5 Players the Packers should consider signing to closeout 2023 right now

These young players should allow Green Bay to finish out the season plus give them some options going forward

It's safe to say the Packers are a little banged up on offense going into Week 13. They've mostly had the roster to weather the storm so far, but have been especially short-handed at the running back and tight end positions for several weeks; with a few in-game hiccups along the offensive line. I shudder to think what would happen should misfortune befall either A.J. Dillon or Tucker Kraft going forward. The Packers have been trying to be proactive though, bringing in several players for workouts to coincide with the recent usual shuffle of Patrick Taylor and James Robinson (Is the guy gonna play or what?). But so far, their efforts haven't borne any fruit. So I took it upon myself to put my GM hat on and see what I could find in the professional football player section at Ross.

(I had to get there SUPER early I might add, and I may have gotten into a brief fisticuffs with John Schneider and Brandon Beane, but once we spotted Nick Caserio casually sifting through the pile we quickly resolved our differences.)

Once the dust settled, I found 5 REALLY good deals out there that I believe General Manager Brian Gutekunst would be hard-pressed to say that he wasn't even at least a little intrigued by. I stuck with the youth movement the Packers are currently undergoing, so no players drafted before 2021 (sorry Zach Ertz and Shaq Leonard).

#1 Zack Kuntz - TE

(This one's for you, Jonathan Krim)

Since athletic testing became prevalent, only 10, that's right, TEN tight ends have ever scored a perfect 10.0 RAS. Zack Kuntz is one of two qualifying tight ends to do it in the last TWENTY years. Kuntz, a transfer from Penn State was on his way to setting the college football world on fire before succumbing to injury late in his college career at Old Dominion. He proved he was completely recovered by blowing the Combine out of the water and performing well in drills. The 6 foot 7 Kuntz was selected 220th Overall in 2023 and is currently wasting away on the Jets practice squad. He may not have the game experience or production that Luke Musgrave had during his days at Oregon State, but he's undoubtedly a bigger and faster version of him; and unlike Musgrave, he has no problem getting through contact. Do you think he might break out with better quarterback and offensive line play? I certainly do.

#2 Joey Fisher - G

Joey Fisher was destined for the NFL coming out of high school as an all-state defensive end. Unfortunately, due to instability at Maryland, he transferred to FCS stalwart Towson but was out of football due to the pandemic until he was rediscovered by D-II heavyweight Shepherd. Fisher would go on to earn all-conference honors for his junior and senior seasons, earning him a Senior Bowl invite. Unfortunately, disaster struck again with Fisher breaking a bone in his hand during individual drills. That didn't stop Fisher from testing extremely well, lifting 225 40 times, most in this year's class. Fisher's claim to fame is he is a very technically sound offensive lineman with the strength to boot, it's just a question of if he's up to the task of handling NFL defenders. But when you look at the tape, the strength and athleticism jump out to you. To give you an idea of how athletic Fisher is his RAS as an interior offensive lineman is 9.66 (Elgton Jenkins is 9.33), as a defensive tackle at 9.40 (Devonte' Wyatt and Colby Wooden are 9.59 and 9.25 respectively), and 8.91 as an offensive tackle (Yosh Nijman and Zach Tom are 9.80 and 9.59). Joey Fisher was immediately signed after the draft to the 49ers before finding his way to the Steelers shortly after the preseason, he was cut 2 weeks ago from their practice squad and is a free agent.

#3 Xazavian Valladay - RB

If the name sounds familiar, you'll remember my glowing review of Xazavian Valladay here. Unfortunately, things haven't panned out for him so far; went undrafted and has floated between the Steelers, Texans, and now finds himself stashed on the Jets practice squad. The decisive, all-purpose back seems to have a bit of a coveted following around the league but is still waiting for his chance to break out. What stands out to me the most right now with Valladay is he has some major experience in pass protection, something that you don't see a lot of from lesser-known backs. He is a perfect candidate for an outside zone scheme and offers an "Aaron Jones"-esque skillset to the running back room, albeit he's less explosive and creative. If you remember my analysis of why the Packers had to keep Emmanuel Wilson, this is the same reason why Valladay will force the Packers to cough up a roster spot to get him, he's simply too good to be on the street, and while his rookie year may have played out less than desirable, I expect to hear his name in the news sooner rather than later come 2024.

#4 Ronnie Brown - RB

How does a guy go for over 2,400 yards from scrimmage and 24 touchdowns? Well, it helps if you have the aforementioned Joey Fisher blocking for you, but Shepherd's Ronnie Brown was just a beast at the Division II level. Brown has a slight frame but loves to run between the tackles and he's a tough guy to get down as well. He offers versatility because he can line up in the backfield, out wide in the slot, and will even field kickoffs and punts. Despite a Collegiate Bowl invite Brown failed to secure a selection in the '23 Draft and wound up a UDFA pickup for the Buccaneers. Unfortunately, that was short-lived and he now awaits a new home. I don't think Brown has the appeal of the guy ahead of him in Valladay, but his marketability is the multitude of services he offers an interested team. I think if he takes the time to get slightly stronger he could even be more effective than he was this past preseason in the pros.

#5 Lucas Krull - TE

Tight end Lucas Krull presents the fantastic question of "what if?" for an interested team. Krull is built like a traditional "Y" tight end, but he moves like an H-back. But "what if" he could learn to eventually do both at a high level? Krull set out to play football for the Florida Gators but was forced to be a benchwarmer by some dude named Kyle Pitts...(not sure if you've heard of him) and transferred to Pittsburgh two years later. There he finally got on the field and earned 2nd-Team All-ACC. Krull needs some work, primarily with his blocking (which is nothing new for young TEs out of college), and could also benefit from refining his route-running ability and diagnosing the defense in front of him. But oh man, "what if" you get him the ball in the open field? Krull is a problem for defenders, especially if you're anything smaller than a linebacker. Krull went undrafted in 2022, but was immediately signed by the Saints, but now has bounced over to the Broncos practice squad. He's probably a year or two away from making a major contribution to a team, but again..."what if?"

I'll keep my ear to the streets on personnel developments as usual, let's see if Gutekunst has any more in-season magic left in him.

Way to dig Joe! A bunch of guys I’ve never heard about but I love reading about really athletic dudes that aren’t on the field….yet👍🏼

2 guys on the Jets PS?

Those first two sound especially good. 40 reps bench press? We don't have anybody that strong. Is that the LT people talk about drafting? You mention him on both sides of the ball.

The TE seems better than bringing Austin Allen back.

I mentioned Fisher's RAS as a defensive lineman to give a better visual to his athleticism as they are generally more athletic than offensive linemen. So to see that Fisher would rank in the Top 3 for the team is noteworthy.

Very nice bio capsules, Joseph.
I was interested in Kuntz at draft time (due to the 10 RAS, of course). I'm also looking forward to the chance of drafting TE Cade Stover (maybe the second pick in round 3 ?) mainly for his blocking prowess. Musgrave/Kraft/Kuntz/Stover would make an awesome foursome.

Love the idea of a guard who has just had bad luck to this point - you can get real gems this way, if you are lucky. Let's go fishing for Fisher.

Also love the idea of a RB even more. Not only do the Packers need one, this years draft is probably weaker at RB than any other position, so this position could best filled outside of the draft.

Now if only we could find the next Adrian Amos, to pick up and add to the Safety position...........

Several things I agree with, Turo:

I was a big fan of drafting Kuntz last year; I picked him in many of my mock drafts.

I also see 24 as a really poor RB crop (following two very good ones); I'm a little surprised Gute didn't pick one in last year's draft.

As far as the guard, I love a guard who has a great bench, but obviously there are other qualities that can make playing OL in the NFL a non-starter: the ability to effectively learn and operate in an NFL offense, the feet and athleticism to do what NFL guards do, and the leg strength or technique to withstand an NFL DL's power rush. If he is "poor" at any of those three, he's not worth a roster spot.

Every team is banged up right now.
Joe makes it sound like we need to go All In.
And thats what got us to the rebuild now.
We need progress!
Players were drafted for special reasons.
And DEVELOPMENT!

I'm saying don't screw with Love now.
Keep him working with the current roster, as long as you can.
I'd trust Newman more than a guy just signed.
If you hurry and try to sign a rb.
Love will throw the ball less.
Give the guys that didn't tank, a place to call home.

Signing a RB or TE who's going to be 3rd on the depth chart isn't going to screw with Love.

But if Love has nobody to throw to or hand the ball off due to injuries that will ABSOLUTELY screw with Love.

Remember we are one A.J. Dillon injury from being REALLY in trouble...and if Tucker Kraft goes down we're stuck with Josiah Deguara and some guy named Joel Wilson.

Right now Patrick Taylor and James Robinson are listed behind Dillion.
And Henry Pearson was just activated.

The Tes Depth show Kraft ,Deguara and Ben Sims.
Go with that and let the growing pains still play out.

I'd expect a 4 Wr formation, and if needed, a extra LT to block instead.

No need to bring in anyone until someone's season is finished.

This season is about Rebuilding. If were stuck were stuck.
Versatility is what the packers have always drafted.

I'm sticking to my guns that the Packers need someone else in the backfield, Patrick Taylor can't shoulder an entire game as the lead back and for some reason, Robinson can't see the field.

Didn't mean to omit Sims, as he's likely the starter over Deguara but we both know Deguara is more of a FB than a TE so we'd truly have just 1 functional TE if Musgrave and Kraft were both unavailable.

Need? I wouldn't go that far but again, gives the Packers some options.

Nice list Joseph! You auditioning for an interview with Gutey to join his Personnel Team? Found some gems that Gutey most assuredly knows about...but out of sight, out of mind.

The two most pressing for the rest of the season are TE and RB. My choices would be to sign the two Jets PS players...Kuntz and Valladay and cut TE Sims and RB Robinson off the 53 to make room. (both would likely be available for PS).

Kuntz is a phenom athlete and can catch the ball and help stretch defenses attacking the middle where Love is having great success right now. Blocking needs work. Valladay has a lot of college production as a 6 year college RB, is very decisive at the handoff and like AJ and AJD, a solid receiver. Blocking also needs work.

And both could be elevated during the Jets lost season and maybe help them win another game or two...don't let that happen as the Jets 2024 2nd rounder belongs to the Pack...and it could be #34 or #35....or a late second round.

Not for me Joe.
I'm against any Offense.
1. TE should be drafted.
And while most must be thinking OT.
You just made the best argument for Brock Bowers.
(Considered a Generation talent)
2. TT paid Defense and dumped overpriced Guards.
While Turner was signed. The Draft is the best fix vs cap.
3. The Rbs might be the best signing. I'd wait.
I still think that the draft picks have more upside.

Let's give are draft guys A chance.

As the season wears down--especially if the playoffs start to slip away--there's nothing wrong with using the bottom couple roster spots to get some guys off other teams' PS that you want to keep around when rosters go back up to 90.

Remember Jimmy Graham?
How about Richard Rodgers?
And then there was Jace Sterberger.
The biggest reason was Speed.
Next is assignment/Game ready.

There is a reason for their availability.
And you can't have fumbles.
As for a Guard.
Obviously somebody hasn't given up on Newman.

After Sundays game against the Chiefs, the Packers have(likely) 5 games left. The Packers have some, but not a lot, of money left under the cap. If Kraft got hurt I could see them taking a shot at a tight end(Ertz) but my take is they're going to stand pat through the season. The goal is to improve and get the salary cap in line. Yes, there are fantasies about the playoffs, but..really?

Here's a question: if the players on the Jets practice squad were any good, why aren't they playing? They clearly need the help. We already have one active practice squad running back, what is gained?

The TE might be better than Musgrave. Kraft might develop to be better than Musgrave. I don't see the downside to this pickup. The lineman seems good from this write-up; 40 reps on bench press is not merely impressive but functional. Too bad he's not a C but still.

These are signings to get the Packers to the end of the season, and who knows...maybe even through the postseason. The plus of Kuntz and Valladay is that they are playing in an offense that is going to be similar to the Packers under Hackett, so there's much less of a learning curve there.

The other point is these guys are all young, rookies or 2-year players, they have traits that teams other than the Packers love. It's really about opportunity in my opinion. The Jets have the issue of a roster that was heavily influenced by Aaron Rodgers and if it wasn't for that influence maybe those guys might be on the active roster. It wouldn't surprise me if these guys were pillaged as soon as the Jets were officially eliminated from playoff contention to be futures contracts elsewhere.

This is kind of a sandbox “freaks” list post draft. I’m not averse to adding some upside PS depth, but less keen on the roster positions required to poach from a PS being devoted to players who aren’t close to helping.

That said, if there’s a rational basis for believing that they improve our talent or options , it could be worth it, but I’d there really here? All of these guys are really projects. They are guys passed over by multiple teams in the draft and, in some cases, since. Why? In most cases there are reasons.

Furthermore, if we are going to look at these types it has to be in the context of do we need what they would be if their upside is actually realized? Kuntz is good example. He’s a very athletic TE, not particularly big (250 ish) despite being tall. He wasn’t a good blocker and wasn’t often asked to be. In fact he was disappointing in contested situations as well, despite his height and strength. He also doesn’t show much burst on the field. Krull is another very similar type who again is not a good blocker in line but also has much more questionable hands.

We just drafted 2 similar types, both almost as athletic and with more on field production. We then signed Sims, who really is also in that mold. We don’t need another. I’d far rather we found a space for a true blocker who can contribute as an outlet in that pass game.

As to the RBs. Nothing bad but nothing that screams improvement now (or even a likelihood if getting on the field due to protection uncertainty). As to upside, are they really that interesting that we need them now, that we can’t do better next year? Maybe. I wouldn’t object as a PS pick up, but if so why is such talent shaking free at a position that often can start as a rookie for many teams?

Fischer is interesting. He’s a little undersized (sub 300) and would profile as a T were it not for short arms. He’s a guy who lacks power if not attitude: a lighter, shorter armed Tom without the elite technique. He could be a prospect if he can add mass, he’s not going to have the power advantage that he had in DII. He’s already 25 and looks to be physically maxed out. As a UDFA, he’s probably a decent investment to see if he can contribute, but his ceiling is probably as a rotational piece. Not one to devote a roster spot to acquire

These are the kind of players that one looks at on a PS if they slip free or, even more appropriately, sign to a futures contract based on upside or overcoming past health issues. I will freely admit, I liked Kunst as a late round upside grab, but we took Kraft after Musgrave. After that, it seemed excessive to pick a 3rd of the same type.

I love that you did your homework.

These are just guys to fill out the roster. Gute is always churning the roster...I'm surprised he keeps doubling back to Robinson and yet we haven't seen him on the field at all (probably has more to do with LaFleur than anything). He snatched up Taylor because he was a known commodity. I was going to highlight Tyler Goodson here too but as I was writing the Colts promoted him to the 53. I needed to find 2 RBs because so far Gute has "failed" to find anyone else.

Kuntz and Krull are in the same mold as Musgrave, and who knows maybe that's the archetype that the offense is moving toward, I'm not against it. Will Tyler Davis get another run next year? Probably, at least just to start, but I could see Gute addressing the position again in 2024, albeit with a late-rounder or UDFA signing. Kuntz and Krull could be had right now. It'd be interesting to see where they both end up after the regular season draws to a close, I'm certain they'll both have suitors.

Someone else mentioned it but you know what might work for Fisher in the NFL? Center. I don't have any documented experience for him there but like you said he's a little light, but if the 40 rep power does ever materialize he could find a home there. He has zero issues getting to the second level.

We've seen time and time again that sometimes all a guy needs is the right opportunity. Maybe it's Green Bay, maybe it isn't. I know my article has some urgency to it, but sometimes GMs have to throw something against the wall and see if it sticks. If we kick the tires and it doesn't pan out I'm ok with that. But there's nothing more satisfying than writing about a player and seeing them make it in the league, even if it's not for the Packers.

Wow, I can't believe the Debbie Downers in this article. Great job Joseph!! Alot of people thought we would really fall off a cliff this year, but SURPRISE SURPRISE, the "Young Guns" are kicking ass and taking names, and we are in the playoff race. Thats way more than all the "Experts" expected out of Green Bay this year. We are sitting at .500 this late in the year with FIVE easily winnable games left on our schedule.

Last years TE class was the strongest in 20 years. We scored 2 really good TEs in the 2022 draft and I am thrilled with their potential. Zack Kuntz was definitely in the groups of pairs I was hoping for GB to draft since our TE room was empty. I and alot of people wanted Kuntz over Musgrave because of injuries. The Jets have a strong TE room and thats why Kuntz is on the PS. It's a no brainer to swipe him from the Jets and add him to our Young Stud group. Kuntz is a tremendous athlete and was a 4/5 star recruit @ Penn State who never got a chance with them so he transferred and put up big numbers. The 10 RAS is also no joke, he is even faster than Musgrave. He is a same size but better all around TE as Austin Allen and he is free, he doesn't cost a draft pick. If we had missed on Luke or Tucker, Kuntz was also top 8 in the draft class. Joseph hit a home run idea here.

I honestly don't know much about the other guys, but who knew anything about Aaron Jones when we drafted him. I had to look him up to find out about him. We keep cutting James Robinson so he can't be that impressive to the Packers. We know we need 3 backs for sure. Any of these players would be cheap backups that cost us almost nothing, not much cash and no picks.

Musgrave could be done for the year. I love Kraft and Sims is a sleeper/keeper. Plus stealing Kuntz from the Jets is almost like we got more in the Rodgers trade. I had hoped we could land one of their TEs in the trade and was dissapointed when we got nothing extra in young players at positions of need. No reason to stand pat with players if we can strengthen the roster. Keep it up Joseph.
