and as safely as possible, Love’s ability to protect the ball will be crucial on Sunday.

Tucker Kraft vs Ben Sims

Third-round pick Kraft barely outsnapped Sims in week one, with the undrafted Sims, claimed recently from the Vikings, seemingly the preferred option as a blocking tight end.

It’s been a slow start for Kraft, who’s head appears to be spinning as he makes the jump from South Dakota State to the NFL. Sims meanwhile has legitimate NFL talent and was very much a draftable player.

There’s no reason to panic, despite Green Bay’s recent record of drafting in the third round, but it will be worth watching to see how the snaps are divvied up this week, after Kraft had 13 and Sims 9 a week ago.

Great article, Mark. I really hope our defense is up to the task of stopping the Atlanta running attack. Also, I wonder if D Bakhtari is playing this game (artificial grass) and if the O line can keep J Love as clean this week as they did last week in Chicago.

I'm hoping they let Bakh not play on artificial turf, continue catering to his preferred practice schedule, and convert that into a hometown discount for the consideration he doesn't know he could get elsewhere.

We only have 5 games on artificial turf this season, could get a real look at depth behind Bakh and that's essential info to have before any plans are made.

DBakh is out, as is AJones and as expected CW.
Probably unfair to change my pick now, so Pack 30-27.
Had I known for sure about DB, AJ & CW I'd say change of strategy and lower score:
Pack 23 - 20.

Sims was clearly the TE they trusted to block. He’s also a pretty good catcher—showed more consistently in the passing game in the Vikings than Kraft did. I could see him easily pass Kraft for snaps as he gets more comfortable in our system, though I think Kraft will eventually surpass him. He’s a little smaller than Kraft, he has a significantly better vertical, similar speed, but he’s not nearly as agile.

Against this D, if he’s ready in terms of system/calls, I think Sims could be busy. We are going to need his blocking. They are going to try to blitz and confuse Love. He will need the outlet/blocking player conceivably. Sims would seem the logical candidate, with the option to run a route from a similar formation too.

Could see some snaps with 3 TEs? Give both Kraft and Sims a chance to block, see what happens ...

We obviously have to stay vigilant against run for the entire game, but not at the expense of playing lax pass coverage like we did last season against the Titans. So hopefully Barry will remember this lesson and be prepared for any surprises the Falcons may have in store with their offensive game plan.

Doubs, Reed and Musgrave may have to be enough on offense. I would love to see another RB not named Jones to step up also. Hopefully our defense continues to take a + step this Sunday. May be a little tougher W this week. If the energy stays up, we should be able to get this done. Stopping the run will be a big test for the Defense. GPG

Funny... I have no worries at all about this game. I hear what everyone is saying and I'm not looking past the Falcons, I just don't have any inkling of a bad feeling. I kinda feel like we might lay a beat down on those guys.

The weird thing about last week is that there really wasn't a wide receiver hierarchy. All five of them got plenty of snaps. This week will be different. Watson appears to have a decent chance of playing, and even if he doesn't, Doubs will probably not be on a limited snap count again. So there will be fewer snaps for Toure, Heath, and Wicks. Those three still need to sort themselves out. Maybe the plan is for them to be treated as equals, with their playing time determined by when their specific skills are needed.

If Watson plays, one of the three will probably be inactive for the game. I expect that to be Wicks.

Hierarchy is past tense since JL10 is not afraid to throw to the open man.

The Falcons were tied after three quarters. If it wasn't for the turnovers, Carolina might have won. My point is, the Packers will have their opportunities. Both running and passing. Love needs to avoid forced errors and the defense needs to step up the run defense and agrressiveness. Just like last week, the Packers need to play a complete game in all three phases. They will have a chance to win a second game.

This game will have to be won in the trenches. Love needs to be kept clean and AJ Dillon needs to get going. I know many are down on Dillon but I still think he is being used incorrectly and when he is in, we seem to get blown up up front for some reason. He is a back that needs several carries and can wear down a defense. No Jones, likely no Watson. I think the Packers are better up front on both sides. Make Ridder beat you and we should win this game.

Agreed about #28. I don't know if this problem can be corrected with Myers at C, but I hope they're at least trying something.

I expect to see more of the same from Dillon. At this point in his career, he is what he is.

I would hope they have Emanuel Wilson on the 53 if Jones is a no go.

Yeah, I’m looking forward to seeing him in games that count. I hope he’s every bit as good as he was in pre-season.

He is on the 53, my guess he is active tomorrow. If not active for this game, then when?

MLF did say he's the next man up. While I hope #33 is fine, it'd be too risky to push him hard. We need him 100% late in the season.

So.. what does the narrative on the Packers look like if they go to Atlanta and put together a convincing win without their #1 WR, #1 RB, and without a starting ILB?

I know Atlanta is a team with plenty of questions themselves, but I have to think if Green Bay handles their business, there's going to be some talk around the league.

Umm.. okay.. Quay Walker in...

but Bakhtiari is OUT.

Same question applies.. if the Packers convincingly win with #1 WR, #1 RB, #1 LT out... what is the national narrative on the Packers?

MLF needs to get Dillon plays that fits his style of play. Up close & quick opening runs. Nothing deep in shotgun. GPG!!!

Stop Atlanta's running backs, make Ridder pass

I want to see the Packers cut LVN loose with some power rushes to put Ridder on his arse!

Without Watson and Jones? That’s not good. I could see this go either way. Wilson only had one big run in the preseason. Dillon needs better run blocking from the line to get going. Taylor is serviceable at best. Doubs is a #2-3 WR and the tight ends are raw rookies. Atlanta has a legitimate run game and that has, historically, been our big weakness.

Colorado…Coach Prime…..had 25 runs for 70 yards and 40+ points. Congratulations to Colorado State on stuffing the run.

Honestly, is there ever a game when anyone feels we have an obvious coaching advantage ( except against the bad news Bears)?
Even the special teams is getting infected now.
The Packers look like they have some decent players, but this staff will never get them anywhere.
Up by 12 with 14 minutes left and a third and long … and that was it.
It’s very tough to watch a MLF/ Joe Barry team constantly get out played, out coached and always, always have less energy than the opponent.
Games like this is how you miss the playoffs.. and in a weak NFC that shouldn’t happen.
