Pre-Order The Pro Football Draft Preview Today!!

2016 Packers 7-Round Mock Draft

Here is my final mock draft for what I think the Packers should/could do in 2016. I'll be lucky if I get any of these guys right but it's a lot of fun trying to predict which way Ted Thompson might draft. Some of the projections might be wishful thinking but for the most part I stayed true to where I, and a few national media members rank these player. As you’ll see it’s a pretty defensive heavy draft. I look forward to the feedback!

1. Vernon Butler, DL, Louisiana Tech- There are so many different ways the Packers could choose to go. Russ Uglem’s Monday Mock Draft Roundup articles certainly show that draft analysts have different opinions of guys who could fit well with the Packers at pick 27.  I’m going to go with Vernon Butler for my final Packers 7-round mock. Butler is an absolute mountain of a man, he’s 6’4” 323lbs, has incredibly long arms at 35 1/8” and huge bear paws at 10 ¾”. Butler has the versatility to play the 5 tech in the base defense, can also line up and be effective as the nose tackle, and has the quickness to contribute as a pass rusher in the nickel. Butler plays with good effort and does a nice job using his length to disengage from blockers to make plays in his gaps. He’s also strong enough to hold his ground vs double teams to allow the linebackers behind him to make the play. He’s a bit raw as a pass rusher but he has the burst to penetrate past offensive lineman and also displays a powerful bull rush. Butler would come in and more than likely earn a role as a starter, but if not starting, he’d definitely be a part of the rotation. The Packers desperately need an influx of talent on the d-line as well as quality depth.

2. Shilique Calhoun, Edge, Michigan St. - Julius Peppers, Nick Perry, and Jayrone Elliot are all going to be free agents at the end of this year, that is a lot of pass rushing that could not be on the roster in 2017. With their 2nd round pick I have the Packers selecting edge rusher Shilique Calhoun from Michigan St. It may be a bit of a stretch to think Calhoun could drop to the bottom of the 2nd round, but it’s not impossible. Calhoun is built really well to be an outside linebacker in the Packers 3-4 defense; he’s 6’4” 251lbs, has over 34” long arms and almost 10” hands. Calhoun also tested really well at the combine posting a 6.97 3-cone drill, a 4.25 short shuttle, and a 35” vertical jump. Calhoun was extremely productive during his time at Michigan St. with 41 tackles for loss and 26 sacks in the 3 seasons he was a starter. He would immediately be a part of the pass rushing rotation at outside linebacker and could slowly learn Dom Capers defense before being thrust into the starting lineup. He would be great value at the end of the 2nd round.

3. Hassan Ridgeway, DL, Texas- The Packers need to double dip at the defensive line position. They currently only have 4 guys who have seen significant playing time at the position and need players to really push each other to make each other better. Ridgeway is an interesting prospect who has all the talent in the world, he just hasn’t put it all together yet. The 6’3” 303lb defensive lineman battled some injuries this past season but when he’s healthy you see a player who doesn’t give up any ground to double teams and has the power to overwhelm single blockers. Ridgeway does a great job using his hands and upper body strength to discard blockers and make plays. He understands how to set the edge vs the run and has lined up at several different spots on the defensive line. Ridgeway would come in and be an asset to the defensive line right away vs the run as well as the pass.

4a. Joe Haeg, OT, North Dakota St. - More depth on the offensive line will be important for the Packers with so many pending free agents. Haeg has started 60 of 61 games at both right tackle and left tackle for the Bison and has great size for the position at 6’6” 304lbs and 33 ¾” long arms. Haeg does a nice job steering and keeping pass rushers to the outside but can get caught leaning a bit. He is a functional run blocker who has quick enough feet to shield defenders away but doesn’t always drive or sustain blocks as well as he should. The Packers don’t really have a competent swing back up tackle on the roster unless Mike McCarthy has learned to trust JC Tretter, but Haeg would be a welcome addition.

4b. Connor McGovern, OL, Missouri- McGovern is a typical Ted Thompson selection on the offensive line, a college tackle with experience at guard who offers the team versatility. It’s been well documented now but Josh Sitton, TJ Lang, David Bakhtiari, and JC Tretter will all be free agents at the end of this year, while it’s likely they re-sign a few of them it’s unlikely they can bring everyone back. The Packers need to develop a few guys to take over some spots on the offensive line and McGovern has a lot of the physical tools the Packers like. He’s 6’4” 306lbs and is a weight room warrior. He put up 33 reps of 225lbs on the bench press but also broke the school record doing six squats of 690lbs. At this stage he is already a very good run blocker, he gets to the 2nd level with ease and packs a punch with his hands. His pass protection is still a bit of a work in progress but it’s understandable seeing as how he has moved around the line so much. McGovern could be groomed for an eventual take over at guard.

4c. BJ Goodson, LB, Clemson- Many Packer fans won’t be happy waiting until the 4th round again to address the inside linebacker spot but it’s not where you draft the player but the player himself. Goodson carried the “thumper” tag with him throughout his time at Clemson but the film tells a story of a more well-rounded linebacker. At 6’1” 242lbs Goodson has ideal size to play inside, pair that along with over 33” long arms and 10” hands and he is an intimidating force in the middle of the defense. Goodson turned some heads at the combine posting some of the best numbers of any linebacker. He ran a 4.69 40-yard dash, put up 30 reps of 225lbs on the bench press, vertical jumped 34.5” and had a 7.05 3-cone drill. Goodson became the leader of the defense his senior season and racked up 108 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and had two interceptions. Goodson excels in the box, taking on blockers and shedding them to stuff running plays. He doesn’t hesitate to fill his gap and is a very sound tackler. Goodson does have some work to do in coverage but he has the athletic tools to be developed.

5. Kevin Byard, S, Middle Tennessee- While the Packers have their starting safeties in place, both Micah Hyde and Chris Banjo will be free agents at the end of this year so finding a backup with special teams abilities would be a wise move. Byard comes out of Middle Tennessee as one of the most decorated prospects in this year’s class.  As a four year starter he’s racked up 312 tackles and has 19 career interceptions including 4 of which he returned for touchdowns. The 5’11” 216lb safety dominated his pro day by running a 4.44 40-yard dash, a 6.73 3-cone, a 4.15 short shuttle, vertical jumped 38” and bench pressed 225lbs 22 times. All of those numbers would have him had him in the top 3 at the combine among safeties. Byard does a great job playing the deep middle of the field, he took the leadership role on of making sure everyone was aligned properly on the defense. Byard has the speed and reaction skills to run from sideline to sideline and his ball skills are excellent. He does need to work on his physicality. While he makes a lot of tackles he tends to go really low which isn’t great technique.

6. Travis Feeney, LB/Edge, Washington- The Packers depth at inside linebacker leaves a lot to be desired. Joe Thomas is an average 3rd down nickel specialist and Carl Bradford hasn’t been able to get on the field. Sam Barrington is coming off of an injury and Jake Ryan will just be entering his second season, the Packers need bodies. Travis Feeney is a 6’4” 230lb athlete who has experience rushing the passer as well as playing in space. Feeney showed off his explosiveness at the combine running a 4.5 40-yard dash and vertical jumping 40”. Feeney registered 56 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, and 8 sacks this past season playing mostly out of a 2-point stance rushing the passer. I envision Feeney being able to contribute both on the outside as well as inside in the Packers defense. He is a good enough athlete to cover tight ends and drop into zone effectively and he also has some savvy as a pass rusher. Feeney is also a very good special teams contributor and was the team captain in 2015.

7. Tom Hackett, P, Utah- The Aussie is the two time Ray Guy Award winner and is arguably the best punter to come out of college.  Hackett specializes in pinning teams inside the 20 yard line, he dropped 28 of his 61 kicks last year inside the 20. His junior year he landed 36 punts inside the 20 including 19 of which inside the 10. He averaged almost 48 yards a kick last season and is able to kick both traditionally and rugby style. Landing Hackett in the 7th would be a steal, Tim Masthay needs competition this year.

Priority Undrafted Free Agent Targets:

*Darion Griswold, TE, Arkansas St.

*Cody Core, WR, Ole Miss

*Aaron Green, RB, TCU

*Lars Hanson, OT, Sacramento St.

*Elandon Roberts, LB, Houston

*Mike Jordan, CB, Missouri Western St.

*Destiny Vaeao, DL, Washington St.

*Victor Ochi, Edge, Stony Brook

4a, Jaylon Smith. Move the tackles down to b & c.

5, Jatavis Brown. Much better than the safety listed and more flexible in the Packer defense.

Otherwise mock seems solid:)

Yeah, I don't see how you don't take Jaylon Smith in r4 if he's still on the board. He might never be his old self, but if he is, he's gold. Well worth the risk at that point...or maybe even at the bottom of r3.

Gotta go off the doctor's report(s). If he's picked high (by the end of round 3) then that team's doctor is confident he'll be close to his old self by next year. If he makes it to the bottom of the 4th then it might not be likely he returns close to his previous caliber of play.

I'm pretty sure most teams are thinking by the 4th round it would be worth taking a flyer on Smith.

On Mike & Mike this morning, Kiper has Smith going in r5-r7?! SMH. TT better get this kid well before then! This guy was a top 5 overall pick and a generational player that is never available to the Packers where they draft in r1. A gamble? Perhaps but one well worth the risk in the 4th IMO.

I would take him with a 4th round pick.
Especially one of the compensation picks. If you view them as a bonus pick then why not use them as a bonus for a player that was thought of a top 10 pick before the injury.

Although the recent medical checks on his progress/ prognosis aren't the best, I'd take him in the second rd even. My guess is he'll be long gone by the 3rd.

I think you're probably right, that he doesn't last to round 3 or 4. Someone will take that leap.

I think the Packers need to balance that long-term benefit on Smith against a shorter-term return on drafting someone else in rd 1-2 (and even r3). I've been a supporter of Smith up 'til now and have said in the past that r2 is a real possibility for a team like the Packers that tends to play the long game.

Saying that, and pulling the trigger are--I'm guessing--two wholly different things.

I can completely see the Packers going 2 DL, 2 LB, 2 OL with the first 6 picks. It really is where the strength of the draft is and where they will likely find the best players available.

If they came away with Darion Griswold, Aaron Green and Victor Ochi as UDFA's I think that would be a huge haul.
I think they need to add depth at RB and TE in the draft or after. I really like Green as a RB. I think he is underrated and could come in and be a 3rd down back right away. Griswold I think has good upside as does Ochi.

I look at Calhoun (and have seen him play a lot, being in this area) and he just doesn't look like a stand-up OLB to me. Maybe an elephant, but I think he's really a 4-3 DE.

What I like about him: He has a lot of tools when it comes to rushing the pass. I've seen him do pretty much everything and beat would-be blockers.

What I don't like about him: He doesn't use those tools enough. I'd hate to have him in on running plays. Once he is blocked -- he is done for that play.

2 OL in the 4th seems like overkill. Yes, I know the free agents in 2017. But for this season they already have 6 spots locked in, and they just re-signed Taylor to a 2-year deal.

The Packers generally only keep 8 OL on the 53.

So technically they have 7 spots locked in right? With Tretter and Taylor.

Yeah, I agree it probably would be overkill. And they did resign Barclay and were high on Josh Walker.

I bet they come away with 1, but i wouldn't be surprised if they came away with 2.

I think 6 absolute locks with 1 solid lock (Taylor).

I could see grabbing some depth in the 6th round or so and stash him on the PS for the season, but 4th rounders I want to make the 53 and contribute.

They always have positions where they flex roster spots, whether it's keeping an extra WR or TE or FB. I wouldn't be surprised if they flex a roster spot for the OL given the uncertain nature of four of those top 6 going into 2017.

Entirely possible - and they will have an extra roster space to play with now that they will/should only have 1 FB.

Oh, and likely only 2 QBs - so that's 2 extra roster spaces from 2015.

IMO, I think both Tretter and Taylor are locks now. With Taylors new contract I don't see him going anywhere. I would say 7 locks. Drafting 1 to make 8. Possibly they keep 9 this year? With 4 OL set to be Free agents next year they may want to stock up on the OL. Seems like a lot to keep 9 but they are gaining 1-2 spots on the 53, taking away Tolzien and Kuhn. So 9 spots could be a possibility.

Thompson has been great at finding OL in the 4th round. With 3- 4th round picks this year I would be willing to bet he drafts at least 1 OL in the 4th round.

I agree though. 2 OL would probably be overkill, especially when they could find a player at another position that could play right away. I would rather draft a RB, TE, CB/S then to take a 2nd OL.

Some one needs to explain this Free agent thing to me because the way I see it our two guards currently cost X against the Cap. They are both on their second contracts and might get a 1 to 2 mil dollar raise per year making them cost at most 4 mil more against the cap per year after signing new contracts. With the Cap going up every year it will be no issue signing them, its Bakhtiari that will be harder to sign since he is still on a rookie contract and Tretter is a backup. Sooooo where is the issue? It's just one mediocre LT that we need to worry about.

I agree with your point about Money for Sitton and Lang. The issue is their age and injury history. I am not that concerned, assuming that TT can address that by structuring their contracts and guaranteed money.

Bakh will get a hefty raise, an increase of probably $6M/year, as you allude. But Tretter will not be cheap. I think he has shown that he can be a starting center, and pinch in a LT. He should garner low starters money, probably an increase of $4M. He might actually prefer to find a team where he can play.

I don't think so. Especially if one those DL gems is still around. Maybe even a pass rusher -- depending on who we take in the 1st (if we don't trade back).

People here like to think how invaluable the ILB position is, but how about the TE position?

I seriously don't see Henry going in the first... He is just not dynamic enough of a TE for first round. Did you watch his work out at the Combine? If he does go in the first it's just because of the lack of TE depth in this draft.

TT has put together a team of solid players even though he's been drafting on avg. in the bottom 20% of each round the last half dozen years making it harder and harder to find difference makers. Players win games, playmakers win championships. There's been a slow erosion of playmakers on this team.

My Q to the faithful...which of these potential picks are playmakers?

'There's been a slow erosion of playmakers on this team.'

I sort of agree but also disagree.

The players I view as playmakers are guys who the other team has to game plan for. On the Packers team, the playmakers on offense are Rodgers, Lacy, Nelson, Cobb, and Cook might be one. On defense the playmakers are Daniels, Mathews, Peppers, Shields and I say Clinton-Dix is one now.

Then add in the young players that have the potential to be playmakers, Janis, Abbrederis, Montgomery, Adams all have potential on offense. Randall, Rollins, and I think Jayrone Elliott has the potential to be playmakers on defense.

Its my view on it.

Playmakers missing from SB45 season: Woodson, Williams, Collins, Raji, Jennings, Driver, Finley, and Clifton. May be missing others. I also wonder if wear and tear will diminish Sittons playmaker status.
There's always potential playmakers. For the discussion I'm focusing on actual playmakers.

Two others TT should draft:

The punter...oh my!

Since playmakers are expected in rounds 1 and 2, no!
Butler needs to much development for my cause.
Calhoun isn’t a 3-4 OLB IMO 4-3DE all day

Goodson like Ragland spent his time behind an above to great DL, and I’m not falling for it.
Feeney in the 6th with the combine numbers he put up, certainly without a doubt.
Hackett can kick the ball with natural ease, now put him in front of 80,000 in Lambeau in Dec, i hate drafting K/P.

Will check back on the rest.

Vernon Butler is a bust of mega proportions in terms of a round 1 selection. There is a ton of work left to get this guy right. His pad level is atrocious! His first move is consistently up, and will get worked by NFL caliper guards.

"He’s also strong enough to hold his ground vs double teams"
He saw four double teams against Mississippi State and didn't even try to hold his ground. He got worked!

"does a nice job using his length to disengage from blockers"
Bull; using his length, he latches on and never lets go.

"He’s a bit raw as a pass rusher"
See above. He has one move, latch on and push!

"but if not starting, he’d definitely be a part of the rotation"
This is found in a write up for a round 1 prospect? We are referencing the Packers DL front here.

Step out of the round 1 and hedge your bets on a deep class of big men...

i like your picks a lot! i think there may be a better DL option at 3. also, i am afraid Haeg (and McGovern?) will be gone by Rd. 4, 125. so, how about moving Haeg to Rd. 3 and replacing McGovern with best available DL at Rd. 4, pick #125? Replace second Rd. 4 choice with a CB. move your other picks up one place (Byard at end of Rd 4, Feeney at end of Rd. 5, Hackett, if available, at end of 6) add, let's say, Elandon Roberts in 7. TE/RB competition in free agency. love it, love it!!

Amazingly, there actually have been THREE punters drafted in the first round. If I got all of the information right, they are...

>>>Steve Little (15h to STL, 1978) who was "meh" for a few years, then got into a car accident which crippled him,

>>>Russell Erxleben who might be one of the worst draft picks ever (11th in 1979) - he was perfectly pedestrian for 6 years and is currently incarcerated for securities fraud

>>> and some dude named Ray Guy (23rd in 1973) who apparently did OK for himself.

So if you want to draft a first round punter, history says that one out of three will be a hall of famer. ;)

They did not represent what i saw on tape, really would have expected better 3 cone and shuttle times, yet 22 reps. Certainly would like to see more tape, since i'm left wanting more...the no coverage duties is the kicker. Not shocked with the 4 - 6 round grade, so I really do not see Ochi making it to UDFA round.

Hope you're right and Butler falls. I want him or Chris Jones on the DL. Gotta have some damn length for a change, and both those guys can play in 2DL alignments.

I agree with 4ever on his comments on Butler. Pad level, combine testing, and no speed for a pass rusher. He shows no athleticism. Your pick of Shaq Calhoun also stinks.

I said several days ago that my belief is that if TT were faced with a choice between high ceiling guys like Butler and Billings, or a high-floor guy like Reed at #27 that he would take the safe pick and go with Reed. I still do.

Don't agree buddy. We shall soon see. Whoever doesn't think Butler won't be a beast in this league doesn't know what they're talking about IMO. Butler is the most versatile and flexible marquee DL in the whole draft. You can't pass on a chess piece like that. I like Reed but he's much more one dimensional. Give me the guy who can stay put in sub packages all day long. I wouldn't be upset in we get Reed because he's a very good one trick pony, just not the Swiss Army Knife that Butler is;)

If they draft him and move him to OLB, I think you're right.

Yep. He's what Perry was supposed to be for the Pack. A pure pass rusher. I think there will be better pass rushers available in the 2nd though.

We just don't need guys that take plays off ...we just had one of those guys retire (sort of).

I totally agree. And I see that in his film. Either it's taking plays off or half-ass'n. Two evils...

Saw some video with Ragland and another guy analyzing game tape. Ragland thinks highly of himself and is quick to point out that "it wasn't his assignment". I sure hope that someone wastes a pick ahead of us on this Boaty McBoatyFace.

Which player doesn't think highly of himself? The tape clearly shows who was at fault.

Some good choices. However a lot of these d guys are also on the bears list too and they have a lot of picks this year. Detroit too.
I agree Linebacker and O line are needs.
Yes we lose people next year but we have another draft year. If you can draft people who can step in and play then losing this guy or that doesn't matter all that much.

We speculate that these guys are on the Bears and Lions lists. Maybe some have been in for workouts and the like...the only people who know for sure are those in the Bear and Lion "war room". In the end, the flow of the draft and the ability to manipulate your positioning will dictate the outcome.

Defense won 2 of the last 3 SB's. Copy cat league, so teams will be taking defenders everywhere.

With so many PAckers fans and pundits being in (roughly) general agreement about the Packers' projected needs and draft picks this year, the table is set for Ted Thompson and the Packers front office at large to do what they do- that is, do what most won't see coming- and set off a chain reaction of angry, disappointed fans who may or may not pick up pitch forks, light torches, and start the cauldron a-boiling for tar-and-featherings.

In a strange way, it has become one of the things I most look forward to during the draft... The rabid backlash.

Yes, I can see Ted taking an unknown TE and making a Pro Bowl coverage linebacker out of him. Go Pack.

Maaaaaan, do I like me some Maliek Collins (Nebraska) when it comes to pass rushing. Very fast get off, uses his arm length to keep blockers off, has more than a couple pass rush tools, and he's nasty.

Now, for the whomp-whomp...

I'm seeing him get beat up when it comes to run plays. Double teamed? Forget it about. He's moonwalking.

Our next Sean Richardson:

Kent London?

Man, I want to see his film. The highlight tape uploaded is so grainy. His Combine/Pro Day numbers are ridiculous. I compared them to the Honey Badger's.

Kent London
40: 4.53
3-Code: 6.89
20-Yard Shuttle: 4.18

Tyrann Mathieu:
40: 4.50
3-Cone: 6.87
20-Yard Shuttle: 4.14

I have been all over Travis Feeney from UW for a long time . I hope he makes it to GB. I think he would be an asset. He has two bad shoulders but he looks well recovered from surgery
